Sexuality Curriculum Policies: Rural Is Not Always More Conservative, Susan Roberts-Dobie, Mary E. Losch, Danielle Vsetecka, Andrew Morse
The Rural Educator
This study examined sexuality education policies of school districts following the enactment of a law by the state of Iowa in 2007 requiring schools to include curriculum related to human growth and development education. The authors compared responses from superintendents in rural and urban areas in the state of Iowa regarding their districts’ sexuality curriculum policies. All public school superintendents in Iowa (n=364) were mailed a survey; 131 (36%) responded. The sample was representative of the state both geographically and by size of district. Findings indicate that while rural states (or more-rural areas within rural states) may be publically perceived …

Teammates: Providing Emotional And Academic Support In Rural Schools, Jody C. Isernhagen
The Rural Educator
Numerous studies have found that mentoring has a positive effect on students who participate in it. Mentorship for students in rural communities is both necessary and challenging given the uphill battle these schools and communities face to improve their students’ academic achievement and emotional well-being. Through examining teacher, parent, and student perceptions of the TeamMates Mentoring Program in a rural Nebraska district, this study concluded that TeamMates is providing necessary social and emotional support to its mentees in rural schools, as well as encouraging them to improve their grades. However, TeamMates must continue to heighten its support of low-achieving students …

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is caused by a micro-deletion of over 40 genes at the q11.2 locus of chromosome 22 and is a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. COMT, one of the genes located in the deleted region, has been considered as a major candidate gene for genetic susceptibility in psychiatric diseases. Its functional polymorphism Val108/158Met has been shown to affect prefrontal function and working memory and has been associated with emotional dysregulation. We utilized a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) event-related paradigm to asses COMT genotype and gender-moderated effects on the neural activation that …

The rising temperature of the world's oceans has become a major threat to coral reefs globally as the severity and frequency of mass coral bleaching and mortality events increase. In 2005, high ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean resulted in the most severe bleaching event ever recorded in the basin. Methodology/Principal Findings: Satellite-based tools provided warnings for coral reef managers and scientists, guiding both the iming and location of researchers' field observations as anomalously warm conditions developed and spread across the greater Caribbean region from June to October 2005. Field surveys of bleaching and mortality exceeded prior efforts …

Background. The gut is a major reservoir for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in patients receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). We hypothesized that distinct immune environments within the gut may support varying levels of HIV.
Methods. In 8 HIV-1-positive adults who were receiving ART and had CD4+ T cell counts of >200 cells/μL and plasma viral loads of <40 copies/mL, levels of HIV and T cell activation were measured in blood samples and endoscopic biopsy specimens from the duodenum, ileum, ascending colon, and rectum.
Results. HIV DNA and RNA levels per CD4+ T cell were higher in all 4 gut sites compared with those in the blood. HIV DNA levels increased from the duodenum to the rectum, whereas the median HIV …

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is a critical mediator of inflammation, and its production is tightly regulated, with control points operating at nearly every step of its biosynthesis. We sought to identify uncharacterized TNF-α 3' untranslated region (3'UTR)-interacting proteins utilizing a novel screen, termed the RNA capture assay. We identified CARHSP1, a cold-shock domain-containing protein. Knockdown of CARHSP1 inhibits TNF-α protein production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated cells and reduces the level of TNF-α mRNA in both resting and LPS-stimulated cells. mRNA stability assays demonstrate that CARHSP1 knockdown decreases TNF-α mRNA stability from a half-life (t(1/2)) of 49 min to a t(1/2) …

Assessing Intercultural Experience: Differences In Biculturalism, Intercultural Sensitivity, And Cognitive Flexibility Among Latino Immigrants, Christine Christmas
Masters Theses
This study examined first generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in a Latin American country and moved to the U.S. after the age of 12, and second generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in the U.S. or moved here before the age of 12. Literature in the field of cross-cultural adaptation suggests that intercultural communication competence tends to be further developed as a result of intercultural adaptation. The intent of this research was to test this assertion. Data was collected by way of survey administration on a sample of 216 Latino immigrants representing both first and …

Differences In Personality Factors And College Major Choice, Jennifer Smith
Differences In Personality Factors And College Major Choice, Jennifer Smith
Theses
The transition from secondary education to post-secondary education is stressful for all students. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) only mandates transition plans for students receiving special education services. Career assessments and transition services should encourage career exploration which requires students to have knowledge about oneself and the world of work. When career assessments provide students with this information, they may be more informed on what major to choose. The purpose of this study was to look at group differences among college majors and their personality factors as measured by the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire, 5th Edition (16PF-5). …

Biparental Mucus Feeding: A Unique Example Of Parental Care In An Amazonian Cichlid., Jonathan Buckley, Richard J. Maunder, Andrew Foey, Janet Pearce, Adalberto L. Val, Katherine A. Sloman
School of Biomedical Sciences
Vertebrates display a wide variety of parental care behaviours, including the guarding of offspring pre and post nutritional independence as well as the direct provision of nutrients during the early development period. The Amazonian cichlid Symphysodon spp. (discus fish) is unusual among fish species, in that both parents provide offspring with mucus secretions to feed from after hatching. This extensive provision of care, which can last up to a month, imposes a physiological demand on both parents and gives rise to conflict between the parent and offspring. Here, we investigated the relationship between parents and offspring during a breeding cycle, …
Digital Dog Shelter Application, Taryn Bzdick
Digital Dog Shelter Application, Taryn Bzdick
Theses
Pet overpopulation has been a major issue for a long time. Hundreds of thousands of dogs are in shelters all over the country who desperately need homes. When looking up these dogs on shelter web sites it is common to find a small blurb and a low quality photograph in a poorly designed environment about a dog in need of a home. Most of the time these postings are not informative enough to help the potential owner make an educated decision in choosing the right dog for them. Dogs in these shelters would have significantly higher chances of being adopted …

Choosing the appropriate neuroimaging phenotype is critical to successfully identify genes that influence brain structure or function. While neuroimaging methods provide numerous potential phenotypes, their role for imaging genetics studies is unclear. Here we examine the relationship between brain volume, grey matter volume, cortical thickness and surface area, from a genetic standpoint. Four hundred and eighty-six individuals from randomly ascertained extended pedigrees with high-quality T1-weighted neuroanatomic MRI images participated in the study. Surface-based and voxel-based representations of brain structure were derived, using automated methods, and these measurements were analysed using a variance-components method to identify the heritability of these traits …

Design, Synthesis & Biological Activity Of Novel Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (Ptp) Mimetics, Sridhar Reddy Kaulagari
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Protein phosphorylation is a post translational modification of proteins in which a serine, a threonine or a tyrosine residue is phosphorylated by an enzyme, kinase. Phosphorylation of proteins is a reversible and very important regulatory mechanism that occurs in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Phosphorylation turns many protein enzymes on and off, preventing or causing many diseases such as diabetes, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. The phosphorylation on tyrosine residues of proteins is essential for transmission of signals for cell growth, proliferation and differentiation. Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) in concert with protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) regulate many signal transduction pathways by controlling …

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused massive devastation and left a lasting impact along many of the major coastal regions in South Asia, including the coast of Tamil Nadu, a state in the southeastern tip of India. Following the event, sand deposits draped the low-lying areas and buried the muddy sediments of the coastal plain [Babu et al., 2007; Srinivasalu et al., 2007]. In addition, erosional features related to the tsunami, such as channels and scarps, have been observed along many parts of the coast (Figure 1a). This tsunami, along with a recorded history of intense monsoons, …

schemic infarction is a rare cause of acute myelopathy. We report the case of a young woman admitted to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman, who developed extensive spinal cord infarction in the setting of surgical evacuation and packing of liver haematoma and post-operative epidural analgesia. She had no vascular risk factors for stroke. The vascular mechanism underlying ischemic myelopathy and the relationship to abdominal surgery and epidural analgesia are discussed.

The Diagnosis And Management Of Severe Hypercalcaemia : A Simplified Approach - Report Of Five Cases, Omayma T. Elshafie, Nicholas Jy Woodhouse
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Hypercalcaemia, a common medical problem, can be a manifestation of various diseases. When severe, it can represent a medical emergency. Correct diagnosis is important to prevent unnecessary investigations and parathyroidectomies. We here present five patients with severe hypercalcaemia, most misdiagnosed for months or years before being referred to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman. We report how clinical examination, evaluation of fasting serum calcium, phosphate, creatinine and 24-hour urine calcium levels together with a review of their radiographics predicted the pathophysiology of the disorder and guided investigative procedures before hormone assays results were available.

Rapid Iron Loading In Heart And Liver In A Patient With Transfusion Dependent Thalassaemia After Brief Poor Compliance With Iron Chelation Therapy, Shahina Daar, Saeed Ahmed, Vasili
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Iron loading in patients with transfusion dependent thalassaemia is considered to occur primarily in the liver and, once the liver becomes saturated, other organs begin loading. We report here a splenectomised male patient who was treated for hepatitis C virus infection. Prior to starting antiviral therapy, his serum ferritin was maintained below 500 ng/ml with deferiprone monotherapy; cardiac T2* by magnetic resonance imaging was 48.8ms and hepatic T2* was 19.5ms. After twelve months of antiviral treatment during which time he was very poorly compliant with his deferoxamine chelation therapy, his ferritin had risen to 3820 ng/ml and cardiac and hepatic …
