Coaching Efficacy With Academic Leaders: A Phenomenological Investigation, Deanna Lee Vansickel-Peterson Nov 2010

Coaching Efficacy With Academic Leaders: A Phenomenological Investigation, Deanna Lee Vansickel-Peterson

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this psychological phenomenological research was to understand the efficacy of life coaching from the perspective of academic leaders. To date, not one investigation or attempt has been made towards the above stated purpose. This study includes a theoretical overview and a review of the coaching literature from Socrates (469-399 BC) to current day Humanistic theory presented in part by Roger (1902-1987). This process included data collection from five academic leaders who have been coached for at least two years. Levels of analysis of 365 statements, quote and/or comments produced finding of efficacy in life coaching with academic …

Fusarium Head Blight: Winter Wheat Cultivar Responses And Characterization Of Pathogen Isolates, John Fredy Hernandez Nopsa Nov 2010

Fusarium Head Blight: Winter Wheat Cultivar Responses And Characterization Of Pathogen Isolates, John Fredy Hernandez Nopsa

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L). FHB reduces yield and grain quality and causes accumulation of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) in grain. Cultivar resistance is one of the most effective management strategies for FHB. Experiments were conducted to 1) identify winter wheat cultivars with resistance to FHB and DON accumulation, 2) determine the effect of winter wheat cultivar on the relationship between FHB and DON concentration, and 3) identify the major species of Fusarium causing FHB in Nebraska and characterize its isolates. Differences (P ≤ 0.05) were detected among cultivars in …

"Heimatlos In Dieser Welt": The Isolated Modern Woman In Edith Södergran’S Vaxdukshäft Poetry, Kajsa M. Spjut Nov 2010

"Heimatlos In Dieser Welt": The Isolated Modern Woman In Edith Södergran’S Vaxdukshäft Poetry, Kajsa M. Spjut

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I explore how, although Edith Södergran’s Vaxdukshäf poems seem to support new female roles in early 20th century European society, they also reflect on the danger in changing from traditional to modern roles. As the poems illustrate, this change can create an isolated woman, who becomes trapped in her new independence and is unable to alter herself to connect with others. In order to understand what is meant by traditional and modern female roles, I present a historical background that contrasts the woman of pre-20th-Century Europe with the new woman that emerged around the Turn of the …

An Exploration Of The Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among A Sample Of Chinese Mothers In Ireland, Qianling Zhou, Katherine Younger, John Kearney

Articles

Background: Psychological factors are important in influencing breastfeeding practices. This retrospective study explored knowledge and attitudes related to breastfeeding of Chinese mothers living in Ireland. Methods: A cross-sectional self-administrated survey written in Chinese was distributed to a convenience sample of 322 immigrant Chinese mothers mainly via Chinese supermarkets and Chinese language schools in Dublin, with the involvement of the snowball method to increase sample size. Maternal breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes were described, their associations with socio-demographic variables were explored by Chi-square analysis, and their independent associations with breastfeeding behaviours were estimated by binary logistic regression analyses. Results: In spite of …

The Problem Of The Commons: Still Unsettled After 100 Years, Robert Stavins Nov 2010

The Problem Of The Commons: Still Unsettled After 100 Years, Robert Stavins

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The problem of the commons is more important to our lives and thus more central to economics than a century ago when Katharine Coman led off the first issue of the American Economic Review. As the U.S. and other economies have grown, the carrying-capacity of the planet - in regard to natural resources and environmental quality — has become a greater concern, particularly for common-property and open-access resources. The focus of this article is on some important, unsettled problems of the commons. Within the realm of natural resources, there are special challenges associated with renewable resources, which are frequently characterized …

Local Communities In Front Of Big External Investors: An Opportunity Or A Risk?, Angelo Antoci, Paolo Russu, Elisa Ticci Nov 2010

Local Communities In Front Of Big External Investors: An Opportunity Or A Risk?, Angelo Antoci, Paolo Russu, Elisa Ticci

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the current age of trade and financial openness, local economies in developing countries are becoming increasingly exposed to external investments. The objective of the proposed two-sector model with environmental externalities is to provide an insight into the interaction between external investors and local communities with a focus upon the different strategies and income sources available to each category. In this context, analysis suggests that environmental regulations and incentives offered in order to attract external capital investment (whether foreign or national) may have an un-uniform impact on the two typologies of actors.

Climate Change Adaptation, Development, And International Financial Support: Lessons From Eu Pre-Accession And Solidarity Funds, Valentin Przyluski, Stéphane Hallegatte Nov 2010

Climate Change Adaptation, Development, And International Financial Support: Lessons From Eu Pre-Accession And Solidarity Funds, Valentin Przyluski, Stéphane Hallegatte

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Funding adaptation requires adequate governance and there are different ways to organise and channel the funds to where it is most efficient and most necessary. This paper investigates this issue and studies the practical implementation of a development under conditionality, namely adaptation-development, and its requirement in terms of financing architecture. To contribute to this research, it looks at similar problems that have been met in the past, namely the European funding programs for Eastern Europe countries that were candidates to adhesion, and European internal structural and cohesion funds. These funding examples provide a pertinent analogy for the adaptation problem, and …

Does The Cause Of Death Matter? The Effect Of Dread, Controllability, Exposure And Latency On The Vsl, Anna Alberini, Milan Ščasný Nov 2010

Does The Cause Of Death Matter? The Effect Of Dread, Controllability, Exposure And Latency On The Vsl, Anna Alberini, Milan Ščasný

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Value of a Statistical Life is a key input into the calculation of the benefits of environmental policies that save lives. To date, the VSL used in environmental policy analyses has not been adjusted for age or the cause of death. Air pollution regulations, however, are linked to reductions in the risk of dying for cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses, raising the question whether a single VSL should be applied for all of these causes of death. We conducted a conjoint choice experiment survey in Milan, Italy, to investigate this question. We find that the VSL increases with …

The Public Management Of Risk: Separating Ex Ante And Ex Post Monitors, Yolande Hiriart, David Martimort, Jerome Pouyet Nov 2010

The Public Management Of Risk: Separating Ex Ante And Ex Post Monitors, Yolande Hiriart, David Martimort, Jerome Pouyet

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

When a firm undertakes risky activities, the conflict between social and private incentives to implement safety care requires public intervention which can take the form of both monetary incentives but also ex ante or ex post monitoring, i.e., before or after an accident occurs. We delineate the optimal scope of monitoring depending on whether public monitors are benevolent or corruptible. We show that separating the ex ante and the ex post monitors increases the likelihood of ex post investigation, helps prevent capture and improves welfare.
