Calcium Regulates Vesicle Replenishment At The Cone Ribbon Synapse., Norbert Babai, Theodore M. Bartoletti, Wallace B. Thoreson Nov 2010

Calcium Regulates Vesicle Replenishment At The Cone Ribbon Synapse., Norbert Babai, Theodore M. Bartoletti, Wallace B. Thoreson

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Cones release glutamate-filled vesicles continuously in darkness, and changing illumination modulates this release. Because sustained release in darkness is governed by vesicle replenishment rates, we analyzed how cone membrane potential regulates replenishment. Synaptic release from cones was measured by recording postsynaptic currents in Ambystoma tigrinum horizontal or OFF bipolar cells evoked by depolarization of simultaneously voltage-clamped cones. We measured replenishment after attaining a steady state between vesicle release and replenishment using trains of test pulses. Increasing Ca(2+) currents (I(Ca)) by changing the test step from -30 to -10 mV increased replenishment. Lengthening -30 mV test pulses to match the Ca(2+) …

Compensation And Organizational Outcomes: Examining The Relationship Between Teacher Salaries And Student Achievement For School Divisions In Virginia, Matthew Steele

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents the results of general linear modeling (GLM) of 131 school divisions in Virginia. The purpose of this research is to answer the question: What is the relationship between teacher salaries and student achievement as measured by Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)? Utilizing an equity theory and distributive justice perspective, data related to achievement in English and mathematics by high school students, as measured by the requirements of AYP, were culled from the Virginia Department of Education for every school division in Virginia in the subjects of reading, writing, algebra I, geometry, and algebra II. These data represent the …

How To Manage Your Woodlands For Sustained And Maximum Benefits, Steven D. Rasmussen Nov 2010

How To Manage Your Woodlands For Sustained And Maximum Benefits, Steven D. Rasmussen

Nebraska Forest Service: Publications

Nebraska's forest lands comprise less than 2 percent of the total land base in the state (7 18,300 acres). However, on an acre by acre comparison, woodlands provide more associated benefits for society, the environment and our quality of life than most other land uses. Trees provide soil protection from wind and water erosion. Woodlands help protect the quality of adjacent water resources by eliminating contaminates, shading for cooler water temperatures and contributing organic matter for use by aquatic life at all levels. Trees and shrubs also trap snow for spring moisture. Woodlands are necessary areas for many wildlife species …

Rethinking Free Trade, Fernando L. Leila Nov 2010

Rethinking Free Trade, Fernando L. Leila

Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers

This paper examines the present theories and shortcomings of current free trade policy, and the consequences thereof, which promote protectionist behavior among countries on an international scale. Theoretically, free trade should encourage progress within the global community. However, developing countries, with astonishing growth rates, like Brazil, China or India, have based their economies on opposing economic policies, closer to mercantilism than liberalization or free trade, allowing for poor countries to question whether free trade is the right way to improve their economies. Furthermore, a huge gap exists between what developed countries preach and what they practice, presenting a major obstacle …

Observational Study And Individualized Antiretroviral Therapy Initiation Rules For Reducing Cancer Incidence In Hiv-Infected Patients, Romain Neugebauer, Michael J. Silverberg, Mark J. Van Der Laan Nov 2010

Observational Study And Individualized Antiretroviral Therapy Initiation Rules For Reducing Cancer Incidence In Hiv-Infected Patients, Romain Neugebauer, Michael J. Silverberg, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Targeted Maximum Likelihood Learning (TMLL) has been proposed as a general estimation methodology that can, in particular, be applied to draw causal inferences based on marginal structural modeling with observational data using either a point treatment approach (all confounders are assumed not to be affected by the exposure(s) of interest) or a longitudinal data approach (some confounders may be affected by one of the exposures of interest). While formal development of TMLL has included road maps for applications in longitudinal data approaches, real-life implementations have been restricted to studies based on a point treatment approach. In this article, we illustrate …

Public Health, Health Administration, and Health Sciences Faculty Research

Background

Research suggests individuals with diabetes are twice as likely as those without diabetes to be clinically depressed. Still unknown is the relationship between diabetes and depression in socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Purpose

We examined the relationship between diabetes and depressive symptoms in a large, racially diverse, low-income cohort in the southeastern USA. Methods

A total of 69,068 adults were recruited from community health centers in 12 southeastern states. A fully adjusted polytomous logistic regression model tested the relationship between demographics, lifestyle behaviors, antidepressant use, body mass index, diabetes diagnosis, diabetes duration, diabetes medication compliance, and depressive symptoms using the Centers …

Supply Sensitive Services In Swiss Ambulatory Care: An Analysis Of Basic Health Insurance Records For 2003-2007, André Busato, Pius Matter, Beat Künzi, David C. Goodman Nov 2010

Supply Sensitive Services In Swiss Ambulatory Care: An Analysis Of Basic Health Insurance Records For 2003-2007, André Busato, Pius Matter, Beat Künzi, David C. Goodman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Swiss ambulatory care is characterized by independent, and primarily practice-based, physicians, receiving fee for service reimbursement. This study analyses supply sensitive services using ambulatory care claims data from mandatory health insurance. A first research question was aimed at the hypothesis that physicians with large patient lists decrease their intensity of services and bill less per patient to health insurance, and vice versa: physicians with smaller patient lists compensate for the lack of patients with additional visits and services. A second research question relates to the fact that several cantons are allowing physicians to directly dispense drugs to patients ('self-dispensation') whereas …

Managing Government Business-Relations In Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2010

Managing Government Business-Relations In Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I wish to thank the Management Association of Pakistan for inviting me this afternoon to attend this ceremony. As I am privileged to address a highly distinguished audience I would like to share my thoughts on a subject about which there is very little open debate and discourse. The topic I have chosen this afternoon “Managing Government Business – Relations in Pakistan” is quite critical to all the stakeholders in the economy of Pakistan. In almost all nation-states of the world, private businesses have to co-exist with governments. The balance between the two in economic space varies a lot. On …

Atmospheric Compensation Over Case Ii Waters: Simultaneous Aerosol And Water Constituent Retrieval, Donald Taylor Nov 2010

Atmospheric Compensation Over Case Ii Waters: Simultaneous Aerosol And Water Constituent Retrieval, Donald Taylor

Theses

In many algorithms designed to retrieve water constituent concentrations, an assumption of negligible water-leaving radiance is made in the near infrared (NIR) wavelengths (750-950 [nm]). This allows fairly accurate atmospheric correction to be applied to the oceanic imagery. Given this assumption, it is possible to derive model estimates of aerosol type and density and compensate for its effects in other regions of the spectrum. Unfortunately this assumption is only valid in areas of very low total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations, such as open ocean waters. Increased TSS load causes significant back-scattering within the water, increasing the water leaving signal in …

Concepts Of Bias And Appointments To The Governing Council Of The Canadian Institutes Of Health Research, Elaine Gibson Nov 2010

Concepts Of Bias And Appointments To The Governing Council Of The Canadian Institutes Of Health Research, Elaine Gibson

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In October 2009, the academic health research community and the pharmaceutical industry were brought closer together with the appointment of Dr. Bernard Prigent, vice-president of Pfizer Canada, to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). This bridging of the two worlds has stirred up considerable debate before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health, in letters to CMAJ and in an online petition that garnered more than 4400 signatures. There are at least two distinct and vocal camps in the debate: those categorically in favour (including the federal minister of health and the president of …

The Monster In The Closet: Misperception Of Mental Illness, Sarah Alexandra Bernstein Nov 2010

The Monster In The Closet: Misperception Of Mental Illness, Sarah Alexandra Bernstein

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Mental illness affects all major aspects of an individual‟s life. From basic needs such as shelter and employment, to interactions with family, partners, and friends, the diagnosis represents likely difficulties due to stigma and negative attitudes. Efforts to bring forth the recognition and acceptance of mental illness in the United States, as well as around the world, start by confronting misconceptions through examination of causes. Increased access to needed resources and funding for treatment are also needed and may be accomplished through the use of media, education, and rising voices lobbying for the rights of people with mental illness.
