The Human Population Growth And Its Ecological Consequences On Kenya And Tanzania, Lauren Noll Dec 2010

The Human Population Growth And Its Ecological Consequences On Kenya And Tanzania, Lauren Noll

Student Theses 2001-2013

The world population is growing at an alarming rate. The rapid growth in population numbers and density along with the steady increase in the rates are causing issues in many countries. Although every country is experiencing many consequences of the growth, the countries of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa seem to be suffering immensely. Not only does the increasing human population in these third world countries create an overarching competition for natural resources such as food, water, and land, the growth also has detrimental effects on the surrounding environment, wildlife populations, ecotourism, and traditional African cultures.

Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model In Rodents: Methods And Potential Pitfalls, Fudong Liu, Louise D. Mccullough

UCHC Articles - Research

A variety of animal models have been developed for modeling ischemic stroke. The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model has been utilized extensively, especially in rodents. While the MCAO model provides stroke researchers with an excellent platform to investigate the disease, controversial or even paradoxical results are occasionally seen in the literature utilizing this model. Various factors exert important effects on the outcome in this stroke model, including the age and sex of the animal examined. This paper discusses emerging information on the effects of age and sex on ischemic outcomes after MCAO, with an emphasis on mouse models of …

Lateral Blood Flow Velocity Estimation Based On Ultrasound Speckle Size Change With Scan Velocity, Tiantian Xu, Gregory R. Bashford Dec 2010

Lateral Blood Flow Velocity Estimation Based On Ultrasound Speckle Size Change With Scan Velocity, Tiantian Xu, Gregory R. Bashford

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

Conventional (Doppler-based) blood flow velocity measurement methods using ultrasound are capable of resolving the axial component (i.e., that aligned with the ultrasound propagation direction) of the blood flow velocity vector. However, these methods are incapable of detecting blood flow in the direction normal to the ultrasound beam. In addition, these methods require repeated pulse-echo interrogation at the same spatial location. A new method has been introduced which estimates the lateral component of blood flow within a single image frame using the observation that the speckle pattern corresponding to blood reflectors (typically red blood cells) stretches (i.e., is smeared) if the …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

The projected increase in the production and consumption of animal products is likely to put further pressure on the globe’s freshwater resources. The size and characteristics of the water footprint vary across animal types and production systems. The current study provides a comprehensive account of the global green, blue and grey water footprints of different sorts of farm animals and animal products, distinguishing between different production systems and considering the conditions in all countries of the world separately. The following animal categories were considered: beef cattle, dairy cattle, pig, sheep, goat, broiler chicken, layer chicken and horses. The study shows …

Wen-Wu In Counseling With Men, Travis W. Schermer Dec 2010

Wen-Wu In Counseling With Men, Travis W. Schermer

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

Wen-wu is a Chinese conceptualization of masculinity that strikes a balance between wen (i.e., literary strength) and wu (i.e., physical strength). This concept can be readily applied to a mental health setting when working with male clients. The present treatise outlines the concept of wen-wu and provides suggestions for use in clinical work. Applying this concept in counseling promotes the construction of wellness plans and facilitates discussions about masculinity.

Money And Its Effects On Life, Behaviour And Happiness, Knowledge@Smu Dec 2010

Money And Its Effects On Life, Behaviour And Happiness, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Happiness cannot be bought, some people might argue. Yet, money certainly allows people to buy things and experiences that can ultimately bring joy and happiness. Results from this year's Gallup World Poll, for instance, ranked Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands – all wealthy countries – as the top five for happiest inhabitants. A recent SMU Social Sciences Capstone Seminar also pointed out that wealthier countries have cleaner water, better infrastructure, fewer diseases, and higher IQs. Could the old adage, that money is the root of all evil, be out of touch with the realities of our capitalist, consumerist …

Leeden's Transformation: Giving Prominence To A Lesser Known Industry, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

When Steven Tham took the helm at Leeden Limited, a local welding, gas and safety company, he had the unenviable task of making some decisions that would ultimately close some operations and displace employees. However, within a decade, not only did he turn the company around, he grew its revenue by a whopping ten times. All of it would not be possible without a systematic expansion strategy, and a keen eye on the market, he told an audience at SMU's Wee Kim Wee Centre.

Using The Body To Investigate The Impact Of Verbal And Physical Aggression While Working On An Acute Psychiatric Unit: An Artistic Inquiry Through Movement, Kimberly Brooke Kaufman Dec 2010

Using The Body To Investigate The Impact Of Verbal And Physical Aggression While Working On An Acute Psychiatric Unit: An Artistic Inquiry Through Movement, Kimberly Brooke Kaufman

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of my research is to investigate how adverse experiences can be a source of emotional positive transformation and growth. Using artistic inquiry, I hope to address the questions, “How can I maintain a sense of safety in an unsafe and ever-changing environment such as the inpatient psychiatric unit” and “How does my passion for dance/movement help me to survive and nurture self under these circumstances?” Using movement as my primary expressive medium, I will explore common themes and patterns that may arise through videoing and journaling my processes in response to these questions. Through an understanding of my …

The Emotional Road To Recovery: Tracking The Mind And Body Experience Of Shame In Women Recovering From Drugs And Alcohol, Nicole Dibacco

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this thesis project was to identify the emotional experiences of women who are in recovery for addiction on a verbal and non-verbal level and determine if shame is a predominant emotion. Through the combination of phenomenological and clinical case study methodologies, this thesis examines the verbal disclosures and movement responses of women within dance/movement therapy groups, through video recording and journal entries. Content analysis resulted in the identification of primary themes, which included circumstances related to relationship and responsibility, shame related to responsibility, goals for their relationships and for self. The resulting implications for dance/movement therapy methods …

A Heuristic Investigation Of Intuition In Dance/Movement Therapy Practice, Jessica Melville Goodin Dec 2010

A Heuristic Investigation Of Intuition In Dance/Movement Therapy Practice, Jessica Melville Goodin

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This thesis is a heuristic examination of my experience of intuition as a new dance/movement therapist. The purpose of this investigation was to provide an inceptive inroad into the little explored but recently popular subject of intuition, specifically as it relates to dance/movement therapy and the use of the dance therapist’s intuition as a therapeutic resource. Creating a journal that captured my contemplation of intuition and my experiences of intuition, both in clinical dance/movement therapy work and in creative and personal experiences, was the primary method of data collection. My journaling was augmented by interviews with two practicing dance therapists. …

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

Multidimensional Analysis, a video based case study research methodology, was created by this author to examine multivariable qualitative data and develop an understanding of the therapeutic value and relational characteristics of auditory, visual and contextual components in individual dance/movement therapy sessions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the benefits and limitations of Multidimensional Analysis based on its development and use in a preliminary study. Multidimensional Analysis involved an examination of individual dance/movement therapy sessions as a whole, as differentiated moments, and again as a whole. Videotaping each session was the primary form of data collection from which all …

Emerging Therapist, Growing Child: Developing A Relationship With A Child With Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kirsten Young Dec 2010

Emerging Therapist, Growing Child: Developing A Relationship With A Child With Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kirsten Young

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

Children who have had severe early childhood experiences of neglect, abuse, and/or abrupt separation from their caregivers between the ages of six months and three years are at risk for developing reactive attachment disorder. In one form of reactive attachment disorder, known as the inhibited type, the child fails to initiate interactions and positively respond in social situations. Such behaviors make it challenging for therapists to establish therapeutic relationships with children who have been diagnosed with the inhibited type of reactive attachment disorder. The purpose of this case study is to present the challenges, successes, and reactions of a neophyte …
