Eagle Lager: A Sorghum Success Story On Many Levels, Ian Mackintosh Dec 2010

Eagle Lager: A Sorghum Success Story On Many Levels, Ian Mackintosh

INTSORMIL Presentations

In 1999 in Uganda we were faced with a static but highly competitive market.

Needed to grow our market and to do this we needed to make beer cheaper

It was felt that a suitable local ingredient would reduce the cost of manufacture and stimulate local agriculture and the economy as well as provide opportunities for growth and profit for the company.

An extensive base line study of the Ugandan agricultural sector was undertaken to determine what was “out there.”

It was clear that there was enormous potential but little else.

Sorghum seemed the logical starting point because there was …

A Literature Review On Crossbreeding In Dairy Cattle, Philip Owens Dec 2010

A Literature Review On Crossbreeding In Dairy Cattle, Philip Owens

Dairy Science

The objective of the literature review was to determine whether or not crossbreeding is a profitable and a viable option for the dairymen of today by reviewing the literature and experiments that have been conducted throughout the world by today’s dairy professionals and leaders. The Dairy market today is increasingly competitive and more and more dairymen are considering crossbreeding to decrease health costs and increase profitability. Price premiums from cheese plants are given to milk producers for high components like protein and fat. In recent studies done by universities and research facilities around the world, results have found promising numbers …

Institution Of Presynch Protocol, Justin Breedyk Dec 2010

Institution Of Presynch Protocol, Justin Breedyk

Dairy Science

The objective of this study was to compare factors of reproductive efficiency between two separate ovulation synchronization programs, with one that includes presynchronization of all fresh cows and one that does not ovsynch cows until they have been found open after initial insemination. In recent years, reproductive efficiency has declined as other areas of the dairy business have continued to excel. The investigation was performed on two dairies in Hart, Texas, White River Ranch and VB Dairy. The dairies include herds of 5,000 and 3,000 milking cows, respectively. Data was retrieved using Dairy Comp 305 and covered a two month …

Ultraviolet Light As An Adjunct Treatment To Pasteurization For Microbial Reduction In Milk Intended For Extended Shelf Life, Jacob Zonneveld Dec 2010

Ultraviolet Light As An Adjunct Treatment To Pasteurization For Microbial Reduction In Milk Intended For Extended Shelf Life, Jacob Zonneveld

Dairy Science

The objective of this study was to determine whether ultraviolet light treatment of milk could be used in adjunct with pasteurization and to determine whether the microbial count in bulk tank raw milk was sufficient enough to receive significant results. Samples were collected from a bulk tank filled with 1600 gallons of raw Holstein and Jersey milk from the Cal Poly Dairy throughout the course of a week. Control (library) samples were also taken from the raw milk tank and stored without air or agitation for comparison. These samples were plated each day and examined 24 and 48 hours after …

Use Of An Activity Monitoring System As Part Of The Cal Poly Dairy Breeding Protocol, Trevor Nutcher Dec 2010

Use Of An Activity Monitoring System As Part Of The Cal Poly Dairy Breeding Protocol, Trevor Nutcher

Dairy Science

The objective of this study, is to determine the effectiveness of an activity monitoring system as an integral part of the Cal Poly Dairy breeding protocol. Dairy herd reproductive efficiencies have dropped in the past 40 years. Increased milk production, and genetic advancements towards more milk production, have led to reproductive rates declining. An advanced breeding program is needed to become more efficient in this area. The study consisted of the evaluation of one option, Heatime™ by MICRO Dairy Logic, and comparing it to the commonly used programs in dairies today such as synchronization methods, pedometers, and other electronic detection …

Methane Digesters, Thomas Van Steyn Dec 2010

Methane Digesters, Thomas Van Steyn

Dairy Science

Anaerobic digestion has many different avenues for opportunity in use on farms. The objective of my senior project is to determine the economic viability of alternative methane digesters on a dairy. Currently the conversion of animal manure to biogas through the process of anaerobic digestion is widely used in Europe. In the U.S. anaerobic digesters have become increasingly in demand by environmental groups and dairymen. Digesters environmental impact involves the benefit by capturing the biogas that comes off animal manure. Methane, a green house gas, is the one with the most concern that is captured by methane digesters. The biogas …

These characteristics include mother’s age, her education level, household income, parenting attitudes, involvement with the child, and drug and alcohol use. Data was used from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study conducted by the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. Cumulative logistic regression was used to analyze the …

This study examines the relationship between the number of types of traumatic events experienced by children 3 to 6 years old, parenting stress, and children's posttraumatic stress (PTS). Parents and caregivers provided data for 154 urban children admitted into community-based mental health or developmental services. By parent and caregiver report, children experienced an average of 4.9 different types of potentially traumatic events. Nearly one quarter of the children evidenced clinically significant PTS. Posttraumatic stress was positively and significantly related to family violence and other family-related trauma exposure, nonfamily violence and trauma exposure, and parenting stress. Additionally, parenting stress partially mediated …
