Background. Sindbis virus (SV) is the prototype of alphaviruses which are a group of widely distributed human and animal pathogens. Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) A1 is an RNA-binding protein that shuttles between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Our recent studies found that hnRNP A1 relocates from nucleus to cytoplasm in Sindbis virus (SV)-infected cells. hnRNP A1 binds to the 5' UTR of SV RNA and facilitates the viral RNA replication and translation. Methods. Making use of standard molecular techniques, virology methods and an in vitro system developed by our lab to assess the role of hnRNP A1 in SV positive …

Effects Of Alternative Prey As A Buffer To Predation Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) By Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides), Shelley Nellis
Effects Of Alternative Prey As A Buffer To Predation Of Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) By Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides), Shelley Nellis
Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish have pectoral spines that lock to defend against gape-limited predators such as largemouth bass. Previous work indicated that spines increase survival of channel catfish exposed to bass but did not determine whether bass avoid catfish if less dangerous species are available. We presented bass with channel catfish and two alternatives, bluegill and goldfish, and compared order of ingestion, ingestion time, percent of successful strikes, and time spent chasing each prey species. We also presented the three species in a jar study that standardized position in the water column as well as in a net-pen study. The order of …
The Effect Of Cobalt Protoporphyrin And Cobalt Chloride On Heme Oxygenase Expression And Protection From Deoxycholate-Induced Apoptosis, Tina Lawson
Theses and Dissertations
The inner surface of the stomach is lined by a mucous membrane known as the gastric mucosa. The integrity of the gastric mucosa is critical for protecting the stomach from the low pH and proteolytic environment within the lumen. Both clinically and experimentally, exposure of gastric mucosal cells to bile salts is known to cause injury. Bile salts present in duodenogastric reflux are thought to play a significant role in gastric ulcer formation and alkaline gastritis. In vitro, studies using physiologic concentrations of the secondary bile salt, deoxycholic acid, indicate that bile salts can induce apoptosis in cultured human gastric …

Cultural Labor’S “Democratic Deficits”: Employment, Autonomy And Alienation In Us Film Animation, Matt Stahl
Cultural Labor’S “Democratic Deficits”: Employment, Autonomy And Alienation In Us Film Animation, Matt Stahl
FIMS Publications
Cultural industries’ reliance on streams of novel cultural material requires granting creative employees significant degrees of autonomy within firms. This article expands on these findings by focusing on key moments in the early history of cinematic animation and aspects of contemporary animation production. Drawing on political‐theoretical analyses of employment to limn substantive limits to the autonomy of artists integrated into Hollywood production, it shows that the institution of employment enables cultural industry employers not only to dispossess artists of their creative work(s), but also, when they deem it expedient, to manage artists like other kinds of workers. It is a …
Inhibition Studies Of Serine Hydrolases By Cyclic Phosphates And Phosphonates, Supratik Dutta
Inhibition Studies Of Serine Hydrolases By Cyclic Phosphates And Phosphonates, Supratik Dutta
Dissertations
The serine hydrolase superfamily is one of the largest known enzyme families comprising approximately 1% of the predicted protein product in human genome. This family of enzymes contains a catalytic triad that is mainly consists of serine, aspartic acid/glutamic acid and histidine residues in their active sites. It has been proposed that the potential drug targets for Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes type 2 are enzymes that belong to this enzyme family. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps transport information from one nerve cell to another. Breakdown of acetylcholine in Alzheimer’s disease patients …

Representations Of Remembrance: Literature And Memory In Borges, Pigila, And Fresán, Paul Michael Mcneil
Representations Of Remembrance: Literature And Memory In Borges, Pigila, And Fresán, Paul Michael Mcneil
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines three works by Argentine authors of the late 20th and early 21st centuries: Jorge Luis Borges's "La memoria de Shakespeare," Ricardo Piglia's La ciudad ausente, and Rodrigo Fresán's Mantra. These works explore the theme of memory directly, and provide insight into the role of memory in relation to literature, technology, and media. To understand memory and its functions and failures, I employ concepts from recent scientific inquiry into the nature of memory, particularly neuroscience and clinical psychology. Within this framework, I show how memory and narrative fiction share a number of similarities, and explore the …

Nail Distributions As Structural Insight At The Beaver Creek Trail Crossing Site (25sw49), Seward County, Nebraska, David M. Amrine
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
During the 2005 and 2006 archaeological field schools headed by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, excavations were carried out at the Beaver Creek Trail Crossing Site (25SW49) in Seward County, Nebraska. These excavations recovered various kinds of artifacts including a large assemblage of nails. Using data from nails recovered from both the 2005 and 2006 field seasons, this thesis shows that the counts and spatial distributions of the machine-cut nails in the assemblage are consistent with photographs of the site taken in 1866. It also argues for the use of nails as major structural indicators when …

Personality And Emotional Labor: Is, Julianne Michelle Pierce
Personality And Emotional Labor: Is, Julianne Michelle Pierce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of the current study was to develop and empirically test an updated model of emotional labor. A review of emotional labor literature from the past decade was reviewed and the proposed model and supporting research presented. The current study used an experimental design to examine personality, task performance, and the mediating role of emotional labor. Participants were 157 students from the University of Memphis that were assessed using personality measures, an emotional labor role-play, and a work performance task. Results did not support commitment as a moderator in the relationship between display rules and emotional labor performance and …
Procreation, Harm, And The Constitution, Carter Dillard
Procreation, Harm, And The Constitution, Carter Dillard
NULR Online
This Essay provides relatively novel answers to two related questions: First, are there moral reasons to limit the sorts of existences it is permissible to bring people into, such that one would be morally prohibited from procreating in certain circumstances? Second, can the state justify a legal prohibition on procreation in those circumstances using that moral reasoning, so that the law would likely be constitutional?
These questions are not new, but my answers to them are and add to the existing literature in several ways. First, I offer a possible resolution to a recent debate among legal scholars regarding what …

Longitudinal, Diet-Induced Weight Gain Is Associated With Increased Blood Monocytes And Reduced Tlr4 Expression, Kelley Strohacker, Richard J. Simpson, Katie C. Carpenter, Whitney L. Breslin, Brian K. Mcfarlin
International Journal of Exercise Science
Excessive weight gain increases systemic inflammation resulting in increased disease risk. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) reportedly mediates increases in inflammation; however, its role has not been fully evaluated. Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine the longitudinal effect of diet-induced weight gain on blood monocyte concentration and cell-surface TLR4 expression. Research Methods & Procedures. Male CD-1 mice were randomly assigned to high-fat (HF, n = 12) or low-fat (LF, n = 13) groups. Non-lethal, saphenous vein blood samples were collected at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment. Three-color flow cytometry was used to measure monocyte (CD11b+/CD14+) …
Grassland Governance And Common-Interest Communities, Anthony Schutz
Grassland Governance And Common-Interest Communities, Anthony Schutz
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
In the United States, today’s ranches are engaging in small-scale nature-based endeavors to diversify their income base. But the geographic boundary of the land they own creates a relatively small area within which to operate, and fragmented ownership diminishes the ability of any single landowner to produce nature-based income. Collective action among nearby landowners can produce a set of resources from which all members of the group can profit. Such action can enhance the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of grasslands and the populations that use them. This article shows that common-interest communities can be used to provide and allocate …
Delayed Wound Healing: Can Exercise Accelerate It?, K Todd Keylock, Hilary Young
Delayed Wound Healing: Can Exercise Accelerate It?, K Todd Keylock, Hilary Young
International Journal of Exercise Science
Poorly healing wounds affect millions around the world, yet preventive methods and low-cost, effective treatments are few. Wounds heal quickly through well-coordinated phases in those who are healthy and active but can become chronically nonhealing as a result of disease and inactivity. Recently it has been reported that moderate aerobic exercise accelerated healing rates in the aged. High levels of inflammation are known to delay wound healing, and aging and disease are associated with chronically increased inflammation. Therefore, exercise may help speed healing by reducing inflammation to healthier levels not only in the aged, but also in other populations with …
