Implementation Of Autotutor Lite, Lu Han
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is a very efficient form of e-Learning, but most of the current existing ITSs usually require advanced computational resources and specialized client software installation. Thus, there is a need for an ITS that is accessible online and is less computationally demanding. The immediate objective of this thesis is to describe the implementation of an online tutoring system that requires fewer computational resources. This system is called AutoTutor Lite, which runs in a web browser. Another objective is to use the Learner’s Characteristics Curves (LCC) as the evaluation method in AutoTutor Lite. By utilizing the semantic …

Enteroaggregative Escherichia Coli: An Emerging Enteric Food Borne Pathogen, A. Asea, P. Kaur, A. Chakraborti
ETSU Faculty Works
Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) are quite heterogeneous category of an emerging enteric pathogen associated with cases of acute or persistent diarrhea worldwide in children and adults, and over the past decade has received increasing attention as a cause of watery diarrhea, which is often persistent. EAEC infection is an important cause of diarrhea in outbreak and non-outbreak settings in developing and developed countries. Recently, EAEC has been implicated in the development of irritable bowel syndrome, but this remains to be confirmed. EAEC is defined as a diarrheal pathogen based on its characteristic aggregative adherence (AA) to HEp-2 cells in culture …

Data Curation Profiles Directory
The research addressed in this data curation profile is the study of the impact of the relative location of storms, in combination with other parameters, on subsequent weather development. He uses computational modeling to produce simulations of severe weather and the interaction of storms. The goal is to develop predictive models for severe weather activity. The data management issues surround sharing limitations associated with format of his data. The data and visualization produced by the specific software he uses can only be opened with that software. He is considering switching formats for wider accessibility.
The Development And Use Of A Geographic Information System For Evaluating The Association Between Pesticide Exposure And Prostate Cancer, Kristen Wells
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract 1 – A Geographic Information System for Evaluating Residential Pesticide Exposure and Prostate Cancer Incidence Agricultural pesticide exposure is hypothesized to be a risk factor for prostate cancer, and such exposures are of particular concern for men living in farming communities where large-scale pesticide applications occur. Prostate cancer incidence data were obtained from the State Health Registry of Iowa for the years 1996 through 2006, and county and census tract level age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated. Historical crop-specific land use records and pesticide sales data for the state of Iowa during 1990 were integrated into a geographic information system …

Memory Box, An Interactive Teaching Application For Young Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Itai Shperber
Theses
This thesis presents an outline and fundamental design for the development of an interactive teaching application for young students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or (ADHD). The project proposes a visual teaching aid used by sixth to ninth grade middle school students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders. The author argues that the combination of various modern instructional methods, focusing on user experience and interactivity, can improve the learning experience for students with ADHD. He also argues that students can achieve higher marks and improve their overall educational experiences by adding visual and interactive elements to the written educational material. The …

Combat Exposure, Agency, Perceived Threat, Guilt, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Iraq And Afghanistan War Veterans, Hsin-Hsin Huang
Dissertations
This study assessed how various combat experiences related to post-deployment adjustment among 289 Iraq/Afghanistan veterans. The study examined the relationships among three predictor variables (combat exposure, agency, perceived threat), one mediator (guilt), and two criterion factors (posttraumatic stress disorder/PTSD, and psychological wellbeing/PWB). It distinguished agency (e.g., firing or killing) from combat exposure (e.g., being fired at or witnessing). The study sought to: a) examine whether combat exposure differs from agency as constructs of combat experiences; b) determine the contributions of three predictors to the degree of PTSD and PWB; and c) determine whether guilt mediated the relationships between the three …

Background. Lysozymes are enzymes that lyse bacterial cell walls, an activity widely used for host defense but also modified in some instances for digestion. The biochemical and evolutionary changes between these different functional forms has been well-studied in the c-type lysozymes of vertebrates, but less so in the i-type lysozymes prevalent in most invertebrate animals. Some bivalve molluscs possess both defensive and digestive lysozymes. Results. We report a third lysozyme from the oyster Crassostrea virginica, cv-lysozyme 3. The chemical properties of cv-lysozyme 3 (including molecular weight, isoelectric point, basic amino acid residue number, and predicted protease cutting sites) suggest it …

Six Decades Of Agricultural Land Use Change In Bangladesh: Effects On Crop Diversity, Productivity, Food Availability And The Environment, 1948-2006, S Rahman
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper provides a detailed analysis of agricultural land use change in Bangladesh over a 59-year period (1948-2006) and examines how these have impacted crop diversity, productivity, food availability and the environment. The key findings of the analysis are: first, land use intensity has increased significantly over this period, mainly from the widespread adoption of a rice-based Green Revolution technology package beginning in the early 1960s; second, contrary to expectation, crop diversity too has increased; third, although land productivity has increased significantly, declines in the productivity of fertilizers and pesticides raise doubts over sustaining agricultural growth; fourth, food availability has …

Vaudeville: A How To Guide, Evan Anderson
Vaudeville: A How To Guide, Evan Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
At the turn of the twentieth century vaudeville was the most prevalent form of theatrical entertainment. With more than 1,500 houses across the country, vaudeville reached in excess of 30 million audience members each year. It directly led to the advent of film and radio. Yet barely one hundred years later vaudeville has been forgotten by the once loyal masses. This guide is meant to help counter vaudeville’s fall. By adding together a basic script consisting of comedy and dramatic sketches, original works and classic vaudeville acts with music and information on the how and whys of vaudeville, this guide …

The Role Of Multilevel Selection In The Evolution Of Sexual Conflict In The Water Strider Aquarius Remigis, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, David Sloan Wilson, Michael J. Dlugos, John W. Pepper

In evolution, exploitative strategies often create a paradox in which the most successful individual strategy “within” the group is also the most detrimental strategy “for” the group, potentially resulting in extinction. With regard to sexual conflict, the overexploitation of females by harmful males can yield similar consequences. Despite these evolutionary implications, little research has addressed why sexual conflict does not ultimately drive populations to extinction. One possibility is that groups experiencing less sexual conflict are more productive than groups with greater conflict. However, most studies of sexual conflict are conducted in a single isolated group, disregarding the potential for selection …
Estimating The Reliability Of Concept Map Ratings Using A Scoring Rubric Based On Three Attributes, Laura Jimenez
Estimating The Reliability Of Concept Map Ratings Using A Scoring Rubric Based On Three Attributes, Laura Jimenez
Theses and Dissertations
Concept maps provide a way to assess how well students have developed an organized understanding of how the concepts taught in a unit are interrelated and fit together. However, concept maps are challenging to score because of the idiosyncratic ways in which students organize their knowledge (McClure, Sonak, & Suen, 1999). The construct a map or C-mapping" task has been shown to capture students' organized understanding. This "C-mapping" task involves giving students a list of concepts and asking them to produce a map showing how these concepts are interrelated. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to determine to …

The Mechanism Of Obesity In Rai1+/- Mice, Kristie Schmidt
Theses and Dissertations
Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a genetic disorder caused by a deletion or mutation of the retinoic acid induced 1 (RAI1) gene on chromosome 17p11.2 that results in haploinsufficiency. SMS patients with a deletion account for 90% of the cases, while the other 10% have a mutation in RAI1. The syndrome is characterized by cognitive impairment, craniofacial abnormalities, sleep disturbances, developmental delay, obesity, and behavioral phenotypes. SMS is thought to affect 1:25,000 live births, although due to similar infantile phenotypes with Down syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome, SMS may be mis- or under-diagnosed. In a study of 54 children, it was shown …
