The Creativity Loophole: Needlework, Social Conventions, And The Permissibility Of Creative Expression For Early American Women, Alyce Graham Aug 2010

The Creativity Loophole: Needlework, Social Conventions, And The Permissibility Of Creative Expression For Early American Women, Alyce Graham

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates creative expression through needlework by wealthy or elite women in the eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century, focusing on women in the United States South. This inquiry begins in broad terms and proceeds to the close examination of one particular needlework sampler held in the collection of the Valentine Richmond History Center. The first chapter uses prescriptive literature popular in the eighteenth century to establish the restrictive, obedient, and subservient expectations for women’s behavior. The second chapter explores the reasons that the same books that prohibited many forms of pleasure promoted needlework as an acceptable activity for women. This …

The Effects Of Reward Omission And Change On Proactive Interference In Spatial Alternation, William S. Terry Aug 2010

The Effects Of Reward Omission And Change On Proactive Interference In Spatial Alternation, William S. Terry

The Psychological Record

Whether reward omission on the sample runs of a delayed alternation task would reduce proactive interference was tested in two experiments. On the first run of a trial, the animal entered one arm of a maze to obtain a food reward; on the second run the reward was available in the opposite arm. Alternation declined across a block of massed trials, but there was less of a decrease when the reward was omitted in the final trial or when another maze was substituted. In a task that required retention of three mazes at a time, alternation again declined across massed …

Predictive Data-Derived Bayesian Statistic-Transport Model And Simulator Of Sunken Oil Mass, Maria Angelica Echavarria Gregory Aug 2010

Predictive Data-Derived Bayesian Statistic-Transport Model And Simulator Of Sunken Oil Mass, Maria Angelica Echavarria Gregory

Open Access Dissertations

Sunken oil is difficult to locate because remote sensing techniques cannot as yet provide views of sunken oil over large areas. Moreover, the oil may re-suspend and sink with changes in salinity, sediment load, and temperature, making deterministic fate models difficult to deploy and calibrate when even the presence of sunken oil is difficult to assess. For these reasons, together with the expense of field data collection, there is a need for a statistical technique integrating limited data collection with stochastic transport modeling. Predictive Bayesian modeling techniques have been developed and demonstrated for exploiting limited information for decision support in …

Health and Clinical Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Graft-versus-host disease is the single most important obstacle facing successful allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Even with current immunosuppressive therapies, morbidity and mortality rates are high. Current therapies including cyclosporine A (CyA) and related compounds target IL-2 signaling. However, although these compounds offer great benefit, they are also associated with multiple toxicities. Therefore, new compounds with a greater efficacy and reduced toxicity are needed to enable us to overcome this hurdle.

METHODS: The allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) is a unique ex vivo method to study a drug's action on the initial events resulting in T-cell activation and proliferation, …

Mitochondrial Control Region Variation Among The Subspecies Of Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone), Ranajit Das Aug 2010

Mitochondrial Control Region Variation Among The Subspecies Of Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone), Ranajit Das

Theses

Sarus cranes (Grus antigone) are the tallest members of the crane family, Gruidae. They are found in four geographically distinct regions: northwest India (Indian Sarus- Grus antigone antigone), southeast Asia (Burmese Sarus- Grus antigone sharpei) and northern Australia (Australian Sarus- Grus antigone gillae). Although the three subspecies are morphologically distinct, their genetic distinctness is unclear. In this study, I focused on control region sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to assess the genetic and phylogeographic distinctness of Sarus subspecies. I used samples from four fragmented populations, seven from India, 16 from southeast Asia, five from Myanmar and eight from Australia. Phylogenetic …

Age-Related Deterioration Of Rod Vision In Mice, Alexander V. Kolesnikov, Jie Fan, Rosalie K. Crouch, Vladimir J. Kefalov

Open Access Publications

Even in healthy individuals, aging leads to deterioration in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field, and dark adaptation. Little is known about the neural mechanisms that drive the age-related changes of the retina and, more specifically, photoreceptors. According to one hypothesis, the age-related deterioration in rod function is due to the limited availability of 11-cis-retinal for rod pigment formation. To determine how aging affects rod photoreceptors and to test the retinoid-deficiency hypothesis, we compared the morphological and functional properties of rods of adult and aged B6D2F1/J mice. We found that the number of rods and the length of their outer …

Development And Applications Of The Hint Forcefield In Prediction Of Antibiotic Efflux And Virtual Screening For Antivirals, Aurijit Sarkar

Theses and Dissertations

This work was aimed at developing novel tools that utilize HINT, an empirical forcefield capable of quantitating both hydrophobic and hydrophilic (hydropathic) interactions, for implementation in theoretical biology and drug discovery/design. The role of hydrophobicity in determination of macromolecular structure and formation of complexes in biological molecules is undeniable and has been the subject of research across several decades. Hydrophobicity is introduced, with a review of its history and contemporary theories. This is followed by a description of various methods that quantify this all-pervading phenomenon and their use in protein folding and contemporary drug design projects – including a detailed …

Mechanisms Of Oxidant Generation By Catalase, Diane E. Heck, Michael Shakarjian, Hong-Duck Kim, Jeffrey Laskin, Anna M. Vetrano Aug 2010

Mechanisms Of Oxidant Generation By Catalase, Diane E. Heck, Michael Shakarjian, Hong-Duck Kim, Jeffrey Laskin, Anna M. Vetrano

NYMC Faculty Publications

The enzyme catalase converts solar radiation into reactive oxidant species (ROS). In this study, we report that several bacterial catalases (hydroperoxidases, HP), including Escherichia coli HP-I and HP-II also generate reactive oxidants in response to ultraviolet B light (UVB). HP-I and HP-II are identical except for the presence of NADPH. We found that only one of the catalases, HPI, produces oxidants in response to UVB light, indicating a potential role for the nucleotide in ROS production. This prompts us to speculate that NADPH may act as a cofactor regulating ROS generation by mammalian catalases. Structural analysis of the NADPH domains …

Evaluation Of The Loss Of Functionality Of Xanthan Gum Based Drill-In Fluid And Its Impact On Coiled Tubing Drilling, Idowu Dosunmu Aug 2010

Evaluation Of The Loss Of Functionality Of Xanthan Gum Based Drill-In Fluid And Its Impact On Coiled Tubing Drilling, Idowu Dosunmu

Engineering

"A challenge that has recently arisen in coiled tubing drilling is the loss of functionality of xanthan gum drill-in fluid with drilled depth in the well. The overall objective of this study is to analyze and assess the causes for this loss of optimal functionality. Twenty-four field samples from two field cases and five laboratory prepared samples were tested to study the changes in theological parameters, salinity effects and compatibility with shale formations. It was observed that the fluid's functionality was directly related to low shear rate viscosity, which is affected by xanthan gum concentration and the ionic strength of …

PT subjects scored lower than term subjects on …

Science Education In Rural America: Adaptations For The Ivory Tower, Gregory S. Van Doren Aug 2010

Science Education In Rural America: Adaptations For The Ivory Tower, Gregory S. Van Doren

Indigenous Studies

This thesis illustrated what can happen when academic culture disconnects from the cultures surrounding it. It showed that formal school environments are not always the best places to learn. A discussion of the debate between coherence and fragmentation learning theories illustrated academic chasms and a mindset that science education must originate from within ivory towers to be valued. Rationales for place-based science education were developed. Two National Science Foundation initiatives were compared and contrasted for relevance to Native Science education (a) Informal Science Education and (b) Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibilities. A National Science Foundation instrument, known …

Growth Rates Of Juvenile Scolelepis Squamata (Polychaeta: Spionidae) From The Chukchi Sea Fast Ice, Brenna Mcconnell Aug 2010

Growth Rates Of Juvenile Scolelepis Squamata (Polychaeta: Spionidae) From The Chukchi Sea Fast Ice, Brenna Mcconnell

Marine Biology

"Arctic coastal fast ice supports high densities of sea ice algae, and is thermally stable at the ice-water interface at around the freezing point of sea water, providing a suitable environment for sympagic meiofauna feeding on the sea ice algae during spring months. Changes in water temperature due to seasonality and climate change may affect physiological processes of these organisms. We tested the hypothesis that juvenile growth rates of a common sympagic polychaete, Scolelepis squamata (Polychaeta: Spionidae), would be significantly faster at typical spring sea ice algal concentrations compared to concurrent phytoplankton concentrations and at open water summer versus winter …

Oxidative Stress Is Transient And Tissue-Specific During Cold Acclimation Of Threespine Sticklebacks, Aaron R. Kammer

Biological Sciences

We sought to determine if oxidative stress occurs in liver, oxidative muscle or glycolytic muscle of threespine sticklebacks during cold acclimation. Fishes were held at 20°C for 12 wks and then acclimated to 8°C for 9 wks or held at 20°C for an additional 9 wks. Animals were harvested during the first four days of cold acclimation, and at wk 1, 4 and 9. Protein carbonyls were quantified as an indirect measure of the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), levels of SOD mRNA, and glutathione levels were quantified as indices of protection against …

Fishing For Tourists: Cultural Tourism And Its Origins In Teslin, Yukon Territory, Canada, Amanda Foote Aug 2010

Fishing For Tourists: Cultural Tourism And Its Origins In Teslin, Yukon Territory, Canada, Amanda Foote

Arctic and Northern Studies

"Since before settling on the shores of Teslin Lake, the Inland Tlingit people have fished its waters. Today the people of Teslin also cast their nets along the Alaska Highway to lure tourists off the busy corridor. For small communities along the route, travelers represent both challenges and opportunities. Especially in First Nations communities decisions regarding tourism such as what products to develop, what services to provide, and how much access to allow carry much weight. This research constitutes a case study examining cultural tourism as a means of sustainable economic development for the community of Teslin, Yukon. It describes …

Changes In Traditional Gender Roles For Alaska Natives: Their Effects On Sense Of Purpose, Direction, Identity, And Family And Community Stature, Eleanor Kyle Wirts Aug 2010

Changes In Traditional Gender Roles For Alaska Natives: Their Effects On Sense Of Purpose, Direction, Identity, And Family And Community Stature, Eleanor Kyle Wirts

Arctic and Northern Studies

"In the past century, especially since the 1960s, Alaska Natives have faced rapid cultural and socio-economic change as Western influences have increasingly infiltrated the Native life-ways; since the 1960s social problems, including alcohol abuse, violence, and suicide have plagued Native individuals, families and communities. Arguably, a source of these social problems is the striking shift from clearly defined gender roles for Native adults that guided youth to adulthood in the past to opaque and ambiguous roles for adults that draw on both traditional and Western cultures. Historically, clearly defined gender roles provided youth with the role models necessary for maturing …

The Relationship Between Rainbow Trout Stocking Success And Habitat Variables In Interior Alaska Lakes, Kelly A. Mansfield Aug 2010

The Relationship Between Rainbow Trout Stocking Success And Habitat Variables In Interior Alaska Lakes, Kelly A. Mansfield

Fisheries

"Fish are stocked for a variety of reasons, including the providence of diverse angling opportunities. Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss are the most widely stocked sport fish species in North America. In Interior Alaska, over 90 of the 137 lakes chosen for stocking are stocked with rainbow trout. To optimize fish stocking programs, managers require a better understanding of the lake characteristics associated with success in meeting program objectives, for assessment of potential lakes proposed for stocking, and to address angler inquiries. For my project, I used a model-selection process with lake morphometric and biotic data from 36 stocked lakes in …

Examination Of Gear Type Efficacy, Tagging Methodology, And Population Structure For Establishing A Directed Enteroctopus Dofleini Fishery, Patrick D. Barry Aug 2010

Examination Of Gear Type Efficacy, Tagging Methodology, And Population Structure For Establishing A Directed Enteroctopus Dofleini Fishery, Patrick D. Barry

Fisheries

"In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in a directed fishery for North Pacific giant octopus, Enteroctopus dofleini. This species continues to be managed as a bycatch only species through the use of commisioner's permits primarily due to the lack of information on the basic ecology of E. dofleini and the logisitics of management. In the summer of 2007, we completed a survey in Kachemak Bay, Alaska, to determine the efficiency of different gear types for targeting E. dofleini, compared different methods of tagging individuals for movement and abundance estimates, and collected tissue samples for use in a …

Reproductive Biology And Movement Patterns Of Humpback Whitefish And Least Cisco In The Minto Flats-Chatanika River Complex, Alaska, Aaron Wayne Dupuis Aug 2010

Reproductive Biology And Movement Patterns Of Humpback Whitefish And Least Cisco In The Minto Flats-Chatanika River Complex, Alaska, Aaron Wayne Dupuis

Fisheries

"Humpback whitefish Coregonus pidschian and least cisco C. sardinella are two species of coregonids common to the interior of Alaska and are a food resource for rural and urban communities. These fishes exhibit variation in life-history characteristics throughout their range, and many basic life-history questions remain unanswered. My objectives were to describe the spawning movements and identify the current distribution of putative spawning areas for humpback whitefish, and to assess the reproductive biology of humpback whitefish and least cisco in the Minto Flats-Chatanika River complex. Observed movement patterns indicated that humpback whitefish exhibited complex dispersals to putative spawning areas. Two …

A Remote Sensing-Gis Based Approach To Identify And Model Spawning Habitat For Fall Chum Salmon In A Sub-Arctic, Glacially-Fed River, Lisa South Aug 2010

A Remote Sensing-Gis Based Approach To Identify And Model Spawning Habitat For Fall Chum Salmon In A Sub-Arctic, Glacially-Fed River, Lisa South

Fisheries

"At northern extremes, fish habitat requirements are often linked to thermal preferences and the presence of overwintering habitat. The goal of this study was to identify spawning habitat for fall chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and model habitat selection from spatial distributions of tagged individuals in the mainstem Tanana River, Alaska. I hypothesized that the presence of groundwater, which provides thermal refugia for overwinter incubation, would be most important for fall chum salmon. Models included braiding, sinuosity, open water surface area (indicating significant groundwater influence), and open water persistence (consistent presence of open water for a 12 year period according to …

Communities Developing In Association With Place: Testament Of Ginebra Blanis, 1574, Stefanie Siegmund Aug 2010

Communities Developing In Association With Place: Testament Of Ginebra Blanis, 1574, Stefanie Siegmund

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History

Recent attention to Jewish demography and to the spatial characteristics of Jewish residential patterns has demonstrated that in more than one region, Early Modern Jews were associated with each other more loosely, and less locally, than has previously been imagined. The "communities" to which Jews may have felt they belonged are difficult to know as they are likely to have varied with economic or social status, gender, age, and ethnic origin. The testament translated below is that of a merchant woman in the first years of the existence of the Florentine ghetto (founded 1571). The study of early modern bequests …
