In Appreciation Of The Kind Of Rhetoric We Learn In School: An Institutional Perspective On The Rhetorical Situation And On Education, Kathleen F. Mcconnell
In Appreciation Of The Kind Of Rhetoric We Learn In School: An Institutional Perspective On The Rhetorical Situation And On Education, Kathleen F. Mcconnell
Faculty Publications
Theoretical discussion of the rhetorical situation has been dedicated largely to questions of its ontology and of how it is constituted. Where this ontological orientation has inclined theorists to treat the concept as a theoretical premise, an institutional orientation would instead frame constructivist accounts of the rhetorical situation as a political-pedagogical commitment and treat the ethical obligations that arise from any given situation as bound to specific institutional forms. From an institutional perspective, the rhetorical situation is to conscience as the institution of school is to education. The distinction of both rhetorical situations and schools lies not in their contrivedness …

Prevalence Of Staphylococcus Aureus And Staphylococcus Intermedius Among Pet Industry Employees And Transfer Of Erm Genes From S. Aureus To S. Intermedius Colonizing Healthy People, Xing Fu
Student Theses and Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus is a ubiquitous opportunistic pathogen carried by humans. Staphylococcus intermedius is a zoonotic pathogen showing a potential to infect humans. Transfer of antibiotic resistance genes between bacteria accelerates the spread of antibiotic resistance. In this project, biochemical tests combined with PCR were employed to identify the colonization rates of S. aureus and S. intermedius in pet industry employees and the transfer of erythromycin rRNA methylase genes, ermA and ermC, between them. The colonization rates of S. aureus and S. intermedius were 24% and 2% respectively, which were low and indicates daily contact with animals may not facilitate the …

Jewish Community And Identity In The Early Modern Period, Emw 2010
Jewish Community And Identity In The Early Modern Period, Emw 2010
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The 7th Early Modern Workshop took place from August 15-17, 2010 at Wesleyan University. The topic was “Jewish Community and Identity in the Early Modern Period.”
The traditional approach to “Jewish community” has been focused on the formal communal structures of Jewish self-government. This approach often traced the presence of “autonomous” Jewish self-government in the diaspora from antiquity till the modern times, when, it was stressed, these “autonomous” structures were shattered by the interference of modern states in Jewish communal affairs.
Scholars discussed takkanot (decisions and regulations by Jewish community leaders), privileges granted to Jews, correspondence between Jews across different …

A natural product chemistry-based approach was applied to discover small-molecule inhibitors of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1). A Petrosaspongia mycofijiensis marine sponge extract yielded mycothiazole (1), a solid tumor selective compound with no known mechanism for its cell line-dependent cytotoxic activity. Compound 1 inhibited hypoxic HIF-1 signaling in tumor cells (IC(50) 1nM) that correlated with the suppression of hypoxia-stimulated tumor angiogenesis in vitro. However, 1 exhibited pronounced neurotoxicity in vitro. Mechanistic studies revealed that 1 selectively suppresses mitochondrial respiration at complex I (NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase). Unlike rotenone, MPP(+), annonaceous acetogenins, piericidin A, and other complex I inhibitors, mycothiazole is a mixed polyketide/peptide-derived compound …

A food poisoning incident has occurred due to ingestion of red grouper meat on February 2006 in southern Taiwan. Two patients showed diarrhea, muscle weakness, vertigo and severe muscle pain. The 2 pieces of causative residues were investigated by toxicity assay. In order to identify the fish species of causative samples, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) technique was applied in this study. According to the low molecular weight region (<30.0 kD) of species-specific patterns extracted from both myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic proteins, two poisoning samples were identified as Lutjanus bohar. L. bohar is a notorious grouper species with ciguatera in …

Application Of Acoustic Telemetry To Assess Residency And Movements Of Rockfish And Lingcod At Created And Natural Habitats In Prince William Sound, Brad F. Reynolds, Sean P. Powers, Mary Anne Bishop
University Faculty and Staff Publications
Loss and/or degradation of nearshore habitats have led to increased efforts to restore or enhance many of these habitats, particularly those that are deemed essential for marine fishes. Copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus) and lingcod (Ophiodon enlongatus) are dominant members of the typical reef fish community that inhabit rocky and high-relief substrates along the Pacific Northwest. We used acoustic telemetry to document their residency and movements in the nearshore waters of Prince William Sound, Alaska in order to assess use of created reef habitat in an individual-based manner. A total of 57 fish were surgically implanted with …
The Synthespian’S Animated Prehistory: The Monkees, The Archies, Don Kirshner, And The Politics Of “Virtual Labor”, Matt Stahl
FIMS Publications
This article explores the political-economic “prehistory” of the “synthespian” by tracing the emergence of the rock and roll cartoon The Archies (1968—78) from the ashes of the live-action sitcom The Monkees (1966—68) through the career of music publisher and producer Don Kirshner. Drawing on original interviews with the producers of The Archies, it argues that early experiments in “fixing” variable entertainment capital through the organization of divisions of nonproprietary authorship contributed to the development of rights-free “virtual labor.” This analysis brings to light the logics and politics that are never far from “purely technical” advances in entertainment production. The trajectory …

Caveolin-1 (CAV1) is the main structural component of Caveolae which are plasma membrane invaginations that participate in vesicular trafficking and signal transduction events. Although, evidence has recently accumulated describing the function of CAV1 in several cancer types, its role in melanoma tumor formation and progression remains poorly explored. Here, by employing B16F10 melanoma cells as an experimental system, we directly explore the function of CAV1 in melanoma tumor growth and metastasis. We first show that CAV1 expression promotes proliferation while it suppresses migration and invasion of B16F10 cells in vitro. When orthotopically implanted in the skin of mice, B16F10 cells …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Mechanical Heart Valve Performance Using A Novel Test Chamber In An Automated Mock Circulatory Loop, Antonio Walker
In Vitro Evaluation Of Mechanical Heart Valve Performance Using A Novel Test Chamber In An Automated Mock Circulatory Loop, Antonio Walker
Theses and Dissertations
Valvular heart disease (VHD) continues to have significant effects on many people’s lives, with numbers expected to grow tremendously over the next few years. Individuals suffering from severe valvular heart disease usually require a heart valve transplant in order to restore the native valve’s vital unidirectional flow regulation. Therefore, artificial heart valve (AHV) research is of very high importance. Previous research studies have provided substantial input in the realm of AHV design relative to durability, thrombotic and hemolytic potential, and overall functionality. However, modifications continue to be warranted due to limitations in the accuracy and time efficiency of the in …
Uncertainty Compensation In Human Attention: Evidence From Response Times And Fixation Durations, S. Lee Hong, Melissa R. Beck
Uncertainty Compensation In Human Attention: Evidence From Response Times And Fixation Durations, S. Lee Hong, Melissa R. Beck
Faculty Publications
Background: Uncertainty and predictability have remained at the center of the study of human attention. Yet, studies have only examined whether response times (RT) or fixations were longer or shorter under levels of stimulus uncertainty. To date, no study has examined patterns of stimuli and responses through a unifying framework of uncertainty. Methodology/Principal Findings: We asked 29 college students to generate repeated responses to a continuous series of visual stimuli presented on a computer monitor. Subjects produced these responses by pressing on a keypad as soon a target was detected (regardless of position) while the durations of their visual fixations …

Linkage & Selective Mapping And Qtl Analysis In A Harosoy X Clark Population Of 300 Rils, Sadal Hwang
Linkage & Selective Mapping And Qtl Analysis In A Harosoy X Clark Population Of 300 Rils, Sadal Hwang
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Four of the 12 major Glycine max ancestors of all modern elite U.S.A. soybean cultivars were the grandparents of Harosoy and Clark, so a Harosoy x Clark population would include some of that genetic diversity. A mating of eight Harosoy and eight Clark plants generated eight F1 plants. The eight F1:2 families were advanced via a plant-to-row selfing method to produce 300 F6-derived RILs that were genotyped with 266 SSR, 481 SNP, and 4 classical markers. SNPs were genotyped with the Illumina 1536-SNP assay. Three linkage maps, SSR, SNP, and SSR-SNP, were constructed with a genotyping error of < 1 %. Each map was compared with the published soybean consensus map. The best subset of 94 RILs for a high-resolution framework (joint) map was selected based on the expected bin length statistic computed with MapPop. The QTLs of seven traits measured in a 2-year replicated performance trial of the 300 RILs were identified using composite interval mapping (CIM) and multiple-interval mapping (MIM). QTL x Year effects in multiple trait analysis were compared with results of multiple-interval mapping. QTL x QTL effects were identified in MIM.
Effects Of Teaching Emotions To Students With High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders Through Picture Books, Jennifer M. Fletcher
Effects Of Teaching Emotions To Students With High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders Through Picture Books, Jennifer M. Fletcher
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) struggle with identifying others' emotions, which impacts their ability to successfully interact in social situations. Because of the increasing number of children identified with ASD, effective techniques are needed to help children identify emotions in others. The use of technology is being researched as a way to help children with emotion identification. However, technology is not always available for teachers to use in classrooms, whereas picture books are much easier to access and have been successfully used to improve students' social skills. Picture books are naturally used in classroom, home, and therapy settings. This …
