Pharmacological Characterization Of Gabaa Receptors In Taurine-Fed Mice, William J. L’Amoreaux, Alexandra Marsillo, Abdeslem El Idrissi
Publications and Research
Background Taurine is one of the most abundant free amino acids especially in excitable tissues, with wide physiological actions. Chronic supplementation of taurine in drinking water to mice increases brain excitability mainly through alterations in the inhibitory GABAergic system. These changes include elevated expression level of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and increased levels of GABA. Additionally we reported that GABAA receptors were down regulated with chronic administration of taurine. Here, we investigated pharmacologically the functional significance of decreased / or change in subunit composition of the GABAA receptors by determining the threshold for picrotoxin-induced seizures. Picrotoxin, an antagonist of GABAA …

Taurine Regulation Of Short Term Synaptic Plasticity In Fragile X Mice, Abdeslem El Idrissi, Lorenz S. Neuwirth, William L’Amoreaux
Publications and Research
Background Fragile X Syndrome is the most common known genetic cause of autism. The Fmr1-KO mouse, lacks the fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP), and is used as a model of the syndrome. The core behavioral deficits of autism may be conceptualized either as excessive adherence to patterns as seen in repetitive actions and aberrant language, or as insensitivity to subtle but socially important changes in patterns. The hippocampus receives information from the entorhinal cortex and plays a crucial role in the processing of patterned information. To gain more insight into the physiological function of FMRP and the neuronal mechanisms …

Neuro-Endocrine Basis For Altered Plasma Glucose Homeostasis In The Fragile X Mouse, Abdeslem El Idrissi, Xin Yan, Francoise Sidime, William L’Amoreaux
Publications and Research
Background The fragile X mouse model shows an increase in seizure susceptibility, indicating an involvement of the GABAergic system via an alteration in cellular excitability. In the brain, we have previously described a reduction in GABAA receptor expression as a likely basis for this susceptibility. In the brains of fragile X mice, this reduction in receptor expression culminates with a concomitant increase in the expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), the enzyme responsible for GABA synthesis. Further, voltage-sensitive calcium channel expression is reduced in the pancreas of the fragile X mouse. Since there are considerable similarities in the GABAergic system …

The Histology And Histochemistry Of Rathke's Glands In The Mississippi Mud Turtle, Kinosternon Subrubrum Hippocrepis, Sarah Jean Webb
Student Theses and Dissertations
Rathke's glands are found in both extinct and extant turtle species, specifically in both megaorders Pleurodira and Cryptodira. The glands are homologous in all turtles and are thought to be the most ancient vertebrate integumentary gland. The anatomy of Rathke's glands in the Mississippi mud turtle, Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis, was examined in this study. Light and scanning electron microscopy were utilized, along with histochemical methods, for the examination of the glands. Museum specimens collected from eight counties within Arkansas from 1989-2009 were examined. This species has two pairs of glands, one axillary and one inguinal, which are usually bi-lobed. The …
Demographics And Terrestrial Ecology Of An Amphibian Community In A Large Ephemeral Pond In The Ozark Mountains, Corey Lynn Shaffer
Demographics And Terrestrial Ecology Of An Amphibian Community In A Large Ephemeral Pond In The Ozark Mountains, Corey Lynn Shaffer
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the aquatic and terrestrial ecology of an amphibian community at an ephemeral pond in the Ozark Mountains. Literature on amphibian community assemblage is reviewed, and reasons for species abundance at the pond (hydrology, interspecific interactions, and terrestrial habitat requirements) are inferred. Sixteen species were observed using Stout Pond. Emigration orientation, distance of migration, and terrestrial macrohabitat use are assessed for some species. Emigration was concentrated in the south and southwest toward northeastern hillsides. Species avoided pine forests in the southeast and younger forests in the northwest. On average, species migrated from 80-200 m to reach terrestrial home …
Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta
Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Morro Bay estuary, located on the central Coast of California approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is one of the most important wetlands on the west Coast as it supports wide variety of habitats including numerous sensitive and endangered plant and animal species. Various studies have identified accelerated erosion and subsequent sedimentation as a major threat for sustainability of the bay. Watershed disturbances caused by agricultural activities are believed to be one of the major causes of the accelerated erosion and sedimentation. More than 200 conservation practices have been installed in the watershed since the mid-1990 …
Notonecta Exhibit Threat-Sensitive, Predator-Induced Dispersal, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe
Notonecta Exhibit Threat-Sensitive, Predator-Induced Dispersal, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe
Biological Sciences
Dispersal is a central process determining community structure in heterogeneous landscapes, and species interactions within habitats may be a major determinant of dispersal. Although the effects of species interactions on dispersal within habitats have been well studied, how species interactions affect the movement of individuals between habitats in a landscape has received less attention. We conducted two experiments to assess the extent to which predation risk affects dispersal from an aquatic habitat by a flight-capable semi-aquatic insect (Notonecta undulata). Exposure to non-lethal (caged) fish fed conspecifics increased dispersal rates in N. undulata. Moreover, dispersal rate was positively correlated with the …

Detecting Money Laundering And Terrorism Financing Activity In Second Life And World Of Warcraft, Angela S M Irwin, Jill Slay
International Cyber Resilience conference
In recent years there has been much debate about the risks posed by virtual environments. Concern is growing about the ease in which virtual worlds and virtual reality role-playing games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft can be used for economic crimes such as financially motivated cybercrime, money laundering and terrorism financing. Currently, virtual environments are not subject to the strict financial controls and reporting requirements of the real world, therefore, they offer an excellent opportunity for criminals and terrorism financers to carry out their illegal activities unhindered and with impunity. This paper demonstrates the need for suitable …

Converting Assessment Of Traditional Classroom Assignments To The E-Learning Environment, K. Virginia Hemby, Kelly Wilkinson, Tena B. Crews
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
While assessment in an e-classroom continues to develop, with a myriad of advantages and disadvantages, it must be explored to provide assistance to e-instructors so that students receive optimal feedback. Assessment is no longer the periodic formal process of exams and graded activities, which may or may not be discussed with the class; it is now in the context of a one-on-one relationship with the e-instructor and each student in the online course (Meyen, Aust, & Issacson, 2002).

A Gis Model To Predict Feral Pig (Sus Scrofa) Habitat On Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Brian Schnick
A Gis Model To Predict Feral Pig (Sus Scrofa) Habitat On Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Brian Schnick
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
The applicable Natural Resource area of this project is animal control and wildlife management, as wild pigs can be quite destructive to landscapes (Campbell, et al., 2010) (McCann, et al., 2008). Geographic Information System (GIS) predictive models have proven to be useful in regards to other mammals (Travaini, et al., 2007), raptors (Bustamante, et al., 2004), and pest species such as locusts (van der Werf, et al., 2005). Pigs are often nocturnal and bed down in heavy cover, hindering direct observation. Additionally, Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) encompasses over 400 square kilometers. Therefore, predictive modeling is an appropriate method for …
Determining Heritage Oak Tree Susceptibility To Sudden Oak Death Using Gis Risk Analysis, Michelle M. Guzdek
Determining Heritage Oak Tree Susceptibility To Sudden Oak Death Using Gis Risk Analysis, Michelle M. Guzdek
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
Sudden Oak Death (SOD), caused by the pathogenic water mold Phytophthora ramorum, has killed hundreds of thousands of oak trees in the California coastal regions, with redwood-tanoak forests being hit the hardest (Shoemaker et al., 2007). The term “sudden oak death” is used to describe the disease, because of how rapidly the pathogen has killed otherwise healthy tanoaks, virtually in a matter of weeks (COMTF 2010). SOD was first reported in California in 1994 and is believed to have originated from infected nursery or ornamental plants, but the source has never been identified (Mascheretti et al. 2008).

Improved Pcr Design For Mouse Dna By Training Finite State Machines, Salik R. Yadav, Steven M. Corns
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This project presents an updated method for classification of polymerase chain reaction primers in mice using finite state classifiers. This is done to compensate for many lab, organism and chemical specific factors that are costly. using Finite State Classifiers can help decrease the number of primers that fail to amplify correctly. for training these classifiers, five different evolutionary algorithms that use an incremental fitness reward are used. Variations to the number of generations and the values in the fitness reward are examined, and the resulting designs are presented. by controlling the fitness reward correctly, there is a potential to develop …

Muc4, The Integral Membrane Modulator Of Erbb2:The Effects Of Muc4 Expression On Erbb2 And Erbb3 Phosphorylation, Receptor Levels And Sub-Cellular Localization In Breast Cancer Cells Treated With Neuregulin, Patricia F. Boothe
Open Access Dissertations
Muc4, a heterodimeric transmembrane mucin containing EGF-like domains, has been described as an ErbB2-binding protein which modulates signaling via the ErbB2-ErbB3 pathway. In Muc4-transfected MCF-7 cells, Muc4 expression resulted in alteration of both the time course and phosphorylation levels of NRG beta 1 induced phosphorylation and activation of both ErbB2 and ErbB3. Muc4 significantly enhanced the autophosphorylation of ErbB2 over the early (defined 0-30 min) and intermediate (30-120 min) NRG beta 1 treatment times at three sites, Y1248, Y1221 and Y1139. The sites displayed differential maximal phosphorylation times. At Y1248 and Y1139, maximal phosphorylation occurred entirely during the early treatment …
