Predicting The Distribution Of Air Pollution Sensitive Lichens Using Habitat Niche Modeling, Gajendra Shrestha Aug 2010

Predicting The Distribution Of Air Pollution Sensitive Lichens Using Habitat Niche Modeling, Gajendra Shrestha

Theses and Dissertations

Usnea hirta and Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia are commonly used as bio-monitors of air quality. In order to more accurately and efficiently determine the distribution of these two sensitive indicator species, we have developed a probabilistic distribution map as a function of 9 macroclimatic and topographic variables for the White River National Forest, Colorado using Non-Parametric Multiplicative Regression (NPMR) analysis. Furthermore, we also developed a logistic regression (LR) model for X. cumberlandia in order to evaluate the strengths and limitations of the NPMR model. The best model for U. hirta included four variables - solar radiation, average monthly precipitation, average monthly minimum …

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Research has shown the human brain is organized into separable functional networks during rest and varied states of cognition, and that aging is associated with specific network dysfunctions. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine low-frequency (0.008 < f < 0.08 Hz) coherence of cognitively relevant and sensory brain networks in older adults who participated in a 1-year intervention trial, comparing the effects of aerobic and nonaerobic fitness training on brain function and cognition. Results showed that aerobic training improved the aging brain’s resting functional efficiency in higher-level cognitive networks. One year of walking increased functional connectivity between aspects of the frontal, posterior, and temporal cortices within the Default Mode Network and a Frontal Executive Network, two brain networks central to brain dysfunction in aging. Length of training was also an important factor. Effects in favor of the walking group were observed only after 12 months of training, compared to non-significant trends after 6 months. A non-aerobic stretching and toning group also showed increased functional connectivity in the DMN after 6 months and in a Frontal Parietal Network after 12 months, possibly reflecting experience-dependent plasticity. Finally, we found that changes in functional connectivity were behaviorally relevant. Increased functional connectivity was associated with greater improvement in executive function. Therefore the study provides the first evidence for exercise-induced functional plasticity in large-scale brain systems in the aging brain, using functional connectivity techniques, and offers new insight into the role of aerobic fitness in attenuating age-related brain dysfunction.

Are Unfamiliar Neighbours Considered To Be Dear-Enemies?, Elodie Briefer, Fanny Rybak, Thierry Aubin

Sentience Collection

Background: Discriminating threatening individuals from non-threatening ones allow territory owners to modulate their territorial responses according to the threat posed by each intruder. This ability reduces costs associated with territorial defence. Reduced aggression towards familiar adjacent neighbours, termed the dear-enemy effect, has been shown in numerous species. An important question that has never been investigated is whether territory owners perceive distant neighbours established in the same group as strangers because of their unfamiliarity, or as dear-enemies because of their group membership.

Methodology/Principal Findings: To investigate this question, we played back to male skylarks (Alauda arvensis) songs of adjacent neighbours, distant …

National Renewable Energy Policy 2009-2030, Ministry Of Energy And Mining

Latin American Energy Policies

This document presents Jamaica s National Renewable Energy Policy which is designed to achieve: A well-developed, vibrant and diversified renewable energy sector that contributes to Jamaica s energy security and a sustainable future. This policy supports the implementation of the National Energy Policy 2009-2030 which seeks to provide affordable and accessible energy supplies with long-term energy security. The creation of this policy was a specific response to the National Energy Policy which calls for the development of the energy sector especially in areas related to renewables, diversification fuels, biofuels and waste-to-energy.

Mother-Of-Pearls: The Entwined History Of Shell And Pearl In Arkansas, Lenore Shoults Aug 2010

Mother-Of-Pearls: The Entwined History Of Shell And Pearl In Arkansas, Lenore Shoults

Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the culture and commerce surrounding Arkansas's freshwater mussel. Slightly more than a century ago it generated excitement for its pearls. The next fifty years or so transformed tons of shell into millions of button blanks bound for northern and eastern finishing plants. During the last half of the twentieth century, beads made from the shell inoculated oysters for the cultured pearl industry. Regionally, the mollusk's usage extends back to early Native Americans who made tools from the shell and used the pearls for adornment or burial practices. Medieval and Renaissance Europeans desired pearls as a display of …

Genetic Diversity And Distribution Of Selected Freshwater Mollusks (Gastropoda And Bivalvia) From West Of The Mississippi River With An Emphasis On Arkansas Taxa, David Michael Hayes Aug 2010

Genetic Diversity And Distribution Of Selected Freshwater Mollusks (Gastropoda And Bivalvia) From West Of The Mississippi River With An Emphasis On Arkansas Taxa, David Michael Hayes

Student Theses and Dissertations

Freshwater mollusks represent one of the most imperiled groups in North America. Basic information reguarding distribution, species limits, and evolutionary relationships is lacking. In an effort to fill in data gaps reguarding diversity and distribution of freshwater mollusks, particularly west of the Mississippi River, I identified two main objectives. The first objective was to examine two taxonomically challenging groups (Pleuroceridae:Gastropoda and Unionidae:Pleurobemini) using molecular phylogenetics. The goal of this work was to provide a molecular hypothesis to aid in sorting out phenotypic plasticity and cryptic diversity. The second objective was to conduct a survey of freshwater gastropods from the Interior …

A Role For Cilia In Endocardial Cushion Development, Laura Gilbert Hollingsworth Cooney Aug 2010

A Role For Cilia In Endocardial Cushion Development, Laura Gilbert Hollingsworth Cooney

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Congenital heart defects due to the aberrant development of the atrioventricular (AV) valves and septum are among the most common developmental abnormality in newborns and cause significant neonatal morbidity and mortality. A key point in cardiac morphogenesis occurs when cells within the endocardial cushions (ECCs), the precursors for the AV valvoseptal complex, delaminate and undergo an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation (EMT). The mesenchymal cells then proliferate and the cushion area elongates to form the AV valves and portions of the AV septae. The signals that initiate region-specific EMT during heart development are unknown. Cilia, known for their role in establishing left-right (LR) …
