Tension And Critical Thinking In Art, Marnie A. Jain Aug 2010

Tension And Critical Thinking In Art, Marnie A. Jain

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This paper is a discussion about the existence, purpose, and use of tension in works of art. It does not take the form of standard papers, but is written as an interview where I am both the interviewer and interviewee. As the interviewee I am an artist and researcher of this topic. As the interviewer, I challenge myself to support my assertions with examples, and I try and catch myself in contradictions, and ask for clarifications. Similar to conversations we have in the classrooms of the Critical and Creative Thinking Graduate Program, the discussion in this paper does not cease …

Managing Corporate Federalism: The Least-Bad Approach To The Shareholder Bylaw Debate, Christopher M. Bruner Aug 2010

Managing Corporate Federalism: The Least-Bad Approach To The Shareholder Bylaw Debate, Christopher M. Bruner

Scholarly Works

Over recent decades, shareholders in public corporations have increasingly sought to augment their own power - and, correlatively, to limit the power of boards - through creative use of corporate bylaws. The bylaws lend themselves to such efforts because enacting, amending, and repealing bylaws are essentially the only corporate governance actions that shareholders can undertake unilaterally. In this Article I examine thecontested nature of bylaws, the fundamental issues of corporate power and purpose that they implicate, and the differing ways in which state and federal lawmakers and regulators may impact the debate regarding thescope of the shareholders' bylaw authority.

Design And Combinatorial Synthesis Approach Of Non-Peptidic Trimeric Small Molecules Mimicking I, I + 4(3), I + 7 Positions Of Alpha-Helices, Mingzhou Zhou

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Protein-protein interactions are key to several biological processes that facilitate signal transduction and many other processes. These interactions are involved in pathways that are critical to many human diseases. Targeting specific protein-protein interactions is a challenging goal because protein-protein interactions are predominately through hydrophobic interactions. Antagonists of the protein-protein interactions need to be perfectly fit into the binding pockets to ensure the activity. The -helical domain of the proteins behaves as the recognition motifs for numerous protein-protein, and protein-nucleic acid interactions. Research has shown that pathways of many diseases contain protein-protein interactions involving -helical domains, e.g. neurological disorders, bacterial infections, …

Evolution Of The Hammerhead Cephalofoil: Shape Change, Space Utilization, And Feeding Biomechanics In Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrnidae), Kyle Reid Mara Aug 2010

Evolution Of The Hammerhead Cephalofoil: Shape Change, Space Utilization, And Feeding Biomechanics In Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrnidae), Kyle Reid Mara

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between form and function is often used to elucidate the biological role of a structure. Hammerhead sharks offer a unique opportunity to study form and function through phylogeny. Because sphyrnid sharks display a range of cranial morphologies this group can be used to address questions about the evolution of cranial design and investigate the effects of changes in head morphology on feeding structures and bite force. Geometric morphometrics, volumetric analyses, morphological dissections, and phylogenetic analyses of the cephalofoil were used to gain insight into changes in cranial design through evolutionary history. External morphometrics and internal volumetric analyses indicated …

Core Promoter Function In Brugia Malayi, Michelle Bailey Aug 2010

Core Promoter Function In Brugia Malayi, Michelle Bailey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies have indicated that the promoters of the human filarial parasite Brugia malayi are unusual in that they do not exhibit the CAAT or TATAA sequences usually found in the core domains of promoters of most eukaryotic organisms. Analysis of the promoters of the ribosomal proteins showed that the region flanking the splice leader (SL) addition site plays an important role in transcription and may function as the core promoter domain in B. malayi. To test the hypothesis that the SL addition domain is the most important essential region of the ribosomal protein promoters, the SL addition site of …

Discrimination Of Human And Non-Human Sources Of Pollution In Gulf Of Mexico Waters By Microbial Source Tracking Methods And The Investigation Of The Influence Of Environmental Factors On Escherichia Coli Survival, Asja Korajkic Aug 2010

Discrimination Of Human And Non-Human Sources Of Pollution In Gulf Of Mexico Waters By Microbial Source Tracking Methods And The Investigation Of The Influence Of Environmental Factors On Escherichia Coli Survival, Asja Korajkic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water quality worldwide is assessed by enumeration of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) (fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and enterococci) intended to act as surrogates for human enteric pathogens. In environmental waters, this predictive relationship is confounded by many possible sources of FIB with varying implications for human health. Many physico-chemical and biological factors influence the fate of enteric pathogens and FIB in aquatic habitats, but are poorly understood, thus limiting our understanding of the usefulness of FIB as fecal pollution indicators.

These studies explored the field application of a “toolbox” approach to microbial source tracking (MST) intended to discriminate between human …

A Born Killer?, Leah Johnson Aug 2010

A Born Killer?, Leah Johnson

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

When constructing an argument the author must consider how he or she will use ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to an audience. In her essay, “A Born Killer?” author Leah Johnson opens with an image of her small puppy and a caption asking, “Does she look dangerous to you?” Does this image, coupled with her introduction, successfully grab the reader’s attention? Which of the three appeals is Johnson employing in this opening? Johnson also uses images in her argument. What is the effect? If the image were not included, how would this change your reading of the introduction? How …

Overfishing: A Global Perspective, Viet H. Nguyen Aug 2010

Overfishing: A Global Perspective, Viet H. Nguyen

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

In “Overfishing: A Global Perspective,” Viet H. Nguyen addresses a pertinent topic that isn’t necessarily at the forefront of American’s concerns despite its significance. What is a food crisis? In informing readers of the factors contributing to this predicament, Nguyen cites a wide variety of sources. Are they clearly introduced and fully explicated? What aspects or elements would you change in order to maximize the information brought in from outside texts? How would you do this? Are there any sources you would eliminate or change?

Because such a large number of outside sources were consulted for this essay, the author …

Breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis (Park.) Fsb.) are used as traditional medicine in treatment of liver diseases. This study aimed to figure out the hepatoprotective effect of breadfruit leaves infusion in carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in male albino rats. The study used 25 male albino rats of Sprague-Dawley strain, which were divided randomly into five groups. Group I (normal control group) and group II (carbon tetrachloride-induced control group) only received 0,5% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) solution. Group III-V received different dose of breadfruit leaves infusion for seven days respectively, which were 13,5 g/kgBW (dose 1), 27 g/kg BW (dose 2) and 54 g/kg …

Trampling The Public Trust, Debra L. Donahue Aug 2010

Trampling The Public Trust, Debra L. Donahue

Faculty Articles

Livestock production is a chief contributor to many significant and intractable environmental problems This Article examines the causal role of livestock especially beef production in global climate change predator control in the western United States and winter elk feeding in Wyoming It argues that ending livestock grazing on western public lands is a cost effective first step for dealing with these problems and is readily achievable under existing law Removing livestock would lead to improved watershed conditions and make reintroduction of predators politically feasible which would promote further recovery of landscapes impacted by native ungulate populations Ending publicland grazing would …

Invasion Of The Zombie Chickens, Jesse Tyler Aug 2010

Invasion Of The Zombie Chickens, Jesse Tyler

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Taking a creative approach to an important issue, Jesse Tyler juggles fact-driven research and personal voice to form a unique argument in “Invasion of the Zombie Chickens.” From the beginning of his essay, Tyler draws in his reader with an articulate description not usually associated with research-based essays. Yet Tyler’s introduction is not merely an amusing “hook”; instead, it is grounded with a strong, arguable thesis, paving the way for the rest of his essay. Tyler’s balance of humor and thorough research provides an entertaining background through which to explore the issue of “spent hens” in Petaluma. Not relying on …

Bonsai: A Way Of Living, Amy Nguyen Aug 2010

Bonsai: A Way Of Living, Amy Nguyen

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Amy Nguyen’s profile “Bonsai: A Way of Living” blends form and content effectively; the tone of the piece is as calming as the subject matter. She achieves this effect by using stylistic techniques: imagery, diction, and even punctuation. For example, notice how the words “harmony,” “flow,” and “energy” precede the image of Nguyen’s father meditating. She later describes her father bending down to work with the Bonsai. She writes, “his stance is like a person playing pool, the same facial expression . . .” Instead of merely stating that her father concentrates on his Bonsai, she uses a simile to show …

Success Of A Gardener, Vanessa Saldana Aug 2010

Success Of A Gardener, Vanessa Saldana

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Vanessa Saldana, in her essay “Success of a Gardener,” contributes her perspective on illegal immigration through an intimate portrait of an illegal immigrant: her father. Although she knows her father well, she seems to take this opportunity to explore an aspect of him she perhaps hasn’t considered in all its complexity. As you can see, Saldana remains fairly objective through the essay, but her in-depth analysis reveals that she learned something about her father—and herself—that she hadn’t realized before taking on the assignment. What is your opinion about immigration? How does Saldana’s essay contribute to the current immigration debate?
