Comparative In Vivo Study Of Gp96 Adjuvanticity In The Frog Xenopus Laevis, Hristina Nedelkovska, Tanya Cruz-Luna, Pamela Mcpherson, Jacques Robert Jan 2010

Comparative In Vivo Study Of Gp96 Adjuvanticity In The Frog Xenopus Laevis, Hristina Nedelkovska, Tanya Cruz-Luna, Pamela Mcpherson, Jacques Robert

Biology

We have developed in the amphibian Xenopus laevis a unique non-mammalian model to study the ability of certain heat shock proteins (hsps) such as gp96 to facilitate cross-presentation of chaperoned antigens and elicit innate and adaptive T cell responses. Xenopus skin graft rejection provides an excellent platform to study the ability of gp96 to elicit classical MHC class Ia (class Ia) restricted T cell responses. Additionally, the Xenopus model system also provides an attractive alternative to mice for exploring the ability of gp96 to generate responses against tumors that have down-regulated their class Ia molecules thereby escaping immune surveillance. Recently, …

Ecological Niche Modeling Of Potential West Nile Virus Vector Mosquito Species In Iowa, Scott R. Larson, John P. Degroote, Lyric C. Bartholomay, Ramanathan Sugumaran Jan 2010

Ecological Niche Modeling Of Potential West Nile Virus Vector Mosquito Species In Iowa, Scott R. Larson, John P. Degroote, Lyric C. Bartholomay, Ramanathan Sugumaran

Faculty Work

Ecological niche modeling (ENM) algorithms, Maximum Entropy Species Distribution Modeling (Maxent) and Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Prediction (GARP), were used to develop models in Iowa for three species of mosquito – two significant, extant West Nile virus (WNV) vectors (Culex pipiens L and Culex tarsalis Coquillett (Diptera: Culicidae)), and the nuisance mosquito, Aedes vexans Meigen (Diptera: Culicidae), a potential WNV bridge vector. Occurrence data for the three mosquito species from a state-wide arbovirus surveillance program were used in combination with climatic and landscape layers. Maxent successfully created more appropriate niche models with greater accuracy than GARP. The three Maxent species’ …

Speaking Ourselves: The Intersections Of Women Educators' Personal And Professional Lives, Leigh M. O'Brien

School of Education

This paper presents findings from interviews conducted with 33 women educators working at varying levels of education and in diverse fields, and who varied in terms of age, ethnicity, race, family structure, geographic location, and sexual orientation.i Semi-structured interviews, building on variants of this question, Does who you are as person influence what you do as an educator and are there ways being an educator influences your life outside of work?, were conducted, tape recorded, and inductively analyzed. The themes uncovered suggest that women educators function as whole persons, aware of multiple intersections between their personal and professional lives. In …

BACKGROUND: The octapeptide Angiotensin II is a key hormone that acts via its receptor AT1R in the brainstem to modulate the blood pressure control circuits and thus plays a central role in the cardiac and respiratory homeostasis. This modulation occurs via activation of a complex network of signaling proteins and transcription factors, leading to changes in levels of key genes and proteins. AT1R initiated activity in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), which regulates blood pressure, has been the subject of extensive molecular analysis. But the adaptive network interactions in the NTS response to AT1R, plausibly related to the development of …

Theses

"Strongest" is a short film, produced in the School of Film and Animation at RIT. It is a science-fiction film noir about a woman, Rose, who is searching for her husband. In the process of searching for him, she uncovers his dark secrets and strange scientific experiments. The film was shot almost exclusively using a greenscreen with backgrounds and other effects being placed in post-production. This manuscript examines the filmmaking process from script writing to shooting to completed film. During the stages of preproduction, production, and post-production many challenges were faced. Some of these challenges were overcome to produce quality …

Computational Studies Of Stereochemical Effects In The Synthesis Of Sugar Mimics, Louis Anthony Lello Jan 2010

Computational Studies Of Stereochemical Effects In The Synthesis Of Sugar Mimics, Louis Anthony Lello

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Density Functional methods are used to model the tandem aza-Cope rearrangement – Mannich cyclization reaction leading to substituted acylpyrrolidines. The ultimate goal is to determine optimum reaction conditions that maximize stereoselectivity, as only one set of stereoisomers is pharmacologically active. Three aspects of the reaction are investigated. First, we determine the relative size of three rotational barriers in the interconversion of two iminium cation stereoisomers that are precursors to the aza-Cope rearrangement. The lowest energy pathway for the interconversion is identified, as well as the relative stability of the two stereoisomers for two different substituents: diphenyl and methyl. Activation barriers …

The Impact Of Microclimate On Branch Colonization By Neotropical Cerambycid Beetles, Christina Lee Jan 2010

The Impact Of Microclimate On Branch Colonization By Neotropical Cerambycid Beetles, Christina Lee

Dissertations and Theses

"Vertical stratification contributes to the great diversity of insects found in tropical rainforests. Due to differences in both biotic and abiotic factors, different strata of the forest provide different habitats for insects. A previous study in French Guiana revealed that wood-boring cerambycid beetles preferentially colonized branches at ground level in the dry season, but shifted to canopy level in the rainy season. The current beetle-rearing study was conducted to confirm the occurrence of this seasonal shift, explore possible causes, and to determine if similar microclimate conditions occurred at ground level in the dry season and the canopy level in the …

Role Of Drosophila Rap/Fzr (Cdh1) In Retinal Axon Targeting And Its Interactions With Loco, Liprin-A And Ras, Marta Gronska

Dissertations and Theses

The development of the wild type Drosophila compound eye involves stereotypical targeting of photoreceptor axons to the specific layers of the optic ganglion, medulla and lamina, in the third instar larvae. To test the hypothesis that ubiquitin ligases play an important role during retinal axon targeting we have examined the patterns of axon targeting in the developing eye of the retina aberrant in pattern (rap/fzr) mutants. Rap/Fzr is a homolog of mammalian Cdh1, an activator of anaphase promoting complex (APC), an E3 ubiquitin ligase. Previous work has shown that Rap/Fzr is required in cell cycle regulation, glia differentiation and pattern …

Exploring Prehistoric Salmon Subsistence In The Willamette Valley Using Zooarchaeological Records And Optimal Foraging Theory, J. Tait Elder Jan 2010

Exploring Prehistoric Salmon Subsistence In The Willamette Valley Using Zooarchaeological Records And Optimal Foraging Theory, J. Tait Elder

Dissertations and Theses

My research examines the prehistoric subsistence of native peoples of the Willamette Valley, Oregon through an analysis of the regional zooarchaeological records, and then modeling regional diet breadth. Through this analysis, I challenge commonly held stereotypes that the indigenous people of the Willamette Valley were strictly root eaters, and the basis for this claim, that salmon were not part of Native subsistence. The results of my research indicate that given the incomplete nature of the ethnohistoric record, very little can be said about expected cultural behaviors, such as salmon consumption, that appear to be absent in the Willamette Valley. In …

The Rocky Path For Private Directors General: Procedure, Politics, And The Uncertain Future Of Eu Antitrust Damages Actions, Marc A. Sittenreich Jan 2010

The Rocky Path For Private Directors General: Procedure, Politics, And The Uncertain Future Of Eu Antitrust Damages Actions, Marc A. Sittenreich

Fordham Law Review

For the better part of the past decade, the European Commission has engaged in a dialogue with European Union (EU) citizens and businesses in an attempt to strengthen an almost nonexistent private competition enforcement system. In the United States, where private antitrust lawsuits are most prevalent, litigation is justified on the grounds of both deterrence and compensation. While the Commission wants to make private damages actions the primary vehicle for the compensation of aggrieved parties, recent political pressure has made EU officials claim that government enforcement will remain the predominant means for the deterrence of EU antitrust violations. Furthermore, many …

Extensions On The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: The Influence Of Biological Factors On Assessments Of Impairment, Rose Mcdermott Jan 2010

Extensions On The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: The Influence Of Biological Factors On Assessments Of Impairment, Rose Mcdermott

Fordham Law Review

Because the framers of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment were so prescient in their creation of this legislation, it behooves subsequent scholars to examine additional potential concerns that would not have entered the debate forty years ago. Huge advances have been made in the area of biological and genetic medical knowledge, and this progress could not have been foreseen at the time the original Amendment was written. Yet in the interim, such information has become much more accessible. It becomes important to raise these questions moving forward because political opponents may take advantage of these new concerns, as they arise, and use …

Representations Of Keypoint-Based Semantic Concept Detection: A Comprehensive Study, Yu-Gang Jiang, Jun Yang, Chong-Wah Ngo Jan 2010

Representations Of Keypoint-Based Semantic Concept Detection: A Comprehensive Study, Yu-Gang Jiang, Jun Yang, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Based on the local keypoints extracted as salient image patches, an image can be described as a "bag-of-visual-words (BoW)" and this representation has appeared promising for object and scene classification. The performance of BoW features in semantic concept detection for large-scale multimedia databases is subject to various representation choices. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study on the representation choices of BoW, including vocabulary size, weighting scheme, stop word removal, feature selection, spatial information, and visual bi-gram. We offer practical insights in how to optimize the performance of BoW by choosing appropriate representation choices. For the weighting scheme, we …
