Post Discharge Nausea And Vomiting In Ambulatory Surgical Patients: Incidence And Management Strategies, Jan Odom Forren Jan 2009

Post Discharge Nausea And Vomiting In Ambulatory Surgical Patients: Incidence And Management Strategies, Jan Odom Forren

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Approximately 65% of all surgeries are conducted in the outpatient surgery setting involving more than 35 million patients. Thirty-five to fifty percent of these outpatients will experience post discharge nausea and vomiting (PDNV), nausea and vomiting that occurs after discharge from the health care facility after surgery. A dearth of literature details the problems associated with nausea and vomiting experienced by patients after discharge home from outpatient surgery.

The purposes of this dissertation were to (1) review the current knowledge in the area of post discharge nausea and vomiting; (2) present results of an integrative review of the research literature …

Eigenvalue Inequalities For A Family Of Spherically Symmetric Riemannian Manifolds, Julie Miker Jan 2009

Eigenvalue Inequalities For A Family Of Spherically Symmetric Riemannian Manifolds, Julie Miker

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis considers two isoperimetric inequalities for the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a family of spherically symmetric Riemannian manifolds. The Payne-Pólya-Weinberger Conjecture (PPW) states that for a bounded domain Ω in Euclidean space Rn, the ratio λ1(Ω)/λ0(Ω) of the first two eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian is bounded by the corresponding eigenvalue ratio for the Dirichlet Laplacian on the ball BΩof equal volume. The Szegö-Weinberger inequality states that for a bounded domain Ω in Euclidean space Rn, the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian μ1(Ω) is maximized on the ball BΩ …

Allowing Trustee Removal For Cause, Sua Sponte, After Notice And A Hearing, Jonathan Grasso Jan 2009

Allowing Trustee Removal For Cause, Sua Sponte, After Notice And A Hearing, Jonathan Grasso

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

The issue of whether a bankruptcy judge can sua sponte remove a trustee has rarely been addressed; however, two courts have recently considered the issue. The Bankruptcy Appellate Panel in Morgan v. Goldman (In re Morgan), 375 B.R. 838 (B.A.P. 8th Cir. 2007) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Walden v. Walker (In re Walker), 515 F.3d 1204 (11th Cir. 2008) both concluded that a bankruptcy judge has the ability to remove a trustee “for cause,” sua sponte, after “notice and a hearing.”

Morgan was the first case to ever deal …

Role Of Thyroid Hormone In The Intestinal Development Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui, Srikanth Singamsetty Jan 2009

Role Of Thyroid Hormone In The Intestinal Development Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui, Srikanth Singamsetty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thyroid hormone (TH) is required for the metamorphosis of the long, coiled tadpole gut in Xenopus laevis into a shorter mature adult gut. Eleutherodactylus coqui, a direct developing frog, lacks a tadpole. Its embryonic gut is a miniature adult form with a mass of yolky endodermal cells attached to the small intestine to provide nutrition. The requirement of TH for the gut development in E. coqui was tested in this study. Inhibition of TH synthesis with methimazole arrested gut development in its embryonic form. T3, the active form of TH, induced gut development. Embryos treated with methimazole failed to utilize …

A Comparative Study Of Larval Gene Expression Between A Paedomorphic And Metamorphic Species Of Ambystomatid Salamander, Meredith A. Boley Jan 2009

A Comparative Study Of Larval Gene Expression Between A Paedomorphic And Metamorphic Species Of Ambystomatid Salamander, Meredith A. Boley

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Ambystoma tigrinum undergoes an obligatory metamorphosis while A. mexicanum fails to metamorphose and exhibits paedomorphosis. While it is clear that salamander paedomorphosis is associated with genetic changes that delay developmental timing, it is not clear when and how these changes manifest during development. It is possible that paedomorphic and metamorphic larvae show equivalent patterns of developmental until late in the larval period, when brain regions become competent to stimulate the release of metamorphic hormones. To test this hypothesis, I compared gene expression patterns between the brains of A. mexicanum and A. t. tigrinum larvae. In support of the developmental equivalence …

Towards Reducing Fungicide Use In The Control Of Dollar Spot (Sclerotinia Homoeocarpa F.T. Bennett) Disease On Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis Stolonifera L.), Kenneth Lee Cropper

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is commonly used on golf course greens and fairways in cool-humid regions but is plagued by numerous fungal diseases, one of which is dollar spot disease (Sclerotinia homoeocarpa F. T. Bennett). Dollar spot occurs frequently throughout the growing season requiring biweekly fungicide applications for complete control. The objective of this study was to investigate methods of reducing the number of fungicide applications needed to maintain dollar spot at acceptable levels through dew removal and potential mechanisms of resistance in bentgrass. In the first study, a combination of mowing three times a week and …

Electrical And Mechanical Properties Of Mwcnt Filled Conductive Adhesives On Lead Free Surface Finished Pcb's., Keerthi Varma Mantena Jan 2009

Electrical And Mechanical Properties Of Mwcnt Filled Conductive Adhesives On Lead Free Surface Finished Pcb's., Keerthi Varma Mantena

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Electrically conductive adhesives (ECA) are an alternative to tin/lead solders for attaching Surface Mount Devices (SMD) in electronic assemblies. ECAs are mixtures of a polymer binder (for adhesion) and conductive filler (for electrical conductivity). They bring more conductivity, higher strength, less weight and longer durability than metal alloys. ECAs can offer numerous advantages such as fewer processing steps, lower processing temperature and fine pitch capability. Multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were used as conductive fillers in this research because of their novel electronic and mechanical properties.

The high aspect ratio of the nanotubes makes it possible to percolate at low …

Mpi Within A Gpu, Bobby Dalton Young Jan 2009

Mpi Within A Gpu, Bobby Dalton Young

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

GPUs offer high-performance floating-point computation at commodity prices, but their usage is hindered by programming models which expose the user to irregularities in the current shared-memory environments and require learning new interfaces and semantics.

This thesis will demonstrate that the message-passing paradigm can be conceptually cleaner than the current data-parallel models for programming GPUs because it can hide the quirks of current GPU shared-memory environments, as well as GPU-specific features, behind a well-established and well-understood interface. This will be shown by demonstrating a proof-of-concept MPI implementation which provides cleaner, simpler code with a reasonable performance cost. This thesis will also …

Design And Analysis Of Nano-Gap Enhanced Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors, Phillip Donald Keathley Jan 2009

Design And Analysis Of Nano-Gap Enhanced Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors, Phillip Donald Keathley

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors are advantageous to other techniques of sensing chemical binding, offering quantitative, real-time, label-free results. Previous work has demonstrated the effectiveness of using dual-mode SPR sensors to differentiate between surface and background effects, making the sensors more robust to dynamic environments. This work demonstrates a technique that improves upon a previously optimized planar film dual-mode SPR sensor’s LOD by introducing a periodic array of subwavelength nano-gaps throughout the plasmon supporting material. First, general figures of merit for a sensor having an arbitrary number of modes are studied. Next, the mode effective index dispersion and magnetic field …

The Prevalence Of Nutritional Issues In African American Woment Living In Low-Income Housing, Jessica Renee Coffie Jan 2009

The Prevalence Of Nutritional Issues In African American Woment Living In Low-Income Housing, Jessica Renee Coffie

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

African Americans have more disease, disability, and early death than whites. The leading causes of death for African American women are heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease. Several reasons for these differences, including racism, poverty, cultural differences, lack of knowledge about the importance of screening or testing to prevent health problems, inability to get to the doctor, or lack of trust in the medical system. Healthy eating habits are less evident among lower class neighborhoods because of the lack of availability and education about healthy foods. Although African Americans have a healthy acceptance of a wider range of …

The Role And Function Of Literacy In Two Homeschooling Families, Kevin Rua

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Homeschooling is an increasingly popular practice, and this raises questions about how it is carried out. One important area for investigation is the literacy practices of homeschooling. Literacy is often seen as a necessary component of formal schooling. This project investigated the role and function of literacy in two homeschooling families. Specifically the research was designed to answer the following questions:

*How is homeschooling both similar to and different from formal schooling?

*What are the literacy practices of homeschooling? What tools are used in these practices? What knowledge and skills are used in these practices? What are the goals of …

Mental Health Care At The Margins: A Critical Ethnography Of Psychological Practice In An Inner City Mental Health Setting, Katy Sampson Jan 2009

Mental Health Care At The Margins: A Critical Ethnography Of Psychological Practice In An Inner City Mental Health Setting, Katy Sampson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within the past several decades, the field of psychology has attempted to improve psychological services for a greater diversity of people. However, despite these attempts, research continues to document a "gap" when it comes to mental health care services for marginalized populations. Various studies have addressed the issue of this "gap" in mental health care; however, most adhere to positivist assumptions regarding sociocultural aspects of experience, understanding culture and identity as immutable qualities existing within individuals, rather than as an interpersonal phenomenon that is negotiated between and among people and institutions. As a result of these assumptions, many past studies …

The Characteristics And Functions Of Humor In Psychotherapy: A Qualitative Study, Joshua Gregson Jan 2009

The Characteristics And Functions Of Humor In Psychotherapy: A Qualitative Study, Joshua Gregson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Literature on humor in psychotherapy has been strongly influenced by a debate on whether therapists should engage in humor with clients. Many authors urge caution and are suspicious of humor's use by therapists. Others argue that humor is helpful in therapy and illustrate its uses through clinical evidence, mainly anecdotes from the author's experience. The debate on humor's admissibility in psychotherapy treats humor as optional, and thereby ignores its centrality in human relating and its inevitability in the therapeutic relationship.

Since humor inevitably arises in psychotherapy, it is important for therapists to know typical manifestations and meanings of humor in …

Public Water Fluoridation, Jessica Fohey Jan 2009

Public Water Fluoridation, Jessica Fohey

Honors Program Theses

This thesis project addresses the issue of public water fluoridation. There is a debate within the United States as to whether or not public water systems should be fluoridated. Because of the large scale potential health impact, it is critical to determine whether or not this practice is in the best interest of the public. This paper provides an extensive review of scientific literature on the effectiveness, safety, and cost effectiveness of public water fluoridation. Following the review of scientific literature, I will present an overview of pseudo-scientific literature which advocates against public water fluoridation that, although often not scientifically …
