Grating Lobe Reduction In Aperiodic Linear Arrays Of Physically Large Antennas, William C. Barott, Paul G. Steffes Dec 2009

Grating Lobe Reduction In Aperiodic Linear Arrays Of Physically Large Antennas, William C. Barott, Paul G. Steffes

Publications

We present performance bounds obtained from the optimization of the sidelobe levels of aperiodic linear arrays. The antennas comprising these arrays are large compared to the distance between neighboring antennas, a case not addressed in previously published work. This optimization is performed in pattern-space and is applicable over a wide range of scan angles. We show that grating lobes can be suppressed even when the elemental antennas are several wavelengths in size, provided that the ratio of the antenna size to the average spacing between the antenna center-points does not exceed 80%.

Theft As “Involuntary Gifting” Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura Bathurst Dec 2009

Theft As “Involuntary Gifting” Among The Tacana Of Northern Bolivia, Laura Bathurst

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

It has been well established in the anthropological literature that reciprocity, in its various cultural forms, is simultaneously produced by and productive of social relationships; it both comments upon social relationships and plays a role in creating them. However, this has generally been demonstrated using positive forms of reciprocity. In this paper I examine how theft, as a form of negative reciprocity, fit with a wider set of positive reciprocal obligations among the Tacana in northeastern Bolivia in 2001-2002. Theft, I argue, was part of a coherent cultural system in which a material basis, social norms, and values and beliefs …

Facing Defacement: Factors Influencing Indigenous Patients In Provider-Patient Communication In Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, Laura L. Burton Dec 2009

Facing Defacement: Factors Influencing Indigenous Patients In Provider-Patient Communication In Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, Laura L. Burton

Communication ETDs

The purpose of this ethnographic research was to explain the factors influencing Achi patients in provider-patient interactions in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. I explored the complex intercultural challenges influencing the interactions between biomedically-trained providers and indigenous patients. Data collection involved participant observation and twenty-four informal field interviews in Guatemala. I utilized thematic analysis to identify and understand the factors influencing Achi patients when interacting with health care providers. Findings reveal that the Achi patients are influenced in provider-patient interactions by the reciprocal interaction among four major factors: environment, beliefs, emotional effect, and experiences. In addition, subthemes were identified for each of …

What Do Healthcare Providers Think Of Patients Who Use The Internet?: An Exploratory Study, Matt Willis Dec 2009

What Do Healthcare Providers Think Of Patients Who Use The Internet?: An Exploratory Study, Matt Willis

Communication ETDs

The Internet is a technology that is influencing multiple human factors (i.e. cognitive and social). Adults who seek information on the Internet about their health conditions are becoming more common. Providers have been wary of patient information searches, fearing that, at worst, conflicting information may provoke confrontation and doubt and, at best, the information is trivial or already well known to the provider. For this exploratory study a survey was conducted that investigates trends in healthcare provider information technology use and information seeking opinions. This survey was followed by a highly structured interview of n=21 providers. The researcher shows two …

A Bright Idea From The Black Canyon: Federal Judicial Review Of Reserved Water Right Settlements, Reed D. Benson Dec 2009

A Bright Idea From The Black Canyon: Federal Judicial Review Of Reserved Water Right Settlements, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

Under the reserved water rights doctrine, lands the federal government has designated for a particular purpose have rights to sufficient water to fulfill that purpose. Reserved water rights are also known as Winters rights after the doctrine's foundational case, in which the United States Supreme Court held that Congress must have intended to reserve sufficient water to irrigate an Indian reservation although the treaty establishing that reservation said nothing about water.

Hybridization In Diabrotica Barberi Smith And Lawrence And Diabrotica Longicornis (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): Biology, Behavior, Field Introgression, And A Reevaluation Of Taxonomic Status, Laura A. Campbell

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Diabrotica barberi Smith and Lawrence and D. longicornis (Say) are currently recognized as closely related chrysomelid species. Morphological and genetic data support that the two species are sister taxa, and hybridization has been proposed to occur. The objectives of this work were to: 1) assess life history parameters of both taxa and hybrids, 2) compare mating behavior, pheromone response, and spermatophore transfer of both taxa and hybrids, and 3) examine genetic and morphological data for evidence of introgression. Using lab-reared individuals, fitness parameters and potential for population growth were assessed. D. barberi and D. longicornis differed in longevity and fecundity. …

Online And Face-To-Face Classes: A Comparative Analysis Of Teaching Presence And Instructor Satisfaction, David T. Bentz Dec 2009

Online And Face-To-Face Classes: A Comparative Analysis Of Teaching Presence And Instructor Satisfaction, David T. Bentz

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Teaching presence is one of three components of the Community of Inquiry Model proposed by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000). This study examined teaching presence, as measured by the instructional design and organization, and directed facilitation (Shea, Li, Swan, and Pickett, 2005), in a large undergraduate science course, contrasting two modes of lecture delivery, face-to-face and online video. Confirmatory factor analysis validated the teaching presence instrument, producing factor loadings similar to Shea et al.'s for both online and face-to-face delivery. Analysis of the relationship between instructor satisfaction and teaching presence (instructional design and organization, and directed facilitation) produced a significant …

Explicit And Exact Solutions With Multiple Arbitrary Analytic Functions Of Jimbo–Miwa Equation, Sheng Zhang, Ying-Na Sun, Jin-Mei Ba, Ling Dong

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, a generalized F-expansion method is used to construct exact solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional Jimbo–Miwa equation. As a result, many new and more general exact solutions are obtained including single and combined non-degenerate Jacobi elliptic function solutions, hyperbolic function solutions and trigonometric function solutions, each of which contains six arbitrary analytic functions. It is shown that with the aid of symbolic computation the generalized F-expansion method may provide a straightforward and effective mathematical tool for solving nonlinear partial differential equations.

Optimal Filtering Of An Advertising Production System With Deteriorating Items, Lakhdar Aggoun, Ali Benmerzouga, Lotfi Tadj Dec 2009

Optimal Filtering Of An Advertising Production System With Deteriorating Items, Lakhdar Aggoun, Ali Benmerzouga, Lotfi Tadj

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we consider an integrated stochastic advertising-production system in the case of a duopoly. Two firms spend certain amounts to advertise some product. The expenses processes evolve according to the jumps of two homogeneous, finite-state Markov chains. We assume that the items in stock may be subject to deterioration and the deterioration parameter is assumed to be random.

Similarity Solutions For A Steady Mhd Falkner-Skan Flow And Heat Transfer Over A Wedge Considering The Effects Of Variable Viscosity And Thermal Conductivity, M. A. Seddeek, A. A. Afify, A. M. Al-Hanaya

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

An analysis is carried out to study the Falkner–Skan flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, electrically conducting fluid over a wedge in the presence of variable viscosity and thermal conductivity effects. The similarity solutions are obtained using scaling group of transformations. Furthermore the similarity equations are solved numerically by employing Kellr-Box method. Numerical results of the local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number as well as the velocity and the temperature profiles are presented for different physical parameters.

Remarks On The Stability Of Some Size-Structured Population Models Vi: The Case When The Death Rate Depends On Juveniles Only And The Growth Rate Depends On Size Only And The Case When Both Rates Depend On Size Only, M. El-Doma

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We continue our study of size-structured population dynamics models when the population is divided into adults and juveniles, started in El-Doma (to appear 1) and continued in El-Doma (to appear 2). We concentrate our efforts in two special cases, the first is when the death rate depends on juveniles only and the growth rate depends on size only, and, the second is when both the death rate and the growth rate depend on size only. In both special cases we assume that the maximum size for an individual in the population is infinite. We identify three demographic parameters and show …

On A-Ary Subdivision For Curve Design Iii. 2m-Point And (2m + 1)-Point Interpolatory Schemes, Jian-Ao Lian

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we investigate both the 2m-point a-ary for any a ≥ 2 and (2m + 1)-point a-ary for any odd a ≥ 3 interpolatory subdivision schemes for curve design. These schemes include the extended family of the classical 4- and 6-point interpolatory a-ary schemes and the family of the 3- and 5-point a-ary interpolatory schemes, both having been established in our previous papers (Lian [9]) and (Lian [10]).

Water Uptake Threshold Of Rabbiteye (Vaccinium Ashei) Blueberries And Its Influence On Fruit Splitting, Donna A. Marshall-Shaw, James M. Spiers, Kenneth J. Curry Dec 2009

Water Uptake Threshold Of Rabbiteye (Vaccinium Ashei) Blueberries And Its Influence On Fruit Splitting, Donna A. Marshall-Shaw, James M. Spiers, Kenneth J. Curry

Faculty Publications

Split-resistant and split-susceptible rabbiteye blueberry fruit were evaluated at all stages of development to determine ''water uptake thresholds'' by soaking in distilled water. Weight increase after soaking was measured, and percent weight gain was calculated to take into consideration the weight increase of the fruit from development. The ratio of percent increase in volume to weight increase resulting from water uptake was calculated. Ratios of percent water uptake to weight increase between splitsusceptible 'Tifblue' and split-resistant 'Premier' blueberries were found to be similar. The split-susceptible 'Tifblue' had a 1.6 g/50 fruit increase with a 1.7% water uptake and a ratio …

Invisible Children And The Cyberactivist Spectator, Shayne Pepper Dec 2009

Invisible Children And The Cyberactivist Spectator, Shayne Pepper

Communication, Media and Theatre Faculty Publications

This essay combines textual analysis of the Invisible Children documentary along with an examination of the ways in which the Invisible Children movement has utilized network technologies to spread awareness, raise money, and enlist individuals to join in this cause. Drawing upon previous studies of similar social movements, I will consider the Invisible Children project as a particularly unique example of “cyberactivism” in the way that it utilizes networked technologies (social networking sites in particular) and, by centering this movement on the documentary, represents a new type of cultural logic that Henry Jenkins’ calls “convergence culture.” Having positioned the Invisible …

Implementation Of Erosion Control Warranty Specification, Bob G. Mccullouch, Kok Kuan Ng Dec 2009

Implementation Of Erosion Control Warranty Specification, Bob G. Mccullouch, Kok Kuan Ng

JTRP Technical Reports

One of the main issues in a warranty specification for erosion control items is how to evaluate performance objectively. This project developed a methodology that uses digital images to measure compliance with defined vegetation cover requirements. It is designed essentially for areas where vegetation (grass) is selected as the erosion control measure. The research was a technical approach to examine the feasibility of using digital photographic analysis. It does not address all issues related to field conditions and as such would require review by interested parties to be complete. For example, how often should sample pictures to taken. Should a …

A Fast Nir Spectrometer For Examining Explosive Events: Emission Of Petn Based Explosives And H2O Absorption Method Feasibility, Scott Piecuch Dec 2009

A Fast Nir Spectrometer For Examining Explosive Events: Emission Of Petn Based Explosives And H2O Absorption Method Feasibility, Scott Piecuch

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The chemical dynamics and decomposition pathways of explosive materials are not entirely known. Measurements of chemical transients during explosive events can lead to enhanced knowledge of the detailed chemistry and eventually control of the end products; however, these measurements are often difficult to obtain due to fast time scales and harsh environments. Optical diagnostics present fast-response, minimally invasive methods for resolving properties in detonation environments and previous fast spectroscopic measurements have been recorded in the ultra-violet and visible regions. This work extends the range of such measurements to the near-infrared (NIR) through the development of a fiber-coupled NIR spectrometer utilizing …
