Myth And History In The Poetry Of Osundare, Christopher Anyokwu Dec 2009

Myth And History In The Poetry Of Osundare, Christopher Anyokwu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Myth and History in the Poetry of Osundare" Christopher Anyokwu examines the interrelation of myth and history from an African perspective. Anyokwu analyzes the poetry of one of Africa's most prolific and decorated contemporary poets, Niyi Osundare. Osundare is a third-generation Nigerian poet whose work is based on Yoruba oral tradition and informed by Marxist ideology. Osundare's poetry demonstrates the so-called "return-to-roots" neo-traditionalist ethos in modern African writing. Osundare's attitude to myth, ritual, and other African animist categories is intriguingly complex, ambivalent, and giving rise to charges of ideological irresolution and culturo-epistemic bifurcation. As a champion of …

Dietary Response Of Sympatric Deer To Fire Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Liver Tissue, W.D. Walter, T. J. Zimmerman, D. M. Leslie Jr., J. A. Jenks Dec 2009

Dietary Response Of Sympatric Deer To Fire Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Liver Tissue, W.D. Walter, T. J. Zimmerman, D. M. Leslie Jr., J. A. Jenks

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes in biological samples from large herbivores identify photosynthetic pathways (C3 vs. C4 ) of plants they consumed and can elucidate potential nutritional characteristics of dietary selection. Because large herbivores consume a diversity of forage types, δ13C and δ15N in their tissue can index ingested and assimilated diets through time. We assessed δ13C and δ15N in metabolically active liver tissue of sympatric mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) to identify dietary disparity resulting from use of burned and unburned areas in a largely forested landscape. Interspecific variation in dietary disparity of deer …

Nesting Ecology Of Greater Sage-Grouse Centrocercus Urophasianus At The Eastern Edge Of Their Historic Distribution, Katie M. Herman-Brunson, Kent C. Jensen, Nicholas W. Kaczor, Christopher C. Swanson, Mark A. Rumble, Robert W. Klaver

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Greater sage-grouse Centrocercus urophasianus populations in North Dakota declined approximately 67% between 1965 and 2003, and the species is listed as a Priority Level 1 Species of Special Concern by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. The habitat and ecology of the species at the eastern edge of its historical range is largely unknown. We investigated nest site selection by greater sage-grouse and nest survival in North Dakota during 2005 - 2006. Sage-grouse selected nest sites in sagebrush Artemisia spp. with more total vegetative cover, greater sagebrush density, and greater 1-m visual obstruction from the nest than at random …

On The Many Flavors Of Capitalism Or Reflections On Schumpeter's Ghost, John Henry Schlegel Dec 2009

On The Many Flavors Of Capitalism Or Reflections On Schumpeter's Ghost, John Henry Schlegel

Journal Articles

Most legal scholars treat capitalism as a genus with one species. The appearance of several books that argue to the contrary suggests that it is sensible to revisit this assumption. Discussion begins by considering the constructed nature of markets, the importance of market systems, and the role of financings as the factor distinguishing capitalism from other forms of a market economy. Thereafter, four articulations of the varieties of capitalism are reviewed: the classic Marxist one, one by a political economist, another by a pair of comparative political scientists, and third by a trio of economists. This review leads to a …

Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Presenting As Anterior Wall Stemi In An Elderly Woman, Muhammad Asim Shabbir, Muhammad Hamza Saad Shaukat, Lance Sullenberge, Mikhail Torosof Dec 2009

Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Presenting As Anterior Wall Stemi In An Elderly Woman, Muhammad Asim Shabbir, Muhammad Hamza Saad Shaukat, Lance Sullenberge, Mikhail Torosof

Section of Internal Medicine

A 77-year-old woman without traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) underwent coronary CT-angiography for evaluation of palpitations after negative Holter monitoring and non-diagnostic ECG exercise stress test. Coronary artery calcium score was reported zero; 1 day later, she was admitted with anterior-wall ST elevation myocardial infarction. Acute left anterior descending artery thrombus was treated with mechanical thrombectomy and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). Interestingly, the coronary arteries were angiographically normal. During hospitalisation, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was noted followed by initiation of anticoagulation. Echocardiogram did not show thrombus or atrial shunt. Cardioversion with Sotalol was successful. Myocardial infraction was most …

Effect Of Donor Ethnicity On Kidney Survival In Different Recipient Pairs: An Analysis Of The Optn/Unos Database., C O. Callender, W S. Cherikh, P Traverso, A Hernandez, Tolulope A. Oyetunji, D Chang

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Previous multivariate analysis performed between April 1, 1994, and December 31, 2000 from the Organ Procurement Transplant Network/United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS) database has shown that kidneys from black donors were associated with lower graft survival. We compared graft and patient survival of different kidney donor-to-recipient ethnic combinations to see if this result still holds on a recent cohort of US kidney transplants.

METHODS: We included 72,495 recipients of deceased and living donor kidney alone transplants from 2001 to 2005. A multivariate Cox regression method was used to analyze the effect of donor-recipient ethnicity on graft and patient …

This tool utilizes existing automated concept generation algorithms to generate the design concepts. It extracts …

Risk Matrix Input Data Biases, Eric D. Smith, William T. Siefert, David Drain Dec 2009

Risk Matrix Input Data Biases, Eric D. Smith, William T. Siefert, David Drain

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Risk matrices used in industry characterize particular risks in terms of the likelihood of occurrence, and the consequence of the actualized risk. Human cognitive bias research led by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky exposed systematic translations of objective probability and value as judged by human subjects. Applying these translations to the risk matrix allows the formation of statistical hypotheses of risk point placement biases. Industry-generated risk matrix data reveals evidence of biases in the judgment of likelihood and consequence-principally, likelihood centering, a systematic increase in consequence, and a diagonal bias. Statistical analyses are conducted with linear regression, normal distribution fitting, …

Age Comparisons Of Bone Density And Geometry In Men, Vanessa D. Sherk, Murat Karabulut, Michael G. Bemben, Debra A. Bemben

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications

Objectives: The purposes of this study were to examine tibia bone density and geometry in young and middle aged men, and to explore relationships between pQCT- and DXA-derived body composition variables.

Methods: Healthy males (18-30 years old, n=31; 50-64 years old, n=37) had their total body areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and body composition measured with Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Volumetric bone characteristics, muscle cross-sectional area (MCSA) and fat cross-sectional area (FCSA) of the leg were measured with peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT).

Results: Young men were significantly (p<0.05) lighter and had less fat mass than older men. Total volumetric BMD (vBMD) at 66% of the tibia length was significantly lower (p<0.05) in older men. Bone-free lean body mass values were useful predictors of total and cortical area and content (R(2)=0.338-0.467). MCSA was more predictive of leg BFLBM than total body BFLBM, and those relationships were stronger in older men.

Conclusions: Differences in tibial bone area and density existed between …

Dietary Supplements And Structure-Function Claims: The Dysfunctional Structure Of Current Regulation, Matthew W. Lindsey Dec 2009

Dietary Supplements And Structure-Function Claims: The Dysfunctional Structure Of Current Regulation, Matthew W. Lindsey

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Twenty percent of Americans report using one of the more than thirty thousand dietary supplement products generated by an estimated one thousand manufacturers, contributing to an industry exceeding twenty billion dollars globally. Fueled by increasing public interest in individual health, dietary supplement manufacturers in the United States (U.S.) continue to exploit the weaknesses in the way the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates these products. Dietary supplement manufacturers perpetuate the perceived safety of supplements through the advertisement of structure-function claims, which many consumers mistakenly assume to be the same as FDA-regulated health claims.

Purdue Energetics Research Center Articles

Heterogeneous gasless reactive systems, including high-energy density metal-nonmetal compositions, have seen increasing study due to their various applications. However, owing to their high reaction temperature, short reaction time, and small scale of heterogeneity, investigation of their reaction mechanisms and kinetics is very difficult. In this study, microstructural changes and the kinetics of product layer growth in the W-Si system was investigated using a high-speed x-ray phase-contrast imaging technique. Using the Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory, this method allowed direct imaging of irreversible reactions in the W-Si reactive system at frame rates up to 36 000 frames per second …

A Parallel Direct Solver For The Simulation Of Large-Scale Power/Ground Networks, Stephen Cauley, Venkataramanan Balakrishnan, Cheng-Kok Koh

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We present an algorithm for the fast and accurate simulation of power/ground mesh structures. Our method is a direct (non-iterative) approach for simulation based upon a parallel matrix inversion algorithm. Through the use of additional computational resources, this distributed computing technique facilitates the simulation of large-scale power/ground networks. In addition, the new dimension of flexibility provided by our algorithm allows for a more accurate analysis of power/ground mesh structures using RLC interconnect models. Specifically, we offer a method that employs a sparse approximate inverse technique to consider more reluctance coupling terms for increased accuracy of simulation. The inclusion of additional …

Camouflaging Timing Channels In Web Traffic, Sarah H. Sellke, Chih-Chun Wang, Saurabh Bagchi, Ness B. Shroff Dec 2009

Camouflaging Timing Channels In Web Traffic, Sarah H. Sellke, Chih-Chun Wang, Saurabh Bagchi, Ness B. Shroff

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Web traffic accounts for more than half of Internet traffic today. Camouflaging covert timing channels in Web traffic would be advantageous for concealment. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of disguising network covert timing channels as HTTP traffic to avoid detection. Extensive research has shown that Internet traffic, including HTTP traffic, exhibits self-similarity and long range persistence. Existing covert timing channels that mimic i.i.d. legitimate traffic cannot imitate HTTP traffic because these covert traffic patterns are not long range dependent. The goal of this work is to design a covert timing channel that can be camouflaged as HTTP traffic. …

Ccack: Efficient Network Coding Based Opportunistic Routing Through Cumulative Coded Acknowledgments, Dimitrios Koutsonikolas, Chih-Chun Wang, Y. Charlie Hu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The use of random linear network coding (NC) has significantly simplified the design of opportunistic routing (OR) protocols by removing the need of coordination among forwarding nodes for avoiding duplicate transmissions. However, NC-based OR protocols face a new challenge: How many coded packets should each forwarder transmit? To avoid the overhead of feedback exchange, most practical existing NC-based OR protocols compute offline the expected number of transmissions for each forwarder using heuristics based on periodic measurements of the average link loss rates and the ETX metric. Although attractive due to their minimal coordination overhead, these approaches may suffer significant performance …
