Text Format, Text Comprehension, And Related Reader Variables, Jodi L. Nichols Dec 2009

Text Format, Text Comprehension, And Related Reader Variables, Jodi L. Nichols

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This investigation explored relationships between format of text (electronic or print-based) and reading comprehension of adolescent readers. Also in question were potential influences on comprehension from related measures including academic placement of participants, gender, prior knowledge of the content, and overall reading ability. Influences were measured through an unaided text retell and a constructed-response assessment with traditional questioning. Participants' reading preferences and self-reported reading behaviors were also explored.;Findings from regression analyses revealed that format of the text was not a significant predictor of reading comprehension for seventh grade students, despite participants' self-reported preference to reading electronic text. Conversely, participants' academic …

The Development, Implementation And Evaluation Of A System Based Physical Activity Promotion Program In A Free, Rural, Primary Care Clinic, Martha E. Summers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Background. Despite the consequences of physical inactivity, it is under recognized and not addressed consistently in primary care. The Healthy People 2010 recommendations are that adults should engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most, preferably all, days of the week. Clinical practice guidelines advise that primary care practitioners take the opportunity whenever possible to advise, discuss, negotiate, or encourage physical activity in inactive adults. Objective. The primary objective was to identify beliefs about physical activity that act as barriers among providers and to educate them about the current recommendations for physical activity. An additional objective …

A Web-Based System For Course Instruction And Student Advising, Praveen Danda Dec 2009

A Web-Based System For Course Instruction And Student Advising, Praveen Danda

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Academic advising plays an important role in student success in college, freshman students who join the universities with certain goals may face difficulties in course selection, whom to contact, and where to get course information. Considering this, each student in the university is assigned an advisor from his/her department who can address student's problems during their academic years in the college. The advisors spend considerable amount of time in analyzing student performance during the semester by viewing the student's grades and transcripts. The rise in student enrollment in engineering majors at West Virginia University is making it increasingly difficult for …

Adsorptive Removal Of Nitrogen From Coal-Based Needle Coke Feedstocks Using Activated Carbon, Sreeja Madala Dec 2009

Adsorptive Removal Of Nitrogen From Coal-Based Needle Coke Feedstocks Using Activated Carbon, Sreeja Madala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A low percentage of nitrogen in needle coke feedstocks is desired for the reduction of puffing during the process of graphitization of needle coke. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the removal of nitrogen species from a coal-based needle coke feedstock, when treated with both commercial activated carbon, Nuchar SA 20 and "coal-derived" activated carbon, WVUAC 900-15. Koppers coal tar distillate (CTD), which has 1.1% wt starting nitrogen content, is selected as the needle coke feedstock. A series of experiments was performed to establish a standard procedure for the removal of nitrogen species. Using the established experimental …

Improved Inter-Rater Reliability For Sah Ct Grading Scales Through Application Of A Formal Definition Of Clot Thickness, William Mcbride, Md, Valerie Dechant, Md, Michael Moussouttas, Md Dec 2009

Improved Inter-Rater Reliability For Sah Ct Grading Scales Through Application Of A Formal Definition Of Clot Thickness, William Mcbride, Md, Valerie Dechant, Md, Michael Moussouttas, Md

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Various scales have been devised for the prediction of vasospasm following aneurysmal rupture.

Especially prominent in these scales is their reliance upon a subjective assessment of clot thickness which introduces variability in grading across raters.

The current study seeks to compare the inter-rater reliability of the traditional Fisher and newer "Frontera" scale (Modified Fisher) when a rigid definition of thick clot is employed.

Health Impacts Of Traffic Related Air Pollution, Amit U. Raysoni, Wen-Wahi Li Dec 2009

Health Impacts Of Traffic Related Air Pollution, Amit U. Raysoni, Wen-Wahi Li

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Ambient air pollution can be a serious cause of concern for any community. Anthropogenic ambient air pollutants can emanate from industries, traffic, geological sources and domestic heating and cooking. However, studies have shown that traffic related air pollution can have far more detrimental health effects than non-combustion sources. These adverse health effects are most profound in sensitive populations like the elderly and young children. The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes more than 300 million deaths every year to ambient air pollution. The WHO’s Air Quality Guidelines (AQG) and the United States Environment Protection Agency’s (USEPA) National Ambient Air Quality Standards …

This paper relates individuals’ characteristics to the probability of possessing firearms: a) inside the home; b) outside the home; and c) inside and outside the home. Extending the literature on the demand for firearms whose focus is on the first trait, we collected survey data on 2,045 random individuals of Brasília, Brazil, in 2002. The multinominal logit model yields several new results. First, while we do find that a person’s educational level negatively affects the likelihood that an individual will use arms only outside his or her home, education does not affect the probability of an individual possessing a gun …

China’S Exports And The Oil Price, João Ricardo Faria, Andre V. Mollick, Pedro H. Albuquerque, Miguel A. Leon-Ledesma Dec 2009

China’S Exports And The Oil Price, João Ricardo Faria, Andre V. Mollick, Pedro H. Albuquerque, Miguel A. Leon-Ledesma

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

The increase in oil prices in recent years has occurred concurrently with a rapid expansion of Chinese exports in the world markets, despite China being an oil importing country. In this paper we develop a theoretical model that explains the positive correlation between Chinese exports and the oil price. The model shows that Chinese growth can lead to an increase in oil prices that has a stronger impact on its export competitors. This is due to the large labor force surplus of China. We then examine this hypothesis by estimating a reduced form equation for Chinese exports using Rodrik (2006)’s …

A New Look At The Original Meaning Of The Diversity Clause, Mark Moller Dec 2009

A New Look At The Original Meaning Of The Diversity Clause, Mark Moller

College of Law Faculty

Must a federal court obtain the power to bind a party before her citizenship becomes relevant to diversity jurisdiction under Article III? For a long time conventional wisdom has assumed the answer is "no": Article III allows Congress to authorize diversity jurisdiction based on the citizenship of persons beyond a court's power to bind at the time jurisdiction is tested. Congress, in turn, has acted on this assumption. Key provisions of the most ambitious, and controversial, expansion of diversity jurisdiction in the last decade, the 2005 Class Action Fairness Act (CAFA), hinge diversity jurisdiction on the citizenship of persons conventionally …

"Once Victim, Always Victim": Compensated Individuals Under The Amended Sentencing Guidelines On Fraud, Jacqueline Harrington Dec 2009

"Once Victim, Always Victim": Compensated Individuals Under The Amended Sentencing Guidelines On Fraud, Jacqueline Harrington

Michigan Law Review

Until recently, courts disagreed over whether individuals who were compensated by a third party such as a bank or insurance company ought to count as victims for purposes of the multiple-victim sentencing enhancement in the Federal Sentencing Guidelines on Fraud. The most recent Amendments to the Guidelines resolve this split, permitting compensated individuals to be counted as victims where their identity was used in the commission of the fraud. However, the new Guidelines do not resolve a separate split, likely to become more divisive under the new Guidelines, over whether both compensated individuals and their compensators can simultaneously be treated …

New Limits On The Use Of Race In Public School Student Assignment Plans: Implications Of The Supreme Court's Decision In Parents Involved In Community Schools V. Seattle School District No. 1, 127 S. Ct. 2738 (2007), Rowan E. Themer Dec 2009

New Limits On The Use Of Race In Public School Student Assignment Plans: Implications Of The Supreme Court's Decision In Parents Involved In Community Schools V. Seattle School District No. 1, 127 S. Ct. 2738 (2007), Rowan E. Themer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In many school districts throughout the nation, "white flight" has caused urban centers to have disproportionately high percentages of minority residents.  One way school officials have attempted to battle the growing problem of resegregation is the use of race-conscious student assignment plans designed to create a diverse student body.  In Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1, the Supreme Court was asked to decide whether school districts were permitted to classify students based upon race in order to achieve diversity.  The Court struck down the race-conscious assignment plans of two districts, prompting questions as to whether …

A Tri-Disciplinary Analysis Of Religion, Alicia Wallace

Social Sciences

This paper analyzes religion using a multi-disciplinary approach. Studying the Social Sciences exposes one to an opportunity not just to learn a single discipline, but three, and this unique learning experience can teach one to look at the world’s phenomena with a multi-perspective view. Using a tri-disciplinary approach when exploring topics can broaden ones outlook on how there are many ways to explore and investigate a topic in greater detail. By using Anthropological, Sociological and Geographical theoretical perspectives one can understand a topic more fully by using a multi-perspective approach when exploring this diverse world culturally, socially and physically.

Educational Inequity, Erica Jade Lyons Dec 2009

Educational Inequity, Erica Jade Lyons

Social Sciences

Our society’s public school education system is reproducing, if not enhancing, social stratification and inequality. The United States spends less on the schools that have the largest population of low-income and minority children than on schools with children from the more affluent families, typically White children. We are only further widening the gap between rich and poor when we give the children who come from the bottom end of class structure and give them even less when they leave their homes to come to class. In the United States, we spend approximately $900 less per year on each student from …

The Driving Forces And Resultant Effects Of Global Food Crises: Development Reconsidered In A Time Of Need, Quinn Lewis Dec 2009

The Driving Forces And Resultant Effects Of Global Food Crises: Development Reconsidered In A Time Of Need, Quinn Lewis

Social Sciences

A number of factors led up to the global food crisis of 2008, culminating in the latest spike in worldwide hunger levels. Such a crisis needs to be understood from a structural perspective; relevant information must be taken into account to design adequate responses, and certain mechanisms need to be put in place to bolster the most vulnerable groups from the terrible scourge of hunger. This paper examines the latest global food crisis, looking at the problem from a number of angles: supply-and-demand forces, socio-economic factors, and the effects of international trade policies on global hunger levels. Hunger is a …

Lessons Learned In Public Image Management: An Examination Of Public Relations Strategies Employed By Public Agencies During Hurricane Katrina, Cassandra Keyse Dec 2009

Lessons Learned In Public Image Management: An Examination Of Public Relations Strategies Employed By Public Agencies During Hurricane Katrina, Cassandra Keyse

Journalism

When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, many were left without shelter and in need of immediate federal assistance. This presented many public organizations with a crisis that they weren't properly prepared to respond to, both in the literal sense and in their public image management preparation. The United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Response Agency were two of these agencies that received criticism from the public and in the press about their lack of a timely response to the disaster. A content analysis of a local newspaper from New Orleans and …

Methods For Retaining And Monetizing Local Audiences Of An Online-Only News Organization, Lauren Rabaino Dec 2009

Methods For Retaining And Monetizing Local Audiences Of An Online-Only News Organization, Lauren Rabaino

Journalism

Newspapers are at a crossroads in their existence. Traditionally, the printed giants were able to hold monopolies in their respective municipalities because the barrier to entry for printing was high and the operating costs were expensive. A study published in 1978 – a decade before the Internet came to fruition – reported that local newspaper monopolies existed in more than 97 percent of U.S. cities . But with the Web, that dynamic has vastly shifted. Widely accessible and affordable Web platforms eliminate both the barrier to entry and operating costs required to publish to a mass audience. As a result, …
