Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Access To Care Among Children: How Does Medicaid Do In Closing The Gaps?, Marsha Lillie-Blanton, Julia Paradise, Megan Thomas, Paul D. Jacobs, Bianca Dijulio

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

While Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) have become increasingly important sources of health coverage for low-income children in all racial and ethnic groups, the program plays an especially large role for children of color, who are more likely than white children to be low-income. In 2007, Medicaid and CHIP covered nearly one in five white children, but roughly two in five African American and Hispanic children.

As policymakers engaged in health reform consider the merits of public and private approaches to expanding coverage, this report provides an assessment of Medicaid's relative impact on racial and ethnic disparities …

A Precise Analysis Of A Class E Amplifier, Brett Klehn Dec 2009

A Precise Analysis Of A Class E Amplifier, Brett Klehn

Theses

An analytical approach to the design and simulation of a Class-E power amplifier under typical high frequency switching conditions is presented. The analysis will optimize the loading network at the output for transistors with an exponential transition current, while accounting for harmonics injected into the circuit from the choke inductor and a non-infinite output Q. Two methods have been successfully implemented to simulate the class-E amplifier waveforms, optimize the required circuit components, and calculate amplifier performances such as efficiency and total harmonic distortion (THD). The first optimizes the circuit parameters while considering finite choke inductances, drain current fall time, and …

Facebook Interactions And Writing Skills Of Spanish Language Students, Windy Gonzalez Roberts

Spanish Publications

Facebook (www.facebook.com) is an online social-networking site used by many high school and college students today in their personal lives. This thesis reports on an exploratory study which investigated the possible increase in writing skills of Spanish language students from incorporating a Facebook component into an otherwise standard college course. Fourth semester college Spanish students were asked to complete weekly writing assignments in Facebook throughout the semester. Regular writing practice on varied topics in the familiar and informal environment of Facebook was expected to increase the language production and the writing skill of the students. The study had several components. …

USDA Systematic Entomology Laboratory

Lophodiplosis trifida Gagné, an Australian gall midge on paperbark, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Myrtaceae), is a recent release in southern Florida for the biological control of that host. The larval stage is described for the first time and compared to that of other Lophodiplosis species. Photos of galls and illustrations of larvae are provided. Second and third instars of L. trifida are unusual among Cecidomyiidae for the lack of setae on most papillae.

Toward A Whole Language Curriculum For Teaching Reading In Spanish (Project), Lisa Marie Domke Dec 2009

Toward A Whole Language Curriculum For Teaching Reading In Spanish (Project), Lisa Marie Domke

Award Winners

Statistics from the United States Department of Education reveal that over half of the students in the United States lack foreign language proficiency. While immersion programs at the elementary level are the most successful model in helping students become proficient in a foreign language, they must have a clearly articulated curriculum. West Ottawa Public Schools recently began a Spanish immersion program, but lacks a Spanish reading curriculum. An evaluation of research reveals that the curriculum created for West Ottawa must capitalize on the fact that Spanish naturally divides into syllables and is an orthographically regular language. However, reading in Spanish …

Index Of Problematic Online Experiences: Item Characteristics And Correlation With Negative Symptomatology, Kimberly J. Mitchell, Chiara Sabina, David Finkelhor, Melissa Wells

Psychology

This exploratory study aimed to develop and test a quick, easily administered instrument, the Index of Problematic Online Experiences (I-POE). The goal of the I-POE extends beyond assessing for Internet overuse to broadly assess problematic Internet use across several domains and activities. Data was collected from 563 college students from a Northern New England university using an online survey methodology. Results indicated the I-POE has adequate construct validity and is highly correlated with a variety of relevant constructs: depression, anger=irritability, tension-reduction behavior, sexual concerns, and dysfunctional sexual behavior as measured by the Trauma Symptom Inventory; as well as amount of …

Are Periodic Solar Wind Number Density Structures Formed In The Solar Corona?, N. M. Viall, Harlan E. Spence, J. Kasper

Physics & Astronomy

[1] We present an analysis of the alpha to proton solar wind abundance ratio (AHe) during a period characterized by significant large size scale density fluctuations, focusing on an event in which the proton and alpha enhancements are anti-correlated. In a recent study using 11 years (1995–2005) of solar wind observations from the Wind spacecraft, N. M. Viall et al. [2008] showed that periodic proton density structures occurred at particular radial length-scales more often than others. The source of these periodic density structures is a significant and outstanding question. Are they generated in the interplanetary medium, or are they a …

Visualizing Population Dynamics Of Alaska's Arctic Communities, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Angela M. Mitiguy Dec 2009

Visualizing Population Dynamics Of Alaska's Arctic Communities, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Angela M. Mitiguy

Sociology

Abstract

Arctic demography has previously been reviewed on a large scale, across the circumpolar nations. We look instead at some recent population dynamics on sub-regional to community scales, focusing on Arctic Alaska. Detailed graphics depicting yearly population changes from 1990 to 2006 in 43 selected Arctic Alaska towns and villages and all 27 of the state's "county-equivalent entities" (e.g., boroughs) have been published online in connection with two International Polar Year projects. Seemingly comparable places within the same borough have taken widely divergent paths. Birth rates generally exceed death rates, although both are high. Year-to-year and place-to-place variations are dominated …

State Linearization Of Control Systems: An Explicit Algorithm, Issa Amadou Tall Dec 2009

State Linearization Of Control Systems: An Explicit Algorithm, Issa Amadou Tall

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

In this paper we address the problem of linearization of nonlinear control systems using coordinate transformations. Although necessary and sufficient geometric conditions have been provided in the early eighties, the problem of finding the linearizing coordinates is subject to solving a system of partial differential equations and remained open 30 years later. We will provide here a complete solution to the problem by defining an algorithm allowing to compute explicitly the linearizing state coordinates for any nonlinear control system that is indeed linearizable. Each algorithm is performed using a maximum of n - 1 steps (n being the dimension …

Explicit Feedback Linearization Of Control Systems, Issa Amadou Tall

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

This paper addresses the problem of feedback linearization of nonlinear control systems via state and feedback transformations. Necessary and sufficient geometric conditions were provided in the early eighties but finding the feedback linearizing coordinates is subject to solving a system of partial differential equations and had remained open since then. We will provide in this paper a complete solution to the problem (see the companion paper where the state linearization has been addressed) by defining an algorithm that allows to compute explicitly the linearizing state coordinates and feedback for any nonlinear control system that is truly feedback linearizable. Each algorithm …

Singing Across The Scars Of Wrong: Johnny Cash And His Struggle For Social Justice, Kenneth D. Tunnell, Mark S. Hamm Dec 2009

Singing Across The Scars Of Wrong: Johnny Cash And His Struggle For Social Justice, Kenneth D. Tunnell, Mark S. Hamm

Justice Studies Faculty and Staff Research

The life and music of Johnny Cash are explored in this article as we detail his commitment to social justice. Situating his politics and biography within a cultural criminology orientation, we show that Cash's lived politics and edgy music reflect his concerns with the working class, the dispossessed, the rebellious, the American Indian, and above all, the convict. A pusher of social causes, Cash advocated for prison reform through decades of social activism and public and private politics. DOI: 10.1177/1741659009346015

Digital Rights Management, Fair Use, And Privacy: Problems For Copyright Enforcement Through Technology, Eric A. Robinson

Other Topics

This article discusses the nature of Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems with regard to the problems they pose to traditional exceptions to copyright restrictions. Problems of fair use and the copying of material for preservation are examined in the context of the architecture of digital rights management systems, and the limitations of current DRM systems in accommodating these policies are examined. The monitoring of usage by the licensing modules of these systems is also criticized for its lack of protection of user privacy and the potential chilling of intellectual freedom. Various potential solutions to these are briefly surveyed with a …
