Approximating Stationary Statistical Properties, Xiaoming Wang Dec 2009

Approximating Stationary Statistical Properties, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is well-known that physical laws for large chaotic dynamical systems are revealed statistically. Many times these statistical properties of the system must be approximated numerically. the main contribution of this manuscript is to provide simple and natural criterions on numerical methods (temporal and spatial discretization) that are able to capture the stationary statistical properties of the underlying dissipative chaotic dynamical systems asymptotically. the result on temporal approximation is a recent finding of the author, and the result on spatial approximation is a new one. Applications to the infinite Prandtl number model for convection and the barotropic quasi-geostrophic model are …

Utilizing data from the United States Bureau of Economic Analysis, USDA Economics Research Service, USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, and Minnesota IMPLAN Group, Inc., the economic contribution of agriculture on the Arkansas economy was estimated for the most recent year available, 2007. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by State information for Arkansas was compared with those of other states in the southeast U.S. to give a measure of the relative importance of agriculture in Arkansas. The total economic contribution of agriculture (direct, indirect, …

Empty Ritual: Young-Adult Stepchildren’S Perceptions Of The Remarriage Ceremony, Leslie A. Baxter, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Jody Koenig Kellas, Cassandra Leclair-Underberg, Emily Lamb Normand, Tracy Routsong, Matthew Thatcher Dec 2009

Empty Ritual: Young-Adult Stepchildren’S Perceptions Of The Remarriage Ceremony, Leslie A. Baxter, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Jody Koenig Kellas, Cassandra Leclair-Underberg, Emily Lamb Normand, Tracy Routsong, Matthew Thatcher

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This qualitative study investigated 80 young-adult stepchildren’s talk about one of their parents’ remarriage ceremony. The remarriage event was celebrated in six types of ritual enactments, five of which celebrated the couple’s marriage and one of which was family-centered in its celebration of the beginning of the new stepfamily. Three factors led stepchildren to find the remarriage ceremony empty: (i) a ritual form that was too traditional or not traditional enough; (ii) a ritual enactment that failed to pay homage to either the stepchild’s family of origin or the stepfamily as a unit; and (iii) a ritual enactment that failed …

Accurate mapping and modeling of urban environments are critical for their efficient and successful management. Superior understanding of complex urban environments is made possible by using modern geospatial technologies. This research focuses on thematic classification of urban land use and land cover (LULC) using 248 bands of 2.0 meter resolution hyperspectral data acquired from an airborne imaging spectrometer (AISA+) on 24th July 2006 in and near Terre Haute, Indiana. Three distinct study areas including two commercial classes, two residential classes, and two urban parks/recreational classes were selected for classification and analysis. Four commonly used classification methods – maximum likelihood (ML), …

Event Coverage In Sparse Mobile Sensor Networks, Mark Snyder, Sriram Chellappan Dec 2009

Event Coverage In Sparse Mobile Sensor Networks, Mark Snyder, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Autonomous mobile sensors are employed with ever-increasing frequency, in applications ranging from search and rescue, detection of forest fires, and battlefield surveillance. in this paper, we consider a representative surveillance problem wherein a sparse number of mobile sensors are expected to cover events of interest in a deployment field. Each event appears for a certain time and then disappears. Furthermore, the location of each event and its duration is unknown. in this paper, we design a sensor movement strategy based on efficient traversal in the network to fulfill two objectives: maximizing event detection and minimizing detection delay. Analysis and simulations …

Predicting Hedge Fund Performance With Style, Melvyn Teo Dec 2009

Predicting Hedge Fund Performance With Style, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

I apply the endogenous benchmark approach to the study of hedge funds. I find that including an investment style benchmark significantly reduces within style correlations in hedge fund residuals. Also, the performance spread between high past alpha t-statistic (a risk-adjusted information ratio) funds and low past alpha t-statistic funds increases dramatically when performance is measured relative to fund investment style. There appears to be valuable information in investment style performance that can aid in fund selection.

Análisis LingüÍstico De La Escritura BilingüE (Español-Inglés) De Los Hablantes De Español Como Lengua Hereditaria En Los Estados Unidos, Maria Luisa Spicer-Ecalante

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Objectives: Different techniques and choices exist for revision of pedicle screws, two of which are pedicle screw combined with cement augmentation and expansive pedicle screw fixation. This biomechanical study was designed to compare the pullout strengths of two different revision techniques. Methods: Fourteen lumbar vertebrae obtained from four calves (mean age 15 months) were divided into two groups equal in number. Monoaxial 6.0-mm pedicle screws were inserted into the right pedicles, and axial pullout testing was performed at a rate of 10 mm/min and failure strengths were recorded. Revision was performed with the same-sized pedicle screws reinforced with polymethyl-methacrylate in …

Imperfections In The Economics Of Public Policy, Imperfections In Markets, And Climate Change, Nicholas Stern Dec 2009

Imperfections In The Economics Of Public Policy, Imperfections In Markets, And Climate Change, Nicholas Stern

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In the last twenty years economics has created much of lasting value and real potential: it has been a very fertile period. But economics has also suffered from what I shall term „collective amnesia‟ covering whole areas of public policy. And on policy and the role of government it has, embarrassingly in my view, swayed with the political winds to the detriment of both our profession and to outcomes. Both the amnesia and the political bending have contributed to the economic crisis of the last year or two and to hostility towards the profession. My purpose here is first to …

The Decision To Migrate And Social Capital: Evidence From Albania, Cristina Cattaneo Dec 2009

The Decision To Migrate And Social Capital: Evidence From Albania, Cristina Cattaneo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The objective of this paper is to determine whether the participation in social organizations, which are commonly defined as a form of social capital, represents a complement or a substitute with respect to emigration. The nature of the relationship depends on the motivations behind the two choices, which induce the households to join a group and to invest in migration. To address this research question a bivariate probit model is employed, in that the decision to migrate and to join a social organization are estimated simultaneously. Both temporary and permanent emigration of the household are addressed. The results of the …

Optimal Sensor Placement In Environmental Research: Designing A Sensor Network Under Uncertainty, Aline James, Craig Tweedie, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich, Martine Ceberio Dec 2009

Optimal Sensor Placement In Environmental Research: Designing A Sensor Network Under Uncertainty, Aline James, Craig Tweedie, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich, Martine Ceberio

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of our main challenges in meteorology and environment research is that in many important remote areas, sensor coverage is sparse, leaving us with numerous blind spots. Placement and maintenance of sensors in these areas are expensive. It is therefore desirable to find out how, within a given budget, we can design a sensor network are important activities was developing reasonable techniques for sensor that would provide us with the largest amount of useful information while minimizing the size of the "blind spot" areas which is not covered by the sensors.

This problem is very difficult even to formulate in …
