Synthesis And Cytotoxic Analysis Of Some Disodium 3Β,6Β-Dihydroxysterol Disulfates, Jianguo Cui, Hui Wang, Yi Xin, Aimin Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Disodium 3β,6β-dihydroxy-5α-cholestane disulfate (1) was synthesized in 4 steps with a high overall yield from cholesterol. First, cholesterol (4a) was converted to cholest-4-en-3,6-dione (5a) via oxidation with pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) and then 5a was reduced by NaBH4 in the presence of NiCl2 to produce cholest-3β,6β-diol (6a). The reaction of 6a with the triethylamine-sulfur trioxide complex generated diammonium 3β,6β-dihydroxy-5α-cholestane disulfate (7a) and the treatment of 7a by cation exchange resin 732 (sodium form)(Na+) yielded the target steroid 1. Disodium 24-ethyl-3β,6β-dihydroxycholest-22-ene disulfate (2) and disodium 24-ethyl-3β,6β-dihydroxycholestane disulfate (3) were synthesized using a similar method. The cytotoxicity of these compounds against Sk-Hep-1 (human …

Phylogeography And Postglacial Dispersal Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) Into The Great Lakes, W. Calvin Borden, Robert A. Krebs Dec 2009

Phylogeography And Postglacial Dispersal Of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus Dolomieu) Into The Great Lakes, W. Calvin Borden, Robert A. Krebs

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Refugia and dispersal routes of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) into the Great Lakes were identified using 427 mitochondrial sequences from across their native range. Overall, smallmouth bass accessed the Great Lakes via long-distance dispersal from multiple refugia, and the distribution of genetic variation reflected the consequences of vicariant, dispersal, and paleogeological events. Proximity of lakes to glacial outlets had a greater predictive power on the resulting distribution of mitochondrial diversity relative to interbasin migration. Populations in the Eastern and Interior Highlands contained the most divergent and oldest haplotypes, reflecting their role as glacial refugia and subsequent high incidence of endemicity. …

Remodeling Of The Tight Junction During Recovery From Exposure To Hydrogen Peroxide In Kidney Epithelial Cells, Jeannette E. Gonzalez, R. J. Digeronimo, D'Ann E. Arthur, Jonathan M. King Dec 2009

Remodeling Of The Tight Junction During Recovery From Exposure To Hydrogen Peroxide In Kidney Epithelial Cells, Jeannette E. Gonzalez, R. J. Digeronimo, D'Ann E. Arthur, Jonathan M. King

Biology Faculty Research

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury results in oxidative stress-induced alterations in barrier function. Activation of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway during recovery from oxidative stress may be an effector of oxidant-induced tight junction reorganization. We hypothesized that tight junction composition and barrier function would be perturbed during recovery from oxidative stress. We developed a model of short-term H2O2 exposure followed by recovery using Madin Darby canine kidney (MDCK II) cells. H2O2 perturbs barrier function without a significant cytotoxic effect except in significant doses. ERK-1/2 and p38, both enzymes of the MAP kinase pathway, were activated …

Altered Regulation Of Contraction-Induced Akt/Mtor/P70s6k Pathway Signaling In Skeletal Muscle Of The Obese Zucker Rat, Anjaiah Katta, Sunil K. Kakarla, Miaozong Wu, Satyanarayana Paturi, Murali K. Gadde, Ravi K. Arvapalli, Madhukar Babu Kolli, Kevin M. Rice, Eric R. Blough Dec 2009

Altered Regulation Of Contraction-Induced Akt/Mtor/P70s6k Pathway Signaling In Skeletal Muscle Of The Obese Zucker Rat, Anjaiah Katta, Sunil K. Kakarla, Miaozong Wu, Satyanarayana Paturi, Murali K. Gadde, Ravi K. Arvapalli, Madhukar Babu Kolli, Kevin M. Rice, Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

Increased muscle loading results in the phosphorylation of the 70 kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (p70S6k), and this event is strongly correlated with the degree of muscle adaptation following resistance exercise. Whether insulin resistance or the comorbidities associated with this disorder may affect the ability of skeletal muscle to activate p70S6k signaling following an exercise stimulus remains unclear. Here, we compare the contraction-induced activation of p70S6k signaling in the plantaris muscles of lean and insulin resistant obese Zucker rats following a single bout of increased contractile loading. Compared to lean animals, the basal phosphorylation of p70S6k (Thr389; 37.2% and Thr421/Ser424; 101.4%), …

The Bone Battle: The Attack On Scientific Freedom, Elizabeth Weiss

Faculty Publications, Anthropology

NAGPRA (lovely acronym) is a federal law, passed in 1989, that requires agencies receiving federal support to allow federally recognized tribes to obtain “culturally affiliated” Native American human remains and artifacts - in other words, to reclaim bones, body parts, and burial objects from museums, research organizations, and other current owners. [...] decisions will be made on the basis of religious belief, not a showing of fact.

Evidence-Based Instruction: A Classroom Experiment Comparing Nominal And Brainstorming Groups, Lynn E. Miller Dec 2009

Evidence-Based Instruction: A Classroom Experiment Comparing Nominal And Brainstorming Groups, Lynn E. Miller

Organization Management Journal

Interactive brainstorming groups consistently produce fewer ideas, and fewer high quality ideas, than nominal groups, whose members work alone before pooling their ideas. Yet, brainstorming continues to be regarded as an effective method for enhancing creativity. This paper describes an engaging classroom ‘‘experiment’’ that reliably demonstrates the superiority of nominal over brainstorming groups for generating more ideas. Analyses of data from 105 student groups, collected from 12 classes, show that typical differences between the two group methods are sizable. Beyond lessons about group techniques, this exercise shows students the limits of intuition and the value of evidence-based management practices.

Dynamic Dialogue: A Multi-Perspective Approach Towards Cultural Competence, Daria C. Crawley, Rex L. Crawley

Organization Management Journal

Interculturalism and race relations are becoming more complex as America becomes more diverse. Recent attention focused on universities’ admissions programs aimed at diversifying the student body only convey a segment of campus efforts addressing diversity. Curriculum development initiatives speak to diversity concerns through course topics centered on issues such as race and gender by stimulating conversations among students and the instructor. This article presents two models for integrating dynamic dialogues/conversations about race across academic curricula. These perspectives shed insight into the challenges of communicating in an intercultural environment. One model highlights attempts at integrating dynamic dialogue programmatically and the other …

Applying Technology To Work: Toward A Better Understanding Of Telework, Timothy D. Golden

Organization Management Journal

Technology is enabling employees to work away from the office as teleworkers, where they experience increased flexibility to manage their work and personal lives. The last several decades have seen telework rapidly expand as a work mode, which offers both new opportunities and challenges for employees and corporations alike. This paper covers a brief overview of telework research and practice, in the hopes of providing a better understanding of this rapidly emerging form of virtual work. The paper first describes its growing popularity and the types of telework being practiced, and then reviews some key findings in prior research by …

Management Education Using Social Media, Charles Wankel Dec 2009

Management Education Using Social Media, Charles Wankel

Organization Management Journal

The millennial generation of students are digital natives coming to higher education with extensive experience in social media. Business and other organizations are expecting their recruits to have high proficiency in these technologies, too. This article is an overview of the use of the main social media in teaching. Facebook, blogs, YouTube, Twitter, MySpace, and Second Life are discussed with examples of how they can be used to foster robust collaboration among learners in management education. The movement to richer media such as video blogs (vlogs) is assessed. Caveats for implementing the social media in higher educational settings are noted.

Ecclesial Questions For The Global Community, Peter Santandreu

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In recent times we, the church, are faced with the ever broadening scope of cultures related to Christianity. What it means to be “Christian” has come a long way from the W.A.S.P. profile that was previously a good cultural indicator. Now, as noted by Shenk, “60% of all Christians live outside of the traditional western heartland.”1 With this fact in mind, we have to ask ourselves two very important questions. How can the history of Christianity be represented in the most all-encompassing way, and what about the Christian …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"At the center of Christian dogma lies the worship of the Holy Trinity. Naturally, with every central focus comes controversy. Throughout history, the interpretation of the Trinity has created a tremendous amount of debate. Opposition to specific interpretation is expected as numerous philosophies are bound to rise due to the simple truth that the reality of God can never be fully comprehended by human efforts. Therefore, with the nature and essence of God being left for definition to a finite source, disagreements about the true nature of God are …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The parent and child relationship is a very unique and interesting one. It is also a topic that has been highly researched and written on. It is one that has puzzled many since such a relationship was first established and it has been exemplified time and time again in various religious texts. Why is this relationship so unique and different than others? Why is it one that demands so much attention? Why is it important enough to have religious significance in the Bible, the Quran, the Torah and many …

The Effectiveness Of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) Within Civil Society, Dyann Brown Dec 2009

The Effectiveness Of Non-Governmental Organizations (Ngos) Within Civil Society, Dyann Brown

International Studies Masters

As the number of NGOs increase, there is concern that their quantity could dilute the cachet of the NGO status- sought by non-profits-- and overburden the United Nations' selection and follow-up review process now conducted every four years. Does the current UN evaluation method used to confer NGO status and conduct review convey an NGO's effectiveness? This paper supports the view that the current evaluation by the UN does not convey effectiveness and needs revamping. Without more timely and rigorous UN evaluations or revised checks and balances, NGOs may suffer the fate of "no confidence" of their supporters, beneficiaries and …
