Strange Encounters: Exploring Law And Film In The Affective Register, Ruth Buchanan, Rebecca Johnson Jan 2009

Strange Encounters: Exploring Law And Film In The Affective Register, Ruth Buchanan, Rebecca Johnson

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper argues that taking seriously the embodied and affective dimensions of thought is important in relation both to the critical and transformative possibilities of Law-and-Film scholarship. In it, the authors begin the work of revealing the ways that film works to produce what Raymond Williams called the 'structures of feeling' that help to cohere contemporary legal and political institutions. In its first section, it seeks to develop a more robust vocabulary for discussing how films work on their viewers. Building on the insights of William Connolly regarding the multilayered nature of thought, it discusses how the non-cognitive registers for …

Joshua And The Education Of A Nation: Jamaica Educational Reform In The Manley-Era, 1972-1980, Dionne Dean Jan 2009

Joshua And The Education Of A Nation: Jamaica Educational Reform In The Manley-Era, 1972-1980, Dionne Dean

Master's Theses

Former Jamaican Prime Minister, Michael Manley and the Peoples National Party were concerned with the future manpower needs of the developing nation. They were also concerned with what education meant for the political process in Jamaica. World financial organizations such as the IMF and World Bank loaned the country millions of dollars to aid in the development of educational programs. However, they also expected a return on investment in the form of an educated labor force to be utilized by foreign investors. Foreign aid organizations such as CIDA and UNESCO also contributed greatly to educational advancement on the island. They …

Whistle Past The Church No More, Perceptions On Added Value To Industrial Tourism In Dublin's Liberties, Tony Kiely Jan 2009

Whistle Past The Church No More, Perceptions On Added Value To Industrial Tourism In Dublin's Liberties, Tony Kiely

Conference papers

Situated in the Liberties area of Dublin, and within a short walk of Trinity College, the Guinness Storehouse serves as an iconic key attractor for up to one million visitors annually. The success of this visitor attraction can be directly attributed to a “brand immersion” strategy, which emotionally links the visitor with the brand through cultural identification alignment. Yet many tourists, in accessing Ireland’s premier tourist attraction, often pass within the shadows of a cluster of lesser known, but nonetheless significant church heritage sites. While acknowledging that at the extreme ends of an experience continuum “brand visitation” and “church visitation” …

Inside The Image And The Word: The Re/Membering Of Indigenous Identities, Dina Fachin Jan 2009

Inside The Image And The Word: The Re/Membering Of Indigenous Identities, Dina Fachin

Ethnic Studies Review

By appropriating the power of writing of the phonetic Latin alphabet and recent visual technology, new generations of indigenous people from the Americas have been able to articulate and reinforce their own sense of identity from "within" their cultural constructs. In so doing, they have been shaping new narratives of indigenous adaptation and survival based on native ontologies and epistemologies that critically decolonize the homogenizing forces of national and global rhetoric. I argue that the texts under examination put forward ways to conceive and to know individual and communal identity that cannot be understood outside specific, ancient notions of territoriality …

Defining Empirical Frames Of Reference In Constitutional Cases: Unraveling The As-Applied Versus Facial Distinction In Constitutional Law, David L. Faigman Jan 2009

Defining Empirical Frames Of Reference In Constitutional Cases: Unraveling The As-Applied Versus Facial Distinction In Constitutional Law, David L. Faigman

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

As well illustrated by the litigation in Brown v. Board of Education, it is incumbent on the Supreme Court to identify the empirical frame of reference it uses to evaluate the constitutionality of some challenged action. In Brown, this required the Court to determine whether the proper frame of reference through which to measure constitutionality were the general effects of segregation, or whether constitutionality had to be assessed based on segregation's effects on the children involved in the specific cases before the Court. The Court chose the general frame, thus invalidating school segregation generally. This framing problem occurs throughout constitutional …

The Success And Sustainability Of Improvisation In A Live Performance Context, Ashleigh Rose Berry Jan 2009

The Success And Sustainability Of Improvisation In A Live Performance Context, Ashleigh Rose Berry

Theses : Honours

I am interested in investigating the value improvisation holds when placed in a live dance performance context. I am discussing improvisation in terms of it being an individual exploration of one's movement potential to create a personal movement language. Within this, I place focus on the body as a source of knowledge and the embodied movement possibilities that inevitably make up each individual dancer's personal movement language. I am also interested in the audience's perceptions of what defines successful dance and the dancer and audience relationship that forms during the duration of a performance. Can the practice of improvising be …
