Women’S Possessions And Social Class In Contemporary Zagreb, Katherine Sredl Jan 2009

Women’S Possessions And Social Class In Contemporary Zagreb, Katherine Sredl

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This research asks if social stratification is related to women's consumption practices of tableware in Zagreb. It uses analytical approaches based on research in the United States that has found a relationship between class stratification and consumer practices and asks how those theories are transferable (Holt, 1998). Research was conducted over nine months in Zagreb, from 2006 to 2007. Thirty women were interviewed in two age groups, from ages 45 to 65 and in their early twenties, from the working, middle and upper classes, to discuss how they acquire, use and display tableware. The major findings are that social class …

Agency And Luck, Joseph Raz Jan 2009

Agency And Luck, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

Advancing an account of responsibility which is based on the functioning of our rational capacities, the paper revisits some central aspects of the moral luck puzzle. It proposes a new variant of Williams’ agent-regret, but concludes that its scope does not coincide with cases of moral luck. It then distinguishes different ways in which the factors beyond our control feature in our engagement with the world which show how the guidance principle (we are responsible for actions guided by our rational powers) recognises a narrower range of situations of moral luck than is often supposed, allowing to distinguish between responsibility …

Playing With A Different Sex: Academic Writing On Women In Rock And Pop, Monica Berger Jan 2009

Playing With A Different Sex: Academic Writing On Women In Rock And Pop, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

This annotated bibliography of academic writing on women in rock in pop should provide an overview of most of the scholarly literature on the topic and reflects my personal interest in methodology. When I returned to graduate school in the late 1990s to study American studies and popular culture, I discovered that academe had changed considerably from my undergraduate days when I studied history of art. Although traditional academic disciplines continue, I found that in the humanities and social sciences, there were no longer neat categories for disciplines and disciplines no longer were isolated from each other.

The topic of …

A Study On Stylistic Development Of Mak Yong Costume In Malaysia / Suriyami Abas, Abas Suriyami

Student Works (2000-2009)

Through times, the skills of arts in human life are developing. Together with fast growing of the technologies, other aspects that cover the norms, cultures and lifestyle are developed as well. In the arts field, it has been a must to create certain techniques and creativity to develop together, e.g. the development of ideas and styles that changed from old to new. Mak Yong, as one of the local Malay traditional arts is often being in the centre of attentions, where the activities of cultural encouragements towards its performance are also developed, where originally it was well known only in …

Recovering A Classically Oral Homiletic, Dave T. Mcclellan Jan 2009

Recovering A Classically Oral Homiletic, Dave T. Mcclellan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the preaching of the word of God has been a synthesis of both oral and written orientations with text providing both the source and the preservation of the sermon, and orality fueling its expression. Expression preceded documentation. Scripture displays this dual nature in its revelation, expression and transmission. But with the technologizing of the word in typographic literacy, sermons became increasingly conditioned by the literate sensorium and lost many of their oral psychodynamics. Character, wisdom, dialogue, memory, responsiveness, and flexibility were exchanged for private preparation, literate structuring, and literary delivery. Sermons became disembodied, existing more reliably in externalized text. …

Adolphe Nourrit, Gilbert-Louis Duprez, And Transformations Of Tenor Technique In The Early Nineteenth Century: Historical And Physiological Considerations, Jason Christopher Vest Jan 2009

Adolphe Nourrit, Gilbert-Louis Duprez, And Transformations Of Tenor Technique In The Early Nineteenth Century: Historical And Physiological Considerations, Jason Christopher Vest

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The April 1837 debut of tenor Gilbert-Louis Duprez at the Paris Opéra sparked uproarious applause and inspired a new group of tenors with a different vocal technique from tenors of the previous generation. Whereas previous tenors of the nineteenth century sang in a graceful, light, and flexible style that complemented the operatic compositions of Gluck, Rossini, and Bellini, Duprez sang in a powerful, forceful voice that brought new dramatic fervor to the existing repertoire of French Grand Opera. Duprez’ stentorian vocal representations of Arnold in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell and Robert in Meyerbeer’s Robert le diable, among others, inspired composers …

Music And Identity In Circuit Chautauqua: 1904-1932, Paige Clark Lush Jan 2009

Music And Identity In Circuit Chautauqua: 1904-1932, Paige Clark Lush

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the place of music in circuit chautauqua, the place of circuit chautauqua in American culture, and the role of music in defining that place. It takes into account the perception of chautauqua as a conduit by which higher culture and urban intellectual discourse could reach rural Americans, and the implications of this perception on musical programming.

The heyday of the circuit chautauqua movement (1904-1932) occurred during a time of considerable interaction between, and discussion of, entertainment and education in the United States. Music was important to the self-image of those involved in the entertainment and education industries, …

Cultural And Intellectual Responses To The Black Death, Brian David Yurochko Jan 2009

Cultural And Intellectual Responses To The Black Death, Brian David Yurochko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From the fall of the Roman Empire to the "Age of Translations," Western Europe endeavored to rise above the so-called cultural and intellectual "Dark Ages." That advancement was threatened with the arrival of the Black Death in 1347. Chapter one details the correlation between the spread of the plague and the location of the first universities. It also examines the expansion of the university system throughout the continent in the wake of the plague. The second chapter looks at the cultural, especially religious, explanations of and responses to the Black Death. It examines how medieval society used the religious tools …

Congregate Mealsite Participants’ Self-Reported And Functional Health, Participation In Activities And Attitudes Toward Aging In Wisconsin, Amy Ramsey Jan 2009

Congregate Mealsite Participants’ Self-Reported And Functional Health, Participation In Activities And Attitudes Toward Aging In Wisconsin, Amy Ramsey

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The number of older Americans is increasing. Participation in activities is essential for maintaining health and functional independence, preventing or delaying chronic diseases and improving quality of life. Generally, as older adults age, prevalence of regular activity declines. Many older adults are not engaging in activities and are not receiving the health benefits that these offer.

This cross-sectional study used a self-administered survey to examine whether there is an association between attitudes toward aging, self-reported and functional health, and participation in activities among older adults aged 55 and older who attend congregate mealsites in Wisconsin. It was hypothesized that older …

Puentes Teatrales, Montajes "De Ida Y Vuelta": Argentinos A La Conquista De La Escena Barcelonesa, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Throughout the present decade, a succession of playwrights, directors and theatre artists from Argentina have gone about leaving their imprint upon the Barcelona theatrical landscape (and by extension, that of Catalunya), an artistically fertile ground that, since the 1980s (and since the period of the democratic transition), has exhibited an undeniable yearning to breathe fresh air, to imbue itself with new aesthetic paradigms and become an essential point of reference within the world of European drama. Today Barcelona finds itself immersed in the most dynamic and extraordinary period in its modern theatre history, with an abundant outpouring of new drama …

El Teatro De La Época Democrática, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Introduction (Special Cluster On The Catalan Stage, Modern And Contemporary), Sharon G. Feldman Jan 2009

Introduction (Special Cluster On The Catalan Stage, Modern And Contemporary), Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

At an international symposium devoted to the contemporary Catalan stage, which was held at the Institut del Teatre de la Diputació de Barcelona in 2005, director Toni Casares observed how the Catalan theater scene in its post-Franco evolution had, already endured a decade aimed at clarifying its cultural politics. "És l'epoca del teatre institucionalitzat o en vies d'institucionalització," he declared, referring to the decade comprising the years 1985 to 1995. It seemed an almost ironic observation at the time, as any attempt at institutionalization was certainly not a new endeavor for the Catalan theater scene; yet, Casares was also quick …

Teatre (Panorama Crític De La Literatura Catalana)), Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications
