Translating The Transatlantic : West African Literary Approaches To African American Identity, Kelly Opal Secovnie
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
My dissertation, Translating the Transatlantic: West African Literary Approaches to African American Identity, takes a literary-historical approach to the question of Anglophone West African conceptions of African American identity, an often overlooked topic. It represents an important intervention in the fields of African diaspora and African literary studies, both of which continue to suffer from a US-centric view of Africa, and supplements work done in postcolonial theory and cultural studies to include West African conceptions of cultural translation. My project also examines numerous plays by Ghanaian and Nigerian playwrights to understand the ways that African American characters and culture are …

Unwilling Warriors: An Examination Of The Power To Conscript In Peacetime, Jason Britt
Unwilling Warriors: An Examination Of The Power To Conscript In Peacetime, Jason Britt
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
As military involvement overseas persists, pressure to increase the size of the armed services will continue. While higher bonuses and lower recruiting standards relieve this pressure, these measures may not be enough and an active military draft is an attractive alternative. Indeed, although the military draft has been inactive for nearly thirty years, current U.S. involvement overseas has aroused discussion for reactivation of the military draft. In light of this call to reactive the draft, this Student Comment proposes a framework for analyzing the constitutionality of an active military draft under the Thirteenth Amendment. Specifically, this Comment argues that courts …
The Cultural And Literary Discourse Of War In 20th Century America, Robert Michael Ficociello
The Cultural And Literary Discourse Of War In 20th Century America, Robert Michael Ficociello
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In The Cultural and Literary Discourse of War in 2oth-century America, war is re-examined and re-historicized from an American perspective. First, war is contextualized in relation to urban studies, anthropology and literature. The dominant model, war is an extension of politics, for the analysis of war is decentered, and politics becomes the extension of war. In respect to America since the Revolutionary War, the nation is literally birthed from war, and the nation becomes an extension of that war. The perpetual re-writing of that war is seen through the discourses of history, politics, and literature. Therefore, the Cold War can …
The Effects Of Parental Influences On College Student Normative Perceptions Of Peer Alcohol Use, Emily Susanne Mowry Dobran
The Effects Of Parental Influences On College Student Normative Perceptions Of Peer Alcohol Use, Emily Susanne Mowry Dobran
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
There has been speculation as to how college students develop normative descriptive and injunctive perceptions of college student alcohol use. One possible explanation is that parents may be "carriers" of the skewed social norm, passing on their misperceptions of alcohol use to their children (Perkins, 2002).

Voices From The Darkness: A House Of Leaves Experience, Melanie Waltman, '09
Voices From The Darkness: A House Of Leaves Experience, Melanie Waltman, '09
Honors Projects
House of Leaves is both a love letter to the written word and a demonstration of its inadequacies, a cautionary tale, a horror story, a romance, a bildungsroman, an eloquent mockery of literary criticism, and much else besides. It incorporates postmodern poly-vocal framing techniques, which are sort of a literary version of Russian nesting dolls, if the dolls all talked to each other and one was a pathological liar and one was claustrophobic and one denied the existence of any other dolls (but even if there were other dolls, this one would tell you, they're all crazy anyway). Granted, it's …

Medieval Romance And British Romanticism: Gender Constructions In Pullman’S "His Dark Materials" And Tolkien’S "The Lord Of The Rings", Emily Elizabeth Howson
Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies
In a 1999 interview, Philip Pullman, author of His Dark Materials, replied to a question about gender, saying, "Eve is the equal of Adam and shares in whatever it is that happens" (Pullman, Parsons par. 30). J.R.R Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings expressed a different attitude toward male and female. In a letter to his son in 1941, Tolkien wrote, "A man has a lifework, a career ... A young woman, even one 'economically independent' as they say now ... begins to dream of a home, almost at once" (Letters 50). Tolkien's notion of the sexes does …

Strategic Discussions for Nebraska
Nebraskans like where they live. Young and old, they like the
“sense of place” they feel here. They like being part of the legendary
work ethic. They like the fact that, for the most part, they
feel safe here. They like the fact that Nebraska agriculture helps
to feed and power the world.
But when people from other states ask them where they’re
from, they sound apologetic. The Strategic Discussions for
Nebraska team heard variations on that theme everywhere we
went. Caleb Pollard, Executive Director of the Ord Chamber of
Commerce said it best: “we need for Nebraskans to be …

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Advertising Projects
April 28, 2009 — Advertising students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications took home first place in the District 9 American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Competition April 24. A first for the program, this win places the team among an elite group of 15 from across the country that will compete for the national title in Washington, D.C., June 4-5. UNL will represent District 9, which includes Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. Judges were unanimous in their decision that the team, Volation, stood far above the other seven teams competing, with a "risky" concept …

Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine
Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 25, Issue 01, published in 2009. The theme of this issue is Foodways. This issue explores the rich diversity of Appalachian food culture, tracing how Native American, European, and immigrant traditions have blended to shape the region's kitchens, farms, and tables. Articles examine local agriculture, foraging, home cooking, preservation methods, community meals, and restaurant traditions, alongside iconic foods such as cornbread, beans, pork, pepperoni rolls, and candy making. Through stories that connect food to memory, labor, faith, and identity, the issue portrays Appalachian cuisine as dynamic and multicultural, rooted in both historical …

Developing honors opportunities for students in professional schools can be difficult, as noted by, for example, Giazzoni (2007), Bishop and Sittason (2007) and Noble and Dowling (2007) and also as demonstrated by honors program statistics at Texas Christian University (TCU). Despite the difficulty, high achieving students in professional schools should have the opportunity to benefit from an honors education. According to Bruce (2008), “honors education looks different from other types of education. . . . Honors pushes our comfort zones . . . [and] . . . challenges us to . . . be open to new ideas” (19–29). This …

Performance Anxiety: Medusa, Sex And The First Amendment, Amy M. Adler
Performance Anxiety: Medusa, Sex And The First Amendment, Amy M. Adler
Faculty Articles
In this Article, I attempt to solve a First Amendment puzzle by turning to a surprising source. Here is the puzzle: why would the Supreme Court offer robust First Amendment protection to non-obscene pornographic film, while relegating live erotic dance, far less sexually explicit, to the very "perimeter" of First Amendment protection? I suggest that one way to understand this puzzle can be found in the ancient myth of Medusa, the monster Freud interpreted as standing for the castrated female genitals. A direct confrontation with Medusa's stare was deadly. But Perseus slew Medusa by outsmarting her: he looked at her …
