Research Trends

For many editors, the bibliometrics underlying journal rankings are a fuzzy area. But for those already using similar techniques in their research, bibliometrics is another tool to help increase journal quality. Brian Fath tells us how the work of Derek de Solla Price has opened his eyes to the world of citation analysis.

Umpires, Not Activists: The Recent Jurisprudence Of The Nebraska Supreme Court, Richard F. Duncan

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Nebraska is the “Big Red” state, both in football and in politics. The people of Nebraska are conservative and they wish to rule themselves, either directly through the retained powers of initiative and referendum, or indirectly through the process of self-government and laws enacted by their democratically-elected representatives. Government by the judiciary is simply not the way we do things in Nebraska.

The people of Nebraska are fortunate to have a state Supreme Court so much in tune with the will of the people. As this Report has shown, recent decisions of the Nebraska Supreme Court demonstrate that the court, …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Abuse Of Incarcerated Fathers: A Study Of The Measurement Of Abuse, Jeremy Ball Mar 2009

Intergenerational Transmission Of Abuse Of Incarcerated Fathers: A Study Of The Measurement Of Abuse, Jeremy Ball

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on the intergenerational transmission of abuse hypothesis often only examined the existence of abuse. The current study utilizes retrospective recalls of incarcerated male defendants (N = 414), using questions formulated from the modified Conflict Tactics Scales (Straus, 1974). Five logistic regression models are ran, representing a different physical abuse measure, including incidence of physical abuse, severity of physical abuse, and three composite measures: total frequency, total severity, and total frequency/severity. Although social desirability is a limitation in any study relying on self-report data, the comparison of the chi-square (x2) values of each model may give indication …

Acetaminophen Prevents Aging-Associated Hyperglycemia In Aged Rats: Effect Of Aging-Associated Hyperactivation Of P38-Mapk And Erk1/2, Miaozong Wu, Devashish H. Desai, Sunil K. Kakarla, Anjaiah Katta, Satyanarayana Paturi, Anil K. Gutta, Kevin M. Rice, Ernest M. Walker Jr., Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

Background

Aging-related hyperglycemia is associated with increased oxidative stress and diminished muscle glucose transporter-4 (Glut4) that may be regulated, at least in part, by the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK).

Methods

To test the possibility that aging-related hyperglycemia can be prevented by pharmacological manipulation of MAPK hyperactivation, aged (27-month old) Fischer 344/NNiaHSD × Brown Norway/BiNia F1 (F344BN) rats were administered acetaminophen (30 mg/kg body weight/day) for 6 months in drinking water.

Results

Hepatic histopathology, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase analyses suggested that chronic acetaminophen did not cause hepatotoxicity. Compared with adult (6-month) and aged (27-month) rats, very aged rats (33-month) …

Vaccines And Autism: The Evidence And The Law, Alexandra M. Stewart

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

A potential link between the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and autism was dismissed by a federal vaccine court in February 2009. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said the findings demonstrate a lack of medical evidence for any association, while Autism Speaks, a patient advocacy group, said questions remain about potential risks for certain subgroups.

Other legal actions are pending as the scientific and patient advocacy communities debate the need to conduct further research on the vaccine-autism link. Meanwhile, public health advocates worry that continuing concerns about the safety of vaccines may depress the population immunization rate. A small rise …

Protecting The Traditional Knowledge And Cultural Expressions Of Russia’S “Numerically-Small” Indigenous Peoples: What Has Been Done, What Remains To Be Done, Michael Newcity

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The fundamental question is how much interest exists in Russia to extend legal protection to traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. There has been virtually no public, scholarly discussion of this issue in Russia. As far as my research reveals, this article is the first scholarly analysis in Russian or English of the protection of traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions under Russian law. At a technical governmental level, there is some interest in these issues. Specialists from the government of the Russian Federation participate in the work of WIPO's Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge …

The Cultural And Intellectual Property Interests Of The Indigenous Peoples Of Turkey And Iraq, Hannibal Travis

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

My contribution to this symposium will begin in Part I with an overview of the international law of indigenous peoples' intellectual prop- erty interests. Part II will turn to a description of how, over the past millennium and a half, the indigenous peoples of Turkey and Iraq have lost more than two-thirds of their peak populations, most of their cultural and religious sites, and thousands of priceless artifacts and specimens of visual art. Part III will summarize the results of the recent U.S. and EU inquiries into the current deplorable state of the indigenous peoples of Turkey and Iraq. Part …

The Analysis Of 2-Amino-2-Thiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In The Plasma Of Smokers And Non-Smokers, Brian A. Logue, Wendy K. Maserek, Gary A. Rockwood, Michael W. Keebaugh, Steven I. Baskin Mar 2009

The Analysis Of 2-Amino-2-Thiazoline-4-Carboxylic Acid In The Plasma Of Smokers And Non-Smokers, Brian A. Logue, Wendy K. Maserek, Gary A. Rockwood, Michael W. Keebaugh, Steven I. Baskin

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

ATCA (2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid) is a promising marker to assess cyanide exposure because of several advantages of ATCA analysis over direct determination of cyanide and alternative cyanide biomarkers (i.e. stability in biological matrices, consistent recovery, and relatively small endogenous concentrations). Concentrations of ATCA in the plasma of smoking and non-smoking human volunteers were analyzed using gaschromatography mass-spectrometry to establish the feasibility of using ATCA as a marker for cyanide exposure. The levels of ATCA in plasma of smoking volunteers, 17.2 ng/ml, were found to be significantly (p < 0.001) higher than that of non-smoking volunteers, 11.8 ng/ml. Comparison of ATCA concentrations of smokers relative to nonsmokers in both urine and plasma yielded relatively similar results. The concentration ratio of ATCA for smokers versus non-smokers in plasma and urine was compared to similar literature studies of cyanide and thiocyanate, and correlations are discussed. This study supports previous evidence that ATCA can be used to determine past cyanide exposure and indicates that further studies should be pursued to validate the use of ATCA as a marker of cyanide exposure.

Mapping Of Photoperiod-Induced Growth Cessation In The Wild Grape Vitis Riparia, Amanda Garris, Lindsay Clark, Chris Owens, Steven Mckay, James Luby, Kathy Mathiason, Anne Fennell Mar 2009

Mapping Of Photoperiod-Induced Growth Cessation In The Wild Grape Vitis Riparia, Amanda Garris, Lindsay Clark, Chris Owens, Steven Mckay, James Luby, Kathy Mathiason, Anne Fennell

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

In grapevines (Vitis spp.), the timing of growth cessation in the fall is an important aspect of adaptation and a key objective in breeding new grape cultivars suitable for continental climates. Growth cessation is a complex biological process that is initiated by environmental cues such as daylength and temperature, as well as water and nutrient availability. The genetic control of growth cessation in grapevines was studied by mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) in a hybrid grape population. An F2 mapping population was developed by selfing a single F1 plant derived from a cross between an accession of the North American …

Rollins Architecture: A Profile Of Current And Historical Buildings, Wenxian Zhang, Eneido Bano, Charles Stevens

Books about Rollins College and Winter Park

The Rollins College campus has long been recognized as one of the most beautiful in America. Bordered by a picturesque lake and punctuated by majestic oaks and pines, it would be difficult to think of a more idyllic spot to engage in the pursuit of higher learning. Just as Rollins’ founders sought to bring to the Florida frontier the high-quality education of the New England colleges and universities of the late 19th century, they constructed the school’s first buildings in the same New England style. It was not until Rollins’ visionary eighth president, Hamilton Holt, that the College established its …

Thermodynamics Of Effector Binding To Hemocyanin: Influence Of Temperature, Ariane Pott, Michael A. Menze, Manfred K. Grieshaber Mar 2009

Thermodynamics Of Effector Binding To Hemocyanin: Influence Of Temperature, Ariane Pott, Michael A. Menze, Manfred K. Grieshaber

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Hemocyanins are allosterically regulated oxygen carriers freely dissolved in the blood of many crustaceans. The natural modulator urate accumulates under hypoxic conditions in the hemolymph of Homarus vulgaris, and increases the oxygen affinity of the respiratory pigment. Other non-physiological effectors such as caffeine, dimethylxanthines and methylxanthines are also known to modulate the oxygen-binding properties of hemocyanin. In order to gain insight into the thermodynamic driving forces of these interactions we analyzed the binding of several urate analogs to dodecameric hemocyanin at different temperatures by employing isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). All investigated non-physiological effectors including caffeine, dimethylxanthines and methylxanthines bind exothermically …
