Increasing Your Calf Crop By Management, Pregnancy Testing, And Breeding Soundness Examination Of Bulls, George Perry, Russ Daly, Tyler Melroe
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Percent calf crop weaned is influenced more by man¬agement decisions than by any other single factor in a cow herd, and therefore can be a very important factor in annual returns for a cow-calf operation. Percent calf crop weaned is calculated by dividing the number of calves weaned by the total number of females exposed during the breeding season. As shown in Table 1, as percent calf crop weaned increases, pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed increas¬es and production cost per hundred pounds of calf produced decreases. Increasing weaning weights approximately 50 pounds is equal to an increase of …
Fisheries Research Report No. 190 - Esd Reporting And Assessment Subprogram: Strategic Planning, Project Management And Adoption - Stage 2, R Fletcher
Fisheries Research Reports
Final FRDC Report – Project Number 2004/006
The second stage of the operation of the ESD Subprogram was successful, but compared to the focus during the first subprogram period, mostly in a consolidation manner rather than from the generation of significant new tools. This was necessary because it takes time to adopt and integrate significant changes to the methods of operation of agencies and industries. The policies must be there before any real activity can occur and we found that for the broader focused, cross fishery/cross sector applications of the framework, agencies were not in a position for much of …

Avoidance-Suppressing Effect Of Antipsychotic Drugs Is Progressively Potentiated After Repeated Administration: An Interoceptive Drug State Mechanism, Alexa Lucille Mead, Ming Li
Avoidance-Suppressing Effect Of Antipsychotic Drugs Is Progressively Potentiated After Repeated Administration: An Interoceptive Drug State Mechanism, Alexa Lucille Mead, Ming Li
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Antipsychotic drugs selectively suppress conditioned avoidance response. Using a two-way active avoidance response paradigm, we examined the role of drug-induced interoceptive state in the mediation of avoidance-suppressive effect. In Experiment 1, we found that rats intermittently treated with olanzapine (OLZ) (1.0 mg/kg, s.c.) or haloperidol (0.03 mg/kg, s.c.) on the 1st day of a 3-day cycle for seven cycles exhibited a progressive across-session decline in avoidance responding, despite the fact that they exhibited a comparable high level of avoidance responding on the 3rd day of each cycle during the drug-free retraining session. In Experiments 2 and 3, rats that were …

Land Agendas Vis à Vis A Makani (Wind) Discourse: Deconstructing Space/Place Political Agendas In Hawai'i, Sydney Lehua Iaukea
Pacific Studies
This paper analyzes conservation and tourism agendas in Hawai'i as they progressed together in the late 1950s. The two are interconnected and positioned land, people, and culture in particular ways. The silencing of other ways of knowing and interpreting 'āina were intrinsic in the promotion of industry. This paper discusses a "wind discourse" with The Wind Gourd of La'amaomao to interject indigenous readings of space and place in Hawai'i. A reorientation to native recollections of 'āina breaks contemporary social constructs and encourages the resurgence of other ways of knowing self and environment. Herein a Hawaiian wellbeing and identity is strengthened …

Projected Climate-Induced Faunal Change In The Western Hemisphere, Joshua J. Lawler, Sarah L. Shafer, Denis White, Peter Kareiva, Edwin P. Maurer, Andrew R. Blaustein, Patrick J. Bartlein
Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering
Climate change is predicted to be one of the greatest drivers of ecological change in the coming century. Increases in temperature over the last century have clearly been linked to shifts in species distributions. Given the magnitude of projected future climatic changes, we can expect even larger range shifts in the coming century. These changes will, in turn, alter ecological communities and the functioning of ecosystems. Despite the seriousness of predicted climate change, the uncertainty in climate-change projections makes it difficult for conservation managers and planners to proactively respond to climate stresses. To address one aspect of this uncertainty, we …

Little is known about the effectiveness of mangroves in suppressing water level heights during landfall of tropical storms and hurricanes. Recent hurricane strikes along the Gulf Coast of the United States have impacted wetland integrity in some areas and hastened the need to understand how and to what degree coastal forested wetlands confer protection by reducing the height of peak water level. In recent years, U.S. Geological Survey Gulf Coast research projects in Florida have instrumented mangrove sites with continuous water level recorders. Our ad hoc network of water level recorders documented the rise, peak, and fall of water levels …
Ab Initio Exon Definition Using An Information Theory-Based Approach, Peter K. Rogan
Ab Initio Exon Definition Using An Information Theory-Based Approach, Peter K. Rogan
Biochemistry Publications
Transcribed exons in genes are joined together at donor and acceptor splice sites precisely and efficiently to generate mRNAs capa ble of being translated into proteins. The sequence variability in individual splice sites can be modeled using Shannon information theory. In the laboratory, the degree of individual splice site use is inferred from the structures of mRNAs and their relative abundance. These structures can be predicted using a bipartite information theory framework that is guided by current knowledge of biological mechanisms for exon recognition. We present the results of this analysis for the complete dataset of all expressed human exons.

Report to the Water Corporation of Western Australia
This report describes the fishes and freshwater crayfishes of the Donnelly and Warren River catchments and provides a risk assessment to these fauna of the proposed extraction of water from Record Brook (tributary of the Donnelly River) and subsequent transfer to Scabby Gully Dam (Warren River catchment). The proposed location of the structure in Record Brook is at the gauging station ~1 km upstream from the confluence with the Donnelly River. The project aims to divert peak flows in the winter and spring flow period, transferring around 500 ML each year. The …

Town Of Barrington Natural Resources Inventory: A Reference, Strafford Regional Planning Commission
Town Of Barrington Natural Resources Inventory: A Reference, Strafford Regional Planning Commission
PREP Reports & Publications
Barrington is very fortunate to have an abundance and wide variety of natural resources. Given the Town’s location in the fast-growing seacoast region of New Hampshire, development can be expected to place increasing pressures on the Town and its natural resource base. As described throughout this Natural Resources Inventory, there are many natural resources, special habitats and ecosystems that are valuable and worthy of further consideration for further study, preservation and/or active management. Current zoning ordinances and land use regulations provide some protections. However, the Town can take several additional approaches to maintain and protect its rural character, and itsspecial …

Mathematics Deficiencies In Children With Very Low Birth Weight Or Very Preterm Birth, H. Gerry Taylor, Kimberly A. Espy, Peter J. Anderson
Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory: Faculty Publications
Abstract Children with very low birth weight (VLBW, < 1500 g) or very pre-term birth (VPTB, < 32 weeks gestational age or GA) have more mathematics disabilities or deficiencies (MD) and higher rates of mathematics learning disabilities (MLD) than normal birth weight term-born children (NBW, > 2500 g and > 36 weeks GA). MD are found even in children without global disorders in cognition or neurosensory status and when IQ is controlled, and they are associated with other learning problems and weaknesses in perceptual motor abilities and executive function. Factors related to poorer mathematics outcomes include lower birth weight and GA, neonatal complications, and possible abnormalities in brain structure. While little is known about the nature of MD in these children, studies of MLD in other neurodevelopmental disorders and in children with learning disabilities provide useful models for further …

A large set of three-dimensional structures of 264 protein-protein complexes with known nonsynonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) at the interface was built using homology-based methods. The nsSNPs were mapped on the proteins' structures and their effect on the binding energy was investigated with CHARMM force field and continuum electrostatic calculations. Two sets of nsSNPs were studied: disease annotated Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) and nonannotated (non-OMIM). It was demonstrated that OMIM nsSNPs tend to destabilize the electrostatic component of the binding energy, in contrast with the effect of non-OMIM nsSNPs. In addition, it was shown that the change of …
Constructing And Using Case Studies In Genetics To Engage Students In Active Learning, Sue Styer
Constructing And Using Case Studies In Genetics To Engage Students In Active Learning, Sue Styer
Faculty Publications & Research
One of the national goals in science education is to teach science in a way that mirrors the process of science as inquiry, described by the National Science Education Standards (NSES) Science Teaching Standard B and Content Standard A (NRC, 1996). Inquiry-based learning, including the use of case studies, is one of several types of active learning that allows students to experience critical thinking skills inherent in the science process (Handelsman et al., 2007). Using case studies also develops skills in group learning and personalizes and humanizes science, making it more relevant to students (National Center for Case Study Teaching …
Propitious Checkpoint Intervals To Improve System Performance, Sarala Arunagiri, John T. Daly, Patricia J. Teller
Propitious Checkpoint Intervals To Improve System Performance, Sarala Arunagiri, John T. Daly, Patricia J. Teller
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The large scale of current and next-generation massively parallel processing (MPP) systems presents significant challenges related to fault tolerance. For applications that perform periodic checkpointing, the choice of the checkpoint interval, the period between checkpoints, can have a significant impact on the execution time of the application and the number of checkpoint I/O operations performed by the application. These two metrics determine the frequency of checkpoint I/O operations performed by the application, and thereby, the contribution of the checkpoint operations to the I/O bandwidth demand made by the application. In a computing environment where there are concurrent applications competing for …

Parameterizing The Growth-Decline Boundary For Uncertain Population Projection Models, Joan Lubben, Derek Boeckner, Richard Rebarber, Stuart Townley, Brigitte Tenhumberg
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We consider discrete time linear population models of the form n(t + 1) = An(t) where A is a population projection matrix or integral projection operator, and represents a structured population at time t. It is well known that the asymptotic growth or decay rate of n(t) is determined by the leading eigenvalue of A. In practice, population models have substantial parameter uncertainty, and it might be difficult to quantify the effect of this uncertainty on the leading eigenvalue. For a large class of matrices and integral operators A, we …

The Role Of Human Emotion In Christian Discipleship, Alex Bryan
The Role Of Human Emotion In Christian Discipleship, Alex Bryan
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation asks and attempts to answer the following question: What role does human emotion play in the problem of contemporary Christian discipleship and how might emotion play a provisional and productive role in its success ? The argument of this project, in response to the above question, is that recognition and recreation of human emotions is essential in corifronting the challenges of contemporary Christian discipleship. Just as the rational (left brain) component of human beings is complicit both in the spiritual pathology and redemptive potential of mankind, so to is the emotive (right brain) mind a responsible party in …
