Role Of Mrga In Peroxide And Light Stress In The Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803., Jamie S. Foster, Stephanie A. Havemann, Abhay Singh, Louis A. Sherman
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
In the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, the mrgA gene is part of the PerR regulon that is upregulated during peroxide stress. We determined that an ΔmrgA mutant was highly sensitive to low peroxide levels and that the mutant upregulated a gene cluster (sll1722-26) that encoded enzymes involved with exopolymeric substance (EPS) production. We made mutants in this EPS cluster in both a wild type and ΔmrgA background and studied the responses to oxidative stress by measuring cell damage with LIVE/DEAD stain. We show that Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 becomes highly sensitive to oxidative stress …
Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognate Words, José A. Montelongo, Anita C. Hernández, Roberta J. Herter
Transparency Ratings For Spanish–English Cognate Words, José A. Montelongo, Anita C. Hernández, Roberta J. Herter
Library Scholarship
Cognates are words that are orthographically, semantically, and syntactically similar in two languages. There are over 20,000 Spanish-English cognates in the Spanish and English languages. Empirical research has shown that cognates facilitate vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension for language learners when compared to noncognate words. In this study, transparency ratings for over two thousand nouns and adjectives drawn from the Juilland and Chang-Rodríguez’ Spanish Word Frequency Dictionary were collected. The purpose for collecting the ratings was to provide researchers with calibrated materials to study the effects of cognate words on learning.
Real-Time Wind Estimation And Video Compression Onboard Miniature Aerial Vehicles, Andres Felipe Rodriguez Perez
Real-Time Wind Estimation And Video Compression Onboard Miniature Aerial Vehicles, Andres Felipe Rodriguez Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous miniature air vehicles (MAVs) are becoming increasingly popular platforms for the collection of data about an area of interest for military and commercial applications. Two challenges that often present themselves in the process of collecting this data. First, winds can be a significant percentage of the MAV's airspeed and can affect the analysis of collected data if ignored. Second, the majority of MAV's video is transmitted using RF analog transmitters instead of the more desirable digital video due to the computational intensive compression requirements of digital video. This two-part thesis addresses these two challenges. First, this thesis presents an …
Biogeography Of The Livebearing Fish Poecilia Gillii In Costa Rica: Are Phylogeographic Breaks Congruent With Fish Community Boundaries?, Jared Benjamin Lee
Biogeography Of The Livebearing Fish Poecilia Gillii In Costa Rica: Are Phylogeographic Breaks Congruent With Fish Community Boundaries?, Jared Benjamin Lee
Theses and Dissertations
One of the original goals of phylogeography was to use genetic data to identify historical events that might contribute to breaks among biotic communities. In this study, we examine the phylogeography of a common livebearing fish (Poecilia gillii) from Costa Rica. Our goal was to see if phylogeographic breaks in this species were congruent with previously-defined boundaries among four fish community provinces. We hypothesized that if abiotic factors influence both community boundaries and genetic structuring in P. gillii then we would find four monophyletic clades within our focal species that were geographically separated along community boundary lines. Similarly, we expected …

A Neutral Network Based Vehicle Classification System For Pervasive Smart Road Security, Naixue Xiong, Jing (Selena) He, Jong Hyuk Park, Donald Cooley
Faculty Articles
Pervasive smart computing environments make people get accustomed to convenient and secure services. The overall goal of this research is to classify vehicles along the I215 freeway in Salt Lake City, USA. This information will be used to predict future roadway needs and the expected life of a roadway. The classification of vehicles will be performed by a synthesis of multiple sets of features. All feature sets have not yet been determined; however, one such set will be the reduced wavelet transform of the image of a vehicle. In order to use such a feature, it is necessary that the …

Gender Trouble In Northern Ireland: An Examination Of Gender And Bodies Within The 1970s And 1980s Provisional Irish Republican Army In Northern Ireland, Jennifer Earles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With this thesis, I will utilize both feminist and queer theory to highlight the gendered and bodily tactics used by the women of the 1970s/1980s Provisional Irish Republican Army. I will explore how women can both manipulate gender and use their bodies as a response to gender, ethnic, class, and colonial power relations and conflict discourses, the limitations of these approaches, and how these actions can work to reconfigure political movements, local cultures, and create a space for social change and a future beyond conflict which includes women. My methods will include a feminist content analysis of interviews, written records, …

Paracrine Sonic Hedgehog Signalling By Prostate Cancer Cells Induces Osteoblast Differentiation, Samantha M Zunich, Taneka Douglas, Maria Valdovinos, Tiffany Chang
Dartmouth Scholarship
Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and components of its signalling pathway have been identified in human prostate carcinoma and increased levels of their expression appear to correlate with disease progression and metastasis. The mechanism through which Shh signalling could promote metastasis in bone, the most common site for prostate carcinoma metastasis, has not yet been investigated. The present study determined the effect of Shh signalling between prostate cancer cells and pre-osteoblasts on osteoblast differentiation, a requisite process for new bone formation that characterizes prostate carcinoma metastasis.

Epidemiology Of Early And Late Growth In Height, Leg And Trunk Length: Findings From A Birth Cohort Of Brazilian Males, D. P. Gigante, Aydin Nazmi, R. C. Lima, F. C. Barros, Cesar G. Victora
Food Science and Nutrition
Background/Objective:To investigate socioeconomic, gestational and early life exposures as potential determinants of total height, leg and trunk length.
Subjects/Methods:Male subjects from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study were examined in 1986 at home, and in 2000 when registering at the local army base. The follow-up rate was 79%. Standing and sitting heights were measured on both occasions. Leg length was calculated as the difference between standing and sitting heights. Outcome measures were height, leg and trunk length at 4 and 18 years and growth in this period. Complete data were obtained for 2012 participants, representing 71% of all …

Characterization Of Drug-Protein Interactions In Blood Using High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, David S. Hage, Abby Jackson, Matt Sobansky, John E. Schiel, Michelle J. Yoo, K. S. Joseph
David Hage Publications
The binding of drugs with proteins in blood, serum or plasma is an important process in determining the activity, distribution, rate of excretion, and toxicity of drugs in the body. Highperformance affinity chromatography (HPAC) has received a great deal of interest as a means for studying these interactions. This review examines the various techniques that have been used in HPAC to examine drug-protein binding and discusses the types of information that can be obtained through this approach. A comparison of these techniques with traditional methods for binding studies (e.g., equilibrium dialysis and ultrafiltration) will also be presented. The use of …

Indigenous Intellect: Problems Of Calling Knowledge Property And Assigning It Rights, Daniel Austin Green
Indigenous Intellect: Problems Of Calling Knowledge Property And Assigning It Rights, Daniel Austin Green
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
This essay likely raises more questions than it answers, but I do offer the following, somewhat pragmatist, conclusions: (1) patents should not cover collective knowledge in the first place, because patents, if at all justifiable, should serve only as an incentive to innovate, not a tool to exploit existing methods; (2) to the extent patents and other intellectual property protections granted to outsiders do continue to extend over such knowledge, there are methods for (and suc- cess stories of) groups that have been able to take control of and reap the benefits of their collective knowledge; (3) under the most …
Using Patents To Protect Traditional Knowledge, Jay Erstling
Using Patents To Protect Traditional Knowledge, Jay Erstling
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
The role that intellectual property can play in the protection of traditional knowledge (TK) has been on the international agenda for more than ten years, with little to show for it. For example, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has provided a forum for international policy debate on the subject since 1998, and the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) has held meetings on draft provisions for the protection of TK against misappropriation and misuse since 2001. Similarly, since 1999 the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been examining the most effective means …

Indigenizing Intellectual Property Law: Customary Law, Legal Pluralism, And The Protection Of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, Identity, And Resources, Danielle M. Conway
Texas Wesleyan Law Review
When this article promotes its theme of indigenizing intellectual property law, it means to apply legal pluralism to justify employment of Indigenous law as a primary source of law to begin the development of a sui generis legal system to bring to the fore essential protections for Indigenous knowledge, tangible and intangible cultural materials and artifacts, secret and sacred information and know-how, cultural expressions, and the biogenetic resources justly owned and possessed by Indigenous Peoples. By urging adoption of the indigenizing paradigm, this article implies that the current and most widely used and recognized laws governing intellectual property are, in …
Sharing And Fusing Landmark Information In A Team Of Autonomous Robots, Damian M. Lyons
Sharing And Fusing Landmark Information In A Team Of Autonomous Robots, Damian M. Lyons
Faculty Publications
A team of robots working to explore and map a space may need to share information about landmarks so as register local maps and to plan effective exploration strategies. In this paper we investigate the use of spatial histograms (spatiograms) as a common representation for exchanging landmark information between robots. Each robot can use sonar, stereo, laser and image information to identify potential landmarks. The sonar, laser and stereo information provide the spatial dimension of the spatiogram in a landmark-centered coordinate frame while video provides the image information. We call the result a terrain spatiogram. This representation can be shared …

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate/Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Receptor 2 Signaling Induces Cox-2 Expression In Wilms Tumor, Mei-Hong Li, Teresa Sanchez, Timothy Hla, Fernando Ferrer
UCHC Articles - Research
Purpose
Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has been reported to be ubiquitously expressed in Wilms tumor, the most common malignant renal tumor in children. However, the regulation mechanism of COX-2 expression remains unexplored.
Materials and Methods
Quantitative real-time PCR and western blot analysis were performed to detect COX-2 mRNA and protein expression in WiT49 cells upon the stimulation by sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) as well as S1P2 and COX-2 mRNA expression in 10 fresh frozen Wilms tumor tissues and their matched normal tissues. Overexpression, blockade and downregulation of S1P2 were performed using adenoviral transduction, S1P2 antagonist JTE-013 and siRNA transfection, respectively. The …

Retention Of Polarization Signatures In Shg Microscopy Of Scattering Tissues Through Optical Clearing, Oleg Nadiarnykh, Paul J. Campagnola
UCHC Articles - Research
Polarization responses in Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging microscopy are a valuable method to quantify aspects of tissue structure, and may be a means to differentiate normal and diseased tissues. Due to multiple scattering, the polarization data is lost in turbid tissues. Here we investigate if this information can be retained through the use of optical clearing which greatly reduces the scattering coefficient and increases the corresponding mean free path. To this end, we have measured the SHG intensity as a function of laser polarization and the SHG signal anisotropy in murine tendon and striated muscle over a depth range …
