Use Of Clopidogrel In The Reduction Of Myocardial Damage During Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Arijit Dasgupta, Debabrata Mukherjee

Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

It is estimated that approximately a quarter of patients undergoing coronary intervention may have significant post-procedural creatinine (CK)/creatinine kinase myocardial band (CK-MB) elevations and approximately half may have post-procedural troponin elevations. Current data suggest that periprocedural infarction is associated with short-, intermediate-, and long-term adverse outcomes, most notably mortality. This review examines the role of clopidogrel in decreasing periprocedural myonecrosis following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Clopidogrel is an important pharmacologic agent used to reduce myocardial infarction post-coronary intervention as assessed directly by the evaluation of cardiac biomarkers and indirectly by the evaluation of short-term ischemic events. The optimal dose of …

Photoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Bioconjugated Quantum Dots And Their Application For Early Cancer Detection, Ganna Chornokur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Most of the bio-applications of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) show and utilize their superior optical properties over organic fluorophores. An estimated 3-35% of all cancer deaths could be avoided through early detection, therefore, there is a critical need to develop sensitive probes.

The objectives of this work are:

Research the phenomena of "blue" photoluminescence (PL) spectral shift on the dried bioconjugated QDs and develop the relevant mechanism;

Develop a methodology that will allow successful confirmation of the bioconjugation reaction between biomolecules and QDs;

Propose a modification of an existent method or approach to employ the "blue" spectral shift of bioconjugated …

A Framework For Analyzing Biometric Template Aging And Renewal Prediction, John W. Carls Mar 2009

A Framework For Analyzing Biometric Template Aging And Renewal Prediction, John W. Carls

Theses and Dissertations

Biometric technology and systems are modernizing identity capabilities. With maturing biometrics in full, rapid development, a higher accuracy of identity verification is required. An improvement to the security of biometric-based verification systems is provided through higher accuracy; ultimately reducing fraud, theft, and loss of resources from unauthorized personnel. With trivial biometric systems, a higher acceptance threshold to obtain higher accuracy rates increase false rejection rates and user unacceptability. However, maintaining the higher accuracy rate enhances the security of the system. An area of biometrics with a paucity of research is template aging and renewal prediction, specifically in regards to facial …

Meeting Them Halfway: Using Youtube In A First Year Information Fluency Program, Beth Hillemann, Aaron Albertson

Library Technology Conference

First year college students are used to gathering information through resources such as YouTube and Google. They need to learn about the approach scholars take to disciplinary inquiry. We designed a standardized session that asked students to critically evaluate a message conveyed through a YouTube video. In the session, they used library and network resources to produce a short bibliography of academic articles and books on the topic.

Science, Politics, And Values: The Politicization Of Professional Practice Guidelines, Lawrence O. Gostin, John D. Kraemer Mar 2009

Science, Politics, And Values: The Politicization Of Professional Practice Guidelines, Lawrence O. Gostin, John D. Kraemer

O'Neill Institute Papers

The Connecticut Attorney General’s recent allegations that the Infectious Disease Society of America violated antitrust law through its treatment guidelines for Lyme disease were neither based in sound science or appropriate legal judgment. Strong scientific evidence favors IDSA’s position that chronic infection with the etiologic agent of Lyme disease does not occur in the absence of objective signs of ongoing infection and that long-term antibiotic use to treat dubious infection, recommended in the quasi-scientific guidelines put forth by the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), are of no benefit. In siding with ILADS and other chronic Lyme disease advocates, …

Adult-Young Ratio, A Major Factor Regulating Social Behaviour Of Young: A Horse Study, Alice De Boyer Des Roches, Martine Hausberger Mar 2009

Adult-Young Ratio, A Major Factor Regulating Social Behaviour Of Young: A Horse Study, Alice De Boyer Des Roches, Martine Hausberger

Social Behavior Collection

Background: Adults play an important role in regulating the social behaviour of young individuals. However, a few pioneer studies suggest that, more than the mere presence of adults, their proportions in social groups affect the social development of young. Here, we hypothesized that aggression rates and social cohesion were correlated to adult-young ratios. Our biological model was naturally-formed groups of Przewalski horses, Equus f. przewalskii, varying in composition.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We investigated the social interactions and spatial relationships of 12 one- and two-yearold Przewalski horses belonging to five families with adult-young ratios (AYR) ranging from 0.67 to 1.33. We found …

Repair Leaky Gates/Gaskets To Save Money, Add Profit, C. Dean Yonts, Sandi Alswager Karstens

Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources: News Releases

Keeping up on gravity irrigation repairs not only saves water, but time, money and labor, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln irrigation engineer said.

The off-season is the perfect time to make these repairs, said Dean Yonts, irrigation engineer at UNL's Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff.

"If you didn't flag leaky gaskets and mark leaky gates last irrigation season, be sure to do it this season," he said. "This way if you don't have time to change damaged gates during irrigation season, gaskets can be discarded at the end of the season and gates can be replaced after harvest."

Replacing …

Detection Of Cwd Prions In Urine And Saliva Of Deer By Transgenic Mouse Bioassay, Nicholas J. Haley, Davis M. Seelig, Mark D. Zabel, Glenn C. Telling, Edward A. Hoover Mar 2009

Detection Of Cwd Prions In Urine And Saliva Of Deer By Transgenic Mouse Bioassay, Nicholas J. Haley, Davis M. Seelig, Mark D. Zabel, Glenn C. Telling, Edward A. Hoover

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease affecting captive and free-ranging cervids (e.g. deer, elk, and moose). The mechanisms of CWD transmission are poorly understood, though bodily fluids are thought to play an important role. Here we report the presence of infectious prions in the urine and saliva of deer with chronic wasting disease (CWD). Prion infectivity was detected by bioassay of concentrated, dialyzed urine and saliva in transgenic mice expressing the cervid PrP gene (Tg[CerPrP] mice). In addition, PrP(CWD) was detected in pooled and concentrated urine by protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA). The concentration of abnormal prion protein …

Carbon Nanotube Membranes For Use In The Transdermal Treatment Of Nicotine Addiction And Opioid Withdrawal Symptoms, Caroline L. Strasinger, Nicole N. Scheff, Ji Wu, Bruce J. Hinds, Audra L. Stinchcomb

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Transdermal systems are attractive methods of drug administration specifically when treating patients for drug addiction. Current systems however are deficient in therapies that allow variable flux values of drug, such as nicotine for smoking cessation or complex dosing regimens using clonidine when treating opioid withdrawal symptoms. Through the use of functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes, drug delivery to the skin can be controlled by applying a small electrical bias to create a programmable drug delivery system. Clearly, a transdermal patch system that can be tailored to an individual's needs will increase patient compliance as well as provide much more efficient …

Predicting Protein Secondary Structure Using Markov Chain Monte-Carlo Simulation, Inessa G. Im Mar 2009

Predicting Protein Secondary Structure Using Markov Chain Monte-Carlo Simulation, Inessa G. Im

Theses and Dissertations

Protein structure prediction is one of the most important problems in molecular biology. Secondary structure prediction is the initial starting point in determining three-dimensional structure of a protein. This work presents a novel approach to predict protein secondary structure using Markov chain Monte-Carlo simulation. The transition probabilities are first data-mined from the Dictionary of Protein Secondary Structure which contains over 46,000 known proteins. Monte-Carlo simulation uses these transition probabilities to generate thousands of secondary structure sequences for a given sequence of amino acids. Among these simulated secondary structure sequences, the one with the highest probability is chosen as the prediction. …

Fitting Ace Structural Equation Models To Case-Control Family Data, Kristin N. Javaras, James I. Hudson, Nan M. Laird Mar 2009

Fitting Ace Structural Equation Models To Case-Control Family Data, Kristin N. Javaras, James I. Hudson, Nan M. Laird

COBRA Preprint Series

Investigators interested in whether a disease aggregates in families often collect case-control family data, which consist of disease status and covariate information for families selected via case or control probands. Here, we focus on the use of case-control family data to investigate the relative contributions to the disease of additive genetic effects (A), shared family environment (C), and unique environment (E). To this end, we describe a ACE model for binary family data and then introduce an approach to fitting the model to case-control family data. The structural equation model, which has been described previously, combines a general-family extension of …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Theory Of An Efficacious Treatment Plan., Valerie Jeanette Johnston Mar 2009

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Theory Of An Efficacious Treatment Plan., Valerie Jeanette Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

There are numerous commonalities and similarities in the symptoms presented in those individuals suffering from Korsakoff's Syndrome, Vascular Dementia, B vitamin deficiencies and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. These similarities include physiological, neurological and psychological findings. B vitamin supplementation is being used effectively to treat several of these disorders. Because of these similarities and commonalities in both symptomology and physiology, it is my hypothesis that PTSD may be partially or totally a consequence of a B vitamin deficiency. Narrative re-exposure therapy is already in use to treat those with PTSD. Using the Biopsychosocial Model of health psychology, I propose an empirical study …

Nonlinear Decomposition Analysis And Phase Transition Characterization Of Uterine Contractions, Kemal Aydin Mar 2009

Nonlinear Decomposition Analysis And Phase Transition Characterization Of Uterine Contractions, Kemal Aydin

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States 12.5% of babies are born prematurely. The premature birth rate has increased 27% over the past 20 years. The three principal components of the preterm-birth syndrome are: premature rupture of membranes, myometrial activity causing preterm labor, and premature cervical ripening. We investigated myometrial activities which are noninvasively collected multi-channel magnetomyographic (MMG) data from patients' uterus. On the temporal data mining side, we have developed an advanced signal processing technique to further investigate this data beyond Fourier and Wavelet analysis. On the spatial data mining side, we have developed a method to further explore the interactions between …

Structural Clustering Algorithms For Networks, Nurcan Yuruk Mar 2009

Structural Clustering Algorithms For Networks, Nurcan Yuruk

Theses and Dissertations

The tightly connected groups of entities, so-called modules or clusters, are usually good indicators of structural or functional units of the underlying network. While those units are communities of people in a social network, they refer to web pages of similar topic on WWW, group of molecules that work together to achieve certain biological function in a biological network and etc. Modular structure is one of the most important and ubiquitous features observed in most complex networks and we mainly target the problem of network clustering which has, among other network analysis tasks, particular role of detecting modules in given …
