Biomarkers Of Hiv-1 Associated Dementia: Proteomic Investigation Of Sera, Jayme Wiederin, Wojciech Rozek, Fenghai Duan, Pawel Ciborowski

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Background: New, more sensitive and specific biomarkers are needed to support other means of clinical diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders. Proteomics technology is widely used in discovering new biomarkers. There are several difficulties with in-depth analysis of human plasma/ serum, including that there is no one proteomic platform that can offer complete identification of differences in proteomic profiles. Another set of problems is associated with heterogeneity of human samples in addition intrinsic variability associated with every step of proteomic investigation. Validation is the very last step of proteomic investigation and it is very often difficult to validate potential biomarker with desired …

Satellite Reentry Control Via Surface Area Amplification, Salvador Alemán Mar 2009

Satellite Reentry Control Via Surface Area Amplification, Salvador Alemán

Theses and Dissertations

This project endeavors to find whether it is feasible to use an increase in surface area as a way of increasing the drag on an orbiting object, thus decreasing its orbital lifetime. The surface area increase can be achieved by an apparatus that deploys a balloon. The balloon will act as a parachute that will decrease the potential energy of the object through atmospheric drag. This is most effective by objects that reach the Low Earth altitudes of less than 500 kilometers, where an object is encountering a firmer atmospheric density. The project is carried out through propagating three different …

Unified Behavior Framework In An Embedded Robot Controller, Stephen S. Lin Mar 2009

Unified Behavior Framework In An Embedded Robot Controller, Stephen S. Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Robots of varying autonomy have been used to take the place of humans in dangerous tasks. While robots are considered more expendable than human beings, they are complex to develop and expensive to replace if lost. Recent technological advances produce small, inexpensive hardware platforms that are powerful enough to match robots from just a few years ago. There are many types of autonomous control architecture that can be used to control these hardware platforms. One in particular, the Unified Behavior Framework, is a flexible, responsive control architecture that is designed to simplify the control system’s design process through behavior module …

Using A Multiobjective Approach To Balance Mission And Network Goals Within A Delay Tolerant Network Topology, Anthony L. Larweck

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how to incorporate aspects of an Air Tasking Order (ATO), a Communications Tasking Order (CTO), and a Network Tasking Order (NTO) within a cognitive network framework. This was done in an effort to aid the commander and or network operator by providing automation for battlespace management to improve response time and potential inconsistent problem resolution. In particular, autonomous weapon systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were the focus of this research This work implemented a simple cognitive process by incorporating aspects of behavior based robotic control principles to solve the multi-objective optimization problem of balancing both …

Modeling Of Aircraft Deicing Fluid Induced Biochemical Oxygen Demand In Subsurface-Flow Constructed Treatment Wetlands, William J. Mclaughlin Mar 2009

Modeling Of Aircraft Deicing Fluid Induced Biochemical Oxygen Demand In Subsurface-Flow Constructed Treatment Wetlands, William J. Mclaughlin

Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft deicing is vital to safe operation in cold weather environments. Unfortunately, release of glycol-based aircraft deicing fluids (ADF) to waterways adjacent to airfields poses a significant environmental threat. The deicing fluids used at DoD airfields impart a high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) when they enter waterways. The currently accepted conventional treatment is collection and transport of ADF-laden storm water to a publicly owned treatment works. The volume and BOD concentrations in the storm water often make this type of treatment impractical. Subsurface flow constructed treatment wetlands have been demonstrated to be effective in attenuating ADF-induced BOD. The models currently …

Tobacco Mosaic Virus Templated Synthesis Of One Dimensional Inorganic–Polymer Hybrid Fibres, Jianhua Rong, Fiona Oberbeck, Xinnan Wang, Xiaodong Li, Jerry Oxsher, Zhongwei Niu, Qian Wang

Faculty Publications

Inorganic–polymer hybrid nanofibres were prepared by using a rod-like tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) as a template. With tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor, long silica-coated TMVfibres were formed via a head-to-tail assembly, which showed a substantial increase of the elastic modulus. Furthermore, homogenous titania–TMV hybrid fibres could be prepared using polyaniline-coated TMV fibres as a template, which were used to form a composite film that was able to sense liquefied petroleum gases.

Phosphorus Fractionation And Distribution Across Delta Of Deer Creek Reservoir, Warren C. Casbeer Mar 2009

Phosphorus Fractionation And Distribution Across Delta Of Deer Creek Reservoir, Warren C. Casbeer

Theses and Dissertations

Eutrophication of reservoir systems, which causes deterioration of water quality through increased algal growth, is detrimental to our sustainable water supply and additionally impairs other beneficial reservoir uses. Limiting the amount of phosphorus (P) entering the system has been the key management tool for this problem, as P is the main limiting nutrient for plant and algal growth. These efforts have focused on controlling input of P from point sources, such as effluents from wastewater treatment plants, dairies, and industrial factories. Even in systems (such as reservoirs) with significantly reduced external P loading, however, there has been continued eutrophication and …

Effect Of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine On Cytokine Production By Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Ahmed Al-Shukaili, Suad Al-Abri, Alia Monteil, Michele A. Mar 2009

Effect Of N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine On Cytokine Production By Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Ahmed Al-Shukaili, Suad Al-Abri, Alia Monteil, Michele A.

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: This study investigates the in vitro effect of the antioxidant drug, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), on cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Methods: PBMC were isolated by Ficoll-Hypaque, and stimulated with anti-CD3 antibodies, phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 24 hours in the presence or absence of 5 mM NAC. The cytokines produced were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Treatment with NAC significantly up-regulates the secretion of IL-1β, IL-5 (interleukin) and IFN-γ (interferon) and down regulates IL-10 production, after anti-CD3 or PHA (p<0.05), but not after LPS stimulation. NAC also significantly increased total IL-12 secretion after anti-CD3 (but not PHA or LPS) stimulation and IL-12p40 after anti-CD3, PHA, and LPS stimulation (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results indicate that NAC up-regulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and down regulated anti-inflammatory cytokine production by PBMC, in a process which may be associated with increased levels of glutathione (GSH). Further work is required to determine whether this increase or decrease in cytokine production is due to direct effect of NAC.

Huntington Disease (Chorea) In The Middle East, Euan M. Scrimgeour Mar 2009

Huntington Disease (Chorea) In The Middle East, Euan M. Scrimgeour

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Huntington disease (HD) has been reported in Arab families in several Middle East countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt and in non-Arab populations in other countries in the region. It is probably under-reported, and until now, has not been recorded in Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan or in Iraq. The Middle East has always been on the crossroads of trade and travel, and HD was probably introduced to some of these countries in previous times. The prevalence rate in Middle Eastern Arabs is estimated to vary from 3 to 4 per 100,000. Although the HD gene …

The State Of Human Anatomy Teaching In The Medical Schools Of Gulf Cooperation Council Countries Present And Future Perspectives “Anatomy Is A Science And It Owes It To The Practice”…. Anon., Omar Habbal

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Available literature on medical education charts an emerging trend in the field of anatomy. In the past decade, assisted by innovations in informatics and the paradigm shift in medical education, the hands-on experience of cadaver dissection has progressively becoming a relic of the past. Within the context of the situation in Gulf Cooperation Council countries, this paper compares the traditional teaching approach with the modern one that tends to emphasise technical gadgetry, virtual reality and plastic models rather than hands-on-experience to impart knowledge and skill. However, cadaver-based learning is an important building block for the future physician and surgeon since …

Parental Competencies Of Juvenile Probationers And Adherence To Curt Sanctions And Recidivism Rates, Amy Cook Mar 2009

Parental Competencies Of Juvenile Probationers And Adherence To Curt Sanctions And Recidivism Rates, Amy Cook

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory study was to further investigate the notion of parental competencies through the use of the Juvenile Offender Parent Questionnaire as previously developed by Rose and colleagues (2004). The parent questionnaire was administered to 88 parents of juvenile probationers placed on probation in a Virginia county. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed an eight-factor solution: parental exasperation, parental resignation, mistrust of the juvenile justice system, shame over parenting efficacy, parental monitoring, fear of the child, parent perceptions of child’s exposure to violence, and anger towards child. Regression analyses indicate that parental exasperation and parental resignation were not significant …

The Social Strategies And Goals Of Children With Language Impairment And Typically Developing Children, Veronica Gardner Mar 2009

The Social Strategies And Goals Of Children With Language Impairment And Typically Developing Children, Veronica Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

Past research has indicated that children with language impairment (LI) struggle more than children with typical language in their social interactions (Fujiki, Brinton, & Todd, 1999). The purpose of this study was to determine if the social strategies and goals of children with LI varied from those of children with typically developing language. A social goals questionnaire was used to determine the strategies the children verbally indicated that they would use. The children were then asked why they would use the selected strategy. The responses were then separated into goal categories. A chi-square analysis indicated that children with LI varied …

The oxidation of H-cluster in gas phase, and in aqueous enzyme phase, has been investigated by means of quantum mechanics (QM) and combined quantum mechanics–molecular mechanics (QM/MM). Several potential reaction pathways (in the above-mentioned chemical environments) have been studied, wherein only the aqueous enzyme phase has been found to lead to an inhibited hydroxylated cluster. Specifically, the inhibitory process occurs at the distal iron (Fed) of the catalytic H-cluster (which isalso the atom involved in H2 synthesis). The processes involved in the H-cluster oxidative pathways are O2 binding, e− transfer, protonation, and H2O removal. We found that oxygen binding is …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

In the title compound, [Cu(C7H3NO4)(C5H5N)]n, the CuII atom is in a slightly distorted octahedral coordination environment. Each CuII atom is bound to two N atoms and one O atom of the pyridinedicarboxylate (PDA) ligand in a tridentate manner, one N atom of the pyridine molecule and two bridging carboxylate O atoms of adjacent PDA ligands, leading to a linear one-dimensional chain running along the c axis. These chains are further assembled via weak C-H...O and [pi]-[pi] interactions into a three-dimensional supramolecular network structure. The centroid-centroid distance between the [pi]-[pi] interacting pyridine rings is 3.9104 (13) Å. The two N atoms …

Judging South Dakota Rangelands For Livestock And Wildlife Values, James R. Johnson, L. Michael Sterling Mar 2009

Judging South Dakota Rangelands For Livestock And Wildlife Values, James R. Johnson, L. Michael Sterling

SDSU Extension Circulars

Judging South Dakota Rangelands for Livestock and Wildlife Values is a major advance in the approach to contest judging of South Dakota rangelands. For 25 years beginning in the mid-1970s, range judges identified plants and determined range site, range condition, and management practices for a given set of goals (Johnson et al., EC 731, 1979). In the mid-1990s, the need for a more contemporary judging contest was clear. Oklahoma led the way by changing the National Range Judging Contest in 1994. A year later, South Dakota followed. Several years of field tests and multiple revisions resulted in the current manual.
