Disordered Eating And Substance Use: A Multivariate Longitudinal Twin Desigh, Jessica Baker Apr 2009

Disordered Eating And Substance Use: A Multivariate Longitudinal Twin Desigh, Jessica Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Eating disorders and substance use disorders both exhibit a clear sex-difference in prevalence. Eating disorders are more common in females while substance use disorders are more common in males. Previous research has also established a strong association between these two disorders, especially within females. Much less research has examined comorbity in males. The etiology and reasons for these sex-differences and for the comorbidity of eating and substance use disorders remain unclear. The present report aimed to examine disordered eating (DE), substance use (SU), and their comorbidity further, in both sexes, using disorder eating attitudes and behaviors and substance use rather …

Evolutionary Conserved Motif Finder (Ecmfinder) For Genome-Wide Identification Of Clustered Yy1- And Ctcf-Binding Sites, Keunsoo Kang, Jae Hoon Chung, Joomyeong Kim Apr 2009

Evolutionary Conserved Motif Finder (Ecmfinder) For Genome-Wide Identification Of Clustered Yy1- And Ctcf-Binding Sites, Keunsoo Kang, Jae Hoon Chung, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

We have developed a new bioinformatics approach called ECMFinder (Evolutionary Conserved Motif Finder). This program searches for a given DNA motif within the entire genome of one species and uses the gene association information of a potential transcription factor-binding site (TFBS) to screen the homologous regions of a second and third species. If multiple species have this potential TFBS in homologous positions, this program recognizes the identified TFBS as an evolutionary conserved motif (ECM). This program outputs a list of ECMs, which can be uploaded as a Custom Track in the UCSC genome browser and can be visualized along with …

Universal Constant For Heat Production In Protists, Matthew D. Johnson, Jens Völker, Holly V. Moeller, Edward Laws, Kenneth J. Breslauer, Paul G. Falkowski

Faculty Publications

Using a high sensitivity differential scanning calorimeter in isothermal mode, we directly measured heat production in eukaryotic protists from 5 phyla spanning over 5 orders of magnitude in carbon biomass and 8 orders of magnitude in cell volume. Our results reveal that metabolic heat production normalized to cell mass is virtually constant in these organisms, with a median of 0.037 pW pg C -1 (95% confidence interval = 0.022-0.061 pW pg C -1) at 5 °C. Contrary to allometric models, the relationship between heat production and cell carbon content or surface area is isometric (scaling exponents, 1.056 and 1.057, …

Strategies Multiracial College Women Use To Navigate Monoracial Systems, Minisa Chapman-Huls Apr 2009

Strategies Multiracial College Women Use To Navigate Monoracial Systems, Minisa Chapman-Huls

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

An exploration of the college experiences of multiracial women uncovered the strategies they used to navigate the monoracial system of predominately white institutions. A purposeful sample of 18 women who were multiracial was chosen. Data was collected through semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Participants’ stories represented multiracial experiences at thirteen different undergraduate institutions. A participant’s precollege experiences, identity and the college’s peer culture impacted how she approached social situations in the highly homogenous and monoracial setting at college. Participants took on the roles of pacifist, non-conformist, and activist to successfully navigate college environments and social scenarios. The findings also support prior study …

Consequences Of Hyaluronan Metabolism On Cell Cycle Progression In Prostate Tumor Growth And Metastasis, Alamelu G. Bharadwaj Apr 2009

Consequences Of Hyaluronan Metabolism On Cell Cycle Progression In Prostate Tumor Growth And Metastasis, Alamelu G. Bharadwaj

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Progression of Prostate cancer (CaP), depends on a complex series of interactions between the tumor and extracellular matrix (ECM) leading to tumor growth and metastasis. Hyaluronan (HA), an ECM component, is elevated in CaP and its accumulation in the tumor microenvironment is dependent on its synthetic enzyme, hyaluronan synthase (HAS), and turnover enzyme, hyaluronidase (Hyal). Although Hyal1 expression can independently prognosticate CaP, and HAS expression shows increase in aggressive prostate cancer cells, the functional relevance of this correlation is unexplored. In these studies we aim to dissect the roles of HAS and Hyal1 in prostate cancer.

Stably overexpressed hyaluronan synthases …

Multisensory Input To The Lateral Rostral Suprasylvian Sulcus (Lrss) In Ferret, Elizabeth Hagood Apr 2009

Multisensory Input To The Lateral Rostral Suprasylvian Sulcus (Lrss) In Ferret, Elizabeth Hagood

Theses and Dissertations

For the brain to construct a comprehensive percept of the sensory world, information from the different senses must converge onto individual neurons within the central nervous system. As a consequence, how these neurons convert convergent sensory input into multisensory information is an important question facing neuroscience today. Recent physiological studies have demonstrated the presence of a robust population of multisensory neurons in the lateral bank of the rostral suprasylvian sulcus (LRSS) in adult ferret (Keniston et al, 2008). The LRSS is a region situated between somatosensory and auditory cortices, where bimodal (somatosensory-auditory) neurons occupy the greatest percentage of the sensory-responsive …

Efficacy Of A Brief Intervention For Insomnia Among Psychiatric Outpatients, James Nile Wagley Apr 2009

Efficacy Of A Brief Intervention For Insomnia Among Psychiatric Outpatients, James Nile Wagley

Theses and Dissertations

Psychiatric patients are particularly affected by symptoms of insomnia. Because insomnia is often secondary to other conditions and was once thought to be less treatable, this condition has received little attention in terms of treatment and research. Additionally, psychiatric patients have typically fewer resources to seek treatment. Generally, insomnia is treated with medications that may have biological side effects and offer little restorative sleep. Behavioral or cognitive interventions have often been overlooked. This experiment uses profile analysis to test the hypothesis that psychiatric outpatients randomized to a treatment group would have decreased levels of sleep difficulties (measured by PSQI) when …

The Responses Of Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) To Hypoxia/Hypercapnia In Freshwater, James Martin Apr 2009

The Responses Of Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) To Hypoxia/Hypercapnia In Freshwater, James Martin

Theses and Dissertations

The present research examined respiratory responses of blue crabs to long term (4, 13, and 21 days) hypercapnic hypoxia in freshwater at 23 C. Hypoxic conditions (50-60 & 75-85 mmHg O2) were induced by allowing the crabs to consume their oxygen supply, resulting in a hypercapnic induced decrease in pH that remained through the exposure. Postbranchial hemolymph responses to hypoxia/hypercapnia in freshwater demonstrate decreases in PO2, increases in PCO2, and decreases in pH. Lactate levels decreased over time, but hemocyanin concentration was highly variable with no trends. PH, lactate, and hemocyanin observations also demonstrated high variability and a variety of …

The Presence Of Amphibian Ranavirus In Virginia Warm Water Fish Hatchery Ponds, Elizabeth Nelson Apr 2009

The Presence Of Amphibian Ranavirus In Virginia Warm Water Fish Hatchery Ponds, Elizabeth Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Amphibian declines have been occurring world wide over the past several decades. Infectious disease and environmental changes have been implicated as the causative agents in these declines. Fish stocking from hatcheries provides a unique opportunity for organisms, including infectious diseases, to travel over long distances. Ranavirus was previously found in two ponds at Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery in Charles City County, Virginia. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to determine if ranavirus is present in tadpoles from four warm water fish hatcheries in Virginia. A secondary objective of this study was to determine if there are relationships …

U2os Cells Lacking Chk1 Undergo Aberrant Mitosis And Fail To Activate The Spindle Checkpoint, Laura Carrassa, Yolanda Sanchez, Eugenio Erba, Giovanna Damia Apr 2009

U2os Cells Lacking Chk1 Undergo Aberrant Mitosis And Fail To Activate The Spindle Checkpoint, Laura Carrassa, Yolanda Sanchez, Eugenio Erba, Giovanna Damia

Dartmouth Scholarship

Chk1 is a conserved protein kinase originally identified in fission yeast, required to delay entry of cells with damaged or unreplicated DNA into mitosis. The requirement of Chk1 for both S and G2/M checkpoints has been elucidated while only few studies have connected Chk1 to the mitotic spindle checkpoint. We used a small interference RNA strategy to investigate the role of Chk1 in unstressed conditions. Chk1 depletion in U2OS human osteosarcoma cells inhibited cell proliferation and raised the percentage of cells with a 4N DNA content, which correlated with accumulation of giant polynucleated cells morphologically distinct from apoptotic cells, while …
