Providing For Rhode Islands Juvenile Delinquents: Community Based Services Vs. Incarceration, Shannon Fitzgerald

Social Work Theses

National research has shown that high quality, alternative community based diversionary programs for delinquent youth are both more effective at reducing recidivism and less expensive than incarceration. As the state of Rhode Island faces budgetary issues, not unlike the issues the United States is facing on the national level, they have begun to move toward this model as a way to address juvenile delinquency. But the question is, does Rhode Island have the available resources to provide a better alternative for these youths than incarceration? This exploratory study’s objective was to explore if Rhode Island’s juvenile delinquents will be better …

The Rotational Spectrum Of The Fed Radical In Its X4Δ State, Measured By Far-Infrared Laser Magnetic Resonance, Michael Jackson, Lyndon R. Zink, Jonathan P. Towle, Neil Riley, John M. Brown Apr 2009

The Rotational Spectrum Of The Fed Radical In Its X4Δ State, Measured By Far-Infrared Laser Magnetic Resonance, Michael Jackson, Lyndon R. Zink, Jonathan P. Towle, Neil Riley, John M. Brown

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Transitions between the spin-rotational levels of the FeD radical in the v = 0level of the X 4Δ ground state have been detected by the technique of laser magnetic resonance at far-infrared wavelengths. Pure-rotational transitions have been observed for the three lowest spin components. Lambda-type doubling is resolved on all the observed transitions; nuclear hyperfine structure is not observed. The energy levels of FeD are strongly affected by the breakdown of the Born–Oppenheimer approximation and cannot be modeled accurately by an effective Hamiltonian. The data are therefore fitted to an empirical formula to yield term values and g-factors for …

Unified Theory Of Gas Damping Of Flexible Microcantilevers At Low Ambient Pressures, Rahul Bidkar, Ryan Tung, Alina Alexeenko, Sumali Hartono, Arvind Raman Apr 2009

Unified Theory Of Gas Damping Of Flexible Microcantilevers At Low Ambient Pressures, Rahul Bidkar, Ryan Tung, Alina Alexeenko, Sumali Hartono, Arvind Raman

PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems

Predicting the gas damping of microcantilevers oscillating in different vibration modes in unbounded gas at low pressures is relevant for increasing the sensitivity of microcantilever-based sensors. While existing free-molecular theories are valid only at very high Knudsen numbers, continuum models are valid only at very low Knudsen numbers. We solve the quasisteady Boltzmann equation and compute a closed-form fit for gas damping of rectangular microcantilevers that is valid over four orders of magnitude of Knudsen numbers spanning the free-molecular, the transition, and the low pressure slip flow regimes. Experiments are performed using silicon microcantilevers under controlled pressures to validate the …

Same-Sex Social Behavior In Meadow Voles: Multiple And Rapid Formation Of Attachments, Annaliese K. Beery, David M. Routman, Irving Zucker

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Adult meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) are solitary in the spring–summer reproductive season, but during winter months, females and males are socially tolerant and aggregate in groups. This behavioral difference is triggered by day length: female meadow voles housed in short, winterlike day lengths form same-sex partner preferences, whereas those housed in long, summer-like day lengths are less social. The present study demonstrates that same-sex social attachments in short day lengths are not exclusive; females formed concurrent attachments with more than one individual, and with non-kin as well as siblings. Partner preferences between females were established within one day of cohousing …

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this work was to compare the risk of developing a second cancer after craniospinal irradiation using photon versus proton radiotherapy by means of simulation studies designed to account for the effects of neutron exposures. Craniospinal irradiation of a male phantom was calculated for passively-scattered and scanned-beam proton treatment units. Organ doses were estimated from treatment plans; for the proton treatments, the amount of stray radiation was calculated separately using the Monte Carlo method. The organ doses were converted to risk of cancer incidence using a standard formalism developed for radiation protection purposes. The total lifetime risk of …

Stray Radiation Dose And Second Cancer Risk For A Pediatric Patient Receiving Craniospinal Irradiation With Proton Beams, Phillip J. Taddei, Dragan Mirkovic, Jonas D. Fontenot, Annelise Giebeler, Yuanshui Zheng, David Kornguth, Radhe Mohan, Wayne D. Newhauser

Faculty Publications

Proton beam radiotherapy unavoidably exposes healthy tissue to stray radiation emanating from the treatment unit and secondary radiation produced within the patient. These exposures provide no known benefit and may increase a patient's risk of developing a radiogenic cancer. The aims of this study were to calculate doses to major organs and tissues and to estimate second cancer risk from stray radiation following craniospinal irradiation (CSI) with proton therapy. This was accomplished using detailed Monte Carlo simulations of a passive-scattering proton treatment unit and a voxelized phantom to represent the patient. Equivalent doses, effective dose and corresponding risk for developing …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Carcinogenicity of nickel compounds has been well documented. However, the carcinogenic effect of metallic nickel is still unclear. The present study investigates metallic nickel nano- and fine particle-induced apoptosis and the signal pathways involved in this process in JB6 cells. The data obtained from this study will be of benefit for elucidating the pathological and carcinogenic potential of metallic nickel particles.

RESULTS: Using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, we found that metallic nickel nanoparticles exhibited higher cytotoxicity than fine particles. Both metallic nickel nano- and fine particles induced JB6 cell apoptosis. Metallic nickel nanoparticles produced higher apoptotic induction than fine …

Inscriptive Masculinity In Balzac’S Comédie Humaine, Alana K. Eldrige Apr 2009

Inscriptive Masculinity In Balzac’S Comédie Humaine, Alana K. Eldrige

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This reading of La Comédie humaine traces the narrative paradigm of the young hero within Balzac’s literary universe. A dynamic literary signifier in nineteenth-century literature, the young hero epitomizes the problematic existence encountered by the individual in post-revolutionary France. At the same time, he serves as a mouth-piece for an entire youthful generation burdened by historical memory. Left to assert his position in a society devoid of legitimate authority, the young hero seeks avenues for historical self-creation. And, at every turn, he is reminded of the illegitimacy of his own position. The historical dead-end experienced by the young hero serves …

Generation Of Macrophage Chemotactic Factors By Spla2, Andria Chambers Apr 2009

Generation Of Macrophage Chemotactic Factors By Spla2, Andria Chambers

Theses and Dissertations

Removal of apoptotic cells by macrophages is required in order to prevent autoimmune responses. Previous studies have reported that group IIA secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) preferentially binds to apoptotic cells and induces a chemotactic factor which promotes the migration of macrophages to apoptotic cells. Based on these observations, we hypothesized that the pool of sPLA2 trapped on apoptotic cells produces chemoattractant lipids that recruit macrophages to phagocytose the apoptotic cells. To test this hypothesis, Jurkat cells were cultured under normal conditions and induced to undergo early apoptosis through treatment with D,L-threo-dihydrosphingosine. Live and early apoptotic cells were incubated with catalytically …

Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger Apr 2009

Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger

Senior Honors Theses

The past thirty years have marked the start of a new kind of civil war in our digitally powered American society. There is a deep chasm between the cry for the lost art of typography and the mediated power of the Image. We are a culture battling a war in our own heads, attempting to assimilate Images without replacing the need for a written text.

This thesis will argue that the mediated Image is not a death sentence to critical thinking; rather it is an undeniable, inescapable power that can be used to positively influence our culture. It will research …

Role Of Bcl-2 Family Members To Promote Glucocorticoid –Induced Apoptosis By Mek Inhibitors In Leukemic Cells, Anila Rambal Apr 2009

Role Of Bcl-2 Family Members To Promote Glucocorticoid –Induced Apoptosis By Mek Inhibitors In Leukemic Cells, Anila Rambal

Theses and Dissertations

Glucocorticoids (GC) are common components of many chemotherapeutic regimens for lymphoid malignancies. GC-induced apoptosis involves an intrinsic BCL-2 family-regulated pathway. It has been shown that BIM (BCL-2 interacting mediator of cell death), a BH3-only pro-apoptotic protein, is up-regulated by dexamethasone (Dex) treatment in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. Furthermore, BIM is inactivated by extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-mediated phosphorylation. We therefore hypothesized co-treatment with Dex and MEK/ERK inhibitors would promote apoptosis in ALL cells through BIM up-regulation and activation. We show here that a MEK inhibitor, PD184352 synergistically enhances Dex lethality in CCRF-CEM (T-ALL) cells. Co-treatment with Dex and PD184352 results …

Quaternions, Octonions, And The Quantization Of Games, Aden Omar Ahmed Apr 2009

Quaternions, Octonions, And The Quantization Of Games, Aden Omar Ahmed

Dissertations and Theses

We present an effect on classical games that is obtained by replacing the notion of probability distribution with the notions of quantum superposition and measurement. Our particular focus will be on two and three player games where each player has precisely two pure strategic choices. Games in normal form are represented as "payoff" functions.

Game quantization requires the extension of these functions to much larger domains. The main result of this work is the co-ordinatization of these extended functions by either the quaternions or octonions in order to obtain computationally friendly versions of these functions. This computational capability is then …

Phylogeography Of The Rufous-Naped Wren (Campylorhynchus Rufinucha): Speciation And Hybridization In Mesoamerica, Hernan Vazquez-Miranda, Adolfo G. Navarro-Siguenza, Kevin E. Omland

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Rufous-naped Wren (Campylorhynchus rufinucha) is a sedentary, morphologically variable species distributed in the dry forests of Mesoamerica. It ranges from Colima, Mexico, south to Costa Rica along the Pacific slope, with a disjunct population in central Veracruz. Populations of two forms on the Pacific slope intergrade in Chiapas, Mexico, apparently as a result of secondary contact. We sequenced a mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene to explore phylogeographic patterns and hybridization. We found three divergent lineages, two geographically spanning the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and a disjunct Veracruz population. Analyses of molecular variation and statistics are consistent with genetically distinct …

Dynamic Universal Accumulators For Ddh Groups And Their Application To Attribute-Based Anonymous Credential Systems, Man Ho Au, Patrick P. Tsang, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu Apr 2009

Dynamic Universal Accumulators For Ddh Groups And Their Application To Attribute-Based Anonymous Credential Systems, Man Ho Au, Patrick P. Tsang, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present the first dynamic universal accumulator that allows (1) the accumulation of elements in a DDH-hard group G and (2) one who knows x such that y=g^x has --- or has not --- been accumulated, where g generates G, to efficiently prove her knowledge of such x in zero knowledge, and hence without revealing, e.g., x or y. We introduce the Attribute-Based Anonymous Credential System (ABACS), which allows the verifier to authenticate anonymous users according to any access control policy expressible as a formula of possibly negated boolean user attributes. We construct the system from our accumulator.
