Constraints On The Utility Of Mno2 Cartridge Method For The Extraction Of Radionuclides: A Case Study Using 234Th, M. Baskaran, P. W. Swarzenski, B. A. Biddanda

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Large volume (102–103 L) seawater samples are routinely processed to investigate the partitioning of particle reactive radionuclides and Ra between solution and size-fractionated suspended particulate matter. One of the most frequently used methods to preconcentrate these nuclides from such large volumes involves extraction onto three filter cartridges (a prefilter for particulate species and two MnO2-coated filters for dissolved species) connected in series. This method assumes that the extraction efficiency is uniform for both MnO2-coated cartridges, that no dissolved species are removed by the prefilter, and that any adsorbed radionuclides are not desorbed from …

Developing A Teachers' Handbook For Content-Based Instruction At Brigham Young University's English Language Center, Melinda Clement Hardman Apr 2009

Developing A Teachers' Handbook For Content-Based Instruction At Brigham Young University's English Language Center, Melinda Clement Hardman

Theses and Dissertations

In Winter semester of 2005 the English Language Center (ELC) began plans to implement a content-based program for students at its highest proficiency level in order to provide them with more effective preparation for academic studies in English. Since that time, the program has undergone various changes to provide a more stable, cohesive, and responsive curriculum. There is a need, however, for greater teacher support and training. This paper outlines the process I underwent to create a handbook that would provide needed guidance and training for teachers in this program. This project involved an in-depth needs analysis of teachers and …

Consequences Of Shrub Encroachment: Linking Changes In Canopy Structure To Shifts In The Resource Environment, Steven Brantley Apr 2009

Consequences Of Shrub Encroachment: Linking Changes In Canopy Structure To Shifts In The Resource Environment, Steven Brantley

Theses and Dissertations

Shrub expansion in herbaceous ecosystems is emerging as an important ecological response to global change, especially in mesic systems where increases in canopy biomass are greatest. Two consequences of woody encroachment are increases in belowground resources, such as carbon and nitrogen, and reductions in above-ground resources such as light, which affect diversity, community trajectory, and ecosystem function. My objective was to determine how expansion of the nitrogen-fixing shrub Morella cerifera affected the resource environment across a chronosequence of shrub expansion on a Virginia barrier island. I quantified changes in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling, canopy structure and understory light …

Elemental Composition And Nutrient Effect On The Uptake And Metabolism Of Dissolved Organic Carbon By Bacteria From A Temperate Region River, Anne Stuart Apr 2009

Elemental Composition And Nutrient Effect On The Uptake And Metabolism Of Dissolved Organic Carbon By Bacteria From A Temperate Region River, Anne Stuart

Theses and Dissertations

Rivers are arteries that connect land and sea, and provide a conduit and reactor for allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon sources (OC) delivered to the coastal ocean. In comparison to marine waters, inland waters quantitatively represent only a fraction of the marine system; however, their importance to global C cycling maybe disproportional to its actual size. Inland systems are subject to multiple sources of OC (autochthonous and allochthonous) that vary individually in space and time with respect to their concentration and potential bacterial bioavailability. This study investigates the impact of high and ambient inorganic nutrient concentrations on the bacterial bioavailability …

Sorghum Grain Mold: Sustainable Pest Management Strategies, Intsormil Apr 2009

Sorghum Grain Mold: Sustainable Pest Management Strategies, Intsormil

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Global losses due to grain mold are estimated to be $130 million annually. Sorghum grain mold is caused by a complex of fungal species, the most important being Fusarium thapsinum and Curvularia lunata. An additional 25 fungal genera are secondary invaders. Grain mold reduces the quantity of food available, as the fungus consumes a portion of the grain, and reduces the quality and economic value of what remains by producing pigments and toxins that make the grain less palatable and nutritious. Fusarium spp. and the secondarily invading Aspergillus spp. may produce toxins such as aflatoxins (a highly carcinogenic and …

Evaluation Of Statistical Methods For Normalization And Differential Expression In Mrna-Seq Experiments, James H. Bullard, Elizabeth A. Purdom, Kasper D. Hansen, Sandrine Dudoit

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The focus of this article is on the design and analysis of mRNA-Seq experiments, with the aim of inferring transcript levels and identifying differentially expressed genes. We investigate two mRNA-Seq datasets obtained using Illumina's Genome Analyzer platform to measure transcript levels in reference samples considered in the MicroArray Quality Control (MAQC) Project. We address the following four main issues: (1) exploratory data analysis for mapped reads, relating read counts to variables describing input samples and genomic regions of interest; (2) assessment and quantitation of biological effects (e.g., expression levels in Brain vs. UHR) and nuisance experimental effects (e.g., library preparation, …

Nonlinear Tube-Fitting For The Analysis Of Anatomical And Functional Structures, Jeff Goldsmith, Brian S. Caffo, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Daniel Reich, Yong Du, Craig Hendrix Apr 2009

Nonlinear Tube-Fitting For The Analysis Of Anatomical And Functional Structures, Jeff Goldsmith, Brian S. Caffo, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Daniel Reich, Yong Du, Craig Hendrix

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We are concerned with the estimation of the exterior surface of tube-shaped anatomical structures. This interest is motivated by two distinct scientific goals, one dealing with the distribution of HIV microbicide in the colon and the other with measuring degradation in white-matter tracts in the brain. Our problem is posed as the estimation of the support of a distribution in three dimensions from a sample from that distribution, possibly measured with error. We propose a novel tube-fitting algorithm to construct such estimators. Further, we conduct a simulation study to aid in the choice of a key parameter of the algorithm, …

Gene Set Enrichment Analysis Made Simple, Rafael A. Irizarry, Chi Wang, Yun Zhou, Terence P. Speed Apr 2009

Gene Set Enrichment Analysis Made Simple, Rafael A. Irizarry, Chi Wang, Yun Zhou, Terence P. Speed

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Among the many applications of microarray technology, one of the most popular is the identification of genes that are differentially expressed in two conditions. A common statistical approach is to quantify the interest of each gene with a p-value, adjust these p-values for multiple comparisons, chose an appropriate cut-off, and create a list of candidate genes. This approach has been criticized for ignoring biological knowledge regarding how genes work together. Recently a series of methods, that do incorporate biological knowledge, have been proposed. However, many of these methods seem overly complicated. Furthermore, the most popular method, Gene Set Enrichment Analysis …

The Elderly: A Descriptive Study Of The Perceptions Of The Elderly And Their Driving Abilities, Kimberly Pine

Social Work Theses

This study advances the understanding of older driver’s perceptions on their driving abilities. It focuses on examining a deeper and more detailed understanding of the different challenges the elderly are experiencing, in respect to driving and retention of their license. Additionally, it is important for others (such as family, doctors, social workers etc.) to interact with the elderly and assist them in receiving services if they are no longer capable of driving a vehicle, as well as talk with them if they are struggling with giving up their license and consequently their independence. Specifically, the analysis focuses on which gender …

An Exploration Of Morale And Decision Making Of Children And Youths In Foster And Residential Care, Kevin Stanford Apr 2009

An Exploration Of Morale And Decision Making Of Children And Youths In Foster And Residential Care, Kevin Stanford

Social Work Theses

Children who are forced into foster or residential care are one of the most vulnerable populations in the United States. Many of these children have not had the benefit of a positive adult role model in their lives and therefore lack social skills and self-esteem often resulting in criminal activity. Previous research indicates various positive and negative influences on morale and decision making of children and youths in both of these populations. This study aims to build upon previous research in an attempt to improve the lives of youths in foster and residential care by further delving into the influences …

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2008, Frederick T. Short Apr 2009

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2008, Frederick T. Short

PREP Reports & Publications

Eelgrass in the Great Bay Estuary in 2008 was found only in the Great Bay itself and Portsmouth Harbor. In 2008 there was a continued loss of eelgrass biomass in the Estuary. Virtually all the eelgrass in Little Bay and the Piscataqua River has died. Eelgrass in Great Bay itself experienced an increase in distribution from 2007 to 2008, primarily from the re-seeding of bare areas that had been de-vegetated by nuisance algae in previous years. However, Great Bay showed a decrease in eelgrass biomass in 2008. Portsmouth and Little Harbors experienced a slight decrease in both distribution and cover …

Structural Basis For Inhibition Of Mammalian Adenylyl Cyclase By Calcium, Tung-Chung Mou, Nanako Masada, Dermot M. Cooper, Stephen R. Sprang Apr 2009

Structural Basis For Inhibition Of Mammalian Adenylyl Cyclase By Calcium, Tung-Chung Mou, Nanako Masada, Dermot M. Cooper, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Type V and VI mammalian adenylyl cyclases (AC5, AC6) are inhibited by Ca(2+) at both sub- and supramicromolar concentration. This inhibition may provide feedback in situations where cAMP promotes opening of Ca(2+) channels, allowing fine control of cardiac contraction and rhythmicity in cardiac tissue where AC5 and AC6 predominate. Ca(2+) inhibits the soluble AC core composed of the C1 domain of AC5 (VC1) and the C2 domain of AC2 (IIC2). As observed for holo-AC5, inhibition is biphasic, showing "high-affinity" (K(i) = approximately 0.4 microM) and "low-affinity" (K(i) = approximately 100 microM) modes of inhibition. At micromolar concentration, Ca(2+) inhibition is …

Schedule H: New Community Benefit Reporting Requirements For Hospitals, Eileen Salinsky Apr 2009

Schedule H: New Community Benefit Reporting Requirements For Hospitals, Eileen Salinsky

National Health Policy Forum

In recent years, some policymakers have questioned whether not-for-profit hospitals benefit the communities they serve at a level commensurate with the tax exemptions they receive as charitable organizations. This background paper reviews the new community benefit reporting requirements hospitals will face in 2009 under Schedule H of the Internal Revenue Service's revised Form 990 (the return used by organizations exempt from federal income tax). The paper provides a descriptive summary of the quantitative and qualitative information to be reported on Schedule H, such as charity care, bad debt, and the unreimbursed costs of Medicaid and Medicare.

Static And Dynamic Responsive Behavior Of Polyelectrolyte Brushes Under External Electrical Field, Hui Ouyang, Zhenhai Xia, Jiang Zhe Apr 2009

Static And Dynamic Responsive Behavior Of Polyelectrolyte Brushes Under External Electrical Field, Hui Ouyang, Zhenhai Xia, Jiang Zhe

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The static and dynamic behaviors of partially charged and end-grafted polyelectrolyte brushes in response to electric fields were investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the polymer brushes can be partially or fully stretched by applying an external electric field. Moreover, the brushes can switch reversibly from collapsed to stretched states, fully responding to the AC electric stimuli, and the gating response frequency can reach a few hundred MHz. The effects of the grafting density, the charge fraction of the brushes and the strength of the electric field on the average height of the polymer brushes …
