A Comparison Of Dental Practitioners' Knowledge Of The Adverse Oral Effects Of Pharmaceuticals; Specifically, Low-Dose Methotrexate, Diltiazem, Cyclosporine, Istretinoin, And Lisinopril, Melissa Van Witzenburg Jul 2009

A Comparison Of Dental Practitioners' Knowledge Of The Adverse Oral Effects Of Pharmaceuticals; Specifically, Low-Dose Methotrexate, Diltiazem, Cyclosporine, Istretinoin, And Lisinopril, Melissa Van Witzenburg

Dental Hygiene ETDs

There are more than 15, 000 approved prescription and over-the-counter drugs, diagnostics, and intravenous supplementation products in the United States. Due to the increased number of patients using medications it is important that dental providers are aware of common adverse oral complications. The most commonly seen adverse oral effects of medications are xerostomia, gingival hypertrophy, angular cheilitis, and mucositis. The purpose of this study was to examine dental providers, subjects' knowledge of adverse oral effects of low-dose methotrexate, diltiazem, cyclosporine, isotretinoin, and lisinopril. Four of the five hypotheses tested demonstrated high P-values, therefore; they were consistent with the null hypothesis. …

Reactivity-Dependent Pcr: Direct, Solution-Phase In Vitro Selection For Bond Formation, David J. Gorin, Adam S. Kamlet, David R. Liu Jul 2009

Reactivity-Dependent Pcr: Direct, Solution-Phase In Vitro Selection For Bond Formation, David J. Gorin, Adam S. Kamlet, David R. Liu

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

(Figure Presented) In vitro selection is a key component of efforts to discover functional nucleic acids and small molecules from libraries of DNA, RNA, and DNA-encoded small molecules. Such selections have been widely used to evolve RNA and DNA catalysts and, more recently, to discover new reactions from DNA-encoded libraries of potential substrates. While effective, current strategies for selections of bond-forming and bond-cleaving reactivity are generally indirect, require the synthesis of biotin-linked substrates, and involve multiple solution-phase and solid-phase manipulations. In this work we report the successful development and validation of reactivity-dependent PCR (RDPCR), a new method that more directly …

Eligibility For Organ Donation: A Medico-Legal Perspective On Defining And Determining Death, Jocelyn Downie, Matthew R. Kutcher, Chantelle Rajotte, Alison Shea Jul 2009

Eligibility For Organ Donation: A Medico-Legal Perspective On Defining And Determining Death, Jocelyn Downie, Matthew R. Kutcher, Chantelle Rajotte, Alison Shea

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Purpose: In the context of post-mortem organ donation, there is an obvious need for certainty regarding the legal definition and determination of death, as individuals must be legally pronounced dead before organs may be procured for donation. Surprisingly then, the legal situation in Canada with regard to the definition and determination of death is uncertain. The purpose of this review is to provide anesthesiologists and critical care specialists with a medico-legal perspective regarding the definition and determination of death (particularly as it relates to non-heart-beating donor protocols) and to contribute to ongoing improvement in policies, protocols, and practices in this …

Hardiness, Well-Being, And Health: A Meta-Analytic Summary Of Three Decades Of Research, Celina Marie Oliver Jul 2009

Hardiness, Well-Being, And Health: A Meta-Analytic Summary Of Three Decades Of Research, Celina Marie Oliver

Dissertations and Theses

In recent decades, as scientific understanding regarding the effects of stress on health and well-being has grown, researchers have shown increasing interest in personal factors such as hardiness that may enhance one's ability to remain resilient under stressful conditions. Hardiness is a complex trait composed of three components (commitment, control, and challenge) that combine synergistically to increase stress tolerance. Over time, a large and complex body of research has accumulated, and while many qualitative reviews have been conducted, quantitative summaries remain rare. This study provides an empirical synthesis of research findings examining the relationships between hardiness and correlates related to …

The Role Of Smpb In The Early Stages Of Trans-Translation, Deanna June Cazier Jul 2009

The Role Of Smpb In The Early Stages Of Trans-Translation, Deanna June Cazier

Theses and Dissertations

Ribosomes stall on defective messenger RNA transcripts in eubacteria. Without a mechanism to release stalled ribosomes, these cells would die. Transfer-messenger RNA (tmRNA) and small protein B (SmpB) reactivate stalled ribosomes in a process known as trans-translation. Together, tmRNA and SmpB mimic alanyl-tRNA, entering the A site of stalled ribosomes and accepting transfer of the stalled polypeptide. A portion of tmRNA is then positioned as a template for the ribosome to resume translating. The tmRNA open reading frame encodes a proteolysis tag to mark the aberrant polypeptide for degradation and a stop codon to release the ribosome. How are tmRNA …

Synthesis, Characterization And Fluorescence Performance Of Laf3:Ce3+ Nanocrystals, Fan Yang Jul 2009

Synthesis, Characterization And Fluorescence Performance Of Laf3:Ce3+ Nanocrystals, Fan Yang

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Fluorescent labeling agents have greatly affected many biological applications in recent years. Among different types of labeling agents, Cerium-doped LaF3 nanocrystals (NCs) are considered to be a promising new class of luminescent materials. Usually, lanthanide-doped nanocrystals production entails the use of ligands and high-temperature, which limits their biological applications and lowers their processability. This thesis proposes a simple and affordable synthesis of water-soluble LaF3: Ce doped nanocrystals without using ligands and at low temperatures. Dispersion of the nanoparticles was carried out in three different solvents including methanol, distilled-water and DI-chitosan. The effects of different levels of dopant on the particle …

Time Course Of Vascular Function Changes Following An Acute Maximal Exercise Bout In Obese And Normal Weight Males, R. Lee Franco Jul 2009

Time Course Of Vascular Function Changes Following An Acute Maximal Exercise Bout In Obese And Normal Weight Males, R. Lee Franco

Theses and Dissertations

One of the earliest sub-clinical stages associated with atherosclerosis is endothelial dysfunction (ED), which has been shown to predict future cardiovascular events. Chronic exercise is thought to improve endothelium-dependent vasodilation; however, few studies have evaluated the effects of acute exercise on vascular function (VF). Moreover, studies evaluating ED following an exercise training program lack a standardized time frame in which to measure VF. Although most studies require subjects to abstain from exercise for 24 hours prior to any VF measure, no study to date has assessed VF longer than 24 hours after the cessation of exercise. Additionally, no studies have …

Design And Synthesis Of Substituted 1,4-Hydrazine-Linked Piperazine-2,5- And 2,6-Diones And 2,5-Terpyrimidinylenes As Α-Helical Mimetics, Laura Anderson Jul 2009

Design And Synthesis Of Substituted 1,4-Hydrazine-Linked Piperazine-2,5- And 2,6-Diones And 2,5-Terpyrimidinylenes As Α-Helical Mimetics, Laura Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The most common secondary structure of proteins is the alpha-helix. The alpha-helix can be involved in various protein-protein interactions (PPIs) through the recognition of three or more side chains along one face of the alpha-helix (Wells and McClendon, 2007). In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the development of peptidic and non-peptidic compounds that bind to PPI surfaces. We focused on the design and synthesis of compounds that mimic the orientation of side chain residues of an alpha-helical protein domain. Although our scaffolds could potentially inhibit various PPIs, we focused mainly on the disruption of interactions among …

Triangulation Process: An Examination Of Differentiation And Family Stress As Indicated By Bowen, Michael Robert Whitehead Jul 2009

Triangulation Process: An Examination Of Differentiation And Family Stress As Indicated By Bowen, Michael Robert Whitehead

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the Bowenian notion that triangulation is precipitated by the interaction between a person's level of differentiation-of-self and the amount of chronic familial emotional anxiety. Another aspect of this study was to examine the relationship between marital quality and child triangulation. The sample for this study was taken from the Flourishing Families project and included only the families that indicated marriage as their relationship status, resulting in a total of 336 families with a target child between the ages of 11 and 14. Initial bivariate analysis indicated that differentiation-of-self, and family stress would be associated with child triangulation. …

Literary Case Histories And Medical Narratives In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Travis Wade Austin Jul 2009

Literary Case Histories And Medical Narratives In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Travis Wade Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Literature and medicine are not usually seen as related disciplines, but scholars have already begun producing fruitful scholarship regarding historical and aesthetic interactions between them. This thesis adds to that scholarship by examining medicine and literature in nineteenth-century Britain. More specifically, Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium-Eater and Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde both use nineteenth-century medical case conventions to tell their stories. Furthermore, because both works deal with addiction, divided selves, and the power that physical substances can have on morality and character, these two works provide an excellent comparison coming …

Zero-Inflated Censored Regression Models: An Application With Episode Of Care Data, Jonathan P. Prasad Jul 2009

Zero-Inflated Censored Regression Models: An Application With Episode Of Care Data, Jonathan P. Prasad

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this project is to fit a sequence of increasingly complex zero-inflated censored regression models to a known data set. It is quite common to find censored count data in statistical analyses of health-related data. Modeling such data while ignoring the censoring, zero-inflation, and overdispersion often results in biased parameter estimates. This project develops various regression models that can be used to predict a count response variable that is affected by various predictor variables. The regression parameters are estimated with Bayesian analysis using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. The tests for model adequacy are discussed and …

A Method For Predicting Citations To The Scientific Publications Of Individual Researchers, Peter Z. Revesz Jul 2009

A Method For Predicting Citations To The Scientific Publications Of Individual Researchers, Peter Z. Revesz

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Any researcher’s publications at any time can be ordered from the highest cited to the lowest cited, yielding a citation curve. We describe a novel method for predicting citation curves of researchers in the future. The method depends on treating the citation curves of researchers for various years as one single spatio-temporal function from rank and time to citations. For each researcher, we derive an estimate of this spatio-temporal function that can be used to predict the total citations of individual publications at any given rank at any time. Experiments show that this method can accurately predict entire citation curves …

Genomic And Systems Evolution In Vibrionaceae Species, Jianying Gu, Jennifer Neary, Hong Cai, Audrey Moshfeghian, Stephen A. Rodriguez, Timothy G. Lilburn, Yufeng Wang Jul 2009

Genomic And Systems Evolution In Vibrionaceae Species, Jianying Gu, Jennifer Neary, Hong Cai, Audrey Moshfeghian, Stephen A. Rodriguez, Timothy G. Lilburn, Yufeng Wang

Publications and Research

Background The steadily increasing number of prokaryotic genomes has accelerated the study of genome evolution; in particular, the availability of sets of genomes from closely related bacteria has facilitated the exploration of the mechanisms underlying genome plasticity. The family Vibrionaceae is found in the Gammaproteobacteria and is abundant in aquatic environments. Taxa from the family Vibrionaceae are diversified in their life styles; some species are free living, others are symbiotic, and others are human pathogens. This diversity makes this family a useful set of model organisms for studying bacterial evolution. This evolution is driven by several forces, among them gene …

Russian Parenting: Interactions With Relational Aggression Over Time, Emily Kim Keister Jul 2009

Russian Parenting: Interactions With Relational Aggression Over Time, Emily Kim Keister

Theses and Dissertations

The current study considers Russian parenting (psychological control) and child relational aggression across a decade. We used parent and child driven path analyses to test whether peer-directed and romantic relational aggression is associated with psychological control both concurrently as well as longitudinally. Using AMOS, parent and child driven models were compared and the parent driven models were found to have more significant concurrent and longitudinal linkages. Maternal psychological control was significantly stable over time; relational aggression was also stable over time for girls. Maternal psychological control at Time 1 was associated with relational aggression for girls at Time 1 and …

Complexity In Water And Carbon Dioxide Fluxes Following Rain Pulses In An African Savanna, Christopher A. Williams, Niall Hanan, Robert J. Scholes, Werner Kutsch Jul 2009

Complexity In Water And Carbon Dioxide Fluxes Following Rain Pulses In An African Savanna, Christopher A. Williams, Niall Hanan, Robert J. Scholes, Werner Kutsch

Geography

The idea that many processes in arid and semi-arid ecosystems are dormant until activated by a pulse of rainfall, and then decay from a maximum rate as the soil dries, is widely used as a conceptual and mathematical model, but has rarely been evaluated with data. This paper examines soil water, evapotranspiration (ET), and net ecosystem CO2 exchange measured for 5 years at an eddy covariance tower sited in an Acacia-Combretum savanna near Skukuza in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. The analysis characterizes ecosystem flux responses to discrete rain events and evaluates the skill of increasingly complex "pulse models". …

Numerical Solutions For Stochastic Differential Equations And Some Examples, Yi Luo Jul 2009

Numerical Solutions For Stochastic Differential Equations And Some Examples, Yi Luo

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I will study the qualitative properties of solutions of stochastic differential equations arising in applications by using the numerical methods. It contains two parts. In the first part, I will first review some of the basic theory of the stochastic calculus and the Ito-Taylor expansion for stochastic differential equations (SDEs). Then I will discuss some numerical schemes that come from the Ito-Taylor expansion including their order of convergence. In the second part, I will use some schemes to solve the stochastic Duffing equation, the stochastic Lorenz equation, the stochastic pendulum equation, and the stochastic equations which model …

Video-Rate Near Infrared Tomography To Image Pulsatile Absorption Properties In Thick Tissue, Zhiqiu Li, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Scott C. Davis, Subhadra Srinivasan, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue Jul 2009

Video-Rate Near Infrared Tomography To Image Pulsatile Absorption Properties In Thick Tissue, Zhiqiu Li, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Scott C. Davis, Subhadra Srinivasan, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

A high frame-rate near-infrared (NIR) tomography system was created to allow transmission imaging of thick tissues with spectral encoding for parallel source implementation. The design was created to maximize tissue penetration through up to 10 cm of tissue, allowing eventual use in human imaging. Eight temperature-controlled laser diodes (LD) are used in parallel with 1.5 nm shifts in their lasing wavelengths. Simultaneous detection is achieved with eight high-resolution, CCD-based spectrometers that were synchronized to detect the intensities and decode their source locations from the spectrum. Static and dynamic imaging is demonstrated through a 64 mm tissue-equivalent phantom, with acquisition rates …

Production Of O2 Herzberg States In The Deep Uv Photodissociation Of Ozone, Reinhard Schinke, George C. Mcbane, L. Shen, P. C. Singh, A. G. Suits

Peer Reviewed Articles

High-resolution imaging experiments combined with new electronic structure and dynamics calculations strongly indicate that the O(3P)+O2 products with very low kinetic energy release (Etr2: A' 3Δu(v=0, 1, 2) and A 3Σ+u(v=0, 1). This interpretation contradicts the earlier assignment to very high (v≥26) vibrational states of O2(3Σ-g).
