Dartmouth Scholarship
Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) is a major regulator of developmental, pathological, and therapeutic angiogenesis. Its activity is partially mediated by binding to syndecan 4 (S4), a proteoglycan receptor. Angiogenesis requires polarized activation of the small guanosine triphosphatase Rac1, which involves localized dissociation from RhoGDI1 and association with the plasma membrane. Previous work has shown that genetic deletion of S4 or its adapter, synectin, leads to depolarized Rac activation, decreased endothelial migration, and other physiological defects. In this study, we show that Rac1 activation downstream of S4 is mediated by the RhoG activation pathway. RhoG is maintained in an inactive …

The Grass Seed Pathogen Pyrenophora Semeniperda As A Biocontrol Agent For Annual Brome Grasses, Thomas E. Stewart
The Grass Seed Pathogen Pyrenophora Semeniperda As A Biocontrol Agent For Annual Brome Grasses, Thomas E. Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
Bromus tectorum and other annual brome grasses have invaded many ecosystems of the western United States, and because of an annual-grass influenced alteration of the natural fire cycle on arid western range lands near monocultures are created and conditions in which the native vegetation cannot compete are established. Each year thousands of hectares become near monocultures of annual brome grasses. Pyrenophora semeniperda, a generalist seed pathogen of annual grasses, shows major potential as a possible mycoherbicide that could help in reducing the monocultures created by annual grasses. The purpose of this research was to identify the requirements for isolating …
Trauma, Attachment, And Family Therapy With Grandfamilies: A Model For Treatment, Deena D. Strong, Roy A. Bean, Leslie L. Feinauer
Trauma, Attachment, And Family Therapy With Grandfamilies: A Model For Treatment, Deena D. Strong, Roy A. Bean, Leslie L. Feinauer
Faculty Publications
Population estimates indicate that approximately 1.5 million children are in grandparent-headed households without any parents present. This type of grandfamily is often created when biological parents are unable or unwilling to care for their children. Trauma is often experienced as a precursor to, or a consequence of, the biological parents' inability or unwillingness to care for their children. The well-being of both grandparent and grandchild may be affected in grandfamilies. A treatment model is presented that integrates trauma, attachment, and family systems theories and proposes that healing is facilitated through the emerging attachment between the grandparent and grandchild.

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
In this research project, the author presents a curriculum for a Philosophy 101 college course that implements active learning techniques to enhance and motivate student learning. Teaching introductory philosophy is a difficult task due to the intricate nature of the subject matter. Teachers must discover instructional strategies that transmit philosophical knowledge more effectively beyond the employment of traditional teaching methods, such as a lecture, to their students. Based on this author's research, active learning methods can provide an effective instructional technique for those who teach introductory philosophy courses. The curriculum in Chapter 4 provides a framework for teachers to implement …

Management Of Hypothalamic/Chiasmatic Astrocytomas In Children, Peter Amenta Md
Management Of Hypothalamic/Chiasmatic Astrocytomas In Children, Peter Amenta Md
JHN Journal
The management of pediatric hypothalamic/chiasmatic gliomas is currently a controversial issue within the fields of pediatric neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, and radiation oncology. These discrepancies have provided the fuel for a retrospective study I am currently performing in an attempt to link treatment modalities and long-term outcome. The common thread driving the inconsistencies in care is that the natural history of pediatric hypothalamic/chiasmatic gliomas is erratic and difficult to predict. The literature shows a wide range of outcomes ranging from rapid progression of disease to indolence over years and in some instances spontaneous regression. A 1995 paper describes the standard approach to …

Foundations In Neurological Surgery, Ashwini Sharan Md
JHN Journal
Continuously searching for ways to improve resident education, Dr. Ashwini Sharan has begun a series of classes for residents. Each class is a one-day session focused on a specific set of techniques that the resident will need competency in. Using a traditional class format means that each resident is not only drilled on specific skills, but also gets to learn from his fellow students - and future colleagues- by observing them perform the same tasks. The Congress of Neurological Surgeons conference has similar workshops where practicing neurosurgeons can get familiarity with new tools. These classes are intended to ensure that …
Dynamics Of Wind-Driven Upwelling And Relaxation Between Monterey Bay And Point Arena: Local-, Regional-, And Gyre-Scale Controls, James M. Pringle, Edward P. Dever
Dynamics Of Wind-Driven Upwelling And Relaxation Between Monterey Bay And Point Arena: Local-, Regional-, And Gyre-Scale Controls, James M. Pringle, Edward P. Dever
Earth Sciences
In north and central California, equatorward winds drive equatorward flows and the upwelling of cold dense water over the shelf during the midspring and summer upwelling season. When the winds temporarily weaken, the upwelling flows between Point Reyes and Point Arena "relax,'' becoming strongly poleward over the shelf. Analytical and numerical models are used to describe the effect of alongshore variability of winds, bathymetry, and basin-scale pressure gradients on the strength of upwelling and its relaxation. Alongshore winds weaken to the south of Point Reyes, and the shelf becomes narrower from Point Reyes to Monterey Bay. Both of these lead …

Distinctive Interactions Of The Arabidopsis Homolog Of The 30 Kd Subunit Of The Cleavage And Polyadenylation Specificity Factor (Atcpsf30) With Other Polyadenylation Factor Subunits, Suryadevara Rao, Randy D. Dinkins, Arthur G. Hunt
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: The Arabidopsis ortholog of the 30 kD subunit of the mammalian Cleavage and Polyadenylation Specificity Factor (AtCPSF30) is an RNA-binding endonuclease that is associated with other Arabidopsis CPSF subunits (orthologs of the 160, 100, and 73 kD subunits of CPSF). In order to further explore the functions of AtCPSF30, the subcellular distribution of the protein was examined by over-expressing fusion proteins containing fluorescent reporters linked to different CPSF subunits.
RESULTS: It was found that AtCPSF30 by itself localizes, not to the nucleus, but to the cytoplasm. AtCPSF30 could be found in the nucleus when co-expressed with AtCPSF160 or AtCPSF73(I), …

Habitat-Based Intraguild Predation By Caribbean Reef Octopus Octopus Briareus On Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Mark J. Butler Iv, Jennifer A. Lear
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Intraguild predation occurs when species simultaneously compete for resources and interact as predator and prey, which describes the interaction between juvenile Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus and Caribbean reef octopus Octopus briareus in the Florida Keys, USA. Octopuses are notorious predators of decapod crustaceans, and their use of crevice shelters suggests that they may also compete for shelter with their lobster prey. Lobsters use mainly chemical cues to detect and avoid octopus, so we hypothesized that the negative association between these species may be as much the consequence of avoidance of a superior competitor as it is of direct predation. …
Addressing The Unforgettable Killer In A Forgetful Mind: A Look Into The Advances Of Treating Alzheimer's Disease, Heather Tews
Addressing The Unforgettable Killer In A Forgetful Mind: A Look Into The Advances Of Treating Alzheimer's Disease, Heather Tews
Honors Theses
The world's population is getting older. Modern science has ensured that people are living longer and healthier lives. However, as the world ages, there is a looming epidemic of Alzheimer's disease promising to surface at any time. Currently, there are almost 30 million cases of Alzheimer's disease worldwide, and that number is only increasing. It is predicted that by 2050, that number will quadruple, and that 1 out of every 85 people will be living with Alzheimer's (Brookmeyer, Johnson, Ziegler-Graham & Arrighi, 2007). This disease kills about 100,000 people each year, which makes it the fourth leading cause of adult …

Background: The Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor) is an important insect pest of wheat. It has tractable genetics, polytene chromosomes, and a small genome (158 Mb). Investigation of the Hessian fly presents excellent opportunities to study plant-insect interactions and the molecular mechanisms underlying genome imprinting and chromosome elimination. A physical map is needed to improve the ability to perform both positional cloning and comparative genomic analyses with the fully sequenced genomes of other dipteran species. Results: An FPC-based genome wide physical map of the Hessian fly was constructed and anchored to the insect's polytene chromosomes. Bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones corresponding …
Meta-Analysis Using Bayesian Hierarchical Models In Organizational Behavior, Michael David Ulrich
Meta-Analysis Using Bayesian Hierarchical Models In Organizational Behavior, Michael David Ulrich
Theses and Dissertations
Meta-analysis is a tool used to combine the results from multiple studies into one comprehensive analysis. First developed in the 1970s, meta-analysis is a major statistical method in academic, medical, business, and industrial research. There are three traditional ways in which a meta-analysis is conducted: fixed or random effects, and using an empirical Bayesian approach. Derivations for conducting meta-analysis on correlations in the industrial psychology and organizational behavior (OB) discipline were reviewed by Hunter and Schmidt (2004). In this approach, Hunter and Schmidt propose an empirical Bayesian analysis where the results from previous studies are used as a prior. This …

Presence Of Haemosporidia And Flaviviruses In Breeding Prothonotary Warblers (Protonotaria Citrea): An Analysis Of Spatial And Temporal Trends In Infection Prevalence And Associations With Reproductive Success, Elena Grillo
Theses and Dissertations
As Neotropical migratory birds, Prothonotary Warblers are exposed to parasites in both tropical and temperate regions and may act as dispersal agents between geographic areas. This study identifies the prevalence of Haemosporidia, West Nile Virus (WNV), and St. Louis Encephalitis virus (SLEV) in this species. A total of 71.6% of captured Prothonotary Warblers were infected with Haemosporidia during the 2008 breeding season, and infection prevalence increased throughout the season. This temporal change in prevalence is likely due to infection relapse and transmission of new infections. No correlations between reproductive effort and infection status were observed, nor were any associations between …

Typology Of Signed Languages: Differentiation Through Kinship Terminology, Erin Wilkinson
Linguistics ETDs
Nearly all such studies have sought to understand the linguistic constraints of spoken languages, while largely neglecting signed languages. Despite the fact that spoken languages can be classified into types, signed languages are generally assumed to be clustered all together in one type which the current study challenges. Exploring the potential for a varied typology among signed languages requires identifying patterns across a sampling of geographically distinct and historically unrelated signed languages to formulate linguistic generalizations. To that end this study adopts Greenbergs 1966 analysis of Universals of Kinship Terminology, it examines the linguistic patterns that emerge from a comparison …

Objective And Subjective Residential Context And Urban Children’S Weight Status And Physical And Sedentary Activities, Rachel Tolbert Kimbro, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Sara Mclanahan
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
This paper fills this gap by addressing two research questions: first, we ask, are the activity patterns (outdoor play and television watching) of five-year-old children living in large cities associated with children’s weight status? Second, we ask, is residential context, and neighborhood safety in particular, associated with children’s activity patterns? Consistent with past research, we find that outdoor play is negatively associated with weight status, while television watching is positively associated with weight status. We also find, unexpectedly, that the poorest children are playing outdoors the most and watching the most television. Finally, we find that three measures of residential …
