The Anchor, Volume 123.01: September 2, 2009, Hope College
The Anchor: 2009
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Geographical Patterning Of Sixteen Goat Breeds From Italy, Albania And Greece Assessed By Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, Lorraine Pariset, Antonella Cuteri, Christina Ligda, Alessio Valentini, Econogene Consortium
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: SNP data of goats of three Mediterranean countries were used for population studies and reconstruction of geographical patterning. 496 individuals belonging to Italian, Albanian and Greek breeds were genotyped to assess the basic population parameters.
Results: A total of 26 SNPs were used, for a total of 12,896 genotypes assayed. Statistical analysis revealed that breeds are not so similar in terms of genetic variability, as reported in studies performed using different markers. The Mantel test showed a strongly significant correlation between genetic and geographic distance. Also, PCA analysis revealed that breeds are grouped according to geographical origin, …

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
Dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) have all been implicated in resolving decision conflict whether this conflict is generated by having to select between responses of similar value or by making selections following a reversal in reinforcement contingencies. However, work distinguishing their individual functional contributions remains preliminary. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to delineate the functional role of these systems with regard to both forms of decision conflict. Within dmPFC and dlPFC, blood oxygen level-dependent responses increased in response to decision conflict regardless of whether the conflict occurred in the context of …
The Effect Of Experiential Education On Students' Attitudes About Complementary & Alternative Medicine Practices, Eva Kaul, Mariebeth Velasquez
The Effect Of Experiential Education On Students' Attitudes About Complementary & Alternative Medicine Practices, Eva Kaul, Mariebeth Velasquez
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of an experiential Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) education session in changing medical students beliefs, attitudes, and comfort level with CAM. DESIGN: Students attended a 3 hour class on Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with a trained provider, and completed a Likert scale survey of their agreement with various statements about CAM both pre and post-session. ASSESSMENT: Changes in agreement with 7 of the 10 items reached statistical significance, including increase in students' subjective level of knowledge about CAM, decrease in the belief that CAM is too controversial to discuss with patients, increase in perceived ability …

The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan
The Impact Of American Movies On Egyptian Cinema In 1950s And 1960s, Radi Abouelhassan
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The 1952 military coup in Egypt constituted the beginning of a new era in Egypts history and pushed forward substantial societal, economic and political changes. These changes represent the fruits of the revolutionary regime's pro-modernization ideology. In their search for modernity, the Egyptian elite invested in cinema as well as other forms of media and tended to follow the models of western countries. The strong relation between the Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and the US, as well as the dominance of the American movies shown Egypt compared to other foreign cinematic industries at that time, directed the Egyptian elite …

School Counselor Perspectives On Bullying Behavior In Urban Middle School Settings, Elizabeth Jean Zacher
School Counselor Perspectives On Bullying Behavior In Urban Middle School Settings, Elizabeth Jean Zacher
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study examined middle school counselors' perspectives of bullying behavior as it occurred in their respective school environments. This exploratory study was conducted with 12 respondents who are current middle school counselors with at least three years of experience working in their school settings. Respondents were recruited from a variety of middle school settings including public, private, and charter school environments in the New York City area using a snowball sampling method. Participation in the study included answering a demographic questionnaire and engaging in a face-to-face taped interview that included questions about definitions of bullying, school setting, bullying incidents, …

An Integrated Assessment Of Archaeobotanical Recovery Methods In The Neotropical Rainforest Of Northern Belize: Flotation And Dry Screening, Jon B. Hageman, David J. Goldstein
An Integrated Assessment Of Archaeobotanical Recovery Methods In The Neotropical Rainforest Of Northern Belize: Flotation And Dry Screening, Jon B. Hageman, David J. Goldstein
Anthropology Faculty Publications
This report presents results of a study examining the ancient use of plants at four Late Classic (CE 600-900) Maya rural farmsteads in northwestern Belize. Our research specifically targeted residential middens for macrobotanical recovery. Samples yielded the remains of more than a dozen plant families, representing some genera that do not currently grow in the area. These plants were used in the Late Classic, countering the idea that ancient botanical remains do not survive in Neotropical archaeological contexts. We also evaluated two macrobotanical sample processing methods vis-à-vis one another: flotation and dry screening. Our results indicate that flotation recovered 58% …
Finding The Missing Puzzle Piece Of Autism, Julie O'Connor
Finding The Missing Puzzle Piece Of Autism, Julie O'Connor
New Science
Autism, one of the greatest mysteries of medicine – and the most pervasive development disorder that is characterized by the impairment of social interactions and communication, severely restricted interest levels and highly repetitive behavior – is prevalent in one to two per 1,000 people. Autism affects many parts of the brain, but how it happens is not clearly understood. Signs of autism become noticeable in the first three years of a child’s life, and early intervention can help children gain important social, communication and self-care skills they would otherwise lack. There is no single known cause of autism and there …

Ontogenetic Patterns Of Agonistic Behavior In A Guild Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, Cy L. Mott, Donald W. Sparling
Ontogenetic Patterns Of Agonistic Behavior In A Guild Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, Cy L. Mott, Donald W. Sparling
Publications
Agonistic behavior is a common feature of larval amphibians inhabiting temporary ponds. Given the temporally staggered sequence of hatching by pond-breeding amphibians, ontogenetic patterns of aggression can influence coexistence if larvae of certain species or ages are subject to increased aggression. To determine whether aggression changes through larval ontogeny, we observed agonistic behavior of Ambystoma opacum, Ambystoma tigrinum, and Ambystoma maculatum at four stages of development spanning the larval period. We tracked aggression rates among individual larvae to determine whether previous success, in the form of increased aggression, facilitated success in subsequent contests. All species exhibited distinct ontogenetic …
