Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with an increased incidence of depressive disorders in patient populations. However, the mechanisms that link prenatal ethanol exposure and depression are unknown. Several recent studies have implicated reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the hippocampal formation and frontal cortex as important contributors to the etiology of depression. In the present studies, we sought to determine whether prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with behaviors modeling depression, as well as with reduced BDNF levels in the hippocampal formation and/or medial frontal cortex, in a mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Compared to control adult …

Life on Earth depends on photosynthesis. Photosynthetic systems evolved early in Earth history and have been stable for 2.5 billion years, providing prima facie evidence for the significance of pigments in plant functions. Photosynthetic pigments fill multiple roles from increasing the range of energy captured for photosynthesis to protective functions. Given the importance of pigments to leaf functioning, greater effort is needed to determine whether individual pigments can be identified and quantified in vivo using high fidelity spectroscopy. We review recent advances in detecting plant pigments at the leaf level and discuss successes and reasons why challenges remain for robust …

Experiential learning opportunities promote skill in problem-solving and critical thinking, but they require unique assessment methods because traditional approaches are difficult to implement in the field. We have conducted a study tour course involving a canoe trip in a wilderness area in northern Minnesota since 2004. Here, we describe how we developed our course's learning experiences, ensured the learning experiences materialized, and assessed the student learning objectives. Proper planning can result in valuable, spontaneous learning experiences. We used a student journal, field-based quiz, and participation grade to effectively assess the breadth of student learning that was inherent in our course. …

Giving Hope Through Research: A Search For Novel Treatments For Parkinson's Disease, Depression And Drug Abuse, Julie O'Connor
Giving Hope Through Research: A Search For Novel Treatments For Parkinson's Disease, Depression And Drug Abuse, Julie O'Connor
New Science
Parkinson’s disease affects approximately one percent of people older than 65 years of age. Nearly one million people in the United States have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a chronic and progressively debilitating disorder. This motor system disorder which causes trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw and face; stiffness of the limbs and trunk; slowness of movement; and impaired balance and coordination, is the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. While there is great hope in Parkinson’s disease research, there is no cure. A variety of medications provide relief from the symptoms, including levodopa, also known as L-dopa, …
Counter Attack: Developing New Weapons In The Battle Against Antibiotic Resistance, Amy Oprean
Counter Attack: Developing New Weapons In The Battle Against Antibiotic Resistance, Amy Oprean
New Science
In the course of human medicine, few discoveries have been as far-reaching and successful as the development of antibiotics in the 20th century. Introduced to mainstream medicine in the 1940s, these drugs have been utilized to vanquish a vast array of bacterial infections, relieving the suffering and saving the lives of millions of people. But antibiotics aren’t the surefire defense they used to be. A drop in research over the past several decades in developing new antibiotics, coupled with bacteria’s evolutionary drive to develop resistance, has caused the number of effective antibiotics to diminish, and with increasing speed. Christine Chow, …

Turning Down Tinnitus: Giving Veterans Their Peace And Quiet, Amy Oprean
New Science
For many people, it’s a temporary annoyance – the high-pitched ringing in the ears that comes after working with a power saw, a leaf blower or perhaps most commonly, the unwanted souvenir from a concert. But while tinnitus may be a transient hassle for many, there is another group of people for which it’s a permanent and debilitating phenomenon. Military personnel stationed in the warzones of Iraq and Afghanistan experience the “phantom sound” of tinnitus much like civilians do, but for troops, the perpetual exposure to roadside bombs, gunfire, and rocket-propelled grenades exacerbates the condition to the point of no …

The Relationships Among Social Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence And Cultural Intelligence, Kerri A. Crowne
Organization Management Journal
This article examines three forms of intelligence: social intelligence (SI), emotional intelligence (EI) and cultural intelligence (CQ). The aim is to establish the relationship that exists between EI and CQ, and to clearly show how they is distinct, but related constructs, as well as subsets of SI. A series of models is developed to support the various propositions presented and to show the evolution of ideas which build to the final integrated model. This new model will impact future research and managerial use of these constructs, which is critical in order to advance the field. A discussion of limitations of …

Taking Stock Of Arctic Sea Ice And Climate, Mary-Louise Timmermans, Jennifer Francis, Audrey Proshutinsky, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Taking Stock Of Arctic Sea Ice And Climate, Mary-Louise Timmermans, Jennifer Francis, Audrey Proshutinsky, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Sociology
Abstract
The relationship among the cause-and-effect of the Arctic atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean is discussed. The increased vulnerability of the Arctic system to anomalous atmospheric forcing can be argued from the perspective that recent ice loss is the result of a long-term preconditioning to thinner ice. Such consequences demonstrate the difficulties inherent in ascertaining how the atmospheric circulation responds to Arctic, and global, climate change. Later-forming sea ice also leads to less protection from the waves of fall storms, affecting coastal communities such as Kivalina and Shishmaref. The coming decades will provide new insights into the complexities of the …

Chronic inflammation is a process where dendritic cells (DCs) are constantly sampling antigen in the skin and migrating to lymph nodes where they induce the activation and proliferation of T cells. The T cells then travel back to the skin where they release cytokines that induce/maintain the inflammatory condition. This process is cyclic and ongoing. We created a differential equations model to reflect the initial stages of the inflammatory process. In particular, we modeled antigen stimulation of DCs in the skin, movement of DCs from the skin to a lymph node, and the subsequent activation of T cells in the …

The relationships between soil parent lithology, nutrient concentrations, microbial biomass and community structure were evaluated in soils from a small watershed impacted by historic Hg mining. Upland and wetland soils, stream sediments and tailings were collected and analyzed for nutrients (DOC, SO4=, NO3−), Hg, MeHg, and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA). Stream sediment was derived from serpentinite, siltstone, volcanic rocks and mineralized serpentine with cinnabar, metacinnabar and other Hg phases. Soils from different parent materials had distinct PLFA biomass and community structures that are related to nutrient concentrations and toxicity effects of trace metals including Hg. The formation of MeHg appears …
