Cracked Rotor Detection By Recurrence Plots, Grzegorz Litak, Jerzy T. Sawicki, Rafał Kaspereka
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Recurrence plots (RPs) analysis has been used to distinguish cracked and healthy rotor responses. It has been shown that the recurrence criteria of the dynamical systems defined by the RPs can indicate the damages of the rotating shaft using relatively short time series.

S-(2-Succinyl)cysteine (2SC) is formed by reaction of the Krebs cycle intermediate fumarate with cysteine residues in protein, a process termed succination of protein. Both fumarate and succination of proteins are increased in adipocytes cultured in high glucose medium (Nagai, R., Brock, J. W., Blatnik, M., Baatz, J. E., Bethard, J., Walla, M. D., Thorpe, S. R., Baynes, J. W., and Frizzell, N. (2007) J. Biol. Chem. 282, 34219-34228). We show here that succination of protein is also increased in epididymal, mesenteric, and subcutaneous adipose tissue of diabetic (db/db) mice and that adiponectin is a major target for succination in both …

Bacterial microcompartments (BMCs) are polyhedral bodies, composed entirely of proteins, that function as organelles in bacteria; they promote subcellular processes by encapsulating and co-localizing targeted enzymes with their substrates. The best-characterized BMC is the carboxysome, a central part of the carbon-concentrating mechanism that greatly enhances carbon fixation in cyanobacteria and some chemoautotrophs. Here we report the first structural insights into the carboxysome of Prochlorococcus, the numerically dominant cyanobacterium in the world's oligotrophic oceans. Bioinformatic methods, substantiated by analysis of gene expression data, were used to identify a new carboxysome shell component, CsoS1D, in the genome of Prochlorococcus strain MED4; …
Inhibition Of The Calcium Plateau Following In Vitro Status Epilepticus Prevents The Development Of Spontaneous Recurrent Epileptiform Discharges, Nisha Nagarkatti
Inhibition Of The Calcium Plateau Following In Vitro Status Epilepticus Prevents The Development Of Spontaneous Recurrent Epileptiform Discharges, Nisha Nagarkatti
Theses and Dissertations
Status epilepticus (SE) is a major clinical emergency resulting in continuous seizure activity that can cause brain injury and many molecular and pathophysiologic changes leading to neuronal plasticity. The neuronal plasticity following SE-induced brain injury can initiate epileptogenesis and lead to the ultimate expression of acquired epilepsy (AE), characterized clinically by spontaneous, recurrent seizures. Epileptogenesis is the process wherein healthy brain tissue is transformed into hyperexcitable neuronal networks that produce AE. Understanding these alterations induced by brain injury is an important clinical challenge and can lend insight into possible new therapeutic targets to halt the development of AE. Currently there …

Gas Phase Chiral Recognition, Characterization Of Porous Polymer Monolith Nanospray Ionization, And The Negative Mode Crafti Method Using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry, Nannan Fang
Theses and Dissertations
Our group has been studying chiral recognition in gas phase using mass spectrometry for more than 10 years. We are interested in gas phase studies of fundamental interactions because the gas phase avoids complications and masking effects that may arise upon solvation. Therefore, the results of gas phase experiments can be directly compared with those of high-level computational studies. In chapter 2, I studied the roles of hydrogen bonding and pi stacking in gas phase chiral recognition between aromatic crown molecules and aromatic amines. High affinity between host and guest doesn't necessarily result in better recognition. If the affinity is …
Motion Analysis Of Fluid Flow In A Spinning Disk Reactor, Valentina N. Korzhova
Motion Analysis Of Fluid Flow In A Spinning Disk Reactor, Valentina N. Korzhova
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The flow of a liquid film over a rapidly rotating horizontal disk has numerous industrial applications including pharmaceuticals, chemical engineering, bioengineering, etc. The analysis and control of complex fluid flows over a rapidly rotating horizontal disk is an important issue in the experimental fluid mechanics. The spinning disk reactor exploits the benefits of centrifugal force, which produces thin highly sheared films due to radial acceleration. The hydrodynamics of the film results in excellent fluid mixing and high heat or mass transfer rates.
This work focuses on developing a novel approach for fluid flow tracking and analysis. Specifically, the developed algorithm …
Genes And Symptoms Of Schizophrenia: Modifiers, Networks, And Interactions In Complex Disease, Sarah Bergen
Genes And Symptoms Of Schizophrenia: Modifiers, Networks, And Interactions In Complex Disease, Sarah Bergen
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the genetic foundations of schizophrenia and the resultant symptom manifestations is an important step as we work toward development of new prevention and treatment strategies. This work has sought better understanding of this disease through use of three subject cohorts and two studies using simulated data exploring features of complex disease. First, we probed the symptoms of schizophrenia in subjects of African and European ancestry drawn from the Genetic Association Information Network (GAIN) schizophrenia study and found significant differences between groups, particularly in affective symptoms. The genetic basis of symptom variation was then explored in a selection of candidate …

Foraging Preference By Wild Deer On Toyon Populations From Santa Catalina Island Versus The Santa Monica Mountains, Amelia I. Clark, Rodney Honeycutt, Anjel Helms, Stephen Davis
Biology
Post-fire regeneration of Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), a chaparral shrub on Santa Catalina Island is impeded by mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), a non-native species introduced during the 1930’s. Mainland and island populations of Toyon were examined for potential differences in defense mechanisms that act as natural deterrents to over-browsing by ungulate herbivores, with the hypothesis that island populations, void of natural ungulate herbivores, may lack such defense mechanisms. Several characteristics of leaf morphology, including number and length of spines, leaf area and depth, and tensile strength of leaves, were compared between island and mainland populations. Leaves of Toyon from Santa Catalina …
