Density Functional Theory Studies Of Energetic Materials, Michael W. Conroy Sep 2009

Density Functional Theory Studies Of Energetic Materials, Michael W. Conroy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

First-principles calculations employing density functional theory (DFT) were

performed on the energetic materials PETN, HMX, RDX, nitromethane, and a recently

discovered material, nitrate ester 1 (NEST-1). The aims of the study were to accurately

predict the isothermal equation of state for each material, improve the description of these

molecular crystals in DFT by introducing a correction for dispersion interactions, and

perform uniaxial compressions to investigate physical properties that might contribute to

anisotropic sensitivity.

For each system, hydrostatic-compression simulations were performed. Important

properties calculated from the simulations such as the equilibrium structure, isothermal

equation of state, and bulk moduli were compared …

Cultural Diversity And Economic Performance: Evidence From European Regions, Giovanni Prarolo, Elena Bellini, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Dino Pinelli Sep 2009

Cultural Diversity And Economic Performance: Evidence From European Regions, Giovanni Prarolo, Elena Bellini, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Dino Pinelli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We investigate the relationship between diversity and productivity in Europe using an original dataset covering the NUTS 3 regions of 12 countries of the EU15 (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, former Western Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). In so doing, we follow the empirical methodology developed by Ottaviano and Peri (2006a) in the case of US cities. The main idea is that, as cultural diversity may affect both production and consumption through positive or negative externalities, the joint estimation of price and income equations is needed to identify the dominant effect. Based on this …

The Economic Valuation Of Marine Ecosystems, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Helen Ding, Anil Markandya Sep 2009

The Economic Valuation Of Marine Ecosystems, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Helen Ding, Anil Markandya

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a democratic system, policy makers have to take the preferences of the citizens into account. Since we live in a world with scarce resources, one is asked to make choices regarding the use and management of these resources. In this context, if policy makers decide to invest in the protection of marine ecosystems, less financial resources will be available for other policy areas, for example national health. Moreover, the investment in the protection of marine ecosystems brings along with it the provision of a wide range of benefits to humans though most are not priced in the existing markets …

Mapping The Evolution Of "Clusters": A Meta-Analysis, Mario A. Maggioni, Francesca Gambarotto, T. Erika Uberti Sep 2009

Mapping The Evolution Of "Clusters": A Meta-Analysis, Mario A. Maggioni, Francesca Gambarotto, T. Erika Uberti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper presents a meta-analysis of the “cluster literature” contained in scientific journals from 1969 to 2007. Thanks to an original database we study the evolution of a stream of literature which focuses on a research object which is both a theoretical puzzle and an empirical widespread evidence. We identify different growth stages, from take-off to development and maturity. We test the existence of a life-cycle within the authorships and we discover the existence of a substitutability relation between different collaborative behaviours. We study the relationships between a “spatial” and an “industrial” approach within the textual corpus of cluster literature …

The Anchor, Volume 123.03: September 16, 2009, Hope College

The Anchor: 2009

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Dialectic Aesthetics: The Landscape Aesthetics Of Steven Bourassa And The Architecture Aesthetics Of Roger Scruton, Jacob M. Baker

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

This paper explores the similarities and differences between Roger Scruton's The Aesthetics of Architecture and Steven Bourassa's The Aesthetics of Landscape. The purpose of Scruton's book, according to Scruton, is to introduce readers to aesthetics. Architecture was chosen as the explanatory device because it poses unique problems to aesthetics. One such problem, Scruton explains, is that architecture is not just an aesthetic object; it also must satisfy human needs. This separates architecture from other arts that are not required to satisfy the same human needs. Scruton also chose architecture because in his opinion, no one up to that point, (1979,) …

Educating The Power: Hiv/Aids And Parliamentarians Of Pakistan., Mohammad A Rai, Alefiyah Rajabali, Muhammad N Khan, Mohammad A Khan, Syed H Ali

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Increasing rates of HIV have been recorded amongst the Injection Drug User community from all parts of Pakistan. This has mobilized the health authorities into definitive action before there is a general spread of the epidemic into the Pakistani populace. Lacking any formal research as pertains to HIV policy development in Pakistan, international collaborating agencies, including the United Nations, are aiding in the formulation of a national policy to tackle HIV/AIDS. This article discusses the progress and importance of interventions being conducted amongst the Parliamentarians of Pakistan, relatively unchartered waters. The series of Seminars help to appraise the Parliamentarians of …

A Fluorescent Fibre Solar Concentrator (Ffsc) Design And Trial Run / Wang Chen, Chen Wang Sep 2009

A Fluorescent Fibre Solar Concentrator (Ffsc) Design And Trial Run / Wang Chen, Chen Wang

Student Works (2000-2009)

This thesis presents the author's research work on a concept development in the field of solar energy application for building illumination during his doctoral journey in Malaysia. As a considerable solution to the energy issues, solar energy is made widely available for daylighting and direct production of electricity. Various devices have been developed to collect, concentrate, transport, store and con ert solar irradiation, such as the light pipe, optical fibers, optical solar concentrators, and luminescent solar concentrators (LSC). Many limitations such a the strict dependence on beam irradiation and difficulties for wiring remain in these daylighting devices. This thesis introduces …

The Influences Of Cell Type And Zno Nanoparticle Size On Immune Cell Cytotoxicity And Cytokine Induction, Cory Hanley, Aaron Thurber, Charles Hanna, Alex Punnoose, Jianhui Zhang, Denise G. Wingett

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Nanotechnology represents a new and enabling platform that promises to provide a range of innovative technologies for biological applications. ZnO nanoparticles of controlled size were synthesized, and their cytotoxicity towards different human immune cells evaluated. A differential cytotoxic response between human immune cell subsets was observed, with lymphocytes being the most resistant and monocytes being the most susceptible to ZnO nanoparticle-induced toxicity. Significant differences were also observed between previously activated memory lymphocytes and naive lymphocytes, indicating a relationship between cell-cycle potential and nanoparticle susceptibility. Mechanisms of toxicity involve the generation of reactive oxygen species, with monocytes displaying the highest levels, …

Developing Eligibility Criteria For Daylighting Streams As Applied To Dallas' Mill Creek, Deepa Harkishore Koshaley Sep 2009

Developing Eligibility Criteria For Daylighting Streams As Applied To Dallas' Mill Creek, Deepa Harkishore Koshaley

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Daylighting is a deliberate act of exposing the full or partial flow of previously buried rivers, creeks and streams into restored surface waterways. Human development has encroached upon natural streams and confined them in concrete channels and pipes, covered them partially or fully, and altered their natural courses. Eventually this has caused reductions in flow capacity, increase in flow velocity, and water pollution, leading to floods, erosion, and loss of natural resources. Stream daylighting is in a developmental phase, meaning that most of the daylighting projects have been undertaken without proper hydrological, geomorphological, and ecological assessment or knowledge of the …

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight Sep 2009

Innovative Storm Water Best Management Practices : Their Influence On Landscape Architecture In North Texas, Jason Christopher Voight

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The land development process is essentially a three step progression consisting of input from developers who envision and fund a project, designers who translate the developer's vision into a buildable project, and the regulators who ensure that the project upholds, to the extent allowable by law, the health, safety, and welfare of mankind including the environment. As an outgrowth of this development model, the modern American city has evolved overtime into a sprawling metropolis, which has had a direct, deleterious impact on watersheds. To address these detrimental impacts, storm water regulations have been authored on federal, state, and local levels, which …
