The Extraction Of Cytochrome C And Dsred2 Into Reverse Micelles, Michelle Baker
The Extraction Of Cytochrome C And Dsred2 Into Reverse Micelles, Michelle Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Cytochrome c and DsRed2 were successfully extracted into reverse micelles by the contacting of an aqueous protein-containing phase with an organic phase. Two important properties that differentiate the extraction profiles of these proteins are pI and size. Cytochrome c is a relatively small, monomeric protein with a pI of 10.6. It was easily extracted into reverse micelles with the anionic surfactant AOT. DsRed2, however, is a large tetramer with a p1 of 6.3. It could not be extracted into AOT, but was extracted with the cationic surfactant CTAB, and with a wider error range than cytochrome c. CD data indicate …

Use Of The Chambira Palm (Astrocaryum Chambira) In Rainforest Communities Of The Peruvian Amazon, Anel Guel, Jim Penn
Use Of The Chambira Palm (Astrocaryum Chambira) In Rainforest Communities Of The Peruvian Amazon, Anel Guel, Jim Penn
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
We proposed to research the use of chambira palm fibers and the sale of chambira crafts in four communities located about 100 miles from the city of Iquitos, Peru. In this part of the Peruvian Amazon, women are organized into groups that work to obtain the fibers and sell their products in a sustainable way, and at the same time promote the cultivation of the palm trees in their family gardens. As is the case with so many products from tropical forests, there is great geographic variation in the abundance of the resource (chambira) and variation in the amount of …

Genome-wide association studies are becoming the de facto standard in the genetic analysis of common human diseases. Given the complexity and robustness of biological networks such diseases are unlikely to be the result of single points of failure but instead likely arise from the joint failure of two or more interacting components. The hope in genome-wide screens is that these points of failure can be linked to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) which confer disease susceptibility. Detecting interacting variants that lead to disease in the absence of single-gene effects is difficult however, and methods to exhaustively analyze sets of these variants …
Martian Modules: Design Of A Programmable Martian Settlement, Craig A. Trover
Martian Modules: Design Of A Programmable Martian Settlement, Craig A. Trover
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of human beings is marked
by adaptation. The ability to adapt to and
manipulate our environment is one definer of
intelligence, and ours is unique among life
on Earth. Since moving off of the African
Continent, humans have migrated to inhabit
every part of the Earth. Human existence
and perpetuity in the universe depends upon
the success of this adaptation, and inevitably,
migrating off of this planet. The technological
advances being developed today will change
our way of life, and enable people to travel to
and live permanently on the Moon and Mars.
This study involves the architectural …

The Human Rna Polymerase Ii-Associated Factor 1 (Hpaf1): A New Regulator Of Cell-Cycle Progression., Nicolas Moniaux, Christophe Nemos, Shonali Deb, Bing Zhu, Irena Dornreiter, Michael A. Hollingsworth, Surinder K. Batra
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
BACKGROUND: The human PAF (hPAF) complex is part of the RNA polymerase II transcription apparatus and regulates multiple steps in gene expression. Further, the yeast homolog of hPaf1 has a role in regulating the expression of a subset of genes involved in the cell-cycle. We therefore investigated the role of hPaf1 during progression of the cell-cycle.
METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: Herein, we report that the expression of hPaf1, a subunit of the hPAF complex, increases with cell-cycle progression and is regulated in a cell-cycle dependant manner. hPaf1 specifically regulates a subclass of genes directly implicated in cell-cycle progression during G1/S, S/G2, and G2/M. …

Predictors Of Early Adult Outcome In Pediatric-Onset Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Brittany G. Craiglow
Predictors Of Early Adult Outcome In Pediatric-Onset Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Brittany G. Craiglow
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This study was conducted in order to determine childhood clinical predictors of early adult outcome in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We specifically hypothesized that OCD symptom dimensions and comorbid tic disorders would be associated with persistence of obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms into early adulthood. The study followed a longitudinal cohort design in which 45 of 61 eligible children with OCD were reassessed in early adulthood an average of 9 years following a baseline childhood assessment. Main outcome measures included expert-rated OC symptom severity and time to remission of OC symptoms. Baseline clinical characteristics were evaluated in terms of their impact on …

Exploring Adolescent Loneliness And Companion Animal Attachment, Keri Black
Exploring Adolescent Loneliness And Companion Animal Attachment, Keri Black
Nursing ETDs
This study explored the relationship between companion animal attachment and adolescent loneliness. Self report measures of loneliness (Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale), companion animal attachment (Companion Animal Bonding Scale), and social support (Social Support Questionnaire Revised Short Form) were completed by 293 adolescents from two ethnically diverse southwest rural high schools. Pet information included the type of favored pet, length of pet relationship, the number of household pets, and how the participants described their pet relationship. Participants also provided basic demographic data about themselves and their pets. Descriptive statistics, standard multiple regressions, t-tests, and ANOVAs were employed to examine relationships among …

Long-Term Immunity To Lethal Acute Or Chronic Type Ii Toxoplasma Gondii Infection Is Effectively Induced In Genetically Susceptible C57bl/6 Mice By Immunization With An Attenuated Type I Vaccine Strain, Jason P. Gigley, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik
Dartmouth Scholarship
C57BL/6 (B6) mice are genetically highly susceptible to chronic type II Toxoplasma gondii infections that invariably cause lethal toxoplasmic encephalitis. We examined the ability of an attenuated type I vaccine strain to elicit long-term immunity to lethal acute or chronic type II infections in susceptible B6 mice. Mice immunized with the type I cps1-1 vaccine strain were not susceptible to a lethal (100-cyst) challenge with the type II strain ME49. Immunized mice challenged with 10 ME49 cysts exhibited significant reductions in brain cyst and parasite burdens compared to naive mice, regardless of the route of challenge infection. Remarkably, cps1-1 strain-immunized …

Factors Surrounding And Strategies To Reduce Recapping Used Needles By Nurses At A Venezuelan Public Hospital, Luis J. Galindez Araujo
Factors Surrounding And Strategies To Reduce Recapping Used Needles By Nurses At A Venezuelan Public Hospital, Luis J. Galindez Araujo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nurses as health care workers are at risk of biological agents such as bacteria, viruses and others. At health care settings exposure to bloodborne pathogens can cause infections through needlestick injuries. The objectives of this research were to determine factors surrounding recapping needles in hospital nurses and to implement an educational strategy to reduce the recapping practices.
It was a descriptive and exploratory approach where the PRECEDE component of the PRECEDE/PROCEDE Model was used as the framework to systematize and analyze the information obtained from the focus group sessions.
A total of 120 nurses participated from four different departments. The …
