Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. Often, the optic nerve head (ONH) glaucomatous damage and ONH changes occur prior to visual field loss and are observable in vivo. Thus, digital image analysis is a promising choice for detecting the onset and/or progression of glaucoma. In this paper, we present a new framework for detecting glaucomatous changes in the ONH of an eye using the method of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). A baseline topograph subspace was constructed for each eye to describe the structure of the ONH of the eye at a reference/baseline condition using POD. Any glaucomatous …

A number of years ago, the library began hosting the digitized back files of several campus-based journal publications in CONTENTdm. A little over two years ago, Mark Belk, the editor of the Western North American Naturalist whose backfile we were hosting, approached Randy Olsen, our University Librarian with a problem. Mark explained that in his role as editor he was drowning in e-mails and things were falling through the cracks. Randy tasked me to investigate options. This investigation was made considerably easier by work done by Mark Czyzk from Johns Hopkins. The investigation led to the selection of OJS as …

Patterns Of Affiliation And Agonism In A Ringtailed Lemur, , Society: Tests Of The Socioecological Model And Other Hypotheses, Gena Christine Sbeglia

Theses

Efforts to understand the variation in primate social systems and the underlying social interactions have focused on both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In the socioecological model, food distribution and abundance have been argued to be the primary influences on the social relationships and resulting social organization of primate groups. In the first part of this study, I examined the relationship of food and three additional factors (kinship, proximity, previous agonism) with patterns of affiliative and agonistic interactions in two semi-free ranging ringtailed lemur, , social groups (n=14) at Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC. Affiliation and high intensity agonism patterns …

What's Race Got To Do With It? Press Coverage Of The Latino Electorate In The 2008 Presidential Primary Season, Laura Gomez

Faculty Scholarship

This article presents a critical analysis of press coverage of Latinos and the presidential election during the Democratic Primary, from January through June 2008. The foundation of this article is a content analysis of 408 articles published in four newspapers about Latinos and the presidential election during the primary season. The four newspapers -- The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Dallas Morning News -- were selected because they are well respected as newspapers of record and because they represent diverse regions of the country (two from the northeast, two from the southwest). Each …

Indicadores Funcionales Y Estructurales Para Evaluar El Estado De Conservación De Humedales Costeros En El Sur De Tamaulipas, Alejandro Fierro-Cabo

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Maternally Derived Antibodies In Avian Eggs And Offspring: Ecology, Life History, And Development, Brianne Ashley Addison Sep 2009

Maternally Derived Antibodies In Avian Eggs And Offspring: Ecology, Life History, And Development, Brianne Ashley Addison

Dissertations

Mothers can alter offspring phenotypes through a variety of indirect effects, including the deposition of nutrients, hormones, and defense proteins in to the egg. Defense proteins, and antibodies in particular, may be tremendously important for neonatal defense against pathogens and the direction of resources into growth rather than immune responsiveness. Moreover, maternally derived immunoglobulins have been proposed to have an imprinting effect on the development of humoral immunity. In my dissertation, I explored a variety of ecological, life history, and developmental factors that could contribute to the evolution of yolk antibody allocation in a variety of avian species. In the …

Comparison Of The Trauma Symptom Checklist For Children, Ucla Ptsd Index, And Child Behavior Checklist In Children With A Trauma History, Melissa Verish Broome

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to study a host of PTSD assessment-related problems in children with a trauma history (N = 110) who were seeking treatment at a community mental health clinic. Exploratory factor analyses using the trauma-related and non-trauma-related subscales on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL; Achenbach 1991), UCLA PTSD Index (Pynoos 1998), and the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC; Briere 1996) were conducted. Results indicated that in children aged 7 to 11, but not in older children aged 12 to 17, the UCLA PTSD Index and the TSCC trauma-related scales formed a trauma factor. The CBCL …

A Method Of Successive Corrections Of The Control Subspace In The Reduced-Order Variational Data Assimilation, Max Yaremchuk, Dmitri A. Nechaev, Gleb Panteleev Sep 2009

A Method Of Successive Corrections Of The Control Subspace In The Reduced-Order Variational Data Assimilation, Max Yaremchuk, Dmitri A. Nechaev, Gleb Panteleev

Faculty Publications

A version of the reduced control space four-dimensional variational method (R4DVAR) of data assimilation into numerical models is proposed. In contrast to the conventional 4DVAR schemes, the method does not require development of the tangent linear and adjoint codes for implementation. The proposed R4DVAR technique is based on minimization of the cost function in a sequence of low-dimensional subspaces of the control space. Performance of the method is demonstrated in a series of twin-data assimilation experiments into a nonlinear quasigeostrophic model utilized as a strong constraint. When the adjoint code is stable, R4DVAR's convergence rate is comparable to that of …

Evaluation Of Web Resources By Preservice Teachers, Paula Storm, Laura Eidietis Sep 2009

Evaluation Of Web Resources By Preservice Teachers, Paula Storm, Laura Eidietis

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Paula Storm and Laura Eidietis have collaborated on a chapter that deals with information literacy and preservice teachers. Eidietis, who teaches classes on biology education for future elementary teachers, became concerned about the poor job her students sometimes did when searching for Internet resources for use in their classes. She combined with Paula Storm, EMU's Science and Technology Librarian, to develop and assess workshops aimed at helping students perform more productive Internet searches on scientific topics. The two authors report here on their study; they demonstrate that the criteria students use in assessing Internet sites are often rather different from …
