Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo
Guided Inquiry Animations In General Chemistry, Larry Kolopajlo
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU
Many people have nightmares about their undergraduate chemistry experiences. I suspect, though, that if Larry Kolopajlo had been our teacher, this would not be the case. Larry's work in this chapter is motivated by his desire to see students achieve mastery in this challenging subject. Larry has developed an impressive collection of computerized animations that, for example, show students the movement of atoms in chemical reactions. By being able to observe what previously had been hidden aspects of the subject, students should be able to gain a deeper understanding of what is going on. This should help the students to …

A Role For Rage System Activation In Preterm Birth, Margaret Ann Baumbusch
A Role For Rage System Activation In Preterm Birth, Margaret Ann Baumbusch
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a multiligand pattern recognition receptor involved in transducing endogenous damage associated stimuli into inflammatory responses. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), HMGB1 (amphoterin) and S100 proteins, such as S100B, are prototype RAGE ligands, while soluble RAGE (sRAGE), a product of RAGE activation, acts as a ligand scavenger and RAGE inhibitor. We propose that RAGE may play important yet distinct pathogenic roles in both inflammation-induced preterm birth and preeclampsia and that, while inflammation-induced preterm birth associates with fetal RAGE activation, preeclampsia induces a maternal state of RAGE activation. We sought to identify the …

Tension –Free Inguinal Hernia Repair Comparing 'Mesh' With 'Darn' A Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial, Ali M.Al-Saiegh, Raad S. Al-Saffar, Haider T. Al-Khassaki
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Lichtenstein tension free hernioplasty(mesh repair) and Moloney darn repair are commonly practiced repairs for inguinal hernias with acceptably low recurrence rates. Mesh repair is considered more recent than darn repair and both of them are tension free. OBJECTIVE: To compare the number of postoperative complications and early recurrence between Mesh repair and Darn repair, for inguinal hernia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted at Department of Surgery, Al-Sadur teaching hospital in An-Najaf from 1st august 2007 to 1st august 2008 . A total of 104 patients were selected. 51 patients were treated with Lichtenstein tension free hernioplasty …

The Role Of Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology In Diagnosis Of Pancreatic Masses: Review Of 40 Cases In Iraq, Rayadh A. Zaydan, Khitam R. Al-Khafaji, Sazan A. Al-Atrooshi
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Pancreatic masses are often initially identified by magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, during evaluation of varied symptoms. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) has been proved to be safe and useful method for tissue sampling including the pancrease. OBJECTIVE: In this study we aim to find out some of the factors which may influence successful EUS-FNA of pancreatic masses, like: location of the mass, size, consistency and other significant factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 40 patients underwent EUS-FNA of pancreatic masses, referred to Gastroenterology and Hepatology Teaching Hospital in Baghdad, from March 2005 to …

Insight On The Side Effects Of Lipid Lowering Agents (Statin) In Iraqi Patients With Ischemic Heart Diseases, Basil N. Saeed
Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: 3-hydroxy-3methyl glutaryl co enzyme inhibitor (MMG-COA) (statin) is a very common drug used in many medical conditions regardless of the presence or absence of dyslipidemia. One of these conditions is the cardiac disorders. OBJECTIVE: Throwing a light on the prevalence of their side effects in Iraqi patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred seventy patients with ischemic heart disease from the period of November 2006-November 2007 referred to Baghdad teaching hospital (the medical city). Those cases were using statin and grouped into two groups. Group A: patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (myocardial infarction and unstable angina) (230 patients …

As the demand for fresh water increases in central Florida to meet both public supply and irrigation needs, stormwater is increasingly being managed as a resource to help offset possible future declines in aquifer water levels. Water quality is an important consideration when using stormwater for recharge or harvesting. A constituent of recent concern is cyanobacteria (popularly known as blue-green algae) because some of these can produce toxins (cyanotoxins) that are detrimental to animal and human health. Microcystins are the most commonly found type of cyanotoxin in Florida and have been detected in a variety of rivers, natural lakes, and …

A grand alliance is forming, and new trenches are being dug on the old and hallowed battleground of the Constitution. Waving the stars and stripes of “constitutional design,” and richly equipping themselves with the weaponry of reason, scholars like Richard Fallon, Sanford Levinson, and Jack Balkin have taken the field to determine “what provisions for judicial review (if any) ought to exist in constitutions for all societies whose people and legislatures are seriously committed to respecting rights,” and to avoiding “constitutional crises” by “careful planning.” Fallon, a self-proclaimed “system-designer,” applauds himself for having “plowed rich ground.” Levinson and Balkin claim …

Throw Away The Map: Blazing New Trails Between Information Literacy And The Disciplines, Carrie Donovan, Brian Winterman
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
There have been many approaches to information literacy education at academic institutions, and many positive outcomes from these efforts. Still, there is need for more research, exploration, and professional communication among librarians to identify information literacy teaching methods that have a consistent and long-lasting impact. Librarians at Indiana University-Bloomington embraced the announcement for information literacy in the General Education requirements as an opportunity to evolve the instruction program from an ad-hoc, decentralized program into one that is based on measurable and achievable learning outcomes for every discipline. When we began asking ourselves what it would take to achieve this on …

Causal Inference For Nested Case-Control Studies Using Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Sherri Rose, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Causal Inference For Nested Case-Control Studies Using Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Sherri Rose, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
A nested case-control study is conducted within a well-defined cohort arising out of a population of interest. This design is often used in epidemiology to reduce the costs associated with collecting data on the full cohort; however, the case control sample within the cohort is a biased sample. Methods for analyzing case-control studies have largely focused on logistic regression models that provide conditional and not marginal causal estimates of the odds ratio. We previously developed a Case-Control Weighted Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimation (TMLE) procedure for case-control study designs, which relies on the prevalence probability q0. We propose the use of …
