Rescuing The Hero: The Ramifications Of Expanding The Duty To Rescue On Society And The Law, Amelia H. Ashton Oct 2009

Rescuing The Hero: The Ramifications Of Expanding The Duty To Rescue On Society And The Law, Amelia H. Ashton

Duke Law Journal

The ongoing debate about the legal duty to rescue another person in peril is fraught with a familiar tension. On one side stands the traditional and distinctly American determination that freedom from such a duty is essential, that the technical rules of tort law and self-preservation instincts disdain such a requirement, and that the postulates of religion and morality are sure to fill in any legal gaps. On the other, a more recent humanitarian perspective-seen in revisions to the Restatement, case law, and some state statutes-advocates for requiring easy rescue, positing that religiously inspired morality and public good-doing are unlikely, …

Foxp3-Expressing T Regulatory Cells (T-Regs) Increase With The Severity Of Active Disease In Chronic Hepatitis C, Adam D. Toll, Md, John L. Farber, Md Oct 2009

Foxp3-Expressing T Regulatory Cells (T-Regs) Increase With The Severity Of Active Disease In Chronic Hepatitis C, Adam D. Toll, Md, John L. Farber, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) leads to chronic disease in 80% of those infected and is associated with a chronic inflammatory response that is mediated by both cytokine producing (CD4+) and cytotoxic T cells (CD8+). FoxP3-expressing, CD4+, CD25+T cells (T-regs) are a subset of T lymphocytes that inhibit immune responsiveness and thereby control immunological reactions. Whether FoxP3+ T regulatory cell-mediated suppression is a factor in HCV persistence and/or the course of chronic liver injury has not been defined. In order to assess the association between these T regulatory cells and the severity of chronic hepatitis C, we evaluated liver biopsies …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Context: Simple tandem repeat loci are used to track bone marrow engraftment using mononuclear buffy coat cells and T-cells. Poor isolation purity of these subpopulations can result in lower analytical sensitivity of the bone marrow engraftment assay by diluting the cell population in question with other nucleated cells. Validation of the mononuclear cell preparation can be performed by flow cytometry or by counting cell populations on the slide. Conclusions: Our results show that the purity of the Histopaque-1077 mononuclear cell preparation is excellent and that morphology may be sufficient to validate the mononuclear cell isolation method if flow cytometry is …

5q- Myelodysplastic Syndromes: Chromosome 5q Genes Direct A Tumor-Suppression Network Sensing Actin Dynamics, K. M. Eisenmann, K. J. Dykema, Stephen F. Matheson, N. F. Kent Oct 2009

5q- Myelodysplastic Syndromes: Chromosome 5q Genes Direct A Tumor-Suppression Network Sensing Actin Dynamics, K. M. Eisenmann, K. J. Dykema, Stephen F. Matheson, N. F. Kent

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Complete loss or interstitial deletions of chromosome 5 are the most common karyotypic abnormality in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs). Isolated del(5q)/5q- MDS patients have a more favorable prognosis than those with additional karyotypic defects, who tend to develop myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and acute myeloid leukemia. The frequency of unbalanced chromosome 5 deletions has led to the idea that 5q harbors one or more tumor-suppressor genes that have fundamental roles in the growth control of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSCs/HPCs). Cytogenetic mapping of commonly deleted regions (CDRs) centered on 5q31 and 5q32 identified candidate tumor-suppressor genes, including the ribosomal subunit RPS14, the transcription …

Differential Reliance On Feelings In The Present Vs. The Future (Or Past): Affect As A Decision Making System Of The Present, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Michel Tuan Pham Oct 2009

Differential Reliance On Feelings In The Present Vs. The Future (Or Past): Affect As A Decision Making System Of The Present, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Michel Tuan Pham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We posit that compared to the cognitive system, the affective system of judgment and decision making is relatively more engaged in the present. Specifically, we hypothesize that even if their accessibility is held constant, affective feelings are weighted more heavily in consumer judgments and decisions set in the present than in equivalent judgments and decisions set in the future or in the past. Consistent with this proposition, results from six experiments show that (a) compared to a more distant future, a nearer future increases consumers’ relative preferences for options that are superior in terms of integral affect over options that …

Splenic Trauma As An Adverse Effect Of Torso-Protecting Side Airbags: Biomechanical And Case Evidence, Jason John Hallman, Karen J. Brasel, Narayan Yoganandan, Frank A. Pintar Oct 2009

Splenic Trauma As An Adverse Effect Of Torso-Protecting Side Airbags: Biomechanical And Case Evidence, Jason John Hallman, Karen J. Brasel, Narayan Yoganandan, Frank A. Pintar

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Injury mechanisms from frontal airbags, first identified in anecdotal reports, are now well documented for pediatric, small female, and out-of-position occupants. In contrast, torso side airbags have not yet been consistently associated with specific injury risks in field assessments. To determine possible torso side airbag-related injuries, the present study identified crashes involving side airbags from reports within the CIREN, NASS, and SCI databases. Injury patterns were compared to patterns from lateral crashes in absence of side airbag. Splenic trauma (AIS 3+) was found present in five cases of torso side airbag deployment at lower impact severity (as measured by velocity …

Rapid Prototyping Augmented Skin Pathology For Medical Simulation And Training, Annette Castelino Oct 2009

Rapid Prototyping Augmented Skin Pathology For Medical Simulation And Training, Annette Castelino

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this research is to study how augmented reality technology could be applied in training medical students for better clinical practice and diagnosis in the treatment of skin conditions using skin pathology prototypes. Described within this thesis is an innovative method of producing skin abscess prototypes that augment the Standardized Patient (SP) for simulation purposes.

The method adopted is a combination of the cost-effective technique of rapid prototyping (RP) — 3D inkjet printing and 3D graphics modeling. The visual and haptic realism of these developed prototypes along with the use of moulage enable the SP to exhibit realistic …

Composite Likelihood Em Algorithm With Applications To Multivariate Hidden Markov Model , Xin Gao, Peter Xuekun Song Sep 2009

Composite Likelihood Em Algorithm With Applications To Multivariate Hidden Markov Model , Xin Gao, Peter Xuekun Song

COBRA Preprint Series

The method of composite likelihood is useful to deal with estimation and inference in parametric models with high-dimensional data, where the full likelihood approach renders to intractable computational complexity. We develop an extension of the EM algorithm in the framework of composite likelihood estimation in the presence of missing data or latent variables. We establish three key theoretical properties of the composite likelihood EM (CLEM) algorithm, including the ascent property, the algorithmic convergence and the convergence rate. The proposed method is applied to estimate the transition probabilities in multivariate hidden Markov model. Simulation studies are presented to demonstrate the empirical …
