African Wetlands Of International Importance: Assessment Of Benefits Associated With Designations Under The Ramsar Convention, Royal C. Gardner, Kim Diana Connolly, Abou Bamba

Journal Articles

A party to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands must designate at least one site within its territory as a Wetland of International Importance. To assess the benefits associated with these international designations, the authors conducted a survey of 26 Ramsar sites in 18 countries in Africa. After a brief introduction to the Ramsar Convention, the article describes the sites that were surveyed, focusing on the ecosystem services they provide and the challenges they face. The article then examines how the sites are identified with the Ramsar Convention and found that designation provided benefits such as: increased support for protection and …

Loo Law: The Public Washroom As A Hyper-Regulated Space, Irus Braverman Jan 2009

Loo Law: The Public Washroom As A Hyper-Regulated Space, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

The article suggests that the public washroom is the most regulated of all public spaces, at least in the United States. It offers several possible explanations for this hyper-juridical attention. First and foremost, the article argues, such hyper-regulation of the public washroom has to do with the sanitary and moral significance of this space. Secondly, the intensity of washroom regulation is due to its ambiguous public/private properties. Finally, the intense regulation of the public washroom is the result of physio-anatomical functions performed in it. Utilizing the State of New York as a lens through which to observe the various issues …

Inverting The Inverted Pyramid: A Conversation About The Use Of Feminist Theories To Teach Journalism, Danna L. Walker, Margaretha Geertsema, Barbara Barnett Jan 2009

Inverting The Inverted Pyramid: A Conversation About The Use Of Feminist Theories To Teach Journalism, Danna L. Walker, Margaretha Geertsema, Barbara Barnett

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Teaching is always challenging, and for some of us who are feminists, teaching journalism is particularly difficult. The tenets of good journalism—objectivity and neutrality—are often antithetical to our feminist values. We face the dilemma of how to incorporate feminist sensibilities into teaching journalism—a profession that strives for detachment and, at times, seems oblivious to its own position of power.

Exploring The Secrets Of The Three-Dimensional Architecture Of Phototrophic Biofilms In Caves, Mònica Roldán, Mariona Hernández-Mariné

KIP Articles

Caves with dim natural light, and lighted hypogean environments, have been found to host phototrophic microorganisms from various taxonomic groups. These microorganisms group themselves into assemblies known as communities or biofilms, which are associated with rock surfaces. In this work, the phototrophic biofilms that colonise speleothems, walls and floors in three tourist caves (Spain) were studied. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study these organisms and acquire three-dimensional data on their biofilm structure. CLSM was used in a multi-channel mode whereby the different channels map individual biofilm components. Cyanobacteria, green microalgae, diatoms, mosses …

Can A Subsequent Change In Law Void A Marriage That Was Valid At Its Inception? Considering The Legal Effect Of Proposition 8 On California's Existing Same-Sex Marriages, Lois A. Weithorn Jan 2009

Can A Subsequent Change In Law Void A Marriage That Was Valid At Its Inception? Considering The Legal Effect Of Proposition 8 On California's Existing Same-Sex Marriages, Lois A. Weithorn

UC Law Journal

On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court held that California's prohibition of same-sex marriage violated the equal protection and due process clauses of the California Constitution. One month later, pursuant to that court's authority, county clerks throughout California began certifying marriages of same-sex couples. Opponents of same-sex marriage placed a voter initiative- ultimately known as Proposition 8-on the November 4, 2008 ballot. Proposition 8 passed with 52.3% of the vote, thereby placing in the California Constitution the language, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." In response to its passage, California officials …

Rethinking The Constitutional Criminal Procedure Of Juvenile Transfer Hearings: Apprendi, Adult Punishment, And Adult Process, Jenny E. Carroll Jan 2009

Rethinking The Constitutional Criminal Procedure Of Juvenile Transfer Hearings: Apprendi, Adult Punishment, And Adult Process, Jenny E. Carroll

UC Law Journal

This Article makes valuable new contributions to the burgeoning scholarly discourse on Apprendi v. New Jersey-a landmark decision that celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. It builds on the Author's experience as a public defender, during which she pioneered the surprising but straightforward argument that under Apprendi, findings that justify transferring a juvenile to adult court must be proven to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt. Apprendi requires that any fact authorizing a sentence higher than the otherwise applicable statutory maximum must be found by a jury using a beyond a reasonable doubt standard. This tenet applies directly to juvenile …

Caspase Cleavage Of The Amyloid Precursor Protein Is Prevented After Overexpression Of Bcl-2 In A Triple Transgenic Mouse Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Debra K. Kumasaka, Veronica Galvan, Elizabeth Head, Troy T. Rohn

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

A recent study demonstrated the lack of beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaque formation and accumulation of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) in a triple transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease (3xTg-AD) following overexpression of the anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2 (Rohn et al., J. Neurosci. 28: 3051-9, 2008). The supposition from that study was the accumulation of APP resulted from a decrease in caspase-mediated processing of APP. To determine a direct role for the caspase-cleavage of APP in 3xTg-AD mice, we designed a site-directed caspasecleavage antibody to APP and demonstrated it is a specific marker for caspase-cleaved APP. Application of this antibody revealed neuronal …

Submission Of American Patent And Health Law Professors On Australian Senate Community Affairs Committee Inquiry Into Gene Patents, Joshua Sarnoff

Legislative Testimony & Comments

In response to the Australian Senate Community Affairs Committee’s Inquiry, the author and other American law professors submitted a brief to help the Senate Committee understand the current state of American law, and how the provision of patents on genetic technologies has and will continue to create serious problems for innovation, health care, and society at large.

The brief addresses the following subjects in regard to American law, which respond generally to the issues raised by the Committee’s inquiry. 1. The questionable need for patent rights in genetic sequences and other derivatives of naturally occurring materials, certain diagnostic discoveries, and …

Integrating Quantitative Reasoning Initiatives With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Effective Program Development, Nathan Grawe, Carol Rutz Jan 2009

Integrating Quantitative Reasoning Initiatives With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Effective Program Development, Nathan Grawe, Carol Rutz

Economics Faculty Work

As an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor, quantitative reasoning (QR) risks falling through the cracks between the traditional “silos” of higher education. This article describes one strategy for developing a truly cross-campus QR initiative: leverage the existing structures of campus writing programs by placing QR in the context of argument. We first describe the integration of Carleton College’s Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge initiative with the Writing Program. Based on our experience, we argue that such an approach leads to four benefits: it reflects important aspects of QR often overlooked by other approaches; it defuses the commonly raised objection that QR is …

Organocatalysis With Endogenous Compounds: Towards Novel Non-Enzymatic Reactions, David G. Alberg, Thomas B. Poulsen, Søren Bertelsen, Kasper L. Christensen, Rune D. Birkler, Mogens Johannsen, Karl Anker Jørgensen

Chemistry Faculty Work

The aldol reaction of the endogeneous compounds acetone and methylglyoxal has been studied using organocatalysis in relation to biologically relevant non-enzymatic reactions. Under preparative conditions, 3-hydroxy-2,5-hexadione, known as Henze’s ketol, is formed in high yield and with enantioselectivities up to 88% ee. Furthermore, Henze’s ketol is also formed under simulated physiological conditions at micromolar scale, indicating that this reaction might take place in living organisms.

The Overlooked Epidemic: Addressing Hiv Prevention And Treatment Among Men Who Have Sex With Men In Sub-Saharan Africa, National Aids Control Council Of Kenya, Population Council

HIV and AIDS

Globally, less than 1 out of 20 men who have sex with men (MSM) has access to HIV prevention and care. UNAIDS has estimated that at least 5 to 10 percent of all HIV infections globally occur through male-to-male sexual activity. In spite of the high risk of HIV infection and evidence of extensive sexual networks, national HIV programs in Africa have been slow to address MSM in prevention and treatment efforts. To address these issues, the Population Council and the National AIDS Control Council of Kenya convened a meeting on May 14–15, 2008. The goals of the meeting were …
