Classification And Cluster Analysis Of Complex Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry For Biological Samples, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Xue Tian, Qingping Tao, Alex Henderson Jan 2009

Classification And Cluster Analysis Of Complex Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry For Biological Samples, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Xue Tian, Qingping Tao, Alex Henderson

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Identifying and separating subtly different biological samples is one of the most critical tasks in biological analysis. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is becoming a popular and important technique in the analysis of biological samples, because it can detect molecular information and characterize chemical composition. ToF-SIMS spectra of biological samples are enormously complex with large mass ranges and many peaks. As a result the classification and cluster analysis are challenging. This study presents a new classification algorithm, the most similar neighbor with a probability-based spectrum similarity measure (MSN- PSSM), which uses all the information in the entire ToF- SIMS …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

The National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) consecutively sponsored the Ocean-Systems for Chemical, Optical, and Physical Experiments (O-SCOPE) and Multi-disciplinary Ocean Sensors for Environmental Analyses and Networks (MOSEAN) projects from 1998 through 2008. The O-SCOPE and MOSEAN projects focused on developing and testing new sensors and systems for autonomous, concurrent measurements of biological, chemical, optical, and physical variables from a diverse suite of stationary and mobile ocean platforms. Design considerations encompassed extended open-ocean and coastal deployments, instrument durability, biofouling mitigation, data accuracy and precision, near-real-time data telemetry, and economy—the latter being critical for widespread sensor and system utilization. The complementary O-SCOPE …

The Limits Of Expanding Patent Claim Scope To Provoke An Interference With A Competitor, Christopher L. Kuyper Jan 2009

The Limits Of Expanding Patent Claim Scope To Provoke An Interference With A Competitor, Christopher L. Kuyper

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Businesses that launch new products or services generally understand the risk of suits for patent infringement from competitors and other patent holders. Such risks are especially high when the first business (“challenger,”) holds no patents on the product or service. However, commercializers that do have patents or patent applications covering their new product or service may be less aware of another lurking risk: a competitor or other party (“challenger,”) owning a separate patent application. In such a scenario, a challenger may provoke a patent interference proceeding to challenge the date of invention for the commercializer’s patent or patent application. This …

Rapid Recovery Of Damaged Ecosystems, Holly P. Jones, O.J. Schmitz Jan 2009

Rapid Recovery Of Damaged Ecosystems, Holly P. Jones, O.J. Schmitz

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Background: Recent reports on the state of the global environment provide evidence that humankind is inflicting great damage to the very ecosystems that support human livelihoods. The reports further predict that ecosystems will take centuries to recover from damages if they recover at all. Accordingly, there is despair that we are passing on a legacy of irreparable damage to future generations which is entirely inconsistent with principles of sustainability. Methodology/Principal Findings: We tested the prediction of irreparable harm using a synthesis of recovery times compiled from240 independent studies reported in the scientific literature. We provide startling evidence that most ecosystems …

Salt Marshes And Eutrophication: An Unsustainable Outcome, R. Eugene Turner, B L. Howes, J M. Teal, C S. Milan, D D. Goehringer-Toner Jan 2009

Salt Marshes And Eutrophication: An Unsustainable Outcome, R. Eugene Turner, B L. Howes, J M. Teal, C S. Milan, D D. Goehringer-Toner

Faculty Publications

Most plant production by emergent coastal marshes occurs belowground. This belowground production adds to the accumulation of organic matter sustaining salt marshes as sea level rises, thus preventing excessive flooding, eventual plant death, and habitat loss. The ubiquitous nutrient enrichment of coastal salt marshes stimulating aboveground plant growth may result in higher rates of inorganic matter accumulation that compensates for marsh flooding caused by sea level rise. Results from several short-term experiments, however, demonstrate that root and rhizome biomass and carbon accumulation is reduced with nutrient enrichment, suggesting that eutrophication of coastal waters may not be a compensatory counterbalance to …

Global Change And Eutrophication Of Coastal Waters, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner, R J. Diaz, D Justic, N N. Rabalais Jan 2009

Global Change And Eutrophication Of Coastal Waters, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner, R J. Diaz, D Justic, N N. Rabalais

Faculty Publications

The cumulative effects of global change, including climate change, increased population, and more intense industrialization and agri-business, will likely continue and intensify the course of eutrophication in estuarine and coastal waters. As a result, the symptoms of eutrophication, such as noxious and harmful algal blooms, reduced water quality, loss of habitat and natural resources, and severity of hypoxia (oxygen depletion) and its extent in estuaries and coastal waters will increase. Global climate changes will likely result in higher water temperatures, stronger stratification, and increased inflows of freshwater and nutrients to coastal waters in many areas of the globe. Both past …

Comments On Buzan Et Al. “Positive Relationships Between Freshwater Inflow And Oyster Abundance In Galveston Bay, Texas”, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Buzan et al. critique Turner’s (Estuaries and Coasts 29:345–352, 2006) analysis of the relationship between freshwater inflow and oyster productivity in the Gulf of Mexico, using 16 years of fisheries-independent data for Galveston Bay. They conclude that the catch-per-unit effort (CPUE; number h−1) of marketable oysters increase 1 to 2 years after years with increased freshwater inflows, and they express concerns that water supply managers may mis-apply the results of Turner (Estuaries and Coasts 29:345–352, 2006) to justify a reduced freshwater inflow to Galveston Bay. I find no relationship between the CPUE of oyster spat or marketable oyster density and …

Primary Spinal Epidural Hydatid Cyst With Intrathoracic Extension, Mohammed Benzagmout, Imane Kamaoui, Khalid Chakour, Mohamed E. Chaoui Jan 2009

Primary Spinal Epidural Hydatid Cyst With Intrathoracic Extension, Mohammed Benzagmout, Imane Kamaoui, Khalid Chakour, Mohamed E. Chaoui

Neurosciences

Spinal epidural localization of hydatid cyst is quite rare. We report a case of a 33-year-old patient who experienced paraparesis over 2 years, with an umbilical sensitive level. A CT scan and MRI showed an intrathoracic multilobar lesion, probably of intra-spinal origin. An anterolateral transpleural surgical approach confirmed the hydatic character of the observed lesion and enabled total spinal cord decompression. No osseous involvement was noted. We report a case of spinal epidural hydatid cyst successfully managed by an anterior approach, and we discuss epidemiological, diagnosis, and therapeutical features of this rare localization of hydatid cyst.

Attachment And The Schools, Jennifer N. Allan Jan 2009

Attachment And The Schools, Jennifer N. Allan

Graduate Research Papers

In order to be effective workers in the schools, school staff members must be able to form some sort of relationship with individual students. The ability of students to form relationships depends upon the attachments they have formed with their caretakers. The purpose of this literature review was to explore different types of attachment, interventions that can be used with students who have attachment issues, and how attachment can affect schools all of which are given from. the perspective of a school counselor. The literature review investigates and summarizes the impact both healthy and unhealthy attachment has on a student …

Combating Incitement To Terrorism On The Internet: Comparative Approaches In The United States And United Kingdom And The Need For An International Solution, Elizabeth M. Renieris Jan 2009

Combating Incitement To Terrorism On The Internet: Comparative Approaches In The United States And United Kingdom And The Need For An International Solution, Elizabeth M. Renieris

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In recent years, terrorist use of the Internet has been gaining in popularity, with more than several thousand radical or extremist websites in existence today. Because the Internet transcends physical and geographic boundaries, combating terrorist incitement on the Internet requires cross-border global cooperation. Although the international community has taken steps to combat the problem with United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1373 and 1624, the state parties to these resolutions have been unable to close the significant holes in the current international legal framework, and there is little evidence that terrorist use of the Internet for purposes of incitement is being …

No Reason To Wait: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Through The Clean Air Act, William Snape Jan 2009

No Reason To Wait: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Through The Clean Air Act, William Snape

PEEL Faculty Scholarship

This paper sets forth a blueprint for achieving greenhouse gas emission reductions under the Clean Air Act. The author hopes this paper will help spur both faster action by the administration under current law, and support for removing the existing Clean Air Act exemptions from ACESA. The Clean Air act provides the successful foundation for the transition to a clean energy future. Any new climate bill must incorporate and build upon this foundation, rather than discarding it in favor of an entirely new, untested system, placing all our eggs in one precarious basket.
