Ending Jim Crow Life Insurance Rates, Mary L. Heen Jan 2009

Ending Jim Crow Life Insurance Rates, Mary L. Heen

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

his Article tells the story of the rise and fall of explicit race-based pricing practices as American life insurance companies responded to changes in the social, economic, and legal status of former slaves. The role of law in that story, from the Civil War to the beginning of this century, illustrates the complex interaction between civil rights reform and private commercial markets. Despite early laws prohibiting race-based life insurance rates, racial discrimination persisted in various forms for over a century due to the strength of the underlying racial ideologies, the rhetorical power of actuarial language, and the structure and regulation …

The Ethical Phenomenon Of Gm-Corn: Anger, Anxiety, And Arrogance In Crossing American Borders, Jules Simon Jan 2009

The Ethical Phenomenon Of Gm-Corn: Anger, Anxiety, And Arrogance In Crossing American Borders, Jules Simon

Departmental Papers (Philosophy)

In terms of phenomenology, I often wonder about the relevance of what I do as a philosopher for the life of those with whom I come into contact. This ‘coming into contact’ happens for me on several levels: as one human among many, as a husband and father and son and brother, as a teacher, as a neighbor, and as country or city dweller. I remember with fondness those times in the late sultry summer months when, as a youth, I would drive with my father to this or that local farm-stand on some remote back road in the hills …

Assessing Stereotype Incongruities Using The N400 Erp Component, Katherine White, Stephen Crites Jr., Jennifer Taylor, Guadalupe Corral

Departmental Papers (Psych)

Numerous discoveries regarding stereotypes have been uncovered by utilizing techniques and methods developed by cognitive psychologists. The present study continues this tradition by borrowing psychophysiological techniques used for the study of memory and language, and applying them to the study of stereotypes. In this study, participants were primed with either the gender category ’Women’ or ’Men’, followed by a word which was either consistent with gender stereotypes (e.g. Women: Nurturing) or inconsistent (e.g. Women: Aggressive). Their task was to indicate whether the words matched or did not match, according to gender stereotypes. Both response times and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) …

Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kalen J. Espy Jan 2009

Reactive Attachment Disorder, Kalen J. Espy

Graduate Research Papers

Reactive Attachment Disorder, or RAD, has several possible causes usually stemming from traumatic childhood events. The attachment disorders were initially explored in 1948 by John Bowlby which led to the attachment theory being established in the 1960's. Attachment is the bond a child makes with other human beings, allowing for a healthy emotional and psychological growth. Attachment is developed primarily from birth to two years of age and up to the age of five.

There are four attachment styles and four phases that a child must go through to develop a healthy attachment to a caregiver. A child who is …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

A series of half-sandwich arene ruthenium complexes containing bidentate thiosemicarbazone ligands have been synthesized and their biological activity investigated. The compounds have the general formula [(6-p-cymene)Ru(R-ATSC)Cl]X (ATSC = 9-anthraldehyde thiosemicarbazone and R = H, CH3 and C6H5). The crystal structure of [(6-p-cymene) Ru(MeATSC)Cl]Cl have been determined and represents the first structurally characterized arene–ruthenium half-sandwich complex with a thiosemicarbazone ligand. The complexes show good cytotoxic profiles against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 (breast adenocarcinoma) as well as HCT 116 and HT-29 (colorectal carcinoma) cell lines.

Infrared Light Activated Floating Micro Stimulators For Neuro-Prosthetic Applications, Kimberlyn M. Gray Jan 2009

Infrared Light Activated Floating Micro Stimulators For Neuro-Prosthetic Applications, Kimberlyn M. Gray

Doctoral Dissertations

The most common failures in neural stimulation implants are due to interconnect complications such as tissue response, lead migration, and lead breakages. The challenge in eliminating interconnects lies in minimizing device size to maintain spatial selectivity required in the CNS. One approach to this problem is a current generating device that can be stimulated by an external signal, such as light or sound. Here, we report the design, construction and testing of rnicrophotodiode devices that can be stimulated remotely with near-infrared (NIR) light to generate current that can be injected locally into the peripheral nervous system. The use of near-infrared …

The Questions And Answers In The Correlation Of Socioeconomic Status And Education, Jennifer Horton Jan 2009

The Questions And Answers In The Correlation Of Socioeconomic Status And Education, Jennifer Horton

Education Masters

There are a large amount of diverse factors that contribute to a student's academic success. Things such as basic needs, a student's culture, the teacher's culture, parent involvement, school and classroom environment, and actual instructional strategies all play a role in a student's daily academic experience. When students are living in an area of poverty, or come from families of a low socio-economic status, one or all of these factors can become compromised. As a result teachers, parents, administrators and community leaders are faced with the challenge of providing a holistic approach to education with limited resources. many times these …

The Achievement Gap, Amy C. Ciaccia

Education Masters

My research topic is "The awareness and Utilization of special education services from an urban vs. suburban perspective and the affect it has on the success rate of students with special needs." What I needed to consider when researching was the factors that can and do contribute to "differences" in the rate of success between all learners, especially in schools and districts that are perceived by many to be "unequal." I do not think it is uncommon of anyone to think that schools in the suburbs are "better" than schools in the city; whether it is in reference to the …

Mineralogical Transformations Controlling Acid Mine Drainage Chemistry, T. Peretyazhko, John M. Zachara, J.-F. Boily, Y. Xia, P.L. Gassman, B.W. Arey, W.D. Burgos

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The role of Fe(III) minerals in controlling acid mine drainage (AMD) chemistry was studied using samples from two AMD sites [Gum Boot (GB) and Fridays-2 (FR)] located in northern Pennsylvania. Chemical extractions, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to identify and characterize Fe(III) phases. The mineralogical analysis revealed schwertmannite and goethite as the principal Fe(III) phases in the sediments. Schwertmannite particles occurred as sub-micron sized spheroids. Their transformation into goethite occurred at the GB site where poorly-crystallized goethite rich in surface-bound sulfate was initially formed. In contrast, no schwertmannite transformation occurred …

From Captivity To The Wild And Back: An Attempt To Release Keiko The Killer Whale, M. Simon, M. B. Hanson, L. Murrey, J. Tougaard, F. Ugarte

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A number of cetaceans have been released into the wild, with research or the improved welfare of the individuals in question as the main goal. In a few cases, releases have been monitored with methods such as telemetry or photo-identification (Gales and Waples 1993, Veit et al. 1997,Wells et al. 1998, Reynolds et al. 2000). As a rule, the animals released successfully into the wild had been captive for relatively short periods of time (e.g., 2 years, Wells et al. 1998), were held in sea pens rather than concrete tanks, and some were released in the company of conspecifics (Veit …

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

In November-December 2007 a widespread seabird mortality event occurred in Monterey Bay, California, USA, coincident with a massive red tide caused by the dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea. Affected birds had a slimy yellow-green material on their feathers, which were saturated with water, and they were severely hypothermic. We determined that foam containing surfactant-like proteins, derived from organic matter of the red tide, coated their feathers and neutralized natural water repellency and insulation. No evidence of exposure to petroleum or other oils or biotoxins were found. This is the first documented case of its kind, but previous similar events may have gone …

Biofuels: Cultivating Energy, Not Invasive Species Jan 2009

Biofuels: Cultivating Energy, Not Invasive Species

National Invasive Species Council

To provide alternatives to petroleum-based energy, the United States (U.S.) government has mandated a greater proportion of plant-based biofuels be integrated into its energy portfolio. However, certain plant species being proposed for biofuel production in the U.S. are invasive species or are likely to escape cultivation and become invasive.

U.S. Executive Order (E.O.) 131121 defines invasive species as “alien [non-native] species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health” and states:

“Each Federal agency whose actions may affect the status of invasive species shall, to the extent practicable and permitted …

Crop Effects On Closed System Element Cycling For Human Life Support In Space, C. L. Mackowiak, P. R. Grossl, R. M. Wheeler

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Nutrient recycling in a space-based Bioregenerative Life Support System (BLSS) will require an understanding of nutrient dosage effects on crop production, plant tissue partitioning, and geochemical fates within crop systems. Sodium (Na+), fluoride (F−), and iodide (I−) are found in human waste streams. These elements were examined using crops in hydroponic systems. Lettuce, radish, spinach, and beet were used to study Na+ uptake and tolerance. Spinach, lettuce, and radish growth were inhibited at 8.0 × 10−2 M Na+ compared to the control. Beet growth improved at 2.0 and 4.0 × 10 …

Exploring Predation And Animal Coloration Through Outdoor Activity, Joseph J. Fontaine, Karie L. Decker

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Although children often characterize animals by the animals' color or pattern. the children seldom understand the evolutionary and ecological factors that favor particular colors. In this ilrticle. we describe two activities that help students understand the distinct evolutionary stmtegies of warning coloration and camoutlage. Because both of these strategies effectively allow prey animals to avoid predation. they can help explain considerable variation in animal coloration.

Seasonal Patterns Of Song Structure Variation In A Suboscine Passerine, Bruce A. Robertson, Joseph J. Fontaine, Elizabeth Loomis Jan 2009

Seasonal Patterns Of Song Structure Variation In A Suboscine Passerine, Bruce A. Robertson, Joseph J. Fontaine, Elizabeth Loomis

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Studies of song and its function in suboscine passerines are rare. We examined spatial and temporal variation in song structure in a wild population of Olive-sided Flycatchers (Contopus cooperi) and tested among hypotheses explaining this variation. Repeatable variation in song type was observed both within and among individuals. More than 10% of territorial males expressed atypical song types, i.e., permutations of sequential missing and repeated elements of the typical adult song. Atypical songs were predominantly expressed by unpaired males independent of habitat type. A small fraction of males sang atypical song through the middle of the breeding season, …
