Human Dimensions Of Invasive Vertebrate Species Management, Gary W. Witmer, G. M. Keirn, N. Hawley, C. Martin, J. K. Reaser Jan 2009

Human Dimensions Of Invasive Vertebrate Species Management, Gary W. Witmer, G. M. Keirn, N. Hawley, C. Martin, J. K. Reaser

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

Invasive vertebrate species can cause substantial damage to natural resources, property, crops, livestock, and pose a disease hazard to humans, native wildlife and domestic animals. Numerous island species have become extinct or are threatened with extinction from invasive species. The high rate of invasive species introductions continues because of the large volumes of world trade and international travel. Humans are often responsible for introductions, but are also the key to their prevention, management, and eradication. However, many of the values and perceptions of invasive species vary among humans. Hence, the prevention and control of invasive vertebrates often requires adjusting human …

Simulation Of Corn Stover And Distillers Grains Gasification With Aspen Plus, Ajay Kumar, Hossein Noureddini, Yaşar Demirel, David Jones, Milford Hanna Jan 2009

Simulation Of Corn Stover And Distillers Grains Gasification With Aspen Plus, Ajay Kumar, Hossein Noureddini, Yaşar Demirel, David Jones, Milford Hanna

Yaşar Demirel Publications

A model was developed to simulate the performance of a lab‐scale gasifier and predict the flowrate and composition of product from given biomass composition and gasifier operating conditions using Aspen Plus software. Mass balance, energy balance, and minimization of Gibbs free energy during the gasification were applied to determine the product gas composition. Carbon conversion efficiency and tar content were provided to the model as inputs as these could not be predicted by the model based on minimization of Gibbs free energy. Experiments for validation of the model were performed on a lab‐scale fluidized bed gasifier using corn stover and …

Tuning The Electronic Properties Of The Golden Buckyball By Endohedral Doping: M@Au16− (M=Ag,Zn, In), Lei-Ming Wang, Rhitankar Pal, Wei Huang, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

The golden Au16- cage is doped systematically with an external atom of different valence electrons: Ag, Zn, and In. The electronic and structural properties of the doped clusters, MAu16- (M =Ag,Zn, In), are investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. It is observed that the characteristic spectral features of 16-, reflecting its near tetrahedral (Td) symmetry, are retained in the photoelectron spectra of MAu16-, suggesting endohedral structures with little distortion from the parent Au16- cage for the doped clusters. Density functional calculations show that …

Magnetic Doping Of The Golden Cage Cluster M@Au16− (M=Fe,Co,Ni), Lei-Ming Wang, Jaeil Bai, Anne Lechtken, Wei Huang, Detlef Schooss, Manfred Kappes, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Lai-Sheng Wang

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the golden cage doped with a transition-metal atom, MAu16- (M =Fe,Co,Ni), are investigated using trapped ion electron diffraction, photoelectron spectroscopy, and density-functional theory. The best agreement to experiment is obtained for endohedral M@Au16- structures but with considerable distortions to the parent Au16- cage. Fe@Au16- and Co@Au16- are found to have similar structures with C2 symmetry while a C1 structure is obtained for Ni@Au16-. The 4s electrons are observed to transfer to the Au16 cage, whereas atomiclike …

Becoming Jane Jacobs First Draft 2009, Peter L. Laurence Jan 2009

Becoming Jane Jacobs First Draft 2009, Peter L. Laurence

Publications

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), did not like the term “urban design” and did not describe herself as an architectural critic, but contributed significantly to the development of American architectural criticism and the new field of urban design. Although relatively little is known about Jacobs’ intellectual development, her influences, and her early writing career, before Death and Life was published, Jacobs was already among the most influential critics of urban renewal in the country. The book was a culmination of many years of studying and writing about the city; of working …

Chicks With Picks: An Ethnography Of Female Rock Instrumentalists In Tampa, Fl, Adele Fournet Jan 2009

Chicks With Picks: An Ethnography Of Female Rock Instrumentalists In Tampa, Fl, Adele Fournet

Theses & ETDs

This ethnography of female rock instrumentalists playing in bands in the Tampa, FL area explores the social significance of why there are so few female instrumentalists in this scenefive percent of the total number of rock musicians. Drawing on the ethnographic strategies of interview and participant observation and the theoretical insight of Pierre Bourdieu, this research more specifically seeks answers to the following questions: First, why are there so few women playing instruments in bands in this area? Second, how do some women get involved in this scene as instrumentalists despite the statistical odds against them? Finally, what are the …

Searching For The Author's Hand: Narrators, Readers, And The Fictive World In Vladimir Nabokov's Short Fiction, Laura Hampton Jan 2009

Searching For The Author's Hand: Narrators, Readers, And The Fictive World In Vladimir Nabokov's Short Fiction, Laura Hampton

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis I explore the various interactions between writing, narrators, and readers in Vladimir Nabokov's short fiction. In the first chapter I discuss "Mademoiselle O," and the narrator's attempt to retrieve the memory of his childhood governess from the past. By weaving detailed memories into a story, the narrator helps anchor her memory in the present, and achieves greater understanding of her character. The theme of writing lives continues in the second chapter on "Recruiting." The narrator tells a detailed story about a man who is actually an invented character, inspired by a stranger the narrator sees on a …

Herbivory In The Amazon Lowland Tropical Rainforest, With A Special Focus On Myrmecophytes (Genus Tococa), Meghan Mcavoy

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines several aspects of herbivory with a specific focus on myrmecophytes from the genus Tococa in the Amazon lowland tropical rainforest. Field work was conducted at several different sites in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, selected for their proximity to the Amazon Conservatory of Tropical Studies (ACTS) canopy walkway. This enabled research at different rainforest canopy levels. I analyzed the percentage of leaves with signs of herbivory versus those with none. Of 2,000 leaves surveyed, 92.5% show signs of herbivory while only 7.5% had not been fed upon. I compared herbivory between two species of plants from the Tococa …

The Legal System Of The Third Reich: Issues Of Complicity Within The Legal Profession, Chad Wilson Bickerton Jan 2009

The Legal System Of The Third Reich: Issues Of Complicity Within The Legal Profession, Chad Wilson Bickerton

Theses & ETDs

This thesis attempts to reconcile current applications of legal history with dominant historical theories on the legal system of the Third Reich in Germany from 1933 to 1945. From these observations, a redefinition of the debate of the extent to which the legal profession in the Nazi state was complicit in its crimes is undertaken. Chief among these arguments is the extent to which legal positivism accounted for the silent obedience of the legal profession against Nazi jurisprudence which enacted oppressive measures across the territory of the Third Reich. A special focus is paid to the plight of Jews within …

Over The Counter But Under The Radar: Direct-To-Consumer Genetics Tests And Fda Regulation Of Medical Devices, Lauren B. Solberg Jan 2009

Over The Counter But Under The Radar: Direct-To-Consumer Genetics Tests And Fda Regulation Of Medical Devices, Lauren B. Solberg

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Direct-to-consumer genetic tests are laboratory-developed tests that are marketed and sold directly to consumers. They typically do not require a prescription or any other involvement from a consumer's health care provider. Consumers order these tests online and return a specimen, usually a saliva sample, directly to the laboratory. The results are mailed directly to the consumer, and no health care provider or insurance company need ever learn the contents of these results. The FDA does not currently regulate direct-to-consumer genetic tests, though tests for hundreds of different diseases are readily available to the public.

The FDA's approach to regulating genetic …

Two Notions Of Privacy Online, Avner Levin, Patricia S. Abril Jan 2009

Two Notions Of Privacy Online, Avner Levin, Patricia S. Abril

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Users of social networking websites tend to disclose much personal information online yet seem to retain some form of an expectation of privacy. Is this expectation of privacy always unreasonable? How do users of online social networks define their expectations of privacy online?

These questions were the impetus behind an empirical study, the findings of which are presented in this Article. The project, simultaneously conducted in Canada, at Ryerson University, and in the United States, at the University of Miami, consisted of a survey regarding personal information protection and expectations of privacy on online social networks (OSNs). Approximately 2,500 young …

Respecting An Establishment Of Religion, Richard Hamilton Jan 2009

Respecting An Establishment Of Religion, Richard Hamilton

Philosophy Book Chapters

A striking feature of minimally well-functioning legal systems is their ability to decide cases which turn on morally contested concepts. A natural lawyer, for whom there is an intimate connection between law and morality, may view this as proof of an underlying moral consensus which obtains despite the superficial appearance of moral disagreement It is more plausible, I suggest, to view this facility in terms of the legal positivist insight that law is a mechanism for social control and regulation, which operates despite the lack of moral consensus. In the present climate, there can be few concepts more contested than …
