Regional Differences In The Spatial And Temporal Heterogeneity Of Oceanographic Habitat Used By Steller Sea Lions, Michelle E. Lander, Thomas R. Loughlin, Miles G. Logsdon, Glenn R. Vanblaricom, Brian S. Fadely, Lowell W. Fritz Jan 2009

Regional Differences In The Spatial And Temporal Heterogeneity Of Oceanographic Habitat Used By Steller Sea Lions, Michelle E. Lander, Thomas R. Loughlin, Miles G. Logsdon, Glenn R. Vanblaricom, Brian S. Fadely, Lowell W. Fritz

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Over the past three decades, the decline and altered spatial distribution of the western stock of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) in Alaska have been attributed to changes in the distribution or abundance of their prey due to the cumulative effects of fisheries and environmental perturbations. During this period, dietary prey occurrence and diet diversity were related to population decline within metapopulation regions of the western stock of Steller sea lions, suggesting that environmental conditions may be variable among regions. The objective of this study, therefore, was to examine regional differences in the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of …

The Relevance Of The International Classification Of Functioning, Disability And Health (Icf) To Mental Disorders And Their Treatment, Geoffrey M. Reed, William D. Spaulding, Lynn F. Bufka Jan 2009

The Relevance Of The International Classification Of Functioning, Disability And Health (Icf) To Mental Disorders And Their Treatment, Geoffrey M. Reed, William D. Spaulding, Lynn F. Bufka

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article examines the potential usefulness of the ICF in the treatment of mental disorders. We suggest that there is a poor fit between the nature of mental disorders and the dominant model of health care based on the treatment of acute medical illness. An overemphasis on diagnosis has contributed to a bias toward pharmacotherapy and underuse of psychological treatments for people with mental disorders. Mental disorders are more accurately conceptualized as chronic conditions, in which the person’s pattern of functioning rather than diagnosis is most important in determining what services are needed. This is particularly the case for people with …

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem Jan 2009

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

People have always given aid and comfort to each other during times of disaster. However, attempts to structure and professionalize this assistance are fairly recent developments. Disaster mental health, as an evolving field of practice and study, is a collection of interventions and practices that are designed to address incident-specific stress reactions, rather than ongoing or developmental mental health needs. Traditional mental health practice is based on a medical model, with a clinician seeing a patient in an office setting. Disaster mental health introduces a paradigm shift, requiring that practitioners (clinicians and indigenous helpers) work with individuals and whole communities …

Plants express three phylogenetic classes of hemoglobins (Hb) based on sequence analyses. Class 1 and 2 Hbs are full-length globins with the classical eight helix Mb-like fold, whereas Class 3 plant Hbs resemble the truncated globins found in bacteria. With the exception of the specialized leghemoglobins, the physiological functions of these plant hemoglobins remain unknown. We have reviewed and, in some cases, measured new oxygen binding properties of a large number of Class 1 and 2 plant nonsymbiotic Hbs and leghemoglobins. We found that sequence classification correlates with distinct extents of hexacoordination with the distal histidine and markedly different overall …

Due to the rapid rate of worldwide consumption of nonrenewable fossil fuels, production of biofuels from cellulosic sources is receiving increased research emphasis. Here, we review the feasibility to produce lignocellulosic biomass on marginal lands that are not well-suited for conventional crop production. Large areas of these marginal lands are located in the central prairies of North America once dominated by tallgrass species. In this article, we review the existing literature, current work, and potential of two native species of the tallgrass prairie, prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), and little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) as candidates for commercial production of …

Without Improved Security, Biodefense Laboratories May Double As Arsenals For Terrorists, Jim Shen Jan 2009

Without Improved Security, Biodefense Laboratories May Double As Arsenals For Terrorists, Jim Shen

Quill & Scope

In the wake of the "Amerithrax” anthrax attacks of September and October 2001, the United States committed a large amount of funding towards biodefense research. With this commitment came a large increase in the number of federally-funded and private laboratories conducting biodefense research that was not well-regulated by the federal government. The result is that many laboratories are currently studying dangerous agents such as anthrax with inadequate security measures and little oversight. Unless reform is enacted to correct this situation, these laboratories will continue to represent a potential threat to public safety.

Reflections On Capital Punishment, Rob Warden Jan 2009

Reflections On Capital Punishment, Rob Warden

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Authored by the Executive Director of the Center on Wrongful Convictions, this powerful article reviews the many different arguments against the death penalty and uses a multitude of case discussions to show how the death penalty works, not in theory, but in practice. Some of these arguments include: the death penalty does not have a demonstrable deterrent effect; it costs more to maintain the system than to imprison murderers for life; many wrongfully condemned defendants have been saved by the serendipitous discovery of evidence not available during trial; innocent persons have been executed; the death penalty has been applied in …

Nicotine-Evoked Conditioned Responding Is Dependent On Concentration Of Sucrose Unconditioned Stimulus, Jennifer E. Murray, Rachel D. Penrod, Rick A. Bevins Jan 2009

Nicotine-Evoked Conditioned Responding Is Dependent On Concentration Of Sucrose Unconditioned Stimulus, Jennifer E. Murray, Rachel D. Penrod, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have shown that the interoceptive nicotine conditional stimulus (CS) functions similarly to exteroceptive CSs such as lights or environments. For instance, the appetitive conditioned response (CR) evoked when nicotine is repeatedly paired with sucrose presentations (the unconditioned stimulus; US) is sensitive to changes in training dose (CS salience) and the contiguity between the CS effects and sucrose. The current study was conducted to extend this research by examining the possible role of US intensity in CR acquisition and maintenance. Rats were trained using one of four sucrose concentrations: 0, 4, 16, or 32% (w/v). On nicotine sessions (0.4 …

Reduced Genomic Potential For Secreted Plant Cell-Wall-Degrading Enzymes In The Ectomycorrhizal Fungus Amanita Bisporigera, Based On The Secretome Of Trichoderma Reesei, Subashini Nagendran, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Janet M. Paper, Nighat Aslam, Jonathan D. Walton Jan 2009

Reduced Genomic Potential For Secreted Plant Cell-Wall-Degrading Enzymes In The Ectomycorrhizal Fungus Amanita Bisporigera, Based On The Secretome Of Trichoderma Reesei, Subashini Nagendran, Heather E. Hallen-Adams, Janet M. Paper, Nighat Aslam, Jonathan D. Walton

Heather Hallen-Adams Publications

Based on the analysis of its genome sequence, the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) basidiomycetous fungus Laccaria bicolor was shown to be lacking many of the major classes of secreted enzymes that depolymerize plant cell wall polysaccharides. To test whether this is also a feature of other ECM fungi, we searched a survey genome database of Amanita bisporigera with the proteins found in the secretome of Trichoderma reesei (syn. Hypocrea jecorina), a biochemically well-characterized industrial fungus. Additional proteins were also used as queries to compensate for major groups of cell-wall-degrading enzymes lacking in the secretome of T. reesei and to substantiate conclusions …

A Structure-Based Approach For Detection Of Thiol Oxidoreductases And Their Catalytic Redox-Active Cysteine Residues, Stefano M. Marino, Vadim N. Gladyshev Jan 2009

A Structure-Based Approach For Detection Of Thiol Oxidoreductases And Their Catalytic Redox-Active Cysteine Residues, Stefano M. Marino, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Cysteine (Cys) residues often play critical roles in proteins, for example, in the formation of structural disulfide bonds, metal binding, targeting proteins to the membranes, and various catalytic functions. However, the structural determinants for various Cys functions are not clear. Thiol oxidoreductases, which are enzymes containing catalytic redox-active Cys residues, have been extensively studied, but even for these proteins there is little understanding of what distinguishes their catalytic redox Cys from other Cys functions. Herein, we characterized thiol oxidoreductases at a structural level and developed an algorithm that can recognize these enzymes by (i) analyzing amino acid and secondary structure …
