Seed of Mucuna pruriens (Velvet beans) has been prescribed by traditional medicine practitioners in Nigeria as a prophylactic oral antisnake remedy. In the present studies, we investigated the protective effects of M. pruriens seed extract (MPE) against histopathological changes induced by intravenous injection of Naja sputatrix (Malayan cobra) venom in rats pretreated with the seed extract. Examination by light microscope revealed that the venom induced histopathological changes in heart and blood vessels in liver, but no effect on brain, lung, kidney and spleen. The induced changes were prevented by pretreatment of the rats with MPE. Our results suggest that MPE …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Wingless-type protein (Wnt) is a family of 19 secreted glycoproteins that function as signaling transducers for cell-cell interaction, cell growth and differentiation. Wnt-1, a highly transforming member, has been implicated in tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of this cell signaling molecule in the development and progression of primary ameloblastoma and their recurrent tumors. Wnt-1 expression patterns were examined immunohistochemically in 22 primary and 14 recurrent ameloblastomas. These collectively consisted of the following subtypes: conventional (CA) (n=22), desmoplastic (DA) (n=2) and unicystic (UA) (n=12) ameloblastoma. Results demonstrated that CA (n=20/22; 90.9), DA (n=2/2; 100) and …

It has been reported that there are structural differences in the muropeptides of the cell wall in penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae. The cell wall composition and variation of the murMN operon sequence of S. pneumoniae strains with different penicillin susceptibilities were investigated. PCR amplification and sequencing of the murM and murN genes were carried out on three selected strains of S. pneumoniae. The cell wall was then extracted and elucidated using Fourier Transfer InfraRed (FTIR) Spectroscopy, followed by proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy. The sequences of the murM and murN genes were shown to be highly conserved while FTIR and …

Multiplex Pcr For Simultaneous Detection Of Virulence Genes In Escherichia Coli, Kwai Lin Thong, Ke Xin Yu
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli infection is a major cause of public health problems in developing countries. In view of the deficits and limitations of conventional methods of detecting the virulence determinants, a multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay was optimized and developed to provide an effective, rapid and specific diagnostic tool to simultaneously detect virulence genes such as heatstable toxin 1 (ST1), heat-labile toxin 1 (LT1), heat-labile toxin 2 (LT2), verotoxin1 (VT1), verotoxin 2 (VT2) and attachment and effacement (eaeA) in pathogenic E. coli. Five sets of primers targeting these six virulence genes were optimized by using postitive control …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Much attention has been made in pesticide analysis to improve agricultural productivity and control these compounds in food and environmental samples. Different methods have been applied in pesticide analysis, among these; methods based on chromatographic separation with mass spectrometric detection have been extremely useful methods for determination of pesticide residues. Despite employing of powerful instrumental techniques, the risk of interference increases with the complexity of the matrix studied, so sample preparation prior to instrumental analysis is necessary. This article reviews the analytical characteristics of the different sample preparation methods for determination of pesticide residues in food and environmental samples and …

Influence Of Water Deficit During Different Growth And Developmental Stages On The Contribution Of Stored Pre-Anthesis Assimilates To Grain In Selected Durum And Bread Wheat Genotypes, Ali Akbar Moayedi, Amru Nasrulhaq Boyce, Syed Shahar Barakbah
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Under water deficit conditions, declining photosynthesis and the subsequent decline in assimilates during the grain filling stage can increase the contribution of pre-anthesis assimilates stored in the stems, to grain filling in order to prevent severe reduction in grain yield. Results of the present study, which tested five durum and bread wheat genotypes under four irrigation regimes in different growth and developmental stages, have shown that apart from the contribution of pre-anthesis assimilates to grain filling, which increased during the one-leaf until grain filling period under water deficit, dry matter translocation and dry matter translocation efficiency decreased at the floral …

Historical Winter Diets Of Mink (Mustela Vison) In Nebraska, Justin D. Hoffman, Sam Wilson, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Currently there are no published accounts of the specific diets of mink (Mustela vison) in Nebraska. Herein, we present findings of an historic data set on the winter diets of mink in Nebraska. Gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of mink were collected by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission during the 1946-1947 fur trapping season. The contents of the GI tracts were identified as specifically as possible and percentage of occurrence and percentage of total volume was calculated for each prey item. Mammals and bony fish were the most encountered items. Among mammals, rabbits and muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) …

Trust & Transparency: Promoting Efficient Corporate Disclosure Through Fiduciary-Based Disclosure, Michael R. Siebecker
Trust & Transparency: Promoting Efficient Corporate Disclosure Through Fiduciary-Based Disclosure, Michael R. Siebecker
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Could embracing the philosophy of “encapsulated trust” as the basis for a fiduciary duty of disclosure improve the integrity and effectiveness of corporate communications? The question arises because a tragedy of transparency threatens the viability of the burgeoning corporate social responsibility (CSR) movement, where consumers and investors employ various social, environmental, or ethical screening criteria before purchasing a company's stock or products. In an efficient market, fully informed consumers and investors could reward companies that engage in CSR by purchasing their products or stock and, conversely, punish companies that fail to engage in desired practices by refusing to purchase their …

Empathy Conditioned Conservation: "Walking-In-The-Shoes-Of-Others" As A Conservation Farmer, Robert Sheeder, Gary D. Lynne
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Since the destruction and despair caused by the dust bowl of the 1930’s, Americans and their government have taken a keen interest in natural resource conservation policy on agricultural land throughout the country. As a reflection of this, the farm bill of 1936 entitled the “Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act” included for the first time provisions that provided payments and support to farmers willing to employ soil conservation measures on their farms (Cain and Lovejoy, 2004). While the main purpose of this bill was to provide financial support to impoverished farmers dealing with low commodity prices, the fact remains …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Observations of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), larvae infesting plots of Miscanthus × giganteus Greef and Deuter ex Hodkinson and Renvoize prompted laboratory-based tests of survival, development, and feeding preferences on leaf tissue from M. × giganteus and switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L. Survival from hatch to pupation was >70 and 50% for fall armyworms reared on switchgrass and M. × giganteus, respectively, although survival of the S. frugiperda rice strain was significantly greater than the corn strain on both crops. Developmental times from hatch to pupation or adult emergence showed effects of crop and S. frugiperda …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center
As part of an International Field Trip in Biology class through the Study Abroad Program at Iowa State University, we had as a goal to impress university students of various academic backgrounds with the insects of the Serengeti region in east Africa. The Matthiessen quote hints at our a priori expectation and main obstacle—wondrous distraction. The promoted goal of the field trip was to educate and expose students to the natural history of northern Tanzania, with a focus on the mammalian and avian fauna, the varied grassland-bushland-montane forest ecosystems, Rift Valley geology, and Maasai culture. The course, conducted during 2005, …

The Effect Of Adjuvants, Pesticide Formulation, And Spray Nozzle Tips On Spray Droplet Size, Robert N. Klein, Jeffrey A. Golus, Kelli L. Nelms
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
Many factors, including adjuvants, pesticide formulations, and nozzle tips, affect spray droplet size. It is important to understand these factors as spray droplet size affects both drift and efficacy of pesticides, which is a main concern with pesticide application. A laser particle analyzer was used to determine the spray droplet size and distributions of a range of formulations sprayed through several types of nozzle tips. Nozzles included were extended range flat fan sizes 11003 and 11005 (Spraying Systems XR), air induction flat fan sizes 11005 and 11004 (AI) air induction extended range flat fan size 11005 (AIXR), preorifice flat fan …

Participatory varietal selection (PVS) led to the identification of Population-22 and its later release as Manakamana-3. Subsequently further mother–baby trials tested five unreleased open-pollinated varieties (OPVs), ZM-621, Shitala, Population-45, Hill Pool White, and Hill Pool Yellow to compare them with Manakamana-3. Farmers again preferred Manakamana-3 as well as ZM-621 for their stable, higher grain yield, and for other traits such as stay-green, non-lodging, large white grains, and tolerance to foliar diseases. However, Manakamana- 3 and ZM-621 both had late maturity, open husks and dented grain. Both were tested with farmers on-farm coordinated farmers field trials (CFFTs) and had not been …
