Standing And Future Generations: Does Massachusetts V. Epa Open Standing For Generations To Come?, Bradford Mank

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Many issues, especially potential environmental catastrophes caused by climate change, affect not just the living, but also future generations. The bias in our political system against addressing the interests of future generations poses serious obstacles in solving long-term environmental problems such as global warming. Because future generations cannot vote, unelected federal judges are more suited to protect their interests than the political branches.

An important question is whether anyone has standing to sue on behalf of future generations in the federal courts. The Supreme Court's Article III standing test requires plaintiffs to demonstrate that they have personally suffered an injury …

Factors Influencing Early Detection Of Breast Cancer In African American Women, Tamrah Joy Parker

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Background. African American women are more likely to have breast cancer diagnosed at a later stage than Caucasian women and with a five year death rate 1.5 times greater than Caucasian women. Mammography screening detects breast cancer in its early stages and can reduce mortality.

Objective. To examine factors influencing early detection of breast cancer for African American women.

Methods. A convenience sample of 39 African American women 50 years of age and older was selected from two local Baptist churches in eastern North Carolina. Eligibility criteria included ability to read and write in English with no prior or present …

A Study Of Program Completion And Attrition In One Baccalaureate Nursing Program In The Southeastern United States, Lori J. Shrock Jan 2009

A Study Of Program Completion And Attrition In One Baccalaureate Nursing Program In The Southeastern United States, Lori J. Shrock

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Already facing a national hospital and long-term care registered nurse (RN) shortage, the current number of potential nurse candidates successfully completing baccalaureate nursing programs (BNPs) is not sufficient to meet the estimated demand for baccalaureate-prepared nurses in the United States of America (U.S.) and worldwide. Yet program attrition due to varying reasons leads to graduating nursing classes that are below the clinical program's admission limit in a particular BNP in the Southeastern U.S.--often considerably lower. The study used a convenience sample of all current or former BNP students enrolled in the university from the fall of 2004 to the spring …

Temporal Lenses For Attosecond And Femtosecond Electron Pulses, Shawn A. Hilbert, Cornelis J. Uiterwaal, Brett E. Barwick, Herman Batelaan, Ahmed H. Zewail

C.J.G.J. Uiterwaal Publications

Here, we describe the ‘‘temporal lens’’ concept that can be used for the focus and magnification of ultrashort electron packets in the time domain. The temporal lenses are created by appropriately synthesizing optical pulses that interact with electrons through the ponderomotive force. With such an arrangement, a temporal lens equation with a form identical to that of conventional light optics is derived. The analog of ray diagrams, but for electrons, are constructed to help the visualization of the process of compressing electron packets. It is shown that such temporal lenses not only compensate for electron pulse broadening due to velocity …

Tupi Featherwork And The Dynamics Of Intercultural Exchange In Early Modern Brazil, Amy J. Buono Jan 2009

Tupi Featherwork And The Dynamics Of Intercultural Exchange In Early Modern Brazil, Amy J. Buono

Art Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"The Tupi of sixteenth- and seventeenth century coastal Brazil were renowned as fiercely warlike and, more sensationally, as cannibals. They were also famed for their ritual featherwork capes made from scarlet ibis feathers, which were closely associated with both war and anthropophagic rituals (see figure). For the semi-nomadic Tupi, featherwork was highly valued, the capes being among the only things that they carefully preserved and carried with them as they moved from site to site."

C2 Domain Ontology Within Our Lifetime, Leslie Winters, Andreas Tolk Jan 2009

C2 Domain Ontology Within Our Lifetime, Leslie Winters, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Agile Command and Control (C2) requires agile information sharing with an increasingly wide variety of military and non-military partners. While current net-centric approaches may improve information sharing within a particular niche of C2, they do not support information sharing across the larger C2 domain. Although not a silver bullet, the development and application of a C2 domain ontology to improve C2 data and service integration appears to be increasingly realistic. In fact, there are several examples of successful ontology applications in domains such as medicine, biology, and engineering, and the new discipline of Applied Ontology is emerging. C2 data, architecture, …

Applying The Information Age Combat Model: Quantitative Analysis Of Network Centric Operations, Sean Deller, Shannon R. Bowling, Ghaith A. Rabadi, Andreas Tolk, Michael I. Bell

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The nature of and the approach to command and control is evolving in order to meet the challenges of Information Age warfare. One of the main tasks of command and control is the arrangement of the assets within a combat force in order to ensure their ability to manage and exploit information. Connectivity between the various assets represents existence, capacity, reliability, and other attributes of links establishing the connectivity. The Information Age Combat Model was introduced by Cares in 2005 to contribute to the development of an understanding of the influence of connectivity on force effectiveness that can lead eventually …

Casco Bay Shorebird Monitoring Project: Year One Revised 2009 Report, Slade Moore

Publications

The objective of this project was to initiate a multi-year, collaborative shorebird monitoring program under the auspices of the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership. Project partners are provided in Appendix A. This first year of the project focused primarily on a subset of Casco Bay shorebird areas previously designated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). Although some knowledge exists of shorebird habitat within the Casco Bay region, several years of uninterrupted annual monitoring by this project is anticipated to more accurately characterize shorebird use of distinct sites in this system. Depending on the length of this time …

A Novel Signaling Network Essential For Regulating Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Development, Olga E. Petrova, Karin Sauer Jan 2009

A Novel Signaling Network Essential For Regulating Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Development, Olga E. Petrova, Karin Sauer

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The important human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been linked to numerous biofilm-related chronic infections. Here, we demonstrate that biofilm formation following the transition to the surface attached lifestyle is regulated by three previously undescribed two-component systems: BfiSR (PA4196-4197) harboring an RpoD-like domain, an OmpR-like BfmSR (PA4101-4102), and MifSR (PA5511-5512) belonging to the family of NtrC-like transcriptional regulators. These two-component systems become sequentially phosphorylated during biofilm formation. Inactivation of bfiS, bfmR, and mifR arrested biofilm formation at the transition to the irreversible attachment, maturation-1 and -2 stages, respectively, as indicated by analyses of biofilm architecture, and protein and phosphoprotein patterns. Moreover, …

Profiles Of Adolescent Identity Development: Response To An Intervention For Alcohol/Other Drug Problems, Larry F. Forthun, Marilyn J. Montgomery Jan 2009

Profiles Of Adolescent Identity Development: Response To An Intervention For Alcohol/Other Drug Problems, Larry F. Forthun, Marilyn J. Montgomery

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

The purpose of this study was to examine identity development among adolescents participating in an after-school alcohol/other drug (AOD) abuse intervention program (8 females and 12 males, ages 14–17) to identify how identity development was associated with intervention success. To achieve this goal we (a) garnered information from two identity interviews conducted during the first week of the intervention and 6 to 8 weeks later; (b) adopted a qualitative, person-centered analytical strategy to identify identity profiles; and (c) examined the intervention response of the adolescents, as recorded in intervention documents, in the different identity profile groups. Analyses revealed five identity …

Particle Length-Dependent Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials Toxicity And Bioactivity, Raymond F. Hamilton Jr, Nianqiang Wu, Dale Porter, Mary Buford, Michael Wolfarth, Andrij Holian Jan 2009

Particle Length-Dependent Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials Toxicity And Bioactivity, Raymond F. Hamilton Jr, Nianqiang Wu, Dale Porter, Mary Buford, Michael Wolfarth, Andrij Holian

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have considerable beneficial uses as photocatalysts and solar cells. It has been established for many years that pigment-grade TiO2 (200 nm sphere) is relatively inert when internalized into a biological model system (in vivo or in vitro). For this reason, TiO2 nanomaterials are considered an attractive alternative in applications where biological exposures will occur. Unfortunately, metal oxides on the nanoscale (one dimension < 100 nm) may or may not exhibit the same toxic potential as the original material. A further complicating issue is the effect of modifying or engineering of the nanomaterial to be structurally and geometrically different from the original material.

Results

TiO2 nanospheres, short (< 5 μm) and long (> 15 μm) nanobelts were synthesized, characterized and tested for biological activity using primary murine alveolar macrophages and in vivo in mice. This study demonstrates that alteration of anatase …

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Discovery In Rainbow Trout By Deep Sequencing Of A Reduced Representation Library, Cecilia C. Sanchez, Timothy P L Smith, Ralph T. Wiedmann, Roger L. Vallejo, Mohamed Salem, Jianbo Yao, Caird E. Rexroad Iii

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

To enhance capabilities for genomic analyses in rainbow trout, such as genomic selection, a large suite of polymorphic markers that are amenable to high-throughput genotyping protocols must be identified. Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) have been used for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discovery in salmonids. In those strategies, the salmonid semi-tetraploid genomes often led to assemblies of paralogous sequences and therefore resulted in a high rate of false positive SNP identification. Sequencing genomic DNA using primers identified from ESTs proved to be an effective but time consuming methodology of SNP identification in rainbow trout, therefore not suitable for high throughput …

A Bacterial Artificial Chromosome Library For The Australian Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus) And Its Utilization In Gene Isolation And Genome Characterization, Xueyan Shan, David A. Ray, John A. Bunge, Daniel G. Peterson Jan 2009

A Bacterial Artificial Chromosome Library For The Australian Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus Porosus) And Its Utilization In Gene Isolation And Genome Characterization, Xueyan Shan, David A. Ray, John A. Bunge, Daniel G. Peterson

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Crocodilians (Order Crocodylia) are an ancient vertebrate group of tremendous ecological, social, and evolutionary importance. They are the only extant reptilian members of Archosauria, a monophyletic group that also includes birds, dinosaurs, and pterosaurs. Consequently, crocodilian genomes represent a gateway through which the molecular evolution of avian lineages can be explored. To facilitate comparative genomics within Crocodylia and between crocodilians and other archosaurs, we have constructed a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library for the Australian saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. This is the first BAC library for a crocodile and only the second BAC resource for a crocodilian.

Human Telomere Length Correlates To The Size Of The Associated Chromosome Arm, Jasen L. Wise, Richard J. Crout, Daniel W. Mcneil, Robert J. Weyant, Mary L. Marazita, Sharon L. Wenger Jan 2009

Human Telomere Length Correlates To The Size Of The Associated Chromosome Arm, Jasen L. Wise, Richard J. Crout, Daniel W. Mcneil, Robert J. Weyant, Mary L. Marazita, Sharon L. Wenger

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The majority of human telomere length studies have focused on the overall length of telomeres within a cell. In fact, very few studies have examined telomere length for individual chromosome arms. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between chromosome arm size and the relative length of the associated telomere. Quantitative Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (Q-FISH) was used to measure the relative telomere length of each chromosome arm in metaphases from cultured lymphocytes of 17 individuals. A statistically significant positive correlation (r = 0.6) was found between telomere length and the size of the associated chromosome arm, …

Cryptic Subtelomeric Rearrangements And X Chromosome Mosaicism: A Study Of 565 Apparently Normal Individuals With Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization, Jasen L. Wise, Richard J. Crout, Daniel W. Mcneil, Robert J. Weyant, Mary L. Marazita, Sharon L. Wenger Jan 2009

Cryptic Subtelomeric Rearrangements And X Chromosome Mosaicism: A Study Of 565 Apparently Normal Individuals With Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization, Jasen L. Wise, Richard J. Crout, Daniel W. Mcneil, Robert J. Weyant, Mary L. Marazita, Sharon L. Wenger

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Five percent of patients with unexplained mental retardation have been attributed to cryptic unbalanced subtelomeric rearrangements. Half of these affected individuals have inherited the rearrangement from a parent who is a carrier for a balanced translocation. However, the frequency of carriers for cryptic balanced translocations is unknown. To determine this frequency, 565 phenotypically normal unrelated individuals were examined for balanced subtelomeric rearrangements using Fluorescent In Situ hybridization (FISH) probes for all subtelomere regions. While no balanced subtelomeric rearrangements were identified, three females in this study were determined to be mosaic for the X chromosome. Mosaicism for XXX cell lines were …

Discrepant Comorbidity Between Minority And White Suicides: A National Multiple Cause-Of-Death Analysis, Ian R H Rockett, Yinjuan Lian, Steven Stack, Alan M. Ducatman, Shuhui Wang Jan 2009

Discrepant Comorbidity Between Minority And White Suicides: A National Multiple Cause-Of-Death Analysis, Ian R H Rockett, Yinjuan Lian, Steven Stack, Alan M. Ducatman, Shuhui Wang

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Clinician training deficits and a low and declining autopsy rate adversely impact the quality of death certificates in the United States. Self-report and records data for the general population indicate that proximate mental and physical health of minority suicides was at least as poor as that of white suicides.

Methods

This cross-sectional mortality study uses data from Multiple Cause-of-Death (MCOD) public use files for 1999–2003 to describe and evaluate comorbidity among black, Hispanic, and white suicides. Unintentional injury decedents are the referent for multivariate analyses.

Results

One or more mentions of comorbid psychopathology are documented on the death certificates …
