Hampton-Seabrook Estuary Habitat Restoration Compendium, Alyson L. Eberhardt, David M. Burdick

PREP Reports & Publications

The goal of this report is to identify restoration opportunities within the watershed derived from data on habitat change. Many other factors exist that are important in the identification and selection of restoration projects, including water quality and non-point source pollution, water withdrawal, harbor maintenance, recreational impacts, human history, and socioeconomic factors, among others. Although information regarding these factors is not explicitly included in this analysis, these factors must be considered and addressed as they may limit the potential for success in specific restoration efforts

Assessing The Needs Ofsage-Grouse Local Working Groups: Final Technical Report, L. R. Belton, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, T. A. Messmer

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Over the last several decades, biologists have grown increasingly concerned about declines in populations of two species of sage-grouse (Centrocercus spp.), a bird whose range covers a vast portion of eleven western U.S. states and two Canadian provinces (Stiver et al. 2006). This chicken-sized bird inhabits sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitats on public and private land across its range. Recent declines in population numbers of this bird across its range have generated concern among landowners and state wildlife officials that the bird may be listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Sage-grouse local working groups (LWGs) have emerged as a centerpiece …

On The Computational Complexity Of The Reticulate Cophylogeny Reconstruction Problem, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Michael A. Charleston Jan 2009

On The Computational Complexity Of The Reticulate Cophylogeny Reconstruction Problem, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Michael A. Charleston

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The cophylogeny reconstruction problem is that of finding minimal cost explanations of differences between evolutionary histories of ecologically linked groups of biological organisms. We present a proof that shows that the general problem of reconciling evolutionary histories is NP-complete and provide a sharp boundary where this intractability begins. We also show that a related problem, that of finding Pareto optimal solutions, is NP-hard. As a byproduct of our results, we give a framework by which meta-heuristics can be applied to find good solutions to this problem.

Paul Redding, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying So Much About Meaning And Love Hegel’S Metaphysics And Kant’S Epistemic Modesty, James Kreines

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this interest of time, I’ll just say something directly: this is an incredible book. Reading it, thinking it through, is extremely rewarding. I haven’t read a work of philosophy that had as much impact on me since being in school myself. The book presents you with new ideas and connections and it forces you to see philosophy and its history in new ways, even if you (like me) had been quite attached to your old ways. The book got into my head. Now I find myself, in idle moments, arguing with Paul up there in my head; as if …

Does Perceiving A Shorter Life Expectancy Make You More Likely To Commit A Crime?, Jeremy Roth Jan 2009

Does Perceiving A Shorter Life Expectancy Make You More Likely To Commit A Crime?, Jeremy Roth

Award Winning Economics Papers

This paper develops an econometric model of crime using cross-sectional data for 2,728 U.S. counties in the year 2000. From the debate over the role of rationality in decisions based on heavy future discounting, I present a theoretical calculation for all costs faced by an individual deciding whether to commit a crime. This definition allows me to suggest a new variable for the economic study of crime, absent from the expansive body of literature available: the number of years an individual is expected to live. I find strong evidence that a higher perceived life expectancy has a negative impact on …

Long Daily Movements Of Wolves, Canis Lupus, During Pup Rearing, L. David Mech, H. Dean Cluff

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Wolves, Canis lupus, on Ellesmere Island traveled a daily round-trip distance of 40.2 km from their den to a landfill during July 2008, plus an undetermined distance hunting after leaving the landfill. Although long travels by Wolves are well known, this appears to be the first documentation of long daily movements by Wolves rearing pups.

Role Of Invasive Melilotus Officinalis In Two Native Plant Communities, Laura C. Van Riper, Diane Larson Jan 2009

Role Of Invasive Melilotus Officinalis In Two Native Plant Communities, Laura C. Van Riper, Diane Larson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

This study examines the impact of the exotic nitrogen-fixing legume Melilotus officinalis (L.) Lam. on native and exotic species cover in two Great Plains ecosystems in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. Melilotus is still widely planted and its effects on native ecosystems are not well studied. Melilotus could have direct effects on native plants, such as through competition or facilitation. Alternatively, Melilotus may have indirect effects on natives, e.g., by favoring exotic species which in turn have a negative effect on native species. This study examined these interactions across a 4-year period in two contrasting vegetation types: Badlands sparse vegetation …

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Problem: Children on family agricultural operations have high risk of injury. The association between children's behavioral traits and their risk of injury is not well understood. Method: Data from the Regional Rural Injury Study-II were used to assess behavioral risk factors for injury to children ages six to b20 years. A total of 379 injury events (cases) and 1,562 randomly selected controls were identified. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), calculated using logistic regression, were used to estimate injury risk in reference to behavioral traits. Results: Injury risks were greater for children with high …

Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Damage In Asialoglycoprotein Receptor-Deficient Mice, Shana R. Dalton, Serene M.L. Lee, Rachel N. King, Amin A. Nanji, Kusum K. Kharbanda, Carol A. Casey, Benita L. Mcvicker

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

The asialoglycoprotein (ASGP) receptor is an abundant hepatocyte-specific receptor involved in receptor-mediated endocytosis. This receptor’s abundance and function is decreased by chronic ethanol administration prior to the appearance of pathology such as necrosis or inflammation. Hence, this study aimed to determine if ASGP receptor function is required to protect against liver injury by utilizing a knockout mouse model lacking functional ASGP receptor in the setting of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) hepatotoxicity. Briefly, ASGP receptor-deficient (RD) mice and wild-type (WT) mice were injected with 1 ml/kg body weight of CCl4. In the subsequent week, mice were monitored for …

Clemens, Verónica Souza, Elizabeth Hernandez, David Kershenobich, María Concepción Gutiérrez-Ruiz, Luis Enrique Gómez-Quiroz

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is involved in many cellular responses, such as mitogenesis and apoptosis protection; however, its effect against oxidative injury induced by ethanol metabolism is not well understood. The aim of this work was to address the mechanism of HGF-induced protection against ethanolgenerated oxidative stress damage in the human cell line VL-17A (cytochrome P450 2E1/alcohol dehydrogenase-transfected HepG2 cells). Cells were pretreated with 50 ng/ml HGF for 12 h and then treated with 100 mM ethanol for 0–48 h. Some parameters of oxidative damage were evaluated. We found that ethanol induced peroxide formation (3.3-fold) and oxidative damage as judged …

Eloquence De Rigueur For California Deserts, Robert A. Leidy Jan 2009

Eloquence De Rigueur For California Deserts, Robert A. Leidy

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

California’s deserts are characterized by meager rainfall and, consequently, scattered sources of permanent surface water, extreme seasonal and diurnal fluctuations in temperature, diverse landforms, tortured geologic complexity, and myriad biogeochemical interactions. Together these factors support an often unappreciated, yet astonishingly singular and productive, biota. Environmental gradients in deserts are at once subtle and complex, or what author Bruce Pavlik in The California Deserts: an Ecological Rediscovery artfully terms a “conspiracy of extremes.” There have been numerous books written on the natural history of the Earth’s various bioregions, including deserts; however, it is rare that such works have successfully woven ecological …

Shining The Bright Light On Police Interrogation In America, Mark A. Godsey Jan 2009

Shining The Bright Light On Police Interrogation In America, Mark A. Godsey

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This article reviews Richard A. Leo’s book 'Police Interrogation and American Justice.' Prior to entering legal academia, Leo served as an associate professor of psychology and criminology, and performed groundbreaking empirical research into how police interrogators obtain confessions and how their interrogation techniques affect suspects. His body of work shines the bright light on police interrogation in American today. Leo depicts the values and structure of interrogation in a way that few, outside of the actual subjects/victims of interrogation, fully understand. Although I do not agree with all of his conclusions and proposed reforms, his work convincingly raises a point …
