Role Of Accelerated Segment Switch In Exons To Alter Targeting (Asset) In The Molecular Evolution Of Snake Venom Proteins, Robin Doley, Stephen P. Mackessy, R. Manjunatha Kini Jan 2009

Role Of Accelerated Segment Switch In Exons To Alter Targeting (Asset) In The Molecular Evolution Of Snake Venom Proteins, Robin Doley, Stephen P. Mackessy, R. Manjunatha Kini

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Snake venom toxins evolve more rapidly than other proteins through accelerated changes in the protein coding regions. Previously we have shown that accelerated segment switch in exons to alter targeting (ASSET) might play an important role in its functional evolution of viperid three-finger toxins. In this phenomenon, short sequences in exons are radically changed to unrelated sequences and hence affect the folding and functional properties of the toxins.

RESULTS: Here we analyzed other snake venom protein families to elucidate the role of ASSET in their functional evolution. ASSET appears to be involved in the functional evolution of three-finger toxins …

Global Dynamics Of A Competitive System Of Rational Difference Equations In The Plane, S. Kalabušic, Mustafa R. Kulenović, E. Pilav

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate global dynamics of the following systems of difference equations xn+1 = (a1 + β1xn)/yn, yn+1 = (a2 + y2yn)/(A2 + xn), n = 0, 1, 2, …, where the parameters a1, β1, a2, y2, and A2 are positive numbers and initial conditions X0 and Y0 are arbitrary nonnegative numbers such that Y0 > 0. We show that this system has rich dynamics which depend …

Botox And Its Effect On Wrinkles, Rochelle Eckstein Jan 2009

Botox And Its Effect On Wrinkles, Rochelle Eckstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Clostridia Botulinum (C. Botulinum) is a bacterium that produces a unique exotoxin, botulinum toxin (BTX). BTX induces flaccid muscle paralysis by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine at the cholinergic nerve endings. Recently, Botox, developed from BTX, has become a popular solution to reduce the appearance of hyper-functional facial rhytids. Facial wrinkles are caused by repetitive muscle contraction, and a treatment that directly addresses this will be effective. Injections of Botox temporarily relax or paralyze these muscles. This paper will briefly discuss the bacterial basis of Botox and its development. It will explain how the mechanism of action of BTX can …

Estrogenic Compounds Downstream From Three Small Cities In Eastern Nebraska: Occurrence And Biological Effect, Marlo K. Sellin, Daniel D. Snow, Debbie L. Akerly, Alan S. Kolok Jan 2009

Estrogenic Compounds Downstream From Three Small Cities In Eastern Nebraska: Occurrence And Biological Effect, Marlo K. Sellin, Daniel D. Snow, Debbie L. Akerly, Alan S. Kolok

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Recent studies have detected estrogenic compounds in surface waters in North America and Europe. Furthermore, the presence of estrogenic compounds in surface waters has been attributed, in some cases, to the discharge of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent. The primary objective of the current study was to determine if WWTP effluent contributes estrogens to the surface waters of Nebraska. A second objective of this study was to determine if estrogens were found in concentrations sufficient enough to manifest feminizing effects on fish. These objectives were satisfied by deploying polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS) and caged fathead minnows at eight …

Sustainability In A Time Of Climate Change: Keynote Address And Conference Charge, Tom Armstrong Jan 2009

Sustainability In A Time Of Climate Change: Keynote Address And Conference Charge, Tom Armstrong

Office of Research and Economic Development: Publications

In the world we live in today, I can tell you that the Nebraska landscape is a sensitive landscape. I’m not here to try to convince you today that climate change is real. That’s for you to decide. But I will tell you my own opinion on this as a scientist and as a manager of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program, a 13-federal-agency consortium that spends about $2.2 billion a year on science and assessing the state of science regarding climate change. For many years this program has really dealt with the issue: Is climate change real or not? …

The metropolitan areas of Denver and Omaha sit like bookends for the Platte River Basin and High Plains region. In the 500 miles between these metropolitan areas lies a vast, almost completely rural region where farming and ranching are the mainstays of the economy and the culture. Agriculture is not just the primary industry; it is a way of life. This way of life is very vulnerable to changes in climate. The perspectives of the people who work and live in this region are crucial to informing research on climate change. They are on the frontlines of climate change, as …

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Eastern Illinois University was established in 1899, and from its beginning the importance of the botanical sciences was recognized. Two terms of botany were required for the four year program. Dr. Otis W. Caldwell, a botanist, was one of the original faculty members. He taught all of the biology courses and initiated the acquisition of a greenhouse. Caldwell was the first in a series of talented and dedicated botany professors including Edgar N. Transeau, Ernest L. Stover, Hiram F. Thut and John E. Ebinger. These and many other professors incorporated a field component into almost all classes. This dedication to …

Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among A Sample Of Chinese Mothers Living In Ireland, Qianling Zhou, Katherine Younger, John Kearney Jan 2009

Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among A Sample Of Chinese Mothers Living In Ireland, Qianling Zhou, Katherine Younger, John Kearney

Conference Papers

In recent years, breastfeeding has become the focus of public health in Ireland. Previous research has reported significant differences in breastfeeding initiation rates among Irish mothers (47.1%) and non-Irish mothers (79.6%) living in Ireland(1). While attitudes towards breastfeeding among Irish mothers have been previously described(2), such information on non-nationals is lacking, particularly among Chinese residing in Ireland. This study was undertaken to fill this information gap, describing the maternal attitudes towards breastfeeding among Chinese mothers living in Ireland. A cross-sectional self-administrated survey was conducted. Questionnaires (written in Chinese) were distributed to the Chinese mothers, mainly via Chinese supermarkets and Chinese …

The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja Jan 2009

The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This is a study about the effects of human activities and tourist development on the Olive Ridley, an endangered sea turtle species that nests on the beaches of the Northern shores of the Bay of Banderas, Nayarit, Mexico. I traveled to the site and I used a mixed methods approach to do my research. First, I mapped the nesting sea turtle sites using GIS/GPS technology. I recorded the location of the nests on the beach using the GPS device for a period of three weeks. The data were imported into GIS and analyzed. Second, for the Ethnographic qualitative methods, I …

Assessment Of Endangered Beach Layia (Layia Carnosa) On The Monterey Peninsula, Michael E. Johns Jan 2009

Assessment Of Endangered Beach Layia (Layia Carnosa) On The Monterey Peninsula, Michael E. Johns

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Coastal dunes are a unique and dynamic habitat, containing fauna that have adapted to life in harsh maritime conditions. While these species have managed to thrive in such a habitat, human influences may undermine their continued success. Beach layia (Layia carnosa), a small annual herb, is one example of a species which has become isolated by habitat loss from human expansion. Endemic to California, it exhibits a patchy distribution along the coast, and occurs in two dunes systems on the Monterey Peninsula, Asilomar State Beach and Indian Village Dunes. Previous estimates at these two sites indicate a small population size, …

Carmel Bay : Oceanographic Dynamics And Nutrient Transport In A Small Embayment Of The Central California Coast, Dustin Carroll

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Using an extensive mooring time series from the outer edge of Stillwater Cove, this study investigated the oceanographic dynamics and their contribution to nutrient delivery in Carmel Bay. Carmel Bay is small embayment located at the northern end of the Big Sur coast, and it is distinguished by having a submarine canyon within extremely close proximity to the beach. This embayment is open to open ocean coastal California Current conditions; however, it also provides a sheltered environment from wind and swell. No previous studies have been conducted on the circulation features of Carmel Bay and Stillwater Cove, and HF radar …

Kicking The Tires Of Natural Selection: The Carriage Still Runs After 150 Years Jan 2009

Kicking The Tires Of Natural Selection: The Carriage Still Runs After 150 Years

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science is both tentative and durable. This is its great strength: as we discover new evidence, or find new ways to interpret existing evidence, scientific ideas can be modified, offering us a more complete and reliable picture of the universe. Helping your students understand this aspect of science not only reduces their resistance to learning about evolution, but also encourages deeper understanding about how science works.

Alimentación Preventiva De La Vaca Lechera En Transición., A. D. Garcia, A. R. Hippen

Dairy Science Publication Database
